About the author

Haim Be’er (חיים באר), also publishing as Chaim Be'er, was born in Jerusalem in 1945 and was raised in an Orthodox home. He completed his army service in the military chaplaincy. In 1966, he began working for Am Oved Publishing House and a few years later became member of the editorial board. For many years, he also wrote a weekly column for the daily Davar. He taught Hebrew literature and creative writing at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, and at present he is editor of the Kesset Project for debut fiction. Be’er has received several literary awards for his poetry and fiction, including the Prime Minister's Prize twice (1979; 1993), the Bernstein Prize (1980), the Kugel Prize (2000), the Bialik Prize (2002), the ACUM Prize for Lifetime Achievement (2005), the Neuman Prize (2008), the Brenner Prize (2011), the Prime Minister'€™s Award for the Fostering and Preservation of the Hebrew language (2012) and the Ramat Gan Prize (2013). His novel, Feathers, is included in "The Greatest Works of Modern Jewish Literature" (2001).

"נוצות" פורסם לראשונה בשנת 1979 זהו הרומן הראשון שפירסם באר והוא סיפור ידידותם של המספר ודמות הזויה ותימהונית בשם מרדכי לדר בירושלים של שנות ה- 50 של המאה ה- 20. בציר המרכזי של הסיפור, המתמקד בידידות בין לדר והמספר, זהו סיפור שיברה של האוטופיה ושבר החלום על כינון מדינה בנוסח לינקיאני אולם המחבר אינו מתמקד רק בשנות ה 50 ואינו מתמקד רק בדמותו של לדר אלא פורס לפני הקורא גלריה שלמה של דמויות תמהוניות והזויות או כמאמר יוסף אורן במאמרו בדעת: אוטופיסטים המתהדרים בנוצות לא להם באמצעותן הם מקווים לעוף מעל המציאות העגומה היומיומית. כל זאת לצד אירועים המתרחשים עד שנות ה- 70 מלחמת ששת הימים ומלחמת יום כיפור.

במהלך הסיפור משלב חיים באר אנקדוטות אוטוביוגרפיות וכנראה מאחר ולא רצה באופן בוטה וישיר לספר את סיפור משפחתו בספר הספציפי הזה (מה שיעשה בחבלים הנפלא) הוא משלב את דמותו ואת משפחתו כשכנים של משפחת המספר.

דמותו הציבעונית של מרדכי לדר, ספק מתרים כספים (שלטענת בהירה שכטר התופרת המאוהבת בו - לוקח את כספי התרומות לכיסו) ספק נקרופיל חובב גופות, מהלכת קסם על הילד. לדר, שעוסק רוב ימיו בגיבוש עקרונות הצבא הלינקיאני, מנסה לגייס אותו לצבא "התזונה" ומבטיח לו להיות מפקד. משפחתו של הילד וחברי משפחתו עושים מאמץ כביר לנתקו מהשפעת הדמות המתעתעת וההזויה. אימו של הילד, מובילה את המאמץ הזה: היא מתעבת את לדר ואת חברו של בעלה ריקלין הקברן. היא דמות דומיננטית בחיו של הילד ולאחר מות אביו, היא חוזרת עם בנה להר המנוחות ומשחזרת את הקברים של אישתו הראשונה של אביו ושל אחיו הבכור של המספר.

"נוצות" עוסק בעיקר בחשיפת האמת המסתתרת תחת רעיונות, תחפושות, תירוצים ומלבושים כל זאת באמצעות מריטת הנוצות מהמתהדרים בהן.
השפה העשירה, האנקדוטות ולעיתים גם הסאטירה מרככים את הקריאה וגרמו לי להתמוגג, יחד עם זאת מדובר ברומן מורכב, בעל רבדים רבים ובעל עושר שמחייב קריאה חוזרת כי להתחיל ולפענח את מלוא הרעיונות המסתתרים גם הם תחת נוצות.

זהו הספר הראשון שקראתי מפרי עטו של חיים באר. הכתיבה העברית, בשילוב תיבול מהמקורות, יפיפיה אבל העלילה לא מספיק מעניינת. יכול להיות שזה קשור יותר בי ובכך שאני לא במוד ולכן אולי בפעם אחרת אמשיך. כרגע אין לי סבלנות לכך.

סיימתי את הספר בקריאה שנייה. ההתרשמות הראשונית שלי , כפי שתיארתי לעיל, ליוותה אותי גם בהמשך. כישרון הכתיבה של באר לא זקוק לציונים ממני כי הוא ברור אבל הספר הזה עמוס מדי ולפרקים מתיש... לעומת זאת את ספרו השני אותו קראתי "לפני המקום" כבר ממש אהבתי.

This book is abundant with tales and anecdotes of the jewish Jerusalem folklore ranging as early as the nineteen chentury all the way up to 1974. All of them sewn together by one thread, the story of Ledder, an insane utopist, and his friendship with a young boy during three years of the 1950s in Jerusalem. This sewing together is seamlessly done by a masterly story telling and the polished, multilayered Hebrew of Haim Be'er.

I finally read a book by Chaim Be’er. That’s how I felt after finishing it. This was the hardest book I’ve read since I began reading Hebrew novels over 20 years ago. Other reviewers have called his Hebrew “rich”. I would add “obscure.” It seemed like he never used a common word if a rarer one was available. Also, there was a lot of namedropping.. Apparently, I was supposed to recognize all the names of rabbis and their descendants and forebears. Mostly, I didn’t. It took me so long to read the book that I pretty much lost track of the framing device. And I don’t know what the ultimate point was. A very interesting story, though:
A boy growing up in Me’ah Sh’earim in the 50’s becomes sort of attached to an older man who has a utopian vision for Israel and society in general. The man is insane and the episode ends in tragedy for him. Does the boy learn from this or does he just experience it? The framing device has the boy almost 20 years later as a reservist serving in the burial unit of the army in Sinai (and over the canal) in the closing days of the Yom Kippur war. The two stories come together at the end sort of indirectly. I there a point? There’s a lot about death and burial. Growing up, a close family friend is a chief cemetery official. But that’s a feature, not a point.
A few years ago I picked up a book by Be’er that turned out to be a collection of anecdotes about life in Jerusalem over several decades. Again, much obscure language and name dropping of people I guess I was supposed to recognize.
I was a little surprise that his novel read the same way.
So why am I giving this book four stars rather than two? I guess it’s a way of congratulating myself for finishing it. Also, despite the difficulty of reading it, the story and characters seemed very real.

For the life of me I couldn't find a single interesting thing that this book is so praised about. Very boring. Maybe back when he wrote the book there was some interest into what the 'penguins' doing but in the last 20 or so years we know that they mostly deal in corruption, pedopelia, gay sex and scheming money from the government.
