Matthias Robichaud is looking for an alliance. The Defiance motorcycle club is a stronghold in the dangerous world that’s become the new norm and he’s driven to prove he’s tough enough to be sworn in as a full member. But when he sees a beautiful, spirited girl abducted by a rival MC, rescuing her jeopardizes all he’s worked for.
Politician’s daughter Jessa Everson knows what’s expected of her—obedience, loyalty and silence—but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t fight when she’s kidnapped by the Lords of Vengeance. Having Matthias save her is like gaining an avenging angel in leather and tattoos. But Defiance is known for brutal justice, and she may have just traded one bad situation for another.
Matthias’s urge to protect is too strong to ignore, no matter how much trouble Jessa brings to Defiance’s gates. There’s no room in the post-Chaos world for weakness so if Matthias and Jessa have any chance of surviving, they’ll need to put their full strength behind the MC…and hope that the MC will do the same for them.

Now that I've gotten that off my chest lol This was another captivating addition to the series. Once again, it was dark and gritty and I loved it. I just wish there would be a little more world building. I want to know what is going to happen now that Defiance knows what the government has been doing and where it's headed. I want to know more about the trading and problems with the mob and other MCs. I want to know what Rebel's secret is that Luna has been keeping (I think I know, but I want confirmation lol) And for the love of God, I want Bishop to have his own book!!
I'll be preordering the next one as soon as it's available.
OK, so fans looking to read a hot and very dominant book will love this. Stephanie's Defiance stories are all centered on really hard (and hot, let's not forget hot) men. They love and protect their women, but at their core they are a part of the Defiance motorcycle club, so do not expect flowers and sparkles. Now for the story: I was happy to read that this is the story of Matthias, who's mute. His friendship with Bishop, his history, all of it, drew me in. Jessa (our heroine) is a politician's daughter who was abducted and then rescued by Matthias. The two fall in love, and it's adorable, it's hard and it's hot. Watching them fall deeper in love was just as good as watching the workings and happenings around Defiance. Oh, and did I mention she's a politician's daughter? That means we get to see the inner workings of the government, or what's left of it. The audio narrator is also amazing and sucks you in with her nuances and variations. I highly recommend!
My only regret right now is that the audio version won't be out until around January! Boooooooo
I. Love. Mathias. The second book in the series and I couldn't get enough. Mathias may be mute but he communicated to everyone on so many levels. He is sexy and funny and oh so protective. Mathias and Bishop are brothers of the heart and meet Jessa at the beginning of the book. She's not in a position any woman wants to be in, so naturally they jump in and save her. There's an instant connection, and dare we say love, between Mathias and Jessa. We see their trust and love grow throughout the book. Secrets are revealed; we learn more about Mathias and Bishop's past, and we even see the bond grow between Bishop and Jessa. There was so much going on and I couldn't get enough. Stephanie Tyler has a way of writing that completely engages you, and her characters are so layered. Her men are alpha, her ladies so strong. I will happily read anything this lady writes. *received an ARC for an honest review*
This one was better than the first. It flowed more smoothly, but I still had some of the same issues I had with the first book. So far I have read book 1 and 2 back to back, which I don't normally do, so I obviously like them. Odds are I will probably go straight to number 3! I feel like sometimes the characters turn on a dime and I feel like my head is spinning and like I missed a page or something. With the first book I had to write the characters down so I could keep track of who was who, but this book was easier to keep track of. I dunno, I liked it a lot but still feel like she has yet to reach her potential.
I bought this one not knowing it's about a post-apocalyptic MC. My first thought went to Fist of the North Star and that totally wasn't a good sign. I skipped a lot. The insta-love romance didn't work for me. The relationship between the mute hero and his best friend are interesting but not enough for me to continue or pick up the first book.
I so enjoyed this a lot more then the first in the series. Got so much better. When finishing the last chapter it made me want to dive right into the 3rd in the series. So I promptly went into Amazon to buy it and start it straight away haha
Anyway a great exciting, thrilling read 4 stars from me :)

Mathias’s urge to protect is too strong to ignore, no matter how much trouble Jessa brings to Defiance’s gates. There’s no room in the post-Chaos world for weakness so if Mathias and Jessa have any chance of surviving, they’ll need to put their full strength behind the MC…and hope that the MC will do the same for them. This blurb came from the author’s website. I read Defiance earlier this year with a few of my fellow Book Pushers and while not perfect I found the idea intriguing, the characters distinctive, and some lingering questions about the events that led to the apocalypse. I was interested in finding out what was going to happen in the next installment since the status quo was significantly altered. I was also very intrigued by the two deserters who were supporting Defiance but had not formally joined. Reading the back cover blurb and finding out that the hero was one of the deserters increased my interest. Tyler answered some of the questions I was wondering and in doing so raised others. While Mathias was the hero in this story, he and Bishop were so intertwined from childhood that he was present in most of the scenes. However, Tyler made a point to demonstrate that Bishop thought of Mathias as a brother and viewed Jessa platonically.
Mathias was on a quest to redeem himself for some of his actions in the past. Even as a young boy he was incapable of walking by when someone needed rescuing. This trait brought him both his best friend, a brother by another mother, and more trouble than he could count. He and Bishop were enjoying time outside during a few of the rare sunlit hours discussing their plans for the future when the peace was broken by a terrified scream. Mathias and Bishop were known for being constantly on the move. Due to their status as deserters and a dislike of those who abused power and therefore innocents, they never remained in one place long enough to put down roots. Their time in Defiance was the longest they had been in one place since deserting the army and they were starting to feel restless. After assessing the situation Mathias insisted on intervening, a decision that changed his life.
Jessa grew up the pampered daughter of a high-ranking politician groomed to make a political marriage and carry on her family’s influence in running the country, or what was left of it. Jessa wasn’t happy in her designated role and when her parents would not listen to her thoughts she rebelled by attempting to kill herself multiple times. After her most recent and most serious attempt she married her childhood acquaintance, the man she was supposed to marry in her father’s political scheme. After trusting him with the politically deadly secrets she overheard, she found herself betrayed by her husband and being sold as a sex slave. Her rescue by Mathias and Bishop was an opportunity to change her life for the better if she was willing to take a chance.
I ended up having mixed feelings about the main characters. I absolutely loved learning more about both Bishop and Mathias. Their story was a mixture of uplifting and sad. The insights into what made them who they were did a lot to explain the decisions each made throughout the story. I really hope their circumstances at the end of this story don’t jeopardize their bond. Jessa, on the other hand, puzzled me. She didn’t fit in her pampered world but also showed far less distress at more primitive living than I would have expected. She also continued to believe her husband even after knowing what he was willing to do. She waffled between trusting and not trusting any of the members of Defiance including Mathias until it was too late. While some of my puzzlement was relieved when I found out her final secret, I still had some issues with her rationale when it came to her husband.
While I thought the world-building and some of the story flow was better, I had a harder time believing in the romance in this installment. I think part of it was my fascination with Mathias and Bishop combined with the difficulty I experienced trying to connect to Jessa. I couldn’t get past thinking the attraction was much more one-sided.
You found out you get to keep living.
He let me digest that for a long moment and then explained, For a lot of people who weren’t in your position, they think it’s about not dying. But when you really think about it, you found out today that you get to keep on living instead. And that’s a whole other ball game.
Mathias was willing to sacrifice an immense amount for Jessa but I never had the feeling that she would be willing to make an equivalent sacrifice. I did really enjoy how Jessa worked to communicate with Mathias without requiring an interpreter. I also thought the way Tyler brought forward the subtleties of body language into Mathias’ interactions a nice way to remind people that entire conversations can occur without a single spoken word.
As I was reading Redemption and catching the expanded pieces of worldbuilding, I found it fascinating to put the pieces together from the opposite perspectives of Mathias and Jessa for the same cataclysmic event. As I filled in the picture I was reminded of an old science fiction duology by Philip Wylie called When Worlds Collide and After Worlds Collide. Only instead of following the lives of the privileged few, the focus was on the non-privileged who dared to make their own living. This helped me visualize the new generation of Defiance and how they were changing the old culture while defending their lifestyle.
I am still curious about what is going to happen next as things look like they are building up to a confrontation of some sort. I have a lot of questions about Mathis and a certain member of Defiance along with wondering about a particular secret. I think I know what it is but I am not exactly sure yet. I also want to see Mathis and Jessa’s relationship grow because I am not exactly comfortable with where this book ended and their HEA.
This series is getting better! I knew Matthias and Bish were going to bring things to a new level. This post apocalyptic world is heating up. Change is inevitable and the road there looks pretty interesting. Can't wait for t he next one.

Thoughts: If you've never read a Stephanie Tyler book then you are missing out on one of the best Romantic Suspense authors published today. In her Defiance series, she takes all those great things she does in her RS series, and mixes it with Sons of Anarchy and Revolution. This combination takes a certain amount of ability and Stephanie not only has that, she makes it believable.
Redemption picks up about six months after Defiance, the first book in this series. It takes everything we though we knew about this world she's created and turned it on its side with the introduction of two new characters. Two characters who have been in the heart of the government all their lives and know the truth about what is really going on. A truth that rocks everything.
Matthias is one of those characters that you would imagine seeing in a Black OP's book and being one of the best bad-asses in the unit. So imagine all of that in a twenty year old. As we get to know Matthias the more we realize that he is someone who has an honor code forged in steel. And that is what makes him so sexy, and also puts him in the crossfires of some very dangerous people.
Jessa is a character I had to warm up to. In the beginning so much of what she did screamed I'm 19 and clueless. Until you discovered not all is at it seems with her. Her secrets have secrets and she's terrified of what will happen to her if anyone discovers them. She never expected to meet someone like Matthias and his code of honor, nor the feelings she's suddenly having about him.
Like always there is a ton going on in the background of this story. I have a feeling with each new book we'll get more about what is really going on, and it will be nothing that we expected.
Once again Tyler has written a book that will suck you in and hold tight to you until you've read the last word, and then you will scream because the next book isn't out yet.
When I saw Stephanie talking with someone about Redemption and their thoughts after they read it... I have to admit I might have begged a bit to get my hands on this one. I loved Defiance and couldn't wait for more from this intriguing world. So when she was gracious enough to let me get my hands on it I was extremely gleeful and dived right in after I finished being a grownup and doing homework for college.. ;-)
We met Matthias in Defiance and I found him to be someone I wanted to know more about so finding him as the hero of this one made me a very happy person. We get to see that he is a man who is very willing to believe in magic, curses and the unexplained but we also get to see that the one people should perhaps be more afraid of is him... not Bishop.. He's slow to let his control go but when he does nothing can really bring him back until he releases this pent up aggression. He doesn't make apologies for being the way he is but he's also someone that you would want in your corner because once he gives his loyalty to you it is an amazing thing. He's smart and amazingly sexy even though he doesn't talk you can see the way he feels with everything he does. When he meets Jessa all bets are off and anything that comes between him and his woman had better run in fear. I loved how much he was willing to sacrifice for the good of his MC and her but found his friendship with Bishop to be more amazing than his relationship with Jessa. They are truly a matched pair and seeing what both of them are willing to do for one another was beautiful.
Jessa made a lot of mistakes in this one. She's been misunderstood her entire life but she's also been raised in a world of privilege and wealth the MC just can't comprehend. She's led astray by her "husband" and ends up being rescued by our boys. There is an instant attraction for Matthias that comes to fruition very quickly but for a woman who was almost raped and killed I could understand the need to ground oneself by using sex. The good thing is that she recognizes that Matthias is special and even though she does make mistakes with him I didn't want to slap her for them. She's got a major secret that could jeopardize everyone in the MC but when push comes to shove she does the right thing and lets them know what is brewing. I loved her backbone when she discovered it but I adored when she apologized to Matthias for something stupid she says.
I can't leave out Bishop... This man... *sigh* I'm beyond ready for his story and I know we are going to be dealing with his decision and the aftermath for a while. He's not going to be an easy man to fix once he comes back but I look forward to seeing how it plays out. :-)
Thanks again to Stephanie for giving me the chance to read this with no expectation for review... Feel free to drop anything else my way cause I really have enjoyed this series. I need to go grab your backlist for other titles but ya know you can send the Defiance guys my way any time..
Salvation is the 3rd novel in the Defiance Series by Stephanie Tyler. I read the second book in the series, Redemption based on the recommendation of several folks in twitter.
The Defiance series is essentially a post-apocalyptic Motorcycle Club/New Adult novel. I enjoyed Redemption despite having the skipped the first book where I suspect most of the world-building for occurred.
Luna and Bishop were supporting characters in Redemption and I was eager for their story. Bishop and Mathias are blood brothers, who survived brutal childhoods together, escaped the military after the Chaos and are finding a place and maybe a home in Defiance.
In Redemption Bishop was also Mathias’s voice, speaking for him, since he only communicates through sign language forming a close relationship with Jessa. At the end of Redemption Bishop took Mattias place as a hostage in Keller’s compound. Keller is a mafioso, trading partner and occasional threat and rival to the Defiance MC. Luna is a legacy member of the Defiance MC who is scarred by the abuse and violence that was common there under the previous leaders. She had been ready to leave Defiance and take her chances in the outside world when Bishop arrived, so after waiting four months for his return she decides to follows Bishop to Keller's.
At Keller’s Luna finally lets Bishop claim her as his or have them both suffer the consequences of her impulsive and unsanctioned arrival. Keller’s compound is alluring mirage: freedom and excess on the surface and desperation and fear underneath. Bishop and Luna have to navigate treacherous relationships to stay alive, doubting every word they hear while projecting strength. I was disappointed by how little time Tyler spent deepening or building a romance for Bishop and Luna, with most of the story dedicated to the precarious political situation at Keller’s and reacting to outside threats by the LoV and the Government. Their relationship seemed to stall after a few chapters and boiled down to a lot of Bishop bossing her around and Luna liking it.
Declan one of Keller’s top men and Bishop’s assassination partner and Rebel, Luna’s best-friend and protector in Defiance however have a much more interesting relationship. Drawn together after Rebel traces Luna to Keller’s their relationship deepens beyond their initial intentions. They both live closeted lives, as their sexual orientation and S/M preferences are not acceptable to most the members in their rival organizations. Their relationship and growing attachment could be fascinating to read. I might give the next book a try to see if they can balance their conflicting loyalties to try unite their compounds survive the Government’s stepped up efforts at eradicating America’s undesirables.
The Defiance's politics are complex and well developed but I wish there had been less focus on the external conflicts.
3 out 5
A digital ARC of this novel was provided by the publisher, Carina Press in exchange for a fair and honest review.
This book was leaps and bounds so much better than Book 1 and i liked book 1.. but as hot as Casper was .. he is No Mathias!!!!!
The man is from the Bayou.. he's ex-military.. badass mother... who eventhough he doesn't have a voice.. knows how to use his damn mouth... and all of his other 2,000 body parts!
This is Insta-Lust and i am A-OKAY with that.. because it is the "Post-Chaos" world and honestly you have to live like you're dying and who is going to turn down a man like Mathias.. or any of the Defiance men... not me.. that's for damn sure.
The sex was good but not super explicit (and we all know i prefer extremely explicit) but the story captured me and kept me interested so in my opinion it was a win-win!
Maybe i just don't remember from the first book but.... these people never use protection...
Things went crazy there for a while..
But let's face it..Mathias killed to protect her and well.. thats hot.
This is a series i will keep on keepin' on because it's just too good not to!
So, I was going to pass on reading this book as MC stories can be sort of hit or miss for me (usually miss) and I had never read this author before. Then it went on sale, so I was tempted more strongly. I was still going to pass on it, though, until I found out that the hero is mute. Not deaf, mute. Hello, catnip. I love unique heroes and heroines, and a mute hero is right up that alley.
Mathias is our nonverbal hero, but for someone who can't talk he says a lot. He signs, of course, but he also makes use of other forms of communication, such as body language, facial expression, and his beautiful connection with his best friend/adopted brother, Bishop. The two of them don't need words. I have to say, this relationship sort of trumped Mathias's love interest, Jessa. I adore Bish, and the love and trust between him and Mathias is sweet and true and breathtaking. At one point they are basically described as being soul mates (minus the romantic factor), a fated match, and I could see it in every one of their interactions. The basic understanding they have of one another was powerful to witness—they often know what the other needs before he even realizes he has a need. They are true brothers, even though they aren't really related. I would read this book again just for Mathias and Bishop, because I love what the author created of their friendship, and I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like it in a book I've read.
Jessa, on the other hand, was a little more trying. First, she just hasn't known Mathias very long so there is not the trust that Mathias and Bish have, which is 100% understandable. And then there is the fact that she comes to a decision about something, such as her relationship with Mathias, and the smallest doubt will make her question everything about him. And her husband, Charlie...it takes her a little too long, in my opinion, to wise up to his shit. He tried to sell you, honey. Stop believing anything he says! Her relationship with Mathias is also a little odd. It starts off very sexual, which is fine, I have no problem with that. I do have a little bit of a problem with her sleeping with Mathias and trusting him with her life one minute and the next wondering if he is just playing her. You either trust him with your life or you don't, but you can't waffle about that kind of trust, not to me. I could understand her not giving him that amount of trust right away, but once it is given I don't understand why she keeps revoking it. But she does get better, eventually.
One small naggy thing: Mathias gives Jessa a tattoo. I could swear when he gave it to her it was on her back, but later it is on her hip.
Redemption (Defiance MC #2) By: Stephanie Tyler 5/5 stars
As we return to the post-apocalyptic world of post-Chaos in the Defiance MC and this time, there some of the same players and more players of the villainous type and all with an air of the political climate of a post-Chaos United States.
Mathias, the mute, AWOL soldier whose dad was friends with Caspar’s dad and his friend “Bish” Bishop happened to witness a transaction of a young woman being sold between a nasty, rival MC and the local mafia while being betrayed by the man she was with. Mathias, a believer of signs, had dreamt of one the night before first seeing this young woman. Mathias and Bishop couldn’t allow the transaction to happen and stepped in.
Jessa grew up the daughter of a prominent politician who not only had his whole life mapped up, but who had mapped out her life as well. After being kidnapped and held by the Lords of Vengeance MC, being betrayed by her man and almost being sold to the mafia, she is caught up in a whirlwind of avenging angels in leather and tattoos.
When Jessa is rescued, she is scared out of her mind. She’s hurt because of the deep betrayal, she’s scared because of this post-Chaos life and she’s harboring deep secrets that she is holding very close to the vest. But these secrets could get people killed no matter if they learn of them or if they don’t. Such is the conundrum.
As Jessa and Mathias get closer and start to fall for each other, they also push each other away, several times, mainly out of fear. This does get somewhat annoying and you just want to reach through the pages and give them a good shake. Since Bishop has had to translate for Mathias and Jessa, she also became close with Bish who was the voice of reason to and for both Jessa and Mathias and helped to explain things to both of them. Bish was a truly awesome friend.
But rescuing Jessa has painted a huge bulls-eye on the backs of Defiance by the mafia, the rival MC, Jessa’s family and what is left of the U.S. government. Mathias and Bishop haven’t formally joined the Defiance MC or pledged to stick around for any length of time. But the one thing they have always done was throw their allegiance, loyalty, respect and bodies behind Caspar and his initiatives. They have proven themselves time and again.
But there are debts to be paid to not only make up for lost revenue, but also for the good and protection of Defiance. The ending is somewhat heart-wrenching and not only sets-up the next novel, but leaves you wanting more!
This is the second book in the Defiance series that mainly focuses on a motorcycle club and it's members as they struggle to cope in a post apocalyptic world. The problems they face at times seem insurmountable but together they just might survive. The world has suffered a major catastrophe and chaos reigns. Where previously law and order prevailed now in this new world might is right! Matthias and his friend Bishop are trying to decide whether they should stay with the Defiance motorcycle club permanently. The compound is as safe as anywhere they have found but sometimes safety can be overrated. Is it luck or fate that places them at a moment in time that could change their lives? Spotting a young woman being sold as a slave Matthias can't just walk away. Something draws him to her but taking her from a rival motorcycle gang could have disastrous consequences . The fact that Matthias and Bishop kill the rival club leaders son isn't going to win them any points as it looks like all out war is heading their way! Jessa has been sheltered from the harsh realities of life in this new and turbulent land. The daughter of the Vice President she is privy to a lot of secrets about the government and is used to being a pawn but being taken hostage has really shaken her world . Being rescued by the mute but absolutely gorgeous Matthias just further complicates things. Life is too short to ignore the connection between them but Jessas very survival is at risk. Is she safe with Matthias and Defiance? Or will she find herself being sold out? One thing is certain if Matthias has a choice Jessas is staying with him! There are a lot of books recently about motorcycle clubs and the hard but protective men who form them. This series is slightly different from the rest as not only is it set in a futuristic and dangerous world but it's a new adult romance . This author knows how to hook her readers and writes stories that have many layers that keep the reader entranced. Dark and gritty with amazingly hot characters this book is a fabulous addition to the series. Loved the strong hero Matthias although it took me a while to connect with Jessa. As for Bishop well that guy deserves his own book and I sincerely hope it's soon! I'm not usually a huge fan of young adult books but with so much going on in this world that Ms Tyler has created it has to be a five from me!
Oh. My. God!!!! I really looovee this series!!!!!!!!! There are rare times when i actually love the second book in a series as much as i love the first one! Yeah!!! It means that i love Redemption as much as i love Defiance! Reedemption is a special book because the hero, Mathias, can't talk but in the same time he is comunicating much more than Caspar did in his book! Even if Mathias can't talk that doesn't mean he is disabled or not as much an alpha and badass as the others! He is a hot, uber sexy, uber dangerous alpha male!!! His 'can't talk' problem makes him even more dangerous and even more lethal! Jessa the heroine: at first i didn't like her at all! The words 'spoiled princess' were constantly floating in my mind in the first quarter of the book. Then i've realised she was acting that way because of the way she used to live, because of her parents and the way her tiny rich world used to be * being born with a silver spoon in your mouth it's not always as good and carefree as the others think* Jessa was hurt and broken even before Chaos, after that she was also betrayed and she got through some really hard weeks before she met Mathias. I like her even more because she understands the bond Mathias and Bishop share! Bishop: i love him so much and i think his soul is more damaged than Mathias'. He is Mathias' voice and he knows his brother more than he knows himself. He would do anything for Mathias and i respect him for that! At first i was afraid this story would be one of those menage stories, but no! The author showed us just how close can two brothers be, how a true bond is! ( and i'm talking about a bond between brothers) Even if Bish and Mathias are not blood related, they are related through a great friendship and loyalty and this is stronger than anything else! I can't friggin' waith for Bishop's story!!!!!! * when i started this story i was skeptical at the love at first sight ( Mathias) and at the way Jessa slept with Mathias like after 4 ours after she first ever saw him! But then i've realised that the times they were living are not what we are used to! After all in a post-apocaliptic world where danger haunts you from every side ( people and nature) your way of seeing and feeling things it's entirely different !!! After you realise that you will enjoy the story eve more!!! PEOPLE YOU MUST READ THIS SERIES!!!!!!!!!
First, this was the first "New Adult" book I've ever read, and I'm guessing that just means the characters are younger than 25?? Not sure, because everything else seems the same as the other books. I was thinking it meant maybe PG13 vs Young adult PG & other books R... Wrong answer!!
Second, this was the first true 'dystopia" book I've read other than a sci-fi novella a couple years ago.
This was a really good book! I am loving this series. I missed the first book, but I found reading this one only makes me want to read it for "MORE!!" because I never felt lost, but I want more of these stories, so I'm now dying to read the first one! I am so behind in my reading though, so I will have to wait, but WOW!! I WILL!!
This is going on my auto-buy list!!
In this post-apocalyptical world where gangs, Motorcycle Clubs, and the Mafia are your only real choices for protection & survival...Selling people as slaves ("anything goes" slaves) etc. is the way of the world, and to fight for your principles you have to go against them and kill someone...Two best friends rescue the Vice-Presidents daughter from being sold to an MC who was going to sell her to the Armenians blah blah, by her husband, the President's son. Scandal!!! They kill everyone & take off to their underground bunker/tubes & one of them feels he needs to protect her & keep her... It was cute. It was suspenseful & really good! I couldn't put it down! I wanted to know the who & why of it NOW!! so I kept reading!!
The author is amazing at her description of this dystopia world & many of her characters. Sometimes it was scary! It wasn't a world I wanted to live in! I caught a funny author moment when I think she may have realized she didn't describe an important character & had another character "truly look at him for the first time" and then he was described. Anh... maybe, maybe not, but it seemed like that, so I giggled a little.
This book/author was like Kristen Ashley crossed with a mad zombie (without zombies), the apocalypse & younger characters. And Kristen Ashley is THE BOMB!! Actually, Stephanie has already proven herself as a GREAT story teller, so she's ranked up there already!! If you haven't read any of her books, all I have to say is: "Where have you BEEN!!"

Welcome to the world post Chaos. A world where you live with the constant fear of the storm never ending and no guarantees of seeing the sun return. Mathias and Bishop have survived that world as best friends even if that's all they have left, joining up with the Defiance motorcycle club. While enjoying one of the few days filed with sun, they spot a girl being abducted and sold by a rival MC and Mathias can't just sit and watch, no matter what hell it will rain down on him. Bish has always had his back from the day they met, so the two intervene and save political golden child, Jessa Everson. Jessa discovered things were nothing like they seemed, and now finds herself at the hands of men who want to take advantage of her and her connections. What she didn't expect was for her image of an avenging angel to be transformed into a mute bad boy covered in tattoos, or the truths that are revealed in the coming months.
Redemption is my first journey into the Defiance series, as well as my first Stephanie Tyler experience, but it certainly won't be my last. This book completely swallowed me whole and spit me out. A book that took me on such a journey couldn't be anything less than 5 stars and a spot of my favorites list. Post Chaos is such an intriguing and original world that's scary in the reality that it's not entirely impossible. All the characters, including carry overs from the first book I never met before, and new supporting characters brought me into my own virtual world. There is always talk about chemistry between the two main characters romantically, and Mathias and Jessa had that for sure, along with steam through the roof, but my favorite relationship was that between Mathias and Bish. There was such a deep committed friendship that leaked through the pages, I loved that it was even part of Jessa and Mathias's development. I had no problem reading it as a stand alone. The descriptions of the characters, scenery, and new way of life are abundant and vivid. The writing is flawless and smooth, point of views changing in a charismatic way.
The second book in the Defiance series is an intriguing story that brings motorcycles clubs to a post apocalyptic future.
Matthias is driven to prove he’s tough enough to become a member of the Defiance motorcycle club, but when he sees a beautiful, spirited girl abducted by a rival MC, he rescues her knowing that it jeopardizes all he’s worked for. Kidnapped by the Lords of Vengeance, Jessa Everson fights every way she can and having Matthias save her is like gaining her own guardian angel in leather and tattoos. But now Jessa has to decide whether she’s strong enough to stay in the only place she’s ever known freedom or go back to the very people who betrayed her. Meanwhile, the people of Defiance have their own problems with the mafia and LoV’s.
This steady paced plot is full of suspense, romance, self discovery, some action and the fight for survival in a world in chaos. The author makes the reader feel as if they are part of the story by bringing it to life with vivid descriptions and strong compelling characters that capture the reader’s imagination.
The attraction between Jessa and Matthias radiates from every page and the sex scenes explode with passion. The relationship is fraught with turmoil and suspicion and the characters aren’t quite ready to trust that there’s such a thing as happiness. Matthias is a strong alpha male with protective instincts that make him the perfect hero in this post apocalyptic tale. The author uses great details that make the characters seem real and easy to relate to which leaves the reader waning to know more about not only the main couple, but all the characters in this futuristic world.
The world created by the author takes concepts from the present and puts them into a future full of chaos which adds a lot of depth and understanding to the story and the story, as well as the characters are belivalbe. I haven’t read the first one yet and I had no problem picking up where the characters stand and what is going on, although I do wish I had read the first one first so I would have had a little more background.
The second book in a series often feels more seamless at the beginning because the groundwork has already been laid. Redemption is no exception. Kick started with a reintroduction to Mathias and Bishop, a kidnapping, rescue, MC fight, and some nice little insta-love all in the first few minutes, once again, I was hooked. As we see Mathias and Jessa battle the issues that come with insta-love without insta-trust, we are also treated to a peeling back of the layers to the bond between Mathias and Bishop, as well as the forging of the bond between Jessa and both men individually and collectively. We are given an intimate look into their friendship; their love (romantic/sexual and platonic) and their world.
I found so many things about this trio compelling... At one time Mathias saved young Bishop from his father; now Bishop seems to save Mathias from himself. Bishop and Mathias were/are each others' homes, but Jessa gave them reason to plant roots. Roots - yes, Defiance, the MC. More conflict, betrayal, fighting, and resistance play out as the newly reorganized MC is still coming into its own. Of course the story is interwoven further with other blasts from the past, some we know and love, some we want to get to know, and some we know and hate. A good book isn't a good book if its leading women and men don't irritate the you-know-what out of you at some point!!!
As in the first book, we are treated to interesting, complex characters and intricate relationships. As much as this book is about Mathias and his new love, Jessa, it is also about the history of Mathias and Bishop. It is a credit to Stephanie Tyler's flair with the written word that Mathias, who is mute, is perhaps the greatest communicator in the book. Signing, lip reading, typing, writing, facial expressions and touch, both sexual and non are part of Mathias' non verbal arsenal, and boy, does he pack a punch (an insanely hot, sexy punch)! Ah, Mathias. I liked you in Defiance, but man, did I love you in Redemption. You're just all kinds of awesome, and so is this book!
Good gravy. I liked Caspar and Tru's story but I LOVED Matthias and Jessa's. Actually, I loved Matthias and Bish. Their bond gives me the happies. They've been a team since they were children and it comes through loud and clear in everything they do. When Matthias falls for Jessa (and he falls hard and fast, people!), Bish isn't threatened. He makes room for her in their lives. Man, I sort of love Bish.
Honestly, the biggest draw here was Matthias and Bish. I really liked the chemistry between Matthias and Jessa and I LOVED how she realized the two were connected in a way she could never separate. Not that she wanted to separate them, mind you, but she realized pretty quickly their bond was one that couldn't be broken without destroying one or both of them. So she found a way to fit into their lives. She accepted both of them and the violence that's so much a part of them.
Well done, Jessa. Well done.
Jessa also introduced another element to the overall world -- things might be bad for those that survived Chaos, but there was the potential for it to get so much worse. We got to see the dark underbelly of political maneuverings and they are nasty.
Good thing Jessa, Matthias and crew have a dark side of their own and are willing to push back when things get tough.
Enjoyable entry into the series. And might I just say.. Oh, Bish! I can't wait for your book. I'm all aflutter at the ending and... and... OH, BISH!
As much as this book is about Mathias and Jessa, it is also about Mathias and Bishop. At first I thought things were weird because when Mathias and Jessa were trying to be private, intimate Bishop was also there translating for Mathias. It didn't take too long until the three of them together seemed right. Mathias and Bishop had such a tight connection that you knew any relationship Mathias would have, couldn't happen without Bishop's approval.
I did get tried of the drama between Mathias and Jessa, but understood that both were scared of what they had with the other and for Jessa, her whole world had the potential to change big time. When Mathias and Jessa didn't let things intrude, they were good together. I loved how they were able to communicate through music, music that is considered a luxury in Chaos time.
I really liked the role that Bishop played with both Jessa and Mathias. Bishop seemed to be the voice of reason to both of them, getting the other to think things through. My heart broke when Mathias told the story of Bishop as a kid, how they grew up. It was those stories, the one especially, that made the choice that Bishop made at the end, make perfect sense in this crazy world. I worry for what will happen to him due to this choice, but love that Mathias and Jessa plan on being there to pick up the pieces when all is said and done.
"Being Defiance was the best way I knew how to protect her. So for her, I would stay here, make attachments. Risk everything. Because, by falling in love with her, I already had."
I loved book #2 in the Defiance series, Redemption was a great read. I loved the MC world in post-Chaos that was created here. It was gritty, frightening, strange and almost a little normal at the same time.
Stephanie Tyler created a great post-Chaos world and showed how much somethings can be similar and how vastly different they can be. Redemption was well written and engaging, it draws you in from the very beginning.
Redemption possesses an amazing love story. It is unique because Matthias is a mute and sometimes you have to read between the lines with him. Jessa was extremely courageous in this story and proved she was way more than a ditzy leading lady.
The best thing about Redemption in my book was the friendship between Bishop and Matthias. It is rare that a friendship survives that long but to become almost the same person is amazing. The were two halves of a whole and worked together fluidly.
I am going to pick up the first book, because I don't want to miss any of this series!
4.5 stars When Mathias and Bishop stumble upon a rival MC in the middle of a sex trafficking deal, they can't sit idly by and let it go down. Lucky for Jessa, whose husband sells her out at the last minute, Mathias decides to come to the rescue. They take out all the players, and take her to the Defiance compound. The attraction between Jessa and Mathias is instant and white-hot, but they both have to learn to trust each other. Mathias is mute, and Bishop usually does his translating, so in a way they are a package deal.
Jessa still has some secrets that she is keeping close to her chest, and Mathias knows it. He has a sense about things, and follows signs. He knows that she is the woman for him, but she has to find her own way for the first time ever.
This was a great read, I liked it even better than the first book! Mathias was stoic, dangerous, and of course smoldering hot. Jessa was smart, sexy, and overcame so much from her past. I can't wait to continue the series!
Wow!! This story gives incite to a different world-Chaos! Jessa the Vice President daughter learns some dangerous secrets and is appalled that her family thinks it's right to take out groups of people to ensure what's left of the world is within their control. She turns to her husband Charlie, who swears they will find someone to report this information too that will help the world left. Instead he tries to sell her to the mafia after having them kidnapped by a rival MC. Enter “Mathias and Bishop who jump in to save her, fighting and killing them, and taking her and Charlie to their compound. Jessa is attracted to Mathias and thankful that they helped her from a horrible situation. Events occur, while Bishop teaches Jessa to sign so she can communicate more with Mathias who is mute. Their love grows while both are willing to make sacrifices for the other and protect the MC. Very good story.
Redemption is the second book in the Defiance series by Stephanie Tyler.
I fell in love with this book from the moment I started reading it and couldn’t put it down.
The stand-alone quality was good although I would have liked more on how the Chaos started. I have not read the first book in the series but I am going to go back and read the first book for sure.
This is a series to follow!
Redemption is a motorcycle post apocalyptical book. It reminded of Kristen Ashley’s Motorcycle Man with Ms. Tyler’s spin. So if you are a fan of Motorcycle Men then check this book out.
Ms. Tyler’s characters jump off the page and capture your hearts. The Chaotic world is genius and the men are hot!
This story was enjoyable and engaging. The male lead in this story is intriguing with an exceptional sense of humor. I found myself laughing at several points during the book, because the male lead is just too funny. This book is a solid four stars on its own merit. However, if I had to choose between book one and book two in this series, I would say book one was definitely a better reading experience for me. Redemption had much of the same intensity and grit that you find in the original Defiance tale, I just felt like there was something missing between the love interests in this story; there just didn't seem to be enough conflict. I also felt the story ended too abruptly. There was no preparation that the story was coming to an end, it just stopped. I wanted more of a finished tale, as the author provided in book one.
Lots of yumminess and chemistry between Mathias and Jess in this book, "no," I told him. "Not hard at all." As if to prove it, I ran my hands over his shoulders, pressed my lips to his neck and then fluttered over his throat like I was worshiping it. He bared his throat, granting me the access I wanted. And I wanted." Mathias the man likes to mark his woman to make sure that she is really is, "he leaned in bit me on the other side of the neck. Marking me. Claiming me." Jess also knows what to say to give her man a welcome home, "missed you, Mathias. Touched myself thinking about you. Missed all of this." Now Mathias may lack hearing but that boy is ALL man, and I'm really excited for Bishop's story.
Mathias is looking for a home and Jessa is looking to escape. when Mathias and his best friend oversee a kidnapping deal they have to intervene to save the girl Jessa. After taking her and her ex home to the Defiance compound Mathias learns that she is a lot more than she admits to being. I loved this 2nd book in the Defiance series. Learning more about the Chaos and how it changed the world. I like that we got to see more interactions between Casper and Tru and learned more about the other members of Defiance like Mathia's best friend Bish. I can't wait for the next installment of this series. Hopefully it will bring us a lot more Bishop.
