"STAY ON THE SIDE OF THE BIG MEN."

That was what Pat Keenan told his son as he lay dying, and young Matt Keenan vowed to follow his father's advice. But when he returned to his boyhood home in New Mexico, he ran into a hail of bullets fired by the company he had hoped to work for and local settlers the company wanted to evict. Caught in the cross fire, Keenan had to decide which meant a promise to a dead man, or the lives of hundreds of men and women who would rather die than lose their land.

First published in 1957, Cast A Long Shadow is a western novel set in Colorado in the late 19th century. The plot involves the familiar theme of a large corporation using legal chicanery and coercion to remove farmers and small ranchers from a valley which it wishes to acquire. The character development is unusually strong and well achieved in a genre that often does things by the numbers, but this is not surprising given the skill and experience of the author.
