Well I made it to page 50...but it was putting me to sleep. The plot had potential to be interesting but it was just taking too long to get there. Plus between the over the top narrative and the absurd dialogue it was just difficult to read. DNF

Raphael Jones was born from sin and believed he was destined to live a life predetermined by his conception. After his mother dies of consumption, he has no buffer to help guard him against the scorn and shame of Jedidiah Jones, the man to whom his mother had been married when she conceived Rafe during an affair with a traveling performer. He flees his Kentucky home and stumbles upon a troupe of performers and swindlers. With them, he finds a home and hones his charm and acting abilities -- skills which would later allow him to become a confidence man wanted in several states. It is during one such attempt that he encounters Silver Nichols, the daughter, heir, and (some would argue) the brains behind S & M Nichols Mining.

Silver believes her father, a humble and worldly minor with a jovial disposition, has fallen prey to a confidence woman out to marry him for his money and do him in to inherit a sizable portion of their flourishing enterprise. What does her father see in the woman with her odd manner of dress and penchant for speaking to spirits? Silver fears for her father's life and the wellbeing of their business when Celestia tries convincing everyone that the spirit of an old Native American shaman is haunting the mines in an effort to conceal a great treasure. Unfortunately, her father's trusting nature refuses to see reason. How can she possibly convince him to see Celestia's true colors?

Silver encounters Rafe while he is in disguise infiltrating an important meeting of mining magnates. She is the only one who can see past the fabricated story and false appearance. Despite her better judgement, Silver decides not to turn Rafe and his accomplice over to the authorities; instead, she comes up with a rather interesting proposition. She will hire this confidence man to seduce her prospective step-mother and reveal to all what a sham the woman is. It could break her father's heart, but it's a small price to pay for saving his life and their hard-fought business. She believes the plan to have some merit...until she sees Rafe without all of his stage makeup and realizes that he's far younger, far more cunning, far more talented, and far more dangerous than she'd first suspected.

The danger Silver and Rafe present to one another's hearts isn't the only obstacle they face. There is a much more sinister villain lurking among them, and it could mean the end for them both.

Adrienne deWolfe is a new author for me and I was pleasantly surprised with this book. I don't typically read books set in America, let alone those set out West in a mining town, but this one was enjoyable for being outside of my normal range. By far, the greatest success in this book was Rafe. He was multifaceted with a complex nature and backstory. His flair and sense of humor were well-crafted and charming. It was impossible not to fall for him. Watching his character grow and change was a highlight to this story. His struggle to reconcile the demons of his past with the present and the future he dared not dream of was realistic and poignant. Octavia (Tavy) was another gem as a secondary character. I won't give away too much, but her antics brought a wonderful amount of unexpected levity rather than the silliness I was expecting. The same goes for Silver's father, Max. He was sweet and quirky, which made it easy to see why Silver adored him so much. Meanwhile, Silver was an intelligent, well-rounded female lead with secrets of her own. She was strong and brave, witty and well-spoken. She could hold her own against Rafe's wit and charm and his silver tongue. Had she been any weaker, then I don't believe she would have presented such a good foil to Rafe's very strong personality. Though I didn't love her as much as I loved Rafe, she was well-crafted and held her own fairly well.

There was some unexpected supernatural happenings in this story which lent a mysterious air to the plot. I normally prefer books to either stay firmly in the "realistic" or "supernatural" camp, but I didn't mind it all that much here.

Overall, I found a great amount of enjoyment in this book. The back and forth between Silver and Rafe presented a lot of entertainment. The writing style flowed well and it was mostly an easy read. I will say that the romance wasn't as "open bedroom" as some of the others in this genre, but I didn't find it to be too big of a deal. The passion between Rafe and Silver was still steamy and palpable.

I recommend this book and definitely look forward to reading the others in this series.

Wow! A Kindle Freebie I've really enjoyed! That hasn't happened in a while.
I've been sitting on this book since 2015, and finally read it.
The heroine Silver takes a bit of warming up to, but certainly becomes likeable along the way (yay, character growth!) Rafe is immediately a bit swoon-worthy AND hilarious in his terrible ruse as Chumley. Interesting side characters and - bonus: an adorable pet baby otter, Octavia (Tavy) who steals lots of scenes.

Scoundrel for Hire

Everything was crammed into this book. Silver-mining in 1800's Aspen, ghosts, treasure, con-men, bad men and love. An entertaining read that kept me interested to the end.

This was a delightful historical romance!

Rafe and Silver are both wonderfully-written characters, intelligent and charming with a slice of mischief. The story was so much fun to read, and I thoroughly enjoyed the HEA.

Ms. deWolfe has created an entertaining series starter that brings together two apparently different people under the guise of a scam that doesn't go as planned. When emotions get in the way and the past comes back to haunt them their burgeoning relationship might be over before it starts in this historical read populated by colorful characters and flashes of the supernatural.

Rafe grew up as a constant reminder of his mother's shame. His religiously over zealous father constantly belittled and damned him trying to taint his siblings against him, thus making him feel alone and worthless. After setting off at an early age to make a living for himself he stumbled across a group of talented actors/grifters who taught him a way of living but enforced his feelings of loneliness as they used any display of care and compassion against him. It's hardened his heart making him doubt faith and love and all these betrayals he endured made me ache for him. There are still flashes of his caring nature as seen in the affection he shows a homeless otter (and which results in some humorous and sweet moments) and in his dealings with Silver which opens his heart even further as he sees an unexpected connection between them. He's a charming fellow who still feels indebted to a small group he calls family even after being hurt time and again. He finds it easy to open up to Silver though and is protective of her and willing to sacrifice himself once he realizes what she means to him. Theirs is a relationship that started off as adversaries but quickly evolved into a playful and flirty friendship that morphed into a deep and abiding love that gave both of them someone to count on.

Silver lost her mother at an early age too and has had no one to comfort her as her father's a fanciful sort with his head in the clouds. He's a dreamer and she's the thinker who's kept their business flourishing. She's strong-willed but wary of men and love after being brutally betrayed by a despicable and dishonorable man of wealth whose painful shadow still haunts her. With her father's upcoming nuptials she formulates a plan using Rafe to stop it as she doubts the sincerity of the oddly prophetic woman. There's also a bit of jealousy involved that she's no longer the apple of her father's eye that she'll never admit. I felt sympathetic for all Silver's gone through that has turned her into a brittle and untrusting woman. Rafe brings a smile to her face and makes her feel like a woman with the sensual feelings he engenders in her. They're a delightful couple with their mutually scheming ways and the guilt they both feel regarding their actions. Their mutual loneliness binds them together and keeps them fighting for their HEA in the face of death.

The premise of this story is a uniquely entertaining one that nicely blends building sexual tension amidst a battle of wills. Their scenes together sizzle in the rapid-fire dialogue and underlying sensuality and had me looking forward to each time they were alone. Rafe and Silver really want nothing more than to be happy. At first they're willing to sacrifice others to reach that goal but their innate goodness wins out which puts their lives in jeopardy in a heart-pounding and fast-paced conclusion where the past comes back to take their happiness before it's barely begun. The secondary characters are a distinctive group where not everyone does what's right but in the end they come together to assure a HEA. There's unexpected twists and turns that add a bit of mystery and suspense as well as a bit of the paranormal permeating the storyline that felt a bit out of place at times but certainly made for memorable moments. After an exhilarating start the middle section felt a bit draggy but once evil reared its ugly head the roller-coaster storyline sped to a unique and satisfying conclusion that has me wanting to read the other books in this series. I applaud Ms. deWolfe's talent in redeeming this drool-worthy slightly tarnished bad boy and look forward to the next hero she creates.

Predictable, but still fun. Silver is the daughter of a millionaire miner. Rafe is a conman & actor. She hires him to play an English nobleman in order to charm her father's fiancee and prevent their wedding. You guessed it, they fall in love, there is danger and more.

I’ve only just started reading historical romance novels, so really don’t have much to compare to. As I tend to prefer urban fantasy and paranormal romance where the plots are fast paced and the romance is secondary – I really read Scoundrel for Hire with an open mind and was pleasantly surprised by this western romance that still had a few paranormal touches in.

The pace was steady and there were enough twists and turns to keep you wanting to read more. It was humorous and the main characters, although falling into the traditional romance troupes, were witty and compelling. The whole plot kind of felt like a Shakespearean comedy, which was something that drew me in even further.

From a writer’s perspective the prose was flawless and the book neatly drew you from A to B without pressure or boredom. The whole story takes place in quite a short time frame and I think that that aided in its reading ease.

The front cover is a little cheesy for my taste – however looking at the likes of Mills & Boon covers, this is the norm. If I were looking for a book onlin

e or in a bookshop, I’d have passed this one over on the weakness of the front cover – and I would have missed a literary treat!

Overall I’d give Scoundrel for Hire 4 out of 5 stars and recommend to any historical romance reader with a bit of spare time on their hands.

Okay I admit I wanted to read this book because Rafe is from Kentucky. Being that Kentucky is my home state I am partial to books with this location. I am proud to admit being a Kentucky Hillybilly sitting on my front porch with some nice smooth moonshine J

This was not my first time reading this book. I read it before in paperback. It was honestly just as good this time around as it was the first time. I really did not see much of the paranormal elements in the book. Maybe it is just me but I could not see it. I do not put a child seeing angels as paranormal.

This book took me on a trip back to the 1860’s in Kentucky then to 1870’s Colorado. I felt transported back to the untamed lands while our country was still new and budding.

With a swift hand and unique way with words deWolfe created a story that captivates readers.

Thanks for a great read.

The bunnies and I give this book 4 carrots carrots.

The first book in the Velvet Lies series and a reread for me, although I first read the book many many years ago and remembered very little from that read other than that I enjoyed the book.

I think the intervening years changed my opinion somewhat, although I still enjoyed the book overall. I thought there was some good witty dialogue in there, and Rafe was very likeable. I had a bit of trouble warming to Silver, and found some of the stuff towards the end of the book overly melodramatic.

Overall it was an enjoyable read that didn’t fully hold my attention, but I did want to finish it. I’m not sure if I’ll continue on with the rest of the series, but I’m not ruling it out either.

A hero you can love!

From the first page, your heart will break for Raphael. He's a boy in an untenable position, whose only option on Christmas Day, is to head out on his own. For the next 15 years, he does whatever it takes to get by, which mostly involves being a con artist.

It's in this role that he meets our heroine, Silver. The oh-so-proper miss doesn't turn him in; instead, she hires him to pull a con.

But who's conning who? In a classic slapstick style, everyone has a secret agenda.
Throw in an entertaining cast of characters, including a ghost, an evil ex, and an otter pup, and you're in for one heck of a ride.

I wanted a fun, fluffy romance novel for my holiday weekend trip to the shore and thought this would fit the bill. While it was an interesting read and parts of it were really good, it wasn't quite what I was looking for. It starts off very slowly and not much happens until almost halfway through the book, and then the end seemed rushed to me. While it's a fun book, I wouldn't pick it up again. Luckily it's a self-contained story because I'm not going to continue with the series.

It's probably going to take forever for me to read this book. So far I'm only at the prolouge but it's pretty boring. His stepfather and older stepbrother are very angry people and the religious/paranormal angle is tired and strange. I'll give it a good try but I'm definitely yawning already. Romance novels shouldn't produce that effect.

Cute story and great beach read. I got this book as a Friday Free nook book and read it in Hawaii. It dragged in a few places, but not enough to make me quit reading. I can't stand paranormal romance, but the author worked the spirit angle into the story well. I would read another book by this author....

I really enjoyed all of the twists and turns of this story as well as the development of the characters. I like when a romance is more about the emotional and mental connection of the characters and how both Rafe and Silver had issues from their past to work through and how they found balance in each other. An enjoyable read.

Fun filled frolic think the Unsinkable Molly Brown

Western tale of rich miners daughter, con man, baby otter, etc. This rich well-written tale with a variety of villains and cleverly designed characterization will keep you mesmerized through the whole book. Adult reader due to violence and sexual content.

Adrienne DeWolfe did a good job using language of the period. I looked up so many words that have been forgotten in our language of today. This was a really good read.

It took me a while to get into it (at first). However once I delved into it the male protagonist (Rafe) was actually very unique and the love story was pretty deep. If you like Western Romances, Adrienne deWolfe is pretty reliable.
