A voracious reader since she was a toddler, and an ordained spiritualist, Tonya Cannariato has now presided over the marriage of her love of reading and her love of writing. She’s lived a nomadic life, following first her parents in their Foreign Service career through Africa, Europe, and Asia, and then her own nose criss-crossing America as she’s gotten old enough to make those choices for herself. She’s currently based in the Washington, DC area with her four loves: her husband and three Siberian Huskies. She suspects her Huskies of mystical alchemy with their joyous liberation of her muse and other magical beings for her inspiration. She loves to sleep, to watch her interesting dreams, some of which are now finding new life in written form.

FEEDBACK

Author: Tonya Cannariato
Title: Wytchfire

COVER: 5/10
Generally, the readers liked the cover. They thought the image of Natalie helped them to relate to the character and the lettering was easy to read. However, they thought the blurb was way too short and did not sell the story at all. One reader (girl, aged 15) put in her feedback, ‘This story is pretty good but when I had a look at it on Amazon I thought the blurb was sort of pathetic. Why is the author not trying to sell me the book?’

CONTENT 8/10
Our readers very much enjoyed this story, particularly the ‘very original’ plot: a woman waking up to find she can’t remember any thing – AND SHE’S PREGNANT! The readers very much enjoyed following the character as she attempts to work out where she is and who she is. One reader (girl, aged 14) put, ‘I like a mystery so I enjoyed this story. It was too short but it was good anyway.’
They also liked the fantasy side of the story. One reader put, ‘This author is really good at describing setting. I liked the way she was transported to the fantasy world. Very C S Lewis!’
However, a few of the readers thought the story was a little confusing and had problems understanding what was happening and why.

EDITING 8/10
The readers discovered no spelling, punctuation or grammatical errors in this text. They also felt there was, in general, excellent pacing and the ending was good, setting the story up for a Wytchfire 2. A few of the readers thought the book slowed up a little in the middle chapters and thought the author spent too long describing songs. One reader put, ‘This author is a fantastic writer. The way she shows characters and setting is excellent. But, it did make the story feel a bit slow particularly when she started to remember the song on page 26.’

STYLE 9/10
This is where the story scored most highly. The readers thought the author’s style of writing was superb. They thought she handled the small amount of speech well and she was excellent at describing the feelings of the central character.

TO SUM UP 30/40

Waking up in a strange room, Natalie finds herself disoriented. In fact, her name is only a thought. Even her face is a mystery, so she looks into the mirror to discover a young woman with short brown hair and brown eyes. Where is she? And why can't she recall the simplest of details? She is further perplexed by her enormous, pregnant belly.

Searching for clues, Natalie combs through closets and shelves, hoping to connect with something... anything. But when she settles on a child's play room, and begins to explore a toy train set, she is transported to another realm, where wild storms and vast bodies of water engulf her. She hears words from an unknown source telling her about the trials she must face... trials that will have an impact on many. But is she up for the task?

The natural forest setting, and the whimsical songs offered a magical backdrop, which was initially quite lovely! However, too much attention was given to the songs and descriptives, which began to feel repetitive as the story progressed. Conversely, not enough attention was given to character development, or to important plot points surrounding the meaning and significance of the trials. These and other aspects of the story felt underdeveloped and awkward. Further, the move to have Natalie look into a mirror to have her physical features described to the reader could have been handled differently. In order for the story to make sense, the author had to spell out what was going on, by way of a new character presented near the end.

Overall, there were issues in this story surrounding character development and pacing. Still, the concept was unique, and the other realm was imaginative and vivid.
