Ever fall head over heels in love with a guy or feel like you’d jump off a bridge for him? Well that’s Sam’s problem. It’s the first week of college and he’s following his jock of a roommate around like a puppy dog. It’s pretty pathetic and he knows it. Then he sits down next to this little nerd in his English class and things change. “The Three of Us” is a story of first loves, coming of age and friendship.
This story was written as a part of the M/M Romance Group's "Love Has No Boundaries" event. Group members were asked to write a story prompt inspired by a photo of their choice. Authors of the group selected a photo and prompt that spoke to them and wrote a short story.
Stephen del Mar is a fresh voice in Southern Gay Fiction. His Bennett Bay collection of books and stories explore life in that unique corner of the American South known as Florida. He also writes fantasy and science-fiction. Del Mar lives in the Tampa Bay region of Florida and enjoys Key Lime Pie and mango margaritas, but not at the same time. He also finds constantly barking Chihuahuas nearly as distracting to the writing process as Facebook and Twitter, but don’t tell his housemate.
The title is very misleading. It's not a polyamorous romance.
The story is about the first week in college of best friends Sam Richards and Reed Jackson. Sam meets Jeff, and falls in love with him (yes, immediately). Reed is straight by the way, so no romance between him and Sam. Though Sam mentions some secret crush on him at the beginning of the story, it is quickly forgotten. So if you expect some MMM action, it's not your story.
I really should’ve DNF’d this thing. Why didn't I? This &^%$#* Gang Bang Challenge!
I hate the protagonist, Sam. He’s an asshat. Excuse me, a pithy, manipulative, selfish, conceited, juvenile, impulsive, vapid, melodramatic asshat. Or in the parlance of a 5 yr old, he’s a meanie. Here are just a few winners from him:
“Fucking right I’m a man. I got a big dick, low-hanging balls, a tight bubble butt and an amazing swimmer’s build. Not to mention a winning personality.”
*I beg to differ on the winning personality bit but thanks for informing me of the necessary ingredients to prove manhood.
“I know I sounded ridiculous, but that’s just what my life was right now.”
*So glad to hear you have no choice in the matter. That clears things up a bit.
“Like you don’t want some swim-ass.”
*WTH is “swim-ass”? It sounds most unpleasant & pruney.
“What? If you can handle me being pretty, I can handle you being smart.”
*headdesk*
“But I only met him yesterday. How can I feel this intense about someone I’ve just met?”
*Uh oh the dreaded insta-love & shouldn’t that be intensely?
(The following occurs after said recipient of the insta-love, Jeff, has been sexually assaulted & thrown off a bridge by the school’s QB, Fox)
"I yelled. I didn’t mean to, but there was a mess of pissed off inside I just couldn’t control."
*So considerate of you to yell at the victim of a crime.
This asshat’s also got some sort of weird animal obsession. He describes people & things as animals constantly. Keeps referring to Jeff as a “twitchy little rabbit” & then keeps referring to his cock as a dragon. *wails*
“The movement of his ass was waking the dragon big time.” “Anything to quiet the dragon.” “The dragon roared to life.” “And the dragon wept with joy.”
*pleads* I love dragons & you’re ruining them for me. Please stop. I’m begging you.
Jeff… I don’t even know what to say. Two seconds into their *coughs* relationship *coughs* he tells Sam his father used to beat him, cries the first time they kiss, has a tendency to lock himself into places or run away at the first sign of confrontation yet somehow turns on a dime into ÜBER bossy, toppy dude. Did not compute. Oh & less than 24 hours after he’s attacked he shows up at Sam’s dorm room with a bottle of lube, a box of condoms & a candle & proceeds to put on a striptease, push Sam down on the bed, undress him, rim him then looks up & says this, “I’m gonna fuck the living shit out of you Samuel Richards.” Did I mention he was a virgin? Did I mention they met the day before? Did I mention that he was forced to fellate the QB of the football team who subsequently threw him off a bridge when he was “done with him”? Did I happen to mention all that happened the day before this little sexcapade? The good news is he moved out of “rabbit” territory & moved into “tiger” territory afterwards. Congratulations, Jeff.
The third & final piece of this triumvirate, Reed, is also a douche. He & Sam have been best friends since they were kids & are roommates at Sterling. Naturally, Sam’s had a crush on him since he was 12 or so but Reed is straight. Or so he says. He’s got a weird, quasi homoerotic relationship with Fox & Sam. He seems possessive of Sam & jealous of Jeff yet tries to set Sam up with Fox, who’s apparently gay or bi. Reed spends most of his time in Fox’s back pocket, who we find out drugged & fellated Reed which, coincidentally, was his first gay experience yet somehow he takes this in stride. During the whole day or two he's been at Sterling, he’s sort of dating the dorm’s RA, Jacklyn. He asks her to go with him to dinner with Fox, Sam & a whole boat load of other people to a restaurant that caters to gay men but ignores her the entire time then chases after her when she gets out of the car without a word to anyone? Just a bunch of weirdness. None of which made a lick of sense.
They all did things that I found asinine. I often wanted to do them bodily harm. The dialogue was just bad. I’ve said before that I’m no expert in English but I’m pretty sure the quality here is sub-par. It’s not at all engaging. It’s not even in the "it's so bad, it’s good" category. In a nutshell, my cup of care was so empty with these people, it cracked.
I really like Sam’s voice in this story, he’s fresh and bratty and fun. I like the author's clear, clean writing, avoiding many of the cliche’s so often found in this genre. This is not about a menage. This is a story about family and friendship and how important that is when one is away from home for the first time. Sam and Reed are already childhood BFF’s and they welcome Jeff into their friendship too. The guys learn a lot about life in their first week of college. I’ll definitely be looking for more work from this author.
I uh didn't really like this one =/ It might've been me, but I just felt it was all way too much that happened in 2 days. There were too many characters, and I felt the events were kind of vague. I don't understand how anyone could fall in love with someone else in one day. This story made me think of a Chinese firecracker...background-character-character-event-event-character-character-character-event-event-character-event....and then in the end BOOMmajoreventcharacterbreakdownlovehappyendingDONE! I'm glad the author decided to write prequels because that might actually help me get to know the other characters and not feel like the were fired at me out of nowhere, one after the other.
3.5 stars There was a lot going on here and it got a bit muddled, but I was surprised in the direction the story went. I did love the interactions between Sam and Jeff though.
I realize that I'm in the minority by awarding this book 5 stars. Now, to be fair, the book had some issues and got off to a rocky start for me. The high rating did not come easily and was not a foregone conclusion until the last 20% of the book.
First of all, this book is not a menage read. I just want to put that out there so that readers know that up front & won't expect that relationship dynamic to come up at any point in the story. It has several menage tags and those tags are erroneous. The title is a bit misleading...that combined with the tags set me up with the expectation of an M/M/M sexual relationship. It was actually one of the main reasons I selected this book. I would have been disappointed had I not wound up loving the book so much.
The MCs are far from ideal. There is insta-love, perplexing reactions, ridiculous behaviors and insipid dialogue between the characters, especially at the beginning...and I judged and rolled my eyes accordingly. However, when I think back to my first week of college and my perceptions of everyone around me, it was pretty spot on... impulsive behavior, love at first sight, over the top PDAs, stupid comments, posturing males and delusions of immortality were everywhere...it was what made my first week of college exciting, scary, sexy, funny, frustrating and disturbing.
My 5 Star rating comes down to one vital element of this story: Jeff. I feel very strongly that Jeff is a critically important figure both inside and outside of this story. Jeff is a young gay man who was perpetually battered, tormented and ostracized because of his sexual orientation. He has spent his life suffering in quiet shame at the hands of family, peers and society. Human cruelty was so commonplace for him that it was far easier for him to accept the reality of hostility than the unfamiliarity of kindness or love. Because he suffers in silence, he is at a high risk for suicide, violent crime, sexual abuse & exploitation. He also runs the risk of being overlooked entirely...never experiencing trust, love or acceptance with another human being, himself included.
In this story, things change for Jeff. He is not overlooked. He matters. He is important. He is validated. He has a profound impact on those whose lives he touches. He is cherished & celebrated. For the first time in his life, he actually gets to live.
At one point in the book, Jeff went missing. My reaction was swift and severe. I froze momentarily. I stopped breathing and it felt like my heart stopped beating. I felt so unsettled...sick to my stomach with a growing sense of dread. That's when I realized how much Jeff meant to me...and how grateful I was that I wasn't the only one. Those silly, irritating boys became beautiful heroes to me in that moment and that hasn't changed.
LHNB- 23,569 2 star read for me. (Although I do appreciate the author taking his time to write this. It just didn't work for me.)
What in the heck did I just read?? I'm sitting here trying to think back. I literally just finished this book. So I'll say the first thing that comes to mind.
Wait for it. WHAT-THE-HECK?? Yup. That's it.
Way way way too much going on. What was up with all the gay uncles!?? There was like a trope of them hanging around with these college freshmen.
Jeff, oh Jeff. So mentally unstable. But then Sammy isn't the sharpest tool either. Why in the heck is this tagged ménage??
Hard to categorise this because its quite quirky but I like quirky so I found myself quite taken with it even though its completely different to what I expected. There are a lot of characters to take on board and at the end there are a few threads that felt like they'd been left unfinished but despite that I really, really enjoyed it. It seems that theres another Bennett bay short story by Stephen del Mar, will definitely check it out. Another enjoyable LHNB freebie. Nice.
A lot of secondary characters and back story for a short story, and it went in a different direction than I expected, but I really enjoyed it. Sam was a fun character and his interactions with Jeff were entertaining.
I think I must agree with some of the other reviewers about this shortish M/M novella.
There is a good story in here but the author simply crams too many events and too many characters into it. I get it that his point was exactly this, describing the frenzied first days of college for Sam, but if the timeline could have been the same, with the plot forced into a couple of days, then at least the number of pages should have been increased.
The pages being as few as they are, all characters except Sam are not as well rounded as they could which is a pity as every single one among them is very interesting in his general characterization and has great potential. Sam as a character is a bit problematic as well. Mr del Mar really overdoes his insecurities and his behaviour is often grotesque. I think his intention was to portray a confused, insecure, clumsy young man but once again he allows himself too few pages to do that and in the first half Sam really looks like a pervy jerk while in the second half he is constantly over the top.
As far as the matchmaking is concerned I have no real preference, couples, threesomes, foursomes, but I think it would have been nicer to see the five youths (Sam, Reed, Jeff, Randy AND Jacklyn) together as people on their way to become close and fast friends while the actual ending is rather vague.
Well, I am for one happy there wasn't a ménage. It would have totally ruined it for me. No questions asked. I must say I really didn't like Reed until the very end and he then grew on me a little. But throughout most of it I felt he was a selfish jackass who didn't deserve to be called a friend, let alone best, of Sammy. I felt so bad for Sam, having a crush on Reed all that time and Reed treated him in that manner. I am happy though, that Sam met someone.
I thought it was pretty fast pace for Sam and Jeff, but at least Sam mentioned it and how he didn't know how to deal with it. I like Jeff a lot. Poor guy had to suffer. Luckily, he met Sam. And hopefully, Fox will get what he deserves. He deserves much more than what Randy and Reed did to him.
One thing that irked me also was referring to 'acting like a girl'. It rubbed me the wrong way. Like all girls/women act that way over someone. Which, is not true. But overall, really enjoyed it.
I really enjoyed this story, I just had some issues - which are very common for me with short stories.
As others have stated, there was just too much storyline for such a short story. It had a lot of room for character development, rather than just background info thrown out as information.
Jeff was such a sweet guy and I would have loved to have more of a romance - especially for his first time. Then to just throw in a rape, didn't make sense. All of this happened in a week.
One of my favorite scenes was when Jeff was sitting on Sam's lap in the back seat of Fox's car. ;-)
I'm not sure what I'm thinking about this one. It's a very complex story and while I appreciate this very much I think compressing it into a week and a short story didn't do the story justice. It was difficult with so many different characters introduced in a very short time frame, there were some time leaps I would have rather liked to be filled and the sudden falling in love didn't feel real. I also couldn't feel the spark between sam and Jeff, no chemistry for me there, there was more between Sam and Reed. Nevertheless it was entertaining and I appreciated as well, that it didn't turn into a threesome like the picture might suggest.
Short story about Chris, his best het friend Reed and their first week at college. Chris wants Reed, but then meets Jeff and falls head over heels. Story should come with trigger warnings as it includes mentions of forced fellatio and attempted murder.
Told entirely from Chris' POV, it captures the male teenager's voice very well, including the confusion and angst as well as the stresses of starting out at college. With the help of a bunch of supporting cast members, Chris does get his HFN.

... Why is it so short? T.T This story deserves to be longgggggg xD Hahahahaha, but seriously, LOVE this! I was all like internally kicking Reed for not noticing Sam but when Jeff entered i was all messed up because i don't know which to pick >_< I thought it'll be a threesome but am glad it's not xD And when Randy got in i thought he might be the third guy not Reed *O* Well, to summarize, this story made me all messed up xD And now, i'm just hoping that Reed and Randy will hook up >:D Mwuehehehehe. Thank you!!
3.5 stars. I like the writing, characters, and story. The reasons I didn't give it a solid 4 stars are (1) confusion over Jacklyn's role, (2) can't figure out if Reed is really straight or if he's bi, (3) sometimes I felt like I was in information/character overload and sometimes I felt details or explanations were too vague. All in all this book a good and info-packed introduction to what I hope will be a long and wonderful series.
The fast pace of this story certainly kept me reading to the end. The school atmosphere was fun--and I thought I had gone to a party school!--until the story took a grim turn. No spoilers here, though. With so many characters and so much going on, I would really love to see an expanded version of this story.
LHNB story released 13.6.13 Interesting story about a group of college students at the start of an academic year. I got a little confused by the sheer number of characters outside of the main trio, the potential girlfriend and the villain of the piece, but it all turned out well in the end.
