MeZolith (Vol. 2): Όταν o φόβος της ενηλικίωσης περιπλέκεται με την ιδεοληψία
Η σειρά των Ben Haggarty και Adam Brockbank, σε μετάφραση της Jemma Press, συνεχίζει την επιτυχημένη της πορεία στον ελληνικό χώρο, προσθέτοντας νέες εμπειρίες από την συλλογική μνήμη της φυλής των Κάνσα.
Η συνέχεια της σειράς έρχεται να ικανοποιήσει κάθε προσδοκία του αναγνωστικού κοινού του πρώτου κόμικ, αλλά και να το συστήσει εκ νέου εξαιτίας της αφηγηματικής της αυτοτέλειας. Ο πήχης είχε ήδη τεθεί ψηλά, οπότε αυτό που προσφέρει το δεύτερο κόμικ είναι μια πιο ώριμη ματιά, ενώ παράλληλα επαναθεμελιώνει το γνωστό προϊστορικό κόσμο της φυλής των Κάνσα(ακολουθούν ελάχιστα spoiler).
Κεντρικός ήρωας παραμένει ο Πόικα, ο οποίος δεν είναι πια ανέμελο παιδάκι που πάσχιζε να μάθει το κυνήγι. Ενόσω προχωράει προς την ενηλικίωση, νέες συνήθειες και υποχρεώσεις έρχονται να προστεθούν στον ρόλο του στην φυλή και το αγόρι δεν μπορεί παρά να τις παρατηρεί με αβεβαιότητα και φόβο. Συνεχίζει να διακατέχεται από ένα αίσθημα ευθύνης προς τους υπόλοιπους της φυλής, αλλά πια τείνει να πάρει την θέση του στον αντρικό πληθυσμό, οπότε πρέπει να διαλέξει και σύζυγο. Αυτή είναι ίσως η κυριότερη επιθυμία του Πόικα, που τον γεμίζει παράλληλα και φόβο. Δεν είναι εξοικειωμένος με τις ερωτικές σχέσεις και παρερμηνεύει καταστάσεις, καταλήγοντας σε μεγαλύτερη σύγχυση. Αυτό το κενό αναπληρώνεται με μύθους και ιδεοληψίες που έχουν επιβιώσει στην προφορική παράδοση της φυλής και αποτελούν συγχρόνως την αφηγηματική ραχοκοκκαλιά του δεύτερου τεύχους. Βέβαια, ο Πόικα στο τέλος φαίνεται να αποδέχεται(;) την νέα του ταυτότητα και να περνάει συμβολικά μια μεταμόρφωση, που αναμένουμε να δούμε πως θα εξελιχθεί.
Φαίνεται λοιπόν αναπόφευκτη πια η συναισθηματική σύνδεση του κοινού με τον Πόικα, κάτι που έλειπε από το προηγούμενο τεύχος. Τότε παρατηρούσαμε σχεδόν από επιστημονική, ανθρωπολογική πολλές φορές, ματιά τους Κάνσα, ως ουσιαστικά δρώντα πρόσωπα στην προϊστορική Αγγλία, την μακρινή περίοδο του 10.000 π.Χ. Τώρα αλλάζοντας κάπως αυτήν την κατεύθυνση, το MeZolith 2 φαίνεται να βρήκε την συνταγή της επιτυχίας και να διαβαίνει σε ένα καλοδομημένο αφηγηματικό περιβάλλον μέσα στο οποίο μπορεί να πατήσει και να δώσει ένα σαφές στίγμα στο ξένο κόμικς. Άλλη μια φορά, ο Adam Brockband βαδίζει σχεδιαστικά στα ίδια βήματα με τον συγγραφέα Ben Haggarty και όποτε αποφασίζει να αυτονομηθεί, μας χαρίζει καρέ και σελίδες που ξεδιπλώνουν το ταλέντο του. Οι πιο σκοτεινοί τόνοι και η αντίθεση με το λευκό δημιουργούν μια σκοτεινή και μυστηριακή ατμόσφαιρα με κέντρο την προσπάθεια της σεξουαλικής αφύπνισης του Πόικα, παρά την αθωότητα της παιδικής ηλικίας. Θάνατος, μητρότητα, αποδοχή, κυριαρχία και υποταγή είναι επίσης κυρίαρχα μοτίβα που περικλείονται από απωθημένα, επιθυμίες και ιδεοληψίες της συλλογικής μνήμης των Κάνσα. Είναι απίστευτο πως μικρές λεπτομέρειες και αντικείμενα που βρίσκονται διάσπαρτα στις μικρές αυτοτελείς ιστορίες καταφέρνουν να ψυχολογικοποιήσουν με τόσο κρυστάλλινο τρόπο την ψυχική διάθεση των προσώπων και να αποτελέσουν μια σημαντική προσθήκη στην εξιστόρηση.
Εκτός από τα υπόλοιπα τεχνικά ζητήματα που προϋπήρχαν και στο πρώτο τεύχος, αξίζει να αναφερθεί η πολύ καλή εκτύπωση, η ποιότητα του χαρτιού και η μετάφραση του πρωτότυπου κειμένου από την Βασιλεία Βαξεβάνη, που δεν στερείται τίποτα σε επίπεδο νοήματος και συνοχής.

Rather pleasingly, Haggarty and Brockbank’s Mezolith has returned with another collection of tales set in Stone Age Britain. The tales further expand on the beliefs and experiences of the Kansa tribe, and young Poika in particular as he prepares to leave boyhood behind.
This book, along with its predecessor, offers an incredible insight into the lives of our ancestors as they struggle for survival in an environment they know intimately but have little true understanding of. In turn this means they apply their own stories and anthropomorphic explanations to make sense of it all, and that mysticism and magic that then pervades their lives becomes infused in these stories. The result creates a slightly off-kilter form of storytelling that feels both close to nature and oddly disconnected from the real world.
Perhaps the most compelling example of this is the opening tale involving two sisters who are abducted by stars to become their lovers. Told during a gathering of tribes as a lesson to a group of gathered young woman it weaves myth and superstition with the expectations of those coming of age to create a cautionary tale. By seeing the world through the tribe’s eyes we can better understand how religion and legend took hold of the imaginations of early people.
The crowning glory of these wonderfully crafted tales is the outstanding artwork of Adam Brockbank who brings a beautiful realism to early Britain, from the brutal hunts to the inter-tribal stresses, giving each and every character a distinct personality and every animal an intense realism that allows them to leap from the pages.
There are very few graphic novels out there that combines such imaginative storytelling with first-class art, so if you’re after something refreshingly different that won’t disappoint then this just has to be the book for you.

This is the second volume of Mezolith: Stone Age Dreams and Nightmares by storyteller Ben Haggarty and artist Adam Brockbank, and it follows the events (and stories) in volume one (which I enjoyed thoroughly). Set 10,000 years ago, it is the story of the young boy Poika and the Kansa tribe, to which he belongs. Also, it is a story about stories and myths; and perhaps even more importantly about storytelling itself.
This second volume offers new depths of darkness, both visually and story-wise, but also soars into the light and the hope it brings - essentially earning its subtitle fairly.
After reading the first volume, I was left looking forward to this one; and here I find myself yet again, anxiously awaiting the next instalment.

Ένα βιβλίο ταξίδι στο παρελθόν και στο μύθο. Μέσα από απλές ιστορίες γίνεται η σύνθεση μιας μεγαλύτερης η οποία είναι και το ταξίδι του ήρωα, εάν μπορεί κάποιος να τον χαρακτηρίσει έτσι μέσα στη καθημερινότητά του. Το 1ο βιβλίο μπορώ να πω ότι ήταν ελάχιστα παραπάνω από αυτό σε δομή, αλλά αυτο υπερισχύει σε συναίσθημα. Δε μετάνοιωσα προς στιγμή τα ελάχιστα χρήματα που κόστιζε. Ίσως να φανεί σε κάποιους αρκετά απλοικό, αλλά νομίζω ότι αξίζει να διαβαστεί ξανά και ξανά!

Such a beautiful graphic novel! Really one of the best I've ever read. The art is beautiful and immersive, and the writing brings out real, deep characters immersed in indiginous Northern Europe life. Ben Haggarty avoids dramatic cliches in favor of going deeper into character and world, so the climaxes of the story don't feel contrived but human.

Končno sm prebral nadaljevanje :)
Narisano je čist zmešan dobr, zgodba je zanimiva, mal bl se mi je zdela strašljiva kt taprva, ampak še zmer čist fajn! Edino prehitr se je vse kočalo, kr premal je blo :)
Zlo všeč sta mi bla Poika in nema deklica, k se je samo z njim pogovarjala, ker je bil prjazen z njo... pa zgodba s konji, je žalostna... k mu ne verjamejo da se jih da jahat... ne vem pa če sm čist razumel konc, se mi je zdel mal posebej od zgodbe...

La storia matura insieme al protagonista, alla sua crescita e alla sua tribù.
Certe usanze vengono approfondite e riscoperte così come l'interiorità di Poika. Il sogno fa da sfondo e da protagonista, i racconti sono gradevolissimi compagni e la suddivisione in capitoli agevola di tanto la lettura rendendola scorrevole e piacevole.

A pleasant read, set around 10kya. The stories of a Mezolithic tribe, their beliefs and their stories.
We have Poika, growing up to become a man, and the "scary" stories of survival in that day and age.
Quite comforting at the end of the day.

Διαβάζεται κι αυτό το τεύχος μονορουφι όπως και το πρώτο. Υπέροχες εικόνες. Η λίθινη εποχή σε όλο της το μεγαλείο με όλες τις προκαταλήψεις που μπορεί να είχε.

I guess I’m hooked
So I actually liked this one better than volume 1. I love the stories within the story. The graphics are amazing.

Brilliant
The art of storytelling is alive and well and despite a few apparent inconsistencies, it is a masterpiece, well crafted, beautifully drawn and with the right pace.

Since finding volume one, I have had to wait a couple of years for this new volume and it didnot disappoint. There are several strands with the story and I look forward to see how they play out over future volumes. Ben Haggarty weaves the prehistoric past with story telling techniques and Adam Brockbank's artwork is superb.
My only quibble and it is more to do with format. The DFC volume was bigger and the artwork deserves a bigger stage than the traditional comic book size. Am I going to have waiting another couple of years for the next volume? I hope not.

January 13, 2018me gusta mucho el enfoque que le dan a este libro y como se transmitian las historias "oralmente" fue lo mejor, y los dibujos!! unas obras de arte!! aunque el final me dejo intrigado!! hay una tercera parte??
