John Daulton’s Hostiles brings the opening trilogy of the bestselling The Galactic Mage series to its pulse-pounding denouement. With the apparent betrayal by Blue Fire sending the forces of Earth and the forces of Prosperion whirling into chaos, what’s to become of Altin and Orli’s love, much less their lives? And worse, failed diplomacy now risks the lives of billions more as war rages across the galaxy, the very heavens bloated by the hate of so many races bent on revenge and dominance.
Hostiles picks up the story where Rift in the Races left off, leaving Altin and Orli struggling to survive the fallout of failed interplanetary politics. Somehow, they must endure the intergalactic menace of planet-sized magic, a vengeful space fleet, and the untimely rise of a jealous orc army bent on righting the wrongs of humanity’s Prosperion past. And not only must they endure it, they must, if possible, make it right.
Holy bat guano, the battles just get better book after book! I did keep waiting for Andru's Cavalry to come in and turn the tide a bit there at the end, guess they are busy doing something epic elsewhere...? I have read a complaint or two about the "conversations" between Altin and Blue Fire being to difficult to follow...I didn't notice any issue. In fact there were probably a couple of times where I was reading along thinking to myself "Come on Altin this one is simple!" Orli started to have me worried in book three as well with her never ending whining; but, she finally found some inner strength and demonstrated that she just might be deserving of Altin after all. Looking forward to more!
My goodness!! I was captivated all the way to yet another cliffhanger of an ending. The battles both internal and external are fierce and I can feel each characters emotion. I can't wait for the next book and see where the characters go from here.
In this book Orli does become more mature and decisive. Altin has a bigger role than he does in book two. Diplomacy has completely failed, the powers that be on Earth believe that they have been betrayed and that the people of Kurr are working with the hostiles to destroy Earth. Captain Asad does his best to report the worst interpretation of everyone's actions except his own. In Kurr, the orcs are coming and they are bringing friends. At the same time, the planet Blue Fire has her own problems and needs Altin's help. This book has lots of action, violence, war, magic, marauding planets, politicians and the Marines. Many of the loose ends are tied up in this book but there are enough questions left for additional books. I recommend this book especially if you read the previous books in the series first.
Being three books in, I obviously enjoy this series, and this book is no exception. It's the details in the way that the fantasy and the science fiction societies are both as deep and functional as one another, despite their significant differences. This book involved mind-bending cosmic events, and some pretty intense drama. There was a lot more terrestrial combat in this book, which was interesting, but plenty of space fighting, as well. This book covers a lot of ground, which I appreciate, because it doesn't really dumb things down. I'm glad I took a chance on this theory, and am interested to read the rest.
John Daulton has an amazing series here. With this third installment, he writes the culmination of the conflict started in book one.
With fleshed out characters and a story line that is unique, I have really enjoyed this series. His way with words are eloquent and so descriptive, you feel like you're there.
Each book layers upon the one before it, building the story with dragging it out. His characters, while living in a fantasy world, are as regular as anyone IRL and face life as we must with its ups and downs.
I haven't enjoyed a series as much as this since the Belgariad series by David Eddings.
Pick up the series, I don't think you'll be disappointed.
Hostiles at Earth and Orcs and Demons on prosperion. Tempers flare and accusations made, death sentences pronounced. What will happen can Humanity be saved? I can't wait to read next book.
