4 stars for this collection of Texas true crime stories. 17 short Retellings of desperate people making insanely stupid decisions with disaster out results. -a satanic ritual killing brought on by drug lord/gang wars was the result for an unfortunate young college student who was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Tragic, grueling & unnecessary. -a less then stellar religious person who thought of himself as mightier then the Lord he served/represented & in his “rise to fame” tried taking out his wife with no punishment awarded(extremely disappointing). -a vindictive jealous woman who failed to live up to her own dreams, pushes said dreams onto her daughter & results in forcing her hand to take out a hit on her daughters competition. A disgusting display of how the law failed to punish. -a man, with a bizarre upbringing and a short dark temper who reminds us of a certain fictional horror character(Norman Bates) & the freaky crimes he committed. -a Romeo & Juliet relationship with an unusual dark twist that is still hard to comprehend as to why even the guilty thought it was necessary but does result in dual life sentences. These are just some of the stories that fill these pages; some have already been made into tv/movies. They all showcase disturbing people in horrible situations who definitely could’ve made better choices. Religion, small towns, good vs bad upbringing, doesn’t seem to matter, true crime affects us all. A great read if your not from Texas & want to know the darker side of The Lone Star’s history.
True Texas crimes, perpetrated by true Texans, written by true Texans, about said true Texas criminals, for the Texas Monthly. Sort of interesting. Sort of depressing. But then I'm not a Texan. Nor do I live in Texas. So, well, uh, yeah.
There is no end to the variety of crimes and this book covers a lot of "em. A good read for true crime buffs although it's a little dated with crimes from the 60's to the 90's.
