Second Sight
An acclaimed investigative journalist, Marlie Kaplan, is headed for stardom until an undercover story she is working on goes horribly wrong, killing one of her colleagues and leaving Marlie blind. Through experimental surgery she miraculously gets back partial vision -- and something more. Now she can also see weird, unexplainable things, things beyond what's visible with the naked eye.
Eager to jump-start her career, Marlie lands an important exclusive interview and uses it as leverage to get her old job back. Then the unthinkable happens: a colleague is murdered and Marlie's the only witness. But the only thing she saw clearly was the colored cloud surrounding both the victim and the killer, the same colored clouds she now sees around everyone she meets. Enough twists and turns to keep the reader entertained and guessing at the outcome.

Such a great thriller! The twist was not what I was expecting, and I love when that happens!! Great read!

Imagine for a second that you can "see" the real emotions of the people around you. This visual occurrence was the result of a computer chip placed in our protagonist's brain to enable the return of her sight. I didn't like her initially - she was too whinny, obnoxious, and insensitive to foster any care or consideration for her circumstances but as the story unfolded and you got to know her better, my feelings for her changed. The last quarter of the book was difficult to put down.

The protagonist loses her sight, and through experimental surgery regains it and more. She sees auras, and as a witness to a murder, she sees something about the killer that no one else does. A pretty good thriller.

Second Sight By Beth Amos
Overall rating: This book is a lesson in mediocre murder mystery101.
Have you ever got tired of reading the same sort of books all the time and just decided to grab a random book out of blue because you just wanted a change? Okay. Maybe not all of you. But I’m sure some have. This time around it was a mystery/paranormal/thriller called Second Sight By Beth Amos.
The write up on the back of the book was awfully vague. It was it was about a journalist Marlie Kaplan who lost her sight in a accident and the goes through a new sort of surgery to get her sight back. Yet she sees what no one else can, yet despite that, she jumpstarts into her career and get involved in a mystery. See what I mean. It’s really vague, and sadly the book was just about as exciting as the write up.
After the surgery Marlie finds that she can see auras. She can see color around them to tell if their sad, happy or just evil. Also after gaining her sight back, she witnesses a murder. It ‘s the murder of a woman she used to work with before she lost her sight.
So earlier I said that it’s a mystery paranormal thriller. Well that’s what it’s cataloged under at the local library, but you might as well ignore the paranormal part. The aura bit is mentioned in a couple chapters and then is completely forgotten making the concept meaningless to the story. Then the thrill can just be forgotten all together. This, is in fact one of the most boring mystery I ever read.
Overall the book is a who done it? Was it her ex husband? Was it the governor she’s doing the story on? Is it the cop who seems to be crooked? It’s the basic formula these books typically follow. But this one is so predictable, that this author should just be embarrassed to have this in print. I knew who it was at the half way mark in the book.
The good. I really can’t say anything good about it. When she went blind, I thought there would be real drama. But it just jumps to after the operation. The operation said a computer chip was put in her head? Now how exactly would make some one see? Well it seems no one in the book knows. The auras could of led us to something interesting rather than just filler for the book. After she got her sight back her husband is trying to legally take custody of her daughter away and there’s real distance between her and her daughter . Perfect formula for some drama to make you understand and care about Marlie. But just like the auras, it’s mentioned once and then never again, like it never happened. And the murder, you know after you read one even similar to this, you read them all. It’s mediocre murder mystery 101. When I read one of these, I want twists and turns, and things I can’t see coming. This didn’t do that.
I can’t really recommend this to anyone unless you like things like Nancy Drew and Murder She Wrote. And the worse thing about it, the book tries to sell it self as something dealing with the paranormal. Call me a geek, but I think when they put that that in the book, it should hold a purpose of some sort to the story. But the again, I just might be too much of nerd, and am letting it bug me too much. So Second Sight gets ¼ smoothie. Lowest rating so far. Worse than Jumper 3. That’s pretty bad.

This book, my first by this author, was pretty good, though not of the caliber of the Lisas' work (Jackson and Gardiner). I felt the story was at least 50, maybe as many as 100 pages too long. The premise was somewhat original, somewhat implausible as well, but okay. There were even a couple of unexpected turns, but it took quite a while to get to them, plenty long enough to pretty much figure outwit was going to happen.

A Suspenseful Who Done It
I enjoyed the suspense and trying to figure out who the murder was. I didn't much like the character Marlie because she was so gruff most of the time but I guess in her line of work it is probably a true character trait. I read a few other books by this author's and plan on reading more.

This was an okay book that should have been better. The lead character was blind, bitter and a serious ass. The plot was silly and the writing and various characters were not interesting enough to recommend this to anyone.
