"...generally, the purpose of prophecy is to reveal the heart, mind and will of God." (Jennifer LeClaire, The Making of a Prophet)
The author shares her own experiences of being called into the prophetic office. She says, "Remember that when you answer the call to prophetic ministry, it means submitting to a making process. During that making process the Lord is investing in your development and giving you an opportunity to serve as His mouthpiece. That is a tremendous honor and an awe-inspiring responsibility. God will ask more of you than He asks of many others in the Body of Christ. Staying pure means following a narrower path. Staying pure means cultivating passion for holiness."
She talks about pitfalls believers can make in pursuing and developing their prophetic gift; everything from pride, to seeking titles, missing the mark, being humble, etc. She admits that in the beginning of her own personal ministry, she was seeking the title of "prophet", and had to learn to humble herself and allow God to use her despite not being given this title. While she related her story, I was reminded of a Scripture that clearly says that a prophet will not say s/he is a prophet (See Zechariah 13:5).
I think the greatest thing you can learn from this book is that in any spiritual gift, including prophecy, we need to exercise it in love. Near the end of her book, she takes you through 1 Corinthians 13, also called "The Love Chapter", and explains how we are noisy gongs and clanging symbols without love. In my words, "don't be a Prophet Ding Dong."
She says becoming a prophet/prophetess is a process and God will take your through development stages. She says, "Remember, the making process never ends. You might say that it is always time to grow up. Prophecy will be fulfilled and pass away; tongues will cease; knowledge will be superseded by truth. Only actions motivated by love will count for anything in eternity."
I personally put my guard up when someone claims they are a prophet. As I mentioned in the Scripture above (Zechariah 13:5), a prophet doesn't need to say they are a prophet. The gift is evident. Those who say they have this gift (or any other spiritual gift for that matter) without the fruit are like clouds without rain (See Proverbs 25:14).
The Making of a Prophet is a practical and biblical guide to what it truly is to be used of God as a prophet and also, the great responsibility and cost that is associated with this office.
LeClaire does not sugar coat anything. She tells it like it is. She derives and shares from her own personal experiences; the mistakes as well as the victories.
She covered many undergoing topics as a prophet will face: rejection betrayal idolatry pride fear promotion comes from God (Ps. 75:6-7) envy and self seeking (James 3:16); envy focuses on other people blessings and have an ungrateful spirit. Jonah's stubbornness caused him to focus on his self-will rather than God's will. Idolatry and puts prophets in a precarious position (p 86). He'd rather face death than repent. (I had to sit on this thought for awhile...we are that stubborn where we'd rather die or seek death than to ask for God's forgiveness). sexual immortality (Jezebel seductive spirit) deception
These were the main topics and worth reading. I enjoyed the book further along...

Excellent read. Jennifer LeClaire is very honest about her own experiences and touches on some things that many church leaders don't want to talk about. She gives a very biblical basis for what she says and this book will really help even if you are not called to prophetic ministry. It's fab xx
So many relatable experiences in this book. This almost as if the writer was talking to me personally. I was really blessed by this book and I highly recommend it to all.

My Review: If you are looking for a virtual guidebook to guide you after the calling into prophetic ministry, then this is the book for you. As the author so plainly shows us her experience, she had written this book only after searching for a book to explain what to do after God had spoken to her. But as she states she could only find ones that explained hearing God and that is when she knew she needed to write one herself. So this book is for those struggling with the notion on what to do next after embracing the fact that this is their calling.
Many of the things the author notes my husband and I have applied to our situation, he being called in to the ministry as a pastor. I see alot of similarities in the calling process that we have had to endure in the past few years so I can definitely agree with many of the author's points. There were many prophets in the Bible for us to glean truth from. They weren't all the same but many of the ways God chose to work out their callings are similar.
I know in our process, the timing has been very slow. It has been hard to have the patience and the perseverance to see it through. So much so that it will cause you to question it time and time again. I think the calling into any of the gifting's of the ministry are very serious ones and are not something that you should take lightly. Being called by God is a huge honor with unlimited possibilities!
**Disclosure** This book was sent to me free of charge for my honest review from Chosen.
I'm so glad I find this book! Reading through the book I had a lot of my questions answered. Many things began to make sense and became clear. I would recommend this book for anyone who may believe they are called to the prophetic.
I won this book through GoodReads first read program.
I am a Christian and have read the Bible regarding spiritual gifts but I have never had experiences with anyone who had the gift of being prophetic. This was really an unknown area for me. I found it fascinating. I don't know why it suprised me so much because I know God is active in our lives. Just that He would give another human a message to share with others (prophesy) just kind of blew me away. I doubt that I have this gift.
For those that do have the prophetic gift this book would be very helpful because it gives examples of the process of bringing out your prophetic gift. What to do and what not to do. It would also give you the comfort of knowing others have and do face all that you are going through.
The author writes this book in a very helpful format with Bible verses supporting all that she lays out. If being a prophet is your calling from God than look into this book to use your gift to bring God glory.
Making of a Prophet, The Practical Advice for Developing Your Prophetic Voice Jennifer Leclaire Copyright 2014
The Making of A Prophet is an important book for those who are called into the prophetic ministry. It reminds us prophecy is not fortune tellers or psychics who pretend to know our future. This book reminds those who are called into Prophetic ministry that modern day prophets are called to prepare people for the Lord by leading them to a more intimate relationship with our Savior.
Jennifer Leclaire points out those in the ministry will deal with bouts of extreme Spiritual warfare. It also points out that some may not be ready to accept your calling.
This book is an important read for anyone who is led into the prophetic ministry.
I'd probably give this one 3.5 stars. The subject matter is definitely relevant for those engaging in the prophetic ministry. This straight-forward book is a call to character growth and putting off the carnal, childish ways that are prevalent to all of us, including many Charismatics and Pentecostals.
I found it refreshing that the author didn't engage in a one size fits all approach and repeatedly emphasized that there's a lot of nuance and variety within the prophetic ministry.
I really like this book. The words flow like water off the page and into my mind because Ms. LeClaire has so much experience in the field of the prophetic. I enjoy reading The Making of a Prophet because so much of Jennifer's argument relates to me, although I am in the generation beneath hers. I will always keep this book as a reference that I can read later on in my life.
This is a smooth book with a lot of great information in it; it's like a slice of rich cake. Jennifer LeClaire goes through the process of the prophetic call. She has a way of revealing deep information and revelation without going over someone's head. Easily becoming one of my favorite books, the overall journey of your prophetic voice is thoroughly mapped out in The Making of a Prophet.
I found it very to be very interesting to see what a person who beleives they are a modern prophet has to go through and experience. However I found as simply a reader I had a lot of questions I wish the Author answered.
This was a great teaching book on understanding role of the prophet and the gift of prophecy. It needs to be read several times in order to truly understand all the teaching between the covers.
Jennifer LeClaire spoke plainly and practically about what it means to be set apart. This book could be used by anyone who seeks to know how to serve God and guard themselves from the enemy!
