In March 2012, we left the UK for a six-month career break, and never went back. A year later we'd lived in 21 different "homes" across three continents...and were making lots more money than we did in our old jobs.
This short guide exists to convince you that you can become an "Anywhereist" too: do the work you love on your own terms, from wherever you want, and never have that dreaded "Sunday evening feeling" again.
You'll learn
* Why having a "nice safe job" is the riskiest thing you can possibly do
* How your "stuff" is holding you back (even if you don't want to travel)
* Why the advice to "follow your passion" is well-meaning, but fundamentally flawed
* That the concept of a "4-hour work week" is a myth...and why you should be happy about it
* How you can radically change your life by changing what you pay attention to
* Why earning one single pound/dollar/euro/whatever is the best start you can give yourself
This isn't about bumming around in Bali or scraping by in South America. If you put in the hours and develop new skills, you can earn all the money you need and do it from wherever you want.
This guide contains quotes, ideas and links to further reading. By the end you should realise that living life on your own terms isn't easy, but you can do it...and it's SO worth it.
This little book contains an overview of the main principles, inspiration and ideas that led to Mish and Rob throwing off the shackles of 9 to 5 life, setting up their own successful freelance copy-writing company and becoming Digital Nomads (AKA Anywhereists). An Anywhereist is someone who does (or aspires to do) work that they love, on their own terms, from wherever they choose to be in the world; this tiny book is packed with tips and insights for anyone who has even the merest inkling that the Anywhereist lifestyle might be for them. Its short, punchy chapters cover a range of topics, providing the main points you'll need to know to set out on the path to the life of freedom and freelancing. For anyone who wants to explore a topic further, there is a list of links to related websites and articles that have provided invaluable information and inspiration to the authors on their own journey.
Making it Anywhere is written in an informal style, full of humour and little quips that will make you laugh out loud. Reading this book feels a bit like having a soul-reviving Skype chat with a kind of quirky friend who just plain gets you! Every line emanates positivity, leaving you fired up and ready to get out there and achieve your goals.
It is possible to read the main text of this book in around half an hour and get a whole lot from it. It is also possible to delve oh-so-much deeper, spending weeks or even months wandering amongst the many paths of enquiry that it opens up to the reader! Each chapter begins with a quote, presumably ones which Mish and Rob have found to be particularly compelling. Googling the authors of these quotes can lead to the discovery of many gems of knowledge and provocative stories from people who are already living the life you want to. As previously mentioned, there is also a list of relevant links at the end of each chapter, which invariably lead to engrossing, illuminating and instructive websites. Most of these sites provide further related links of their own - leading to an exponential information explosion! Add to this a continuing blog by the authors at www.makingitanywhere.com and you begin to see what a treasure trove of information and inspiration this book really is.
In short, I would recommend setting aside half an hour to at least peruse the main text of this book to absolutely anyone who thinks they might have an Anywhereist bone in their body. It's hard to estimate how much you might stand to gain from doing so; it might just turn out to be the half an hour that changes your life forever!
