How do you fight the monster when it is inside of you?
The black lake beneath Dublin’s medieval city holds a secret. Imprisoned there for millennia, an ancient race of demi-gods have found a way to the surface and are preying on humans to feed their sexual appetites. Hunted to near-extinction, these half-men, half-beasts have been without a single female to breed a new generation. Until now.
All her life, Ashling DeMorgan feared her dreams. She kept her head buried in ancient mythology, because the real world seemed so much scarier. On returning to Dublin to settle her invalid grandmother’s affairs, Ash discovered a city plagued by the same wolf-like creatures that killed her mother. Their bite is like sexual heroin and Ash has been bitten. Now she is trapped in a waking nightmare, with the monster who ordered the death of the only man she’s ever loved. Made to doubt if she ever really knew the assassin-turned-guardian who stole her heart and gave his life for hers, Ash finds herself betrayed by her own changing body.
In a dangerous world of suspicion and divided loyalties, Ash must come to terms with what she is becoming. Worse still, her infuriatingly arrogant captor may just prove to be her most unlikely ally in what will become a life and death race for survival.
MacTire, king of a once formidable race, has lived his life in the shadow of a half-brother who took everything from him. Connal Savage seduced his mate and engineered a genocide that all but exterminated their species. Finally, he has a chance at retribution. Connal’s woman is his for the taking. But are the bonds of brotherhood so easily severed and are the ghosts of the past ever truly dead and buried, or will they come back to haunt him?
The writing duo of Jess and Paula met online through their mutual love of paranormal and urban fantasy romance. They sparked creatively and have been writing together for the past three years. Paula lives in Dublin, Ireland with her family. She set aside a career in medicine to raise her three children. Jess lives in Manchester, England with her mother and dog, Simi. When she isn’t writing up worlds with Paula, she’s a wedding planner for a large retail store.
Becoming Bad starts where Becoming Red finished, so if you haven’t read the first book in the series, what are you waiting for?
Becoming Bad will play with your senses, making you laugh, worry, cheer, sigh, and long for your next venture into the magnificent world of The Becoming Series.
Ash, the heroine of the series finally got her claws out, and she plans to use them on anyone who looks at her the wrong way. She is trapped under the waters in a strange and beautiful in its own weird way world, from where she desperately wants to escape and go to her grandma’s house.
MacTire, king of the Fomorians that live under the lake of Dublin, wants to possess Ashling as a means of payback for what his half-brother did to him, his wife and the race. Ash’s heart doesn’t belong to her, it belongs to Connal. Her body and heart have a mind of their own: her body doesn’t really care that MacTire is not Connal, but her heart does and it weeps for him.
Ash’s grandma, the Morrigan, is considered to be a goddess, a good deity, but it turns out that she is a selfish, manipulative ‘old lady’ that only thinks about herself and no one else. Thanks to her being Ash’s grandmother and based on legends and past experiences, all the fomorians want to kill our dear Ashling!
Will Ash find her way from the underground? Will MacTire achieve his vengeance? What happened to Connal? What are these Femorians and their legend? What happens in Dublin when the moon is full? How do you fight the monster when it’s inside of you? Is everything black and white, or are there layers of grey? Who is telling the truth? The answers to these questions and much more surprising plots and turns, you will obtain when you’ll read Becoming Bad!
This book was even better than the first. It’s get better and better!
It’s packed with action, romance, mystery, mythology, well written and placed hot sex scenes, and well-developed characters and world building. This is an amazing series that Jess Raven and Paula Black created and I cannot wait to begin the next book in this series!
Note: I received this ARC from the authors thru LoP in exchange for an honest review.
This is book 2 of the Becoming Series- to be released shortly.
Overall, this was far more crisply written than the first book and the plotting moves along at a great pace. In no small part that is helped by losing the whole stream-of-Ash-consciousness style (that was my least favorite thing about book one). The writing is sharp and character development is sympathetic to the plot and context. I thought that the authors' writing style has matured nicely with this second book. There were genuinely times when I was gasping out loud with surprise while reading it.Also, I felt a genuine connection and emotional investment in what happens to the characters. I loved the shades of gray with Mac's character development- it moves the book away from the insta-love black/white good/evil dichotomies so prevalent in this genre.
I don't want to dwell too much on plot points as that would spoil the book. Just briefly, I will say that that the cliffhanger ending of Becoming Red (Book 1) is resolved, and then some. All the characters undergo some significant changes driven by great plot devices, and we learn a lot more about the Fomorians' origins and Ash's own lineage (which was a real plot surprise!!)
This being an adult PNR book, there were a couple of sex scenes in there. They were deftly written and not gratuitous.
This was a thoroughly enjoyable read- and I would recommend this book to all fans of this genre.
I want to thank the author and the Lovers of Paranormal group for this free copy (R2R).
I must say, I liked this book much better than Becoming Red (book 1). While with the first book I found myself a little bored and wanting to skip pages and go to the juicy parts, book 2 was hard to put down. I was glued to the pages and I needed to know what would happen next. It was very interesting, and although frustrating and infuriating as hell some times, it was intense and full of emotions and feelings. I wanted to kick Ash's ass for being attracted to MacTire while the man she loved was dead (at least, she thought Connal was dead). And this new man was the reason for said death. How sick and twisted is that? It made me a little angry and upset. Because I really liked Connal, even though he was also a big pain in the ass. But still a cute, hot, passionate pain in the ass. Very much in love with Ash too. It's hard to admit, but as much as I loathed MacTire in the beginning and up to half way of the book, I started to like him later on. And when everything was explained and the truth was clear, I felt less guilty about my liking him (and Ash's liking him as well) and was pleased to see a sort of kind man inside him. Though I still didn't like how they all wolves treated the women. I also liked Madden in this book and was pleased to see him and Connal bond in a sort of friendship. The story was very good and much more interesting and exciting than the previous book. The erotic factor was very much there too and it was a turn on at times, and a turn off at other times. Ash and Connal coming back together was particularly pleasurable and passionate. Though I enjoyed mostly the romance they shared. Very sweet and yet hot. Ash's grandmother was a revelation and a surprise. I knew she was bad, but... well, not that bad. If what I think happened to Ash's mother is true... The ending left me hanging and wanting more. I guess I'll have to wait longer this time to get to read book 3. Hurry up Jess! Please...?
**received the book free from the Lovers of Paranormal group for an honest review
I loved this book! You get to learn so much more about everything that you weren’t sure about from the first book, but of course there are all sorts of new things I have questions about. This book sucked me right in and had all sorts of action, and it was definitely not what I thought would happen. It is always a good thing when you are surprised by authors because you couldn’t predict what was going to happen. There are so many miscommunications going on I do not think any character really knows what happened to the other characters in the past. This story brings to light all of those things. Ash is trying to adapt to all of her changes as she becomes something new. I can’t really describe it without giving something away, so I will tell you if you enjoyed book1, then you will love this one more :) I also want to mention this is very adult and has lots of erotic sex scenes and not for anyone who does not like that sort of thing in their books.
I recommend this book to all the paranormal lovers out there.
Aahhh, I don’t even know how to write this review without spoilers, so it’s going to be a short review. Let me start by saying, you have to read this book!!!! It’s so good. Alliances are formed, hearts broken, and perhaps a prophecy may be fulfilled in the next book. MacTire is looking over Ash and has ordered Connal killed. Ash is heartbroken, and trying to understand why she is lusting after Mac, even though she is enraged with him. She is unlike all the other wolves & that leads to some very interesting situations. Many want her dead, believing that she is an instrument to be used against them by the Morrigan. I can’t even go into the Morrigan situation (Ash’s grandmother) because it will give away to many spoilers. Let’s just say she is truly evil. The myths have always showed her to be a heartless Goddess, and I haven’t read anything in Becoming Bad to show me differently.
The first third of the book I’ve was uncertain of Mac’s intentions. I didn’t like that he was preying on Ash’s emotions and I couldn’t decide whether or not she should trust him. I was so glad the Raven took the time to flesh out Mac’s character and give Ash the chance to know the “real” him. I can’t go into the rest of the book without giving away too much. However, Ash does learn of another living relative she has besides her grandmother & will hopefully learn even more about her mother in the next book. I’m hoping that everyone will be able to put their heads together and find a way out of the curse that the Morrigan has put on them.
Raven continued to reel her readers into her world through her character development and intense revelations that could alter the future for all Fomorians. The final 3rd part of the book blew me away, and had me scrambling to figure out a way that the 3rd book could resolve everything. This book was so much more intense than Becoming Red, and after everything it revealed I’m dying to get my hands on the next book!! I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys mythology or just plain paranormal books. It sets the stage for a huge showdown in the next book, and I’m eagerly anticipating seeing Ash overcome another obstacle and fight for what she believes in.
I would like to thank the amazing authors, Paula Black and Jess Raven, and the group Lovers of Paranormal for offering me a copy of this ARC in exchange for an honest review
I almost don't know what to say about this book... a part of me feels like I need time to process everything so I don't sit here blabbering and gushing about it, and the other part of me just wants to gush. I am in love with this series! Not only did the authors listen to every review they got about book one in the series and use it to revamp Becoming Red (book 1) into an even more amazing start to this series, but they delivered a truly amazing second installment that just left me wanting more.
If you have not read Becoming Red the rest of this review will contain spoilers, but I won't give any spoilers away from this book.
Book 2 in the Becoming Series picks up immediately where we left Ash in Becoming Red, smack dab in the middle of her own personal nightmare with the crazy MacTire and his underworld full of wolves. Ash has a lot of choices to make about her situation and herself, and not a lot of time or resources to work with... I can't really say a whole lot more without giving things away so I'm going to stop there. The pace of this book was great right from the start, and I liked that there wasn't any time lost between this and the first in the series. There was constant action and I was able to keep everything straight throughout the whole story. Once again, I loved the characters... I even found myself liking MacTire (as much as I didn't want to because of my love for Connal). Ash is one of my favorite heroines, she grows so much throughout the story and she was pretty bad ass to begin with.
The authors did such a good job of dragging me straight back into their world of crazy Irish mythology and nightmares that I could barely put the story down to sleep. I was constantly trying to guess what would happen next, and was constantly surprised! After the crazy revelations and twists in Becoming Bad, I don't know how I'm going to survive the wait for the next one.
Frist I'd like say the covers for both books are just amazing.
What I enjoyed about this book was so many things. It picked up right where it left off. With a lot of twists and turns. And well it wasn't what I expected. There's a saying, there's two sides to the story. Yours, mine and the truth. And I feel that it really hits home with this book. This time around the flow of the book was so much better. With the wording and understanding of what they were trying to get across. Bravo! ;) Things just clicked and that's not to say everything was given to you like paint by numbers. Questions were answered that the first book didn't give away, but new ones quickly came to replace it.
This book focus's in Fomor, the world there was very detailed. That at some parts I shuddered. (Which is a good thing!) More time was spent with Mac, and Ash. But the main focus was on Mac and Ash. You get to understand and see Mac and what lead him to become the Man/beast he is today. Nothing is black and white but grey. Choice and actions of others lead to reactions and became what they are today. Ash, is growing and becoming something more. We get to see how it unfolds with her as this happens. And I couldn't help feel scared for her at times with the changes. But what I did love the most, was while she was changing she wasn't the victim. And when overwhelmed she asked for help. I will say I was shocked at the ending, I wasn't expecting another book. The ending did tie up nicely, there wasn't a cliffhanger with this book as the first. But as I've said with the way things were left there will be a third.
This isn't a romance type of book, it does get pretty dark in some places. There's a lot of action and drama, and yes there is a touch of romance. So to me this book was the perfect storm. Had everything I wanted but I honestly didn't expect any less from these two wonderful authors. I received this ARC through my wonderful group LOP.
Book one of this series got off to a bit of a shaky start for me... but, I stuck with it and ended up loving it by the end. And, based on how book one ended I went into this book feeling a little anxious. I was so worried about Ashling... but, what a silly gal I was to worry. Ashling brought a little something with her after she changed into a she-wolf... fangs, claws and FEAR. Yep, these boys got a little more than they bargained for... a big step away from the submissive she-wolf they wanted her to be. I love a strong female character and she definitely fit the bill. The story is far from predictable... it kept me on the edge of my seat and kept me guessing. I found myself rooting for both the King and Connel because as we learn more about both of them we realize things are not always as they seem. The love that they share for Little Red ends up being the one thing that just might save them both or kill them! I mean that literally... I thought this was really well written. I could really feel the inner conflict that Little Red was experiencing as she went through the motions of coping with her newborn instincts. She was constantly at battle with her mind and body and heart. There are some really great supporting characters in this book... my favorite was Knutr. (I have no idea how you pronounce this!) He was crazy... or not... I don't know... but, he did bring a few laughs here and there. This was a very satisfying read... it was a sensual, erotic, exciting, nail biting paranormal thriller! Based on the ending there is likely more to come... I do hope so... I am a fan!
This book gives you more detailed look into Fomor and Fomorian society. At first the wolves were excited and happy to have Ash there, especially aftet they realize she is wolf. When the skuldalid realized that she was something more, they started fearing her and what she would do to their race. It hasn't become clear if she is their saviour or destruction yet. The book also gets into cover ups and misunderstandings nearly destroyed their race by Morrigan taking advantage of Connal's grief and need for vengence. I really wanted not to like MacTire with what little there was in the first book about him. As he is one of the main characters in this book, it showed that he has many different layers to him. With all of his flaws he has a vulerability to him that makes you realize that he is tormented and in some ways still insecure. I am hoping that MacTire and Connal will be able to have a more brotherly relationship in the future regardless of what Morrigan tries to do to cause more grief. It still hasn't become clear why Morrigan wants to destroy the Fomorians, hopefully that will be answered along with other questions in the next book.
I was given this book in exchange for honest review (LoP)
OMG!!! Could this journey get any better!!!! I read the first book Becoming Red and just fell in love with Big Bad and Little Red! These ladies really know how to draw you in and make you enjoy where they take you! But you'd better enjoy serious cliffhangers!!!!!
The book opens with Ash having been bitten and turning into a Varg, she has also been taken captive by MacTire the King of the Fomorians, who also wants her for himself but soon realizes that he can't always have what he wants. Ash is trying to come to terms with whats happening to her as she believes she's becoming one of the monsters that killed her mother. During her journey she finds that she is a lot stronger than she ever imagined and begins to see that she does have choices even though her heart is breaking over Connal.
If you enjoy the legends and myths about the Norsemen and Ireland then you really need to read these books!
I was given this book in exchange for honest review (LoP).This is the second book in the Becoming novels. A paranormal erotica that takes the reader on a wild ride .I enjoyed the first one so much I immediately started reading this second in the series and I was not disappointed. It was just as awesome as the first .Action, romance, mystery, mythology, and well-developed characters this is an amazing read and I cant wait to begin the next in this series .I love everything about this book and highly recommend this book and the entire series to other lovers of paranormal. Two Thumbs way way up !!!
The follow up to Becoming Red and it's just fantastic. The authors have done a really good job and the story is really fleshed out in this one. They have built an amazing dark world with pheromones running wild. A great read and would highly recommend it. Roll on number 3, I can't wait!
I was given this book in exchange for an honest review (LoP) An excellent continuation of the first book. I truly enjoyed this installment and the continued development of the storyline. We pick up where the last book leaves us, with Ash in Form with the wolf king and his band of wolves and Connal, presumed dead. During her time with the King, Ash learns more of what she is thought to be (only female wolf) and the history surrounding the wolves. The king continues his pursuit of her, claiming her for himself as his mate, bidding his time until Ash comes around. However, Ash continues to hold out hope for her true love, Connal, who is not dead as feared, and the coming full moon.
I loved the fast paced book and the development throughout both the world of Fomor and Dublin. I especially loved the glimpse into what caused Connal to snap and earn his nickname. Things occur which raise questions regarding Ash's appearance and pits her again the Fomorian people and casts doubts on the king. Ash escapes topside, but is trapped in Form, until the wolves begin to hunt her down. And it turns out that grandma, is not so nice and in order release Ash from her otherworldly prison, Connal strikes a bargain with her, but is it one that he can keep? And will Ash chose him or the death of his brother, the king?
Kept me on my toes and I truly enjoyed this book. Can't wait to see what happens next!
First: If you haven't read Becoming Red, I suggest you do, before you proceed on. This novel picks up where Becoming Red leaves off. I really didn't know what to expect when I read these two books. I LOVE reading about Ireland and Irish myths as Ireland is where my family is from. Now I am sitting here trying to figure out what to say without spoiling the series but I want you to know if you love paranormal and folklore, READ THIS SERIES!
Now just a few tidbits because you really need to read this for yourself. I've purchased both books for my mom. (On 8.11.13 Red was $.99!!) And I am picky what I send to her. So, that is how much I like this series....
From Becoming Red to Becoming Bad, there is a growth in Ashling (Ash) DeMorgan. The books starts off right back with MacTire and his wolves. Ash is bitten, and she thinks she is becoming what killed her mother... A lot of time is spent with Ash and Mac, also Connel and Madden.
There is a lot of details and uncovering in this book. A lot of questions that were left unanswered in Red were answered here. There is a lot of details about Forman and the Formorians. At first, Ash was welcomed, but soon they realized she was more than just a wolf...
This book doesn't end like I thought it would. And OMG a third book?!?! Becoming Red was a bit of a clifty but it worked well since I was able to go into Becoming Bad. I am so ready to see what happens next!!!
Becoming Bad was part of the trilogy I received from the authors in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Becoming Bad picks up right where Becoming Red left off and while I almost gave up on the first book a couple of times in the beginning the more I got into the series the better I liked it. The authors definitely found their groove and this book got me hooked.
Ash finds herself trapped with MacTire living under Dublin with the Fomorians. MacTire is still trying to make her his mate but her heart still belongs to Connal.
The descriptions of Fomor were very detailed and it's not some place you would want to be trapped. Ash discovers her inner wolf and she is no longer feeling as helpless and afraid as she used to.
This book gives you the backstory as to why Mac and Connal despise each other so much and why they are so competitive. Of course all is not what not what it seems and the Morrigan has been manipulating everyone for centuries.
I am interested to see how this Mac, Ash and Connal love triangle plays out, Fomor history would have them all together with no issues. Guess I will just have to finish book 3.
Really they ended the second book like that.*grumbles alot* Besides from that I loved it!! 4 our of 5 stars!!! I liked it more that the first one. Lil Red showed strength when she herself thought she was weak. Big Bad holding so much grief. The witch makes one remember and be thankful of the salem trials. The Brother with all his roughness he comes through better than I gave him credit for. I set myself not to like him my view has changed. (Smiles) The Doc cant help but take a second look at him as well. No one really knew how lil red would be. A hybrid? Will she get all witchy or be reduced to a sex craved slave? I really like the discriptions how the story flowed how the magic intertwined and kept it all exciting. The sex was hot not too graphic rough and loving if its such a thing. Will lil red get her big bad? I so enjoyed it and hope you will to.
Let me just say I was tickled that the authors saw what the reviewers were saying about getting a little lost in the first one.. yet still exceptional.. and this one wow.. took right off and I felt even more tied to the story. Thankful that it went right into the story line..and definitely more twists and turns that makes me more excited to read.
I found that this book I was more intrigued with Mac and why he is the way he is.. Ash is becoming more leading.. and not as helpless sounding. and open minded for more insight from others. There was a lot of drama, so anyone looking for steamy passion well not really in this book.. its hard core, and darkish, yet truly fulfilling.
First, I would like to thank (the authors) Jess Raven for giving me this book for an honest review. I have to say that I loved this book, the authors did an even much better job of writing this story than the first book. With action, romance, mystery, mythology, and well-developed characters you can't go wrong. Ash is going through changes and she does not fall into the victim, I love that she is strong as she needs to be. Even when her heart is hurting and her body is betraying her and confusing her. I am looking forward to the next book.
So this is one of those series that I wish I had not started reading until ALL of the books had been released... because now I have to wait for the next book! I hope its coming soon. I like the world that Jess and Paul have built in Ireland. It reminds me a bit of the Fever series by Karen Marie Moning. And there is no shortage of hunky males between Conall and MacTire. I also love the book covers - but I am not sure how they relate to the story as it doesn't mention Ash having facial markings. I recommend this book to fans of urban fantasy and stories of the fae.
Ash's feeling shift as she finds herself caught between two enemies. As wars and passions rage Ash needs to decide what her feelings are and just who's side she is really on.
I was confused by Mac's intentions at first and wasn't really sure about him, however towards the end of the book my views changed. I like all the mythology thrown in and the character development is great.
Note: I received this ARC copy from the Lovers of Paranormal R2R program, all opinions are my own.
I received this book in return for an honest review LoP. Once I finished Becoming Red, I knew I'd have to read this one. It doesn't disappoint at all. I loved the way the action just kept coming. How you keep finding those little bits of truth that piece together the backstory. And the way that Ash takes control... I seriously am going to hate waiting for the next one to come out. This leaves you on the edge of your seat wondering what new strange twist will happen. And I love it!
This was a really enjoyable read. It was well written and had an imaginative plot that kept me hooked until the last page. I loved the characters and I'm looking forward to reading more from them in the next book.
I got this book in exchange for a honest review (LoP). This book is better then the first one. The feud between the brothers and the fact that they both like the same girl is great. It is very well written. I enjoyed reading it alot! I highlt recommend it!!
Without a doubt one of the best books I've ever read. It doesn't have the same issue that Becoming Red (book one) had, with the overly done descriptions of things, people, and events, and flows much better because of this. I'm now in love with the whole series and its characters.
It's shocking for me to like a second book better than the first. I really liked this book. Don't get me wrong, I liked the first book but it took more than half the book to get interesting.
