CHARACTERS-
The characters are so so good. They are so different and you can see their development in each book that you read and they are written so well and I love them with all my heart.

ROMANCE-
So this isn't a love triangle yet but you can feel it coming on and it's defiantly going to get more intense.

PLOT-
The plot was super fast paced and enjoyable but I missed Carden through the majority of this book.

ENDING-
The ending was so good and I can't wait to read the next book which is told from Ronan's point of view, which will be interesting.

After finishing a book with a cliffhanger yesterday, I really didn't need to finish another one with a big cliffhanger. And, just like the other book, no news about the next in the series. Seriously, these authors are trying to have me locked in an asylum. Okay, drama aside, I enjoyed this book. I'll not say I liked this one as much as I did the other ones in the series, but it was still a nice read.

Life on the island is more dangerous than ever, now that Drew is realtively isolated from the other girls. But what frustrates me is that this danger is routine in this series (after all, the game played here is kill or be killed), but the real action, the real danger, only happens in the final quarter of the book. And, in this case, a bomb is dropped on the reader on the very last line.

I loved the scenes with Carden (sorry Ronan, but the guy is Scottish!), but he can sure be cryptic when he wants. And I'm not sure yet about his bond with Drew. Maybe this series brings out my paranoid side, but after all we've seen (especially in the end of this one), vampires are creepy as heck. And they're still the bad guys, mostly. I liked seeing a little bit more into their lives, but now my curiosity is really piqued...

The story keeps getting more intricate & complicated. I know other reviewers have mentioned how annoying Drew is but she is still such a realistic character that isn't always strong or smart but she always tries. I think she is a pretty accurate representation of a girl her age. She can be irritating but most of the time you just really sympathize with her. However, I did feel like the repetitive attacks on her got kind of old and would have liked something new or different. I would also like to see more character development because it seems like most of them have remained kind of static, except for Yasuo. Love the triangle that is playing out between her and Carden and Ronan but I like her relationship with Carden too much to want to see it end. I didn't like that there wasn't enough Carden. And the end was such a cliffhanger. Can't wait for the next one. Keep them coming!

So frustrating! All of the interesting developments happened in the final 30-40 pages. Most of the book was romance stuff and angst caused by insecurity and miscommunication. (It doesn't help that I'm not a fan of her love interest.) There were some exciting bits throughout the book, but they seemed repetitive, and the clues that were sprinkled throughout were too obvious, so I wasn't super surprised by the ending. I would have written off this series, but the final pages added to the whole mythology and set up some interesting story lines. Hence my frustration. *exasperated sigh*

Review on: Katy's Readings Blog

If i compared this book to the previous ones it would be bad. It just seems like it's dragging the story and five chapters could easily be put into one. And besides, aside some repetitive attacks from the boys there was no action at all and it seemed like it was more focused on the romance part with Carden and Ronan.

I needed to stay alert. One of these days, there just might be a real blade and it would be aimed at my back.

Drew is starting to piss me off. She did not grew up or evolved from the girl in the first book and is starting to feel like one of those characters you know you'l grow tired of reading about. This is the fourth book and barely nothing happened with her, yes, she has more fighting skills and yes, the character is funny sometimes. But she whines and whines and whines again and all she can say is "Why me?" or "It's all my fault". It's annoying. Though i have good things to say about her as well, she is strong and determined and a survivor at heart, but only the people who have read the four books will understand that!

Ronan and Carden. Ronan you are an idiot if you think you like her only as a sister! But i have to say that when Ronan protects and takes care of Drew is quite sweet. Carden you are also an idiot if you think you can hide your way trough the story and only come up when jealousy strikes you! But his accent is delicious!.

In our time together, I’d known Ronan to steal my nerves. My will. But Carden. He stole my breath.

description

There was something I liked though which was all the things going on with Yasuo ( he is an evil bastard now and I like him even more).
Also, all the boys in that school are perverts right? I mean half of the book is them trying to get into Drew's pants. Just saying.

Overall there is not much to say other than I did not enjoyed this book like the others, it was to slow and with nothing overly special going on. But there is hope for the next one. (:

WAIT, STOP! This review contains spoilers from earlier in the series. You have been warned.

In the fourth book in The Watcher's series, we find Annelise still at school in her second year, now ranked "Initiate." The training is tough, but her relationships with others are often tougher. Many still won't forgive her for her friend Emma's brutal death, but when Annelise discovers there's a chance Emma survive, she hatches a plan to find a way into the castle. Of course, on top of that is her school assignment to kill a fellow classmate.

Holy moley guacamole, The Keep was an intense novel! I was on the edge of my proverbial seat the entire time, whether I was fanning myself reading about Annelise's relationship with Carden, or her discovery that Emma might still be alive, or her school assignment to kill a boy. Yes, you read that right - that's an intense school assignment. Given all the students that were instructed to complete that task, I mean, whoa, that's gonna cut down the graduation rate. But the fact that Emma might still be alive: that's what I was really interested in and Annelise's plan to storm the castle, come head to head with some evil vampires, and rescue her friend. Except...

Much of the plot revolved around Annelise's training and her dreaded school assignment. They were all interesting, but... in the back of my mind I was thinking, "What about Emma!" If you know your best friend might still be alive, why are you going to class like a normal person, when you could be storming the castle, right now?!? Maybe I was a little frustrated with the pace of the novel, even though it was an edge-of-your-seat kind of read.

So finally what I thought was going to be the basis of the novel started happening towards the end and then suddenly... there were no pages left to read. Wait, what just happened? Some really big things were not resolved! The press release I received with the book says this is the "fourth and final" book in the series. Final? Surely that can't be right. I sincerely suspect and hope that press release was wrong.

Four stars! If you're already a fan of the series, you're definitely going to want to continue on. But if you're new to The Watchers, I recommend picking it up and starting it. It's an intense take on YA vampire lore that's sure to thrill.

The Isle of Night is an island run by vampires, where young men and women who are failing out of life, can find themselves. The women will train to become Watchers to the vampires, while the men are vampires in training. Life on the island is a constant fight for survival, as only the best of the best will survive.

Having grown up with an abusive father, Annelise Drew finally has a chance to leave home. But unfortunately, she comes across the handsome and enigmatic Ronan, who convinces her to board the private jet, headed for the deadly island.

But Annelise has been there over a year now and made it to the next level, but it's getting even more dangerous.

I'm loving this series and was glad to discover yesterday that there's to be more books in this series. I'm so not ready for it to end yet.

I love the characters. Annelise is definitely kick butt, otherwise she wouldn't have survived so far. She had a few annoying moments in the beginning, but that's worked itself out. Ronan the Tracer is amazing! Carden the vampire is HOT! Alcantara is the vampire you want to stake, badly. And there's mystery and suspense around every corner. An excellent story.

A must read for those who enjoy a good vampire read...

I just love this series. I really do. It’s not too often I come across a set of books that end up being like crack. But The Watchers is one of those few series for me and I legit can’t get enough of it. Mainly because it’s pretty brutal and Drew’s kind of a BAMF and doesn’t take any crap.

One of two things I didn’t like about THE KEEP is that the plot is largely unresolved at the end. You find out one little tidbit about what’s happening but bag’s open, cats are everywhere and they’re pissed the eff off. Not a fan of ending books that way. Especially since I know it’s taken me forever to read these books and this one’s three years old. And I know, based on the last time I looked on Goodreads, there was only #4.5 in the series about Ronan but no #5. So minor shit fit until I looked again and saw that Wolff’s publishing book 5 herself and won’t leave us all hanging. THANK YOU.

It does make me sad, though, that it looks like NAL didn’t pick up book five but I love living in a world where authors have recourse of this now. No longer do we have to deal with dead, unresolved series. Hello, self-publishing! Yes, please. For book five, though, I mean it could be cut out newspaper letters on multi-colored construction paper. I don’t care. JUST GIVE ME THE WORDS. Please.

Two of two things I didn’t like about THE KEEP was the attacks on Drew by the Trainees got a little redundant. By the end it was like oh, this again? Slap, slap, kick, kick, blood, bruise, go away. I mean I was even picking up aggravation in Drew about this so it seems like the repetition might have been intentional anyway.

Other than that, loved it. Loved Drew just growing into herself as a bad ass human being but I like how Wolff ground it all out in HOW she’s getting to that place in her life. Dead friends, no family, constant threat of death. And it’s wearing on Drew. That much is obvious, and it might even be starting to break her a little bit.

Ronan is Ronan and I like how he’s still puttering around and being all mysterious. I’m not too big of a Carden fan because he hasn’t been all that much use in the story except to be a love interest and get Drew stronger but he disappears for a good portion of THE KEEP. And when he comes back BOOM. He’s back in style. He drops a bomb and then the story ends. Literally. At the back cover. See above re: unresolved story. Grrr.

And I liked where Alcantara’s character went here. It was wholly unexpected and it paints him in an entirely new light. Plus it gives his motives all new meaning as well. Seriously, this book will leave you with more questions than answers but can it be April already so I can gobble this book up like my cat Fat Dean snarfs french fries, please? Thanks!

This is not a typical teen/new adult vampire series and god, do I love it so. There is so much blood and death and guts and life threatening situations with dashes of man chests and eye candy and BAMF lady fights that it’s kind of my perfect series. There needs to be more of this. Like it seriously harkens me back to my teenage years when vampires were VAMPIRES and fangs and all of that. Too much sparkle in the world now. It makes me sad.

Bloody vamps and the Watchers who hate them FTW!

4.5

I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I wish I wouldn’t have read that fast. I’m a bit of a reading glutton – the better the book, the faster and more I read till it goes down the wrong pipe and bam I’m choking (or in this case, I miss important bits).

That might explain my reaction when I finished reading the last sentence of this book. I went forward on my Kindle, and then back, and then forward again. Because either I missed something earlier or there is more in here somewhere. I mean, you’re not even going to explain that cryptic last revelation? I have to wait for the next book for my answers? ... ... ....

This series had the potential to exhibit “Lost” syndrome: you know that TV show about plane crash survivors who get stuck on a crazy-ass island? “Lost syndrome” occurs when the show/book just keeps going and going, giving you question after question and zero answers till a century goes by and you’re still waiting to find out, “what is in that vault?!” or something similar.

But The Keep just turned all my Lost-related doubts around. It takes a fair bit of reading, and watching Annalise think herself in circles (seriously she could ‘think’ someone to death), but we get some answers. Some juicy ones. About the Vampires, what’s inside the Keep...., and other spoilerish things. I wanted to scream “FINALLY!!” one minute “WTH?!” the next because some of the reveals were NOT what I was expecting.

The Keep kind of cemented my interest in this series. I had my doubts in the earlier books about whether to keep reading but now I have to, if only to see what happens between Drew/Carden/Ronan/Alcantara. That’s right, the love quadrangle lives on!

We get to see a new, emotional side of Ronan, the whiff of a truth about Alcantara we never would have guessed, and a totally hot, sexy and totally melting side of Carden. So from the romance angle, a solid thumbs up! Though still no sex.

I can’t ignore 2 things that really bugged me in this book though. First, Annalise and Veronica Wolff are very similar in one way – they are very abrupt. Annalise loves to “change the topic” just as it’s going somewhere interesting and Wolff loves to fade to black right when I think ooh, this’ll be good. It’s not bad; it kind of keeps the book going at a really fast pace; but it is pretty frustrating.

Second, Annalise needs to just turn her brain off and follow her heart. She is wary of trusting anyone, I get it, but Ronan? He is in LOVE with you, stupid girl! Just trust him already. And maybe kiss him while you’re at it...

The Scene

Drew's on an island again doing her own kickass routine. There's lots of training in this one with Ronan to boot. The whole thing with Emma in the previous book, Blood Fever, was dealt with (kinda), thank god, but it was still sad.

The Girl

Oh gosh. Can I just say that I love Drew? She is awesome and so kickass. I love her fight, her snark, and how strong she is. Yeah, she makes some stupid decision sometimes (who doesn't?) but I think that's what makes her a bit realistic, especially for a girl her age. Drew is a huge reason why I love the Watchers series so much.

The Boy(s)

Ronan was in this book so much. And I loved it. Don't get me wrong I like Carden but I've always been more of a Ronan fan. Drew and him just need to hurry up and get together already.

The WTF?!

Ohmygosh, what the hell was up with Yasuo?! I was totally flipping because I really liked him in the previous books. He went all freaking psycho on Drew and it actually made me a little sad. And angry.

The Buzz

I can't even begin to express how much I enjoy the Watchers series and The Keep was no exception. I loved the action, mystery, intrigue, and of course romance that totally kept me captivated.

I just cannot wait for the next book to come out! But, to tide you over (and me) there's a novella out that's in Ronan's POV.

Yes, Ronan's POV.

Sigh... What can I say that I haven't said before about Veronica Wolff's AMAZING "Watchers" series? I adore every single book. There is literally NEVER a dull moment. I'm never bored and if anything I'm always pining for the next book before I've even finished what I'm reading at that moment. I love Acari Drew because she is such an out of the box character from the normal YA characters. She is smart and she knows it! She is snarky and has a potty mouth, and I love every second of (reading) it! Not only can I not wait to read the next book, but I've met Veronica at an event before and let me tell you she is one of the nicest people I've ever met! I've met A LOT of authors, and hardly any ever took the time to actually have conversations with their fans. She talked to me for, like, literally a half hour! I adore her and her series and will always be a fan!

This is the fourth book in the watchers series by Veronica Wolff. And if you haven't started this series yet than you need to run to the nearest bookstore.

Full of danger, passion, and mystery. My only problem is that most of the action doesn't truly start until the last fourth of the book. It leaves you wanting more. So now after reading the keep I am stuck staring at my bookshelf for a year until the next book is released. Complete torture. I want more.

Caution Spoiler:

I can't believe we finally got a glimpse into the dark lives of the vampires. I was Bitting my nails the entire time. I cannot wait to see what is next.

OMG, seriously. Ok first off it you haven't read The Watcher series what are you waiting for, come on go start reading.
Secondly, I'm speechless and I think I've got whiplash because one minute I want her to forget everything and take Ronan. But then I jump back to Carden with his passion and wanting to be near here, bond or no bond.
I'd definitely recommend The Keep heck the whole series. The Keep had me questioning everything about the rock, the vampires and the mystery of the runes. By the end, I was again speechless. All I have to say is, come on to end it like that, Veronica you are going make me insane waiting for the next book. Kudos and I'll take whoever she doesn't pick, haha.

4.5 stars...because I'm invested in this story and want to see it to finish...the first half was more 3.5 stars...the last few revealing chapters were five stars... Over all a good addition to the series.
It leaves me fickle with the choices she will have to make. Who to trust, who to love, how to survive?

I hated the moment my finger swept across my iPad for the next page only to find it my last...and the last paragraph!?! Again I will be stuck waiting, cursing cliffhangers, until I can have the next piece of the puzzle revealed.

I'm truly pissed off. I waited MONTHS for this novel, only to have the end be exciting and the rest be completely boring. I couldn't believe what a yawn the novel truly was. I thought this novel would be awesome but it was overly too predictable. I can only hope that the fifth installment comes out faster and is more amazing that this one.

Review originally posted on my blog: A Book Obsession..

Drew may have survived her first year at Isle of Night, but she is far from safe. Despite her bond and relationship with Carden, a very old, very mysterious vampire, she still isn't satisfied with life on the island. She's determined to have vengeance for her lost friend Emma, who may or may not be alive. All she knows is that Emma was taken to the castle, the one place no human ever returns from. Between warding off attacks left and right and plotting a way to take down the vamps that control her, Drew may have just bitten off more than she can chew. If she isn't careful she'll the next one to never be heard from again.

I love Drew's character, but she also really frustrates me at the same time. She's so strong and despite being tested over and over again, somehow manages to hold onto her humanity, which I find to be incredibly impressive. Yet, she's also incredibly hard headed, especially when it comes to information that she wants. No matter how many others tell her to let something go, she ignores them and put herself and others at great risk in her quests to find the information. I understand not just swallowing what she's told, but a lot of her behavior just sparked me as selfish whenever she would put others, particularly Ronan, in extreme danger due to her stunts. It's one thing to continually risk her own life, but it really bothered me that she kept doing it even though she knew the dangerous position she was putting others in. Honestly, I think if she spent a little more time planning out things, she'd still be able to get her answers, but with much less risk. She truly could be a force to be reckoned with if she just used that brain of hers a little more rather than just reacting.

I absolutely adore the bond between Carden and Drew. It's so sweet and innocent, yet incredibly dangerous at the same time. I really enjoy seeing how it makes the normally tough as nails Drew lose some of her confidence and act like a normal inexperienced girl. Carden, despite being a vampire in a world where it seems like being a vampire means pure evil, seems to genuinely care for Drew above and beyond just what the bond makes him feel. I really loved how he was always so fiercely protective of her and always knew what to do or say to brighten her day. Of course it isn't all roses between them as if their bond were to be discovered, it could be deadly for one or both of them. And of course Carden was rather frustrating at times in his need to protect Drew by shielding information from her. Which really wound up being pointless as she put herself in much more danger as she went out in search of those answers on her own. But it was still fun to see the dance between them as they test the limits of what their bond means for them, and I can only hope that somehow in the future they will find a way to escape together.

I've said this before in a previous review, but it bears repeating. As much as I enjoy this series, the lack of real momentum in the series. Don't get me wrong, there's plenty of action in each book to keep me more than entertained, but the overall series arc doesn't seem to be getting anywhere. As in I don't feel any closer to getting answers for all the burning questions that I have than when I started the book. It just seems that with every small bit of information revealed, five more unanswered things replace it. That being said, there was a pretty huge shakeup at the end of THE KEEP that I think could really help push the momentum forward in this series, and if I'm right will push this series from good to fantastic in my book. But as far as this book goes, THE KEEP was an entertaining read that I highly recommend to fans of the series.
