I looked at the man in front of me, he didn't look scary or threatening, to anyone else he looked harmless. He had a wide white smile that could make any girl melt, he had shaggy long blonde hair and innocent baby blue eyes. His Australian accent added to his worldly charm. He looked like a sweet and kind surfer but with a jaw gripped tight that showed anger. I looked down at the blade gripped in his palm and the blood dripping from the edges. His face read that of almost sorrow, but only almost. I looked at the floor, my voice lost in a scream.

I looked down at her soft cheeks, her auburn hair and her still green eyes. She wasn't blinking, she wasn't breathing. I saw the crimson red spread from her cut throat all over the Italian marble floor. It seeped into the cracks. This girl, this fifteen year old girl with blood staining her favourite floral dress... She couldn't be my sister, I wouldn't believe it.

I foolishly thought this would be the worst day of my life.

That was the day I was taken, that was the day I met Draco.

Chapter Two - Draco

I breathed in the Italian air, I had never visited Italy before, I had only been here a week but it wasn't looking promising. Usually we went to Romania or Istanbul but we needed something different, someone different.
I have been with Rahul for two years, he worked in a very stern business, he wasn't a nice man, he was a psychopath, I had watched him beat girls senseless, rape them until they bled and sell girls as young as thirteen. Once I was out of this mess I was going to kill him, I had no interest in any fucked up justice with Rahul, and I wanted vengeance for all the woman and girls that suffered down to him.

I was the recruiter today; I had to choose her, all this time they never expected me to choose one. Rahul had made it sound like a privilege.
"You've been here long enough, you know how it works. You choose the best, the most beautiful, the easy target and the one with the least mess to clean up. We watch in the shadows and then strike"

“I don't know, Rahul. I mean I've watched you choose every girl but of course I need a lesson on what to do; I’m more than fucking ready"
I had to impress him, I had to choose the perfect girl for him, and my life depended on it. I had to think of the other people in this, the other women that would be saved through this sacrifice. Once I had proved my worth, Rahul would finally accept me and I would be in place to do what I came here to achieve.

I was on the hotel balcony, I needed to choose her soon and this eagle eye view was the only way to pick someone without anyone suspecting us. You never interact with a product before you're claiming it; I decided to forget what might happen to her, what she might have to endure, it had to happen. I saw a lone girl; she had long chocolate brown hair down to her breast bone and lightly tanned skin, her eyes were covered by large dark sunglasses and her lips were pursed slightly. She looked a little scared and yet strong. I saw her pull out a map from her draw string black bag. She squinted at the map and stood firmly to the spot. Suddenly her face lit up and I heard another voice, a British voice.

"Aimee! The hotel is right there. I told you we were close." This girl was younger; at a guess I would say sixteen at the most. She was stunning and I heard Rahul come up behind me.

"Nice eye there, Draco. The red head is perfect. I would fetch a lot for her. The brunette is okay, but two girls could be tricky. I must say I am impressed, newbie."

That was it, I couldn't say no. I couldn't choose anyone else. I looked at Rahul; his eyes fed lust and want as he stared at the young girl. My stomach flipped and I tried to act nonchalant. Rahul had dark skin, a wide nose and eyes that could cripple you to the ground; I had never seen eyes so black. He was short but had more muscle than fat. I had fought him once and I knew how much strength he held.

"Rahul, I have an idea. You get the red head and I get the brunette. I think I could teach her a few things" I finished my response with a wink and Rahul laughed and punches my arm lightly.

"Knew I kept you around for a reason"

I already had a plan in place, I just hoped that it was worth it and more than that I hoped I could go through with it.

"We need to have the key to the room, Rahul. How else will be abduct them?" I said with a tiny plea in my voice.
"Well we haven't studied them yet; we may be wasting time on this"
"Come on, were will we find two girls like that. British girls none the less" I was trying to be persuasive but I had a feeling it wasn't working too well.

"British? Well in that case..." he handed me his wad of cash from the inside of his tailor made suit jacket "...you better get down there fast and have a word with reception".

**Please note that this storyline contains heavy violence and non-consensual sexual activity**

I read books about people in motorcycle clubs with appalled fascination...
I read books about people with too many sexual partners at one time, and I think about throwing up...
One too many "I love you´s" in a book sometimes make me experience second-hand-embarrassment...

But when I read about a character experiencing "Stockholm-Syndrome", I am sitting on the edge of my seat and wait for the H and the h to declare their love to each other....

How sick is that???
I think, I have to get my head examined...

This was such a gripping read, the pages seemed to turn themselves, I simply couldn´t stop reading.
A well-written short story with a very surprising ending, which left me wanting more!
Two more of this kind are to be released...
...so I just have to be patient!

The story

This book is thought provoking, dark, and emotional. It touches on taboo subjects that are very much a harsh reality in the world. The author does not glorify or glamorize them, in my opinion.

The characters

I absolutely loved the characters, even the dreadful ones. They gave a dark and demented twist to the story that was needed. This book could not have been as good without them.

I thought all the characters were very realistic. The dialogue flow throughout the book felt very natural.

Most of the main character focus was on Aimee and Draco. I loved the different point of views and feeling like I was getting inside their head. The book was written in such a way that I was able to connect with the characters, even though I personally didn't relate to the characters.

The series

It can be read as a stand alone (even with the cliffhanger), but I doubt anyone could read this book and not get hooked. I'm very anxiously awaiting for the rest of the series.

Overall

Great plot, subplots, characters, and dialogue.
The subject matter might not be for everyone, is the only warning that I can think to give.

This was a very good, dark surprise!
I actually really loved this book. I've always been a fan of Stockholm syndrome storylines and this one didn't disappoint.

This was similar to other stories where beautiful girl goes on extravagant vacation and gets kidnapped with intentions of being traded as a sex slave.
For me what set this apart was the pure evil named Rahul as well as Draco's lack of sensitivity towards Aimee even when he wanted to care. They were ugly and cruel, dark and nasty. The end came abruptly (yet perfectly) and with a shit load of questions.

The biggest reason for 4 stars instead of 5 was the flow of the book. The writing was a little choppy and although I enjoy duel POV, these were all over the place at times. It's a shorter, fast paced read and I've never been a huge fan of short. I always prefer when everything is jam packed into a great big book.

All in all I really enjoyed and am jumping right into the next.

" You will be sold, and you will be a slave. That is your future. Do not get confused about that."

This was "the little girl in the elevator" kind of fucked up.

When Aimee, 23, & Erin, 15, loose their mother to cancer Aimee decides to blow her savings and take Erin on a trip to Rome for her birthday. They catch the attention of two predators, Rahul & Draco, belonging to a organisation who kidnap women and sell them as sex slaves.

I sat in the far corner of the Spanish Steps watching my delicious prey, pointing my camera at the two girls. I knew what I would do once I got the young, virginal girl. I couldn't wait to break her in, bruise her soul and tear her apart. The look in those big green eyes when I taught her how to obey me, the look would be so arousing. I wanted to tear her and make her bleed. Make her howl in pain.

I have read a number of books of women being kidnapped for the sex industry, but the author managed to create and hold the feel of angst in just 100 pages.
Aimee learns that she "I am a product. I... I am nothing." the hard way. She gets beaten everyday to make her accept her destiny for the rest of her life.

This book is a short story about Stockholm syndrome, or is it?

‘"You will pay."…suddenly your joy will turn to ashes in your mouth, and you'll know the debt is paid’.

Stockholm Syndrome is not something I imagined written as fiction. Aimee walks in the room just after Draco murders her 15 year old sister. Draco then proceeds to kidnap her with the intent to train and sell her as a sex slave. In Draco's mind he kills Aimee's sister to protect her from the horror Rahul plans for her.

Draco's partner in the sex trade is Rahul and he is unthinkably horrible. When he is asked by a woman why is he like he is, he tells her "I know what I like and women are just a way for me to enjoy my life. I use women because that's the way it works . My father used my mother, and I use the women I want. I don't feel sad for hurting them, they are here for me" after which he raped the woman.

This book has some intriguing twists and I was left hanging with a surprise twist at the end. This book is dark and is not an hea romance. I liked the author's idea on how the book switches between the characters points of view, I just wish the book was longer so we could get better insight and character development. I would have given this book 4 stars if this book was not a short story and we were not left with a cliffhanger ending.

SPOILERS AHEAD FOR BOTH MESSY AND SHATTERED AND CJ ROBERTS'S DARK DUET....For all of the 4 & 5 star reviewers, PLEASE, PLEASE read CJ Roberts's The Dark Duet series. Afterwards, I am quite sure you will see Messy and Shattered pales in comparison. Where CJ' s writing is sophisticated, dark, enthralling and heart wrenching, Mercy Cortz's writing is pedestrian. Additionally, an editor or BETA is needed. Grammatical errors, found often, were a distraction. What is most disappointing about Messy and Shattered? Too many of the plot and character developments correspond to CJ Roberts's DD. Draco is physically similar to CJ' Caleb. Like Caleb, Drago speaks with an accent and is responsible for choosing and training his victim. Like Caleb was with Livie, Draco is conflicted about his treatment of Aimee. He begins to develop feelings for Aimee, which is another similarity to Caleb and Livie. I was so frustrated with the blatant rip-off of The Dark Duet, that I stopped reading at 56%. After skipping to the end, I was not surprised to find that an additional book will be published. Guess what? It is titled Epilogue, just as was CJ' s final book. Ugh!!!!! On behalf of all CJ Roberts fans, I say, "I want a refund!!!!!!!!!!"

It fell really flat for me. There was no actual sex and what there was just had me rolling my eyes at the boringness (is that a word?) of it. The warnings in the blurb had me all ready for some horror filled, dark read and this was... Not that. Disappointing and boring.

A very disturbing read, but I must say I did enjoy it and look forward to the next book. Even though this is fiction, it is unbelievably daunting to think that there are things going on out there in the world that are similar to this story. I think that is why this book will frighten people. The fact that you can just be walking down the road and suddenly the world you know changes, and not in a good way, but in a way unimaginable!

A well written and thought provoking story!

This is not the kind of book I would usually pick up. The subject matter and warning enough to make me run a mile! However, once started, I couldn’t put it down. I read it within a couple of days and (feel slightly wrong to say) I enjoyed it.

I had expected a slightly different ending but it left you wanting to read on. I believe the next book will clear up any questions I have hanging.

Puss'n'Books, Reviewing The Darkest, Most Erotic And Taboo Books We can Find.

I’m afraid this book didn’t quite grab a hold of me, guys.

I liked the idea and the characters were okay...but the writing style just wasn’t my thing (just my personal preference).

I found it almost chaotic at times and I had a hard time understanding what the characters were trying to express and how they felt at different times.

DRACO
This guy and his partner are in Rome looking for a girl to abduct and train in order to sell her into the slave trade.

In the begining it sounds like Draco hates his partner and everything that he has done, wanting to take him down. Which is fine but then he goes on about wanting to “break” Aimee and even kills Erin - her sister. So I really wasn’t sure what his game was.

He seemed against anything evil on one page but then he was doing just as bad on the next page. I get people having doubts and impulse issues etc. but I got whip-lash from this guy.

Later on it did explain why he was doing some of what he was doing, but still...

AIMEE
I liked this girl but found her reactions to some of these situations to be off.

I understand Stolkhome syndrome, and some of my fave books (The Dark Duet by C.J. Roberts is AMAZING!) have this in it, but in my head, it would take more than a few days in order for this to develop, and it seemed like after he killed her sister, abducted her, beat her with a hockey stick for several days while trying to get her to eat moldy food with maggots on it, she fell in love somehow. Rather quick, if you ask me.

Now granted, he was the lesser of two evils but still...

Some of the spelling and grammar was a little off too, but I am awful with that stuff and so I really have no room to talk. BUT, this made me giggle so freakin’ hard -

I removed the shirt he had placed on me, and the mirror betrayed me yet again and showed my scared nipple in all its glory, I felt tears in my eyes, but I held them back.

Now, I know it’s meant to be a “scarred” nipple and it’s just a wee mistake that I have made many times but, all I can imagine is a nipple, freakin’ the hell out, trying to scream and run away!

FINAL THOUGHTS on MESSY AND SHATTERED by Mercy Cortez
I did like the idea of the story, I love a good Stockholm syndrome book, but I just couldn’t quite get into the writing style or character’s personalities. However, it’s one that a lot of others really enjoyed. If you’ve read it, feel free to chat with me about it :-)

beware this is a very dark book. However this is the exact book I love. The characters are beautifully laid out. Aimee and her sister go on a trip which change their lives and the lives of the other characters dramatically. This book is about Stockholm Syndrome but who does it pertain to? The Captor or the Captee? how is love Defined? there is one quote that stuck out thru out the book " Beware of what you wish you for" I do not want to put spoilers in just to post how much I loved this story.

I have read a few Dark Romance books now and I know they aren't everyone's cup of tea but I really do love reading them and whilst I enjoyed this one it didn't blow me away. Messy and Shattered is extreme in its graphic depictions of violence however I didn't really get the feeling of 'darkness' from it.

The book is about 100 pages long and in my opinion it is way too short. I felt that we needed a much longer book so that we could get to know the characters better. There isn't much in the way of character development in this one and it lacked because of it.

What I love in Dark Romance, especially where Stockholm Syndrome is the focus, is that the author builds the tension and relationship between the abductor and the abducted. Again because of the length we didn't get this and I missed that.

As I said the violence is graphic so if you haven't read a book like this before please think before you do. I think I'm a bit desensitized to it now though and even thought I was shocked I didn't have too much of a problem with it. This book has great promise and I hope that we get to see the author write a full length book. Messy and Shattered gets 3 stars from me.

this book...it WAS messy and shattered. I LOVED IT!!! an amazing amazing read.

i am head over heels in love with Draco. he is HOT HOT HOT!!! but i also kinda hated him for what he did (although his reason did make sense...kinda) Draco is definitely a bad boy but has a sweet nature towards Amy. he reminded me a lot of Caleb from "captive in the dark." no, i'm not comparing them. they are complete two different people. i'm saying it because draco had a lot of inner conflict and turmoil of emotions, just like Caleb. i questioned his motives. at times they seemed a bit off track (again...inner conflict) but he was absolutely an awesome character. LOVE!!!!

I LOVED Aimee. the girl was just too awesome. she knew the difference between right or wrong. although her captor is her only hope and he protects her and he is hot, she didn't just fall on her back for him. she fought. she came to an understanding about him but she didn't just let everything go. her priorities were straight and right. she knew what she had to do and nothing was going to change her mind. i loved her determination. Aimee was very strong and i absolutely support her through what she wanted to do.

the book doesn't have a lot of sex scenes (which i loved) there were immense sexual tension between Amy and draco but that wasn't the focus of the book. the focus was the story and Aimee and draco's transformation and survival. the ending kinda threw me off. i would get into it but then i'm gonna have to spoil it which i really don't want to.

the story was also very intense, violent and DISTURBING. emphasizing disturbing because...well, you are just gonna have to read it

This book is pretty dark and twisted. I did have the pleasure of reading parts of it before it was released, I just now finally got to finish it.
For Mercy to write this book after the great love stories she wrote is kind of a shock. Totally opposite writing.
she really did her home work.
Amie is a great character, strong minded but also in the end weak without knowing why. Stockholm syndrome ...maybe or did she just want to be close to Draco because she had nothing left,no family and the strong desire to kill him eventually?!
It kind of makes you think . I really can't wait to read the next book.
This book is a great read and for someone who knows nothing about how a victim of this type can fall in love with their captor this will help you to understand. although with Amiee being a phys student it may have a twist we haven't for seen.
she's a very smart girl. I also think Draco was under cover so long he realized he had enough before he really turned into a killer for good not a CIA agent anymore sand Amide saved him. But will he see it coming when she seeks her revenge or can she really do it. a lot of unanswered questions if you think about it.
No doubt a great read. Its a book you can read again and not get bored with it.
I love Mercy's writing and for her first book of horror as I say.....its fantastic!
looking forward to Jethro's story sand I hope she doesn't keep us waiting too long on Amiee and Draco.
5 star read.

Part 1 of 3? I dunno, are all 3 out? I am all about this blurb!!!! Oh and the cover! I'm getting goosebumps. I am seriously considering this, if all 3 are out :D

This book delves into the "Stockholm Syndrome" of a captive girl who is being readied for a sex-slave auction after seeing her 15 year old sister murdered by Draco.

We have 2 characters who are the captors "Draco" and "Rahul". These 2 are the good cop/bad cop and the horrors of what Rahul is capable of is SICK and DEMENTED!!!

In no way shape or form am I condoning to the horrors of what Aimee went through with Draco and labeling him a GOOD COP but IMHO - if I had to choose....

Just read the book.

Most will think this book is too much, but I guess I must be a little twisted because I really liked it. The story was very unique and different and hell, very unexpected. I wasn't to impressed with the ending though and felt like if this book was longer with more details and background information it could have been a 5 star book for me. It felt like we were just getting the surface of things rather than the depth. And I need my depth to give a book 5 stars ;)This is a very dark book, so if that is not your thing then I would bypass this one.

Never did I think I would like a book that was so...dark. I started reading and almost stopped after the first few pages realizing what I was getting into. Then, I was rather intrigued. This book is...amazing. Very dark, but true to life. This crap actually happens. In fact, Aimee and her sister were lucky! I don't want to give a lot away, so I'll leave it at that.

Really good book, and I'm excited to read about Jethro, and then get back to Aimee.

Rome Italy. Aimee Davies (23, sister, narrator) was the legal guardian of Erin Daniela Davies (15, little sister).
Their dad had deserted them long ago. Mom had succumbed to cancer.
Rahul (ex-BF, sadistic, abusive) & Draco were into human trafficking.
Aimee & Erin would stay at the Grand Hotel Plaza.
Niccolo took their bags to their room.
Things weren’t quite what Aimee had imagined.

1 day Aimee was about to give Erin her birthday present; a Tiffany & Co. box & when she looked into the room her sister had been murdered. Blood was everywhere.

Who is Jethro? & Why is Aimee seeing him?
Where did Nicole Gregory come from?

MESSY AND SHATTERED is your typical tale of abduction except with a few twists... First, one of the captors is secretly a good guy. Second, the classic Stockholm Syndrome isn’t so classic since the abductor is the one catching feelings. This book was well written, graphically dark and entertaining. I liked how the action started immediately without a lot of unnecessary filler, keeping the story brief and to the point. On the negative side, this is definitely not a complete, “book“ but a collection of chapters that when combined with the other installments will hopefully form a full book. I look forward to reading the next installment to see what happens between Draco and Aimee!

This is a harsh book to read and it does stay with you for a while. Not for the feint of heart at all.
Thanks to Net Galley for my copy.
