The first couple of years for new public high school teachers can be very difficult, andtoo often, these teachers get discouraged, feel unsupported, and leave teaching early to pursue other careers. I am here to tell you that it doesn’t have to be this way! The beginning public high school teacher, whether a college graduate fresh from the student teaching experience or someone from another field making a lateral entry into education, will have questions and challenges galore during the first year or two of teaching. With fewer and fewer people nationwide entering the education field, and more and more leaving after just a short teaching stint, it’s important now more than ever that new teachers receive all the support they can get. When my nephew recently decided to become a high school English teacher, I decided to use my years of experience in the classroom to aid him in successfully navigating his student teaching experience and especially his first couple of years in the classroom. He was enthusiastic about his prospective career in education, and I wantedhim to maintain that enthusiasm! Well, what originally began as a list of teaching tips formy nephew, quickly morphed into a handbook in which I tried to include everything I could think of that would support my nephew and all other first and second year public high school teachers and prepare them for the classroom and the schoolhouse. I wanted new teachers to have an easy-to-read guide that they could go through before entering the classroom and then utilize as a reference whenever needed throughout the school year. You see, when it comes to teaching in a public high school, the more you know what to expect and the more prepared you are, the more successful and comfortable you’ll be starting your career as an educator. This country needs new teachers to be successful, supported, and comfortable in the classroom and happy with their career choice - we need good teachers who are in it for the long haul. So, enjoy the handbook - read it, highlight the points you especially like, make annotations in it - and let it help guide you to a more enjoyable and successful beginning as a high school teacher! Preparation is key!
