About the author

Akkihebbalu Narasimha Murthy Rao was a Kannada author.

Though popular for his atheistic thoughts and writings, he has also written dramas, short stories and in addition headed a couple of government assignments. He was the first director of the Kannada & Sanskriti Department, spearheaded by Kengal Hanumanthaiah.

Born at Akkihebbalu in (Mandya District), he studied in Mysore and later taught English at Mysore University. He was the first Director of Kannada and Culture Department of the Karnataka Government and also presided over the 56th All India Kannada Sahitya Sammelana held in 1984.

He died on 23rd August 2003 living a full life of 103 years.

ಕಳೆದು ಹೋದ ಕಾಲವ ನೆನಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳದವರು ವಿರಳ. ಆದರೆ ನಮಗೆ ಪರಿಚಯವೇ ಇಲ್ಲದ(ಇನ್ನು ಆಗಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವೇ ಇಲ್ಲದ) ಕಾಲವೂ, ಆ ಘಟ್ಟದ ಬಳಕೆಯ ವಸ್ತುಗಳೂ ,ಜನರೂ ಓದಲು ದೊರೆತರೆ ಆ ಖುಷಿಯೇ ಬೇರೆ . 1900 ರಿಂದ ಒಂದು ಶತಮಾನ ಬದುಕಿದ, 'ದೇವರು' ಅಂತಹ ವೈಚಾರಿಕ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಬರೆದ ಮೂರ್ತಿರಾಯರ ಬದುಕಿನ ಕಥನ ಆಸಕ್ತಿದಾಯಕ. ಬ್ರಿಟಿಷರ, ರಾಜರ ಕಾಲದಿಂದ ಪ್ರಜಾಪ್ರಭುತ್ವದೆಡೆಗಿನ ಈ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಜಕೀಯ ಬದಲಾವಣೆಗಳ (ನನಗೆ ನಿರಾಶೆ ತಂದ ವಿಷಯ.ಇಂತಹ ವಿದ್ವಾಂಸ ಅಷ್ಟು ತಟಸ್ಥರಾಗಿದ್ದರೇ ಎಂಬುದು) ಬಗೆಗೆ ಬೆಳಕು ಚೆಲ್ಲದೆ ಬರಿದೇ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ ಚಿತ್ರಣಗಳ ಕೊಡುವ ಈ ಆತ್ಮಕತೆ ಆ ಅರ್ಥದಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಜವಾದದ್ದು. ಹಿರಿಯರಿಗೆ ಮೆಲುಕು ಹಾಕಲು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಸಾಮಾಗ್ರಿ. ಹಾಗೇ ನಮ್ಮಂಥಹ ಕಿರಿಯರಿಗೆ ಹೀಗಿತ್ತೇ ಎಂದು ಅಚ್ಚರಿ ಪಡಲೂ.

ದೇವರು ಎಂಬ ವೈಚಾರಿಕ ಕೃತಿಯಿಂದ ನನ್ನ ನಿದ್ದೆಗೆಡಿಸಿದ್ದ ಲೇಖಕರ ಆತ್ಮಕಥೆ. ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಅಪರೂಪದ ಆತ್ಮಕಥೆಗಳಲ್ಲೊಂದು.
