The summer of 1920 brings illicit liaisons to stately home Deverell Hall. Lords, ladies, butler and maids all succumb to the spirit of the roaring 1920s as sex and scandal take over.
From the author of bestselling Mischief titles ‘Kinky’ and ‘Game’, Justine Elyot’s ‘Secrets and Lords’ is a historical erotic novel that will seduce anyone who loves period drama Downton Abbey and delight fans of The Great Gatsby.
Lord Deverell's new wife has the house in thrall to her theatrical glamour. His womanising son, Sir Charles, has his eye on anything female that moves while his beautiful daughter, Mary, is feeling more than a little restless. And why does his younger son, Sir Thomas, spend so much time in the company of the second footman?
Into this simmering tension comes new parlour maid, Edie, with a secret of her own – a secret that could blow the Deverell family dynamic to smithereens.
I am Justine Elyot. I love to write erotica and erotic romance. Elements you are likely to find in my work include: moustachioed melodrama villains, whips, wisecracks, knights in tarnished armour, damsels under duress, lovers, leather, aquiline features, references to popular songs. I massively overuse qualifiers like ‘really’, ‘quite’, ‘actually’ etc. and can’t resist the temptation to substitute long words for ‘said’. Reviewers either rave or cringe, with very little middle reactive ground (insert Marmite cliche here). Which will you do?
I liked this book it as was cute, humorous, steamy, captivating and full of secrets til the end and some of them you have no clue are going to happen. Some of the secrets come out early in the book and you can figure out the main secret and then there are a stream of them through out all the way to the end of the book. Edie is naive and Charles a rogue and they make a very cute couple.
Set in the 20's during a time of great change in the world where the rights of women are concerned Secrets and Lords is the story of Edie and her discovery of a deep dark secret as well as her discovery of herself as a sexual being.
Ms. Elyot has many twist and turns in the action taking place all around and with Edie between her secret reason to become a chamber maid to her secret lust for Sir Charles we are taken on a maze of plot twists, unexpected revelations and more secrets by other members of the household as well. We come to find out that just about everyone at Deverell Hall is keeping a secret and living a life apart from what they present to the world.
Secrets and Lords has some pretty steamy scenes that even include a little bedroom play BDSM, very light bondage. I like that the secondary characters in the story had their own scandals to hide from it added some depth to the story. Being set in the 20's as opposed to the regency era allows for more freedoms for the characters and the story.
This was an enjoyable read, with interesting characters and a surprise ending.
I received this book in exchange for my honest review.
Deverell Hall is the setting for this erotic historical novel set in the summer of 1920's, secrets and lies surround the people living here and gossip if rife amongst the staff. Lord Deverell has a beautiful new wife considerably younger then himself so why does he spend so much time away and while he's away what are those noises coming from Lady Deverell's room, Charles the eldest son is a womaniser and got one of the parlor maids pregnant and deserted her, or did he and exactly what's going on with the second son Thomas. Into this enters Edie the new parlor maid who is not what she seems but why exactly is she here, we follow Edie as she settles into life in the big house and the secrets are revealed.
I gave this three stars because while I did enjoy it overall I felt it dragged in places and Edie was so naive at times, unbelievablely stupidly so. Also I wasn't totally happy with several bits towards the end, some things seemed rushed whereas other bits could have been explained and expanded upon, like so many books these days I felt it could have been so much better but it's free and if you like historical romances with added spice then this is worth a read.
If you think of this book as Downton Abbey with added spice you won't be far wrong. The story is told from the perspective of Edie, the new parlour maid with suspiciously little skill and hands that have clearly never seen a day's work - so why is she there? Deverell Hall is a house full of secrets, both above and below stairs, and the story is full of twists and turns that I didn't see coming. Edie is a likeable heroine, she is naive yet brave and determined. And as for Sir Charles.. safe to say that I'd be powerless to resist his charms! This is a quick read that I enjoyed. Love the cover too! 4/5 stars.
Written with fans of Downtown Abbey in mind no doubt, a quick read with lots of "upstairs-downstairs" secrets. A likeable heroine loses her heart to the bad boy Lord... with a few twists for good measure.
Such a great read! There was so much going on, it was a million different genres in one. OK, exaggeration, but there was deceiver, detective, playboy, innocence ..to name but a few. The story line was excellent, the setting and descriptive and well written. A great read.
This novel was an interesting premise but wasn't as well executed as you would hope. I felt that there were so many aspects that could have really been developed, but were forgotten, while repititious aspects were over-written.
