Solution-focused therapy is an evidenced-based practice that focuses on creating conversations that build solutions, rather than solve problems. Learning Solution-Focused An Illustrated Guide teaches readers how to practice and become competent in conducting solution-focused therapy.
As a high school teacher, I loved this book. It's incredibly helpful in dealing with difficult conversations and difficult students. Instead of focusing on what is wrong, you find what is working and reinforce that. For example if I have a student who is failing, I sit with them and have a discussion of what they do understand, and ways they have found in the past that have helped them study. I then build the conversation from a positive foundation. This has been remarkably helpful. I can't stress enough how important I think this methodology is. If we as teachers focus on what is working and reinforce that, it will be inevitable that students will have more success. I encourage all teachers to read this.
A very practical guide to understanding solution focused therapy and its techniques. Though I find the examples a bit mechanical, I will certainly adapt the methodology to my counseling.
