Fun fables from the forest for readers 4 - 8. Author C.D. Baker invites children to discover five virtues of a happy life through stories told by trees. The power of gratitude, humility, selflessness, kindness, and forgiveness are revealed in memorable tales that children are sure to love...and to remember.
C. David Baker’s first novel, A Journey of Souls, was released in 2000 and re-released in 2004 as Crusade of Tears…a Christee Nominee. He has written nine historical novels, two Christian devotionals, and a children's book published variously in the U.S., U.K., Germany, Ukraine and Russia. Research has taken him throughout Europe, and his interviews have included a variety of fascinating people such Manfred Rommel, son of Fieldmarshal Rommel, and Johann Voss, author and veteran of the Waffen-SS, both of whom contributed much to Baker’s 'Seduction of Eva Volk.
The descendant of early German and Scottish immigrants to Pennsylvania, Baker’s family tree is an assortment of Mennonite, Reformed, and Presbyterian families including Adam Neff–the flag bearer who stood by Zwingli as he died during the battle of Kappel, William Rittenhouse–the first American paper maker, and William Penn’s Dutch grandmother. Twenty of his ancestors served in Pennsylvania militias during the American Revolution.
The father of two sons, Baker lives on a small farm with his wife, Sue. Together they raise livestock with an interest in natural/organic methods and a passion for humane treatment. Failure has been part of his life as well. It has been these deep valleys that have led David to the well of Grace from which the essence of his writing is drawn,
This book is a fun book for children ages 4-8. It has 5 different fables in it to teach children different values .. thankfulness, forgiveness, humility, helpfulness and kindness. The trees teach the seedlings these virtues. The colors and pictures are very bright and fun. Children will love to read and re-read this book. At the end of each fable is a small group of questions about what was read to reinforce the concept to be learned. There is also a page to draw that concept. There is also Christian values being taught. I love this book. If I could give more that 5 stars I would. Giving your child this book would be a great a gift to them. I very highly recommend it to all.
An excellent interactive book for young readers, families and teachers. These beautiful short stories convey a special moral, typically with trees as characters. Thankfulness, forgiveness, humility, helpfulness and kindness are major themes brilliantly woven in story form and enhanced for the visual learner through splendid illustrations. I especially like to ask the questions the author has posted after every chapter, plus there's a page for drawing Christmas trees, or anything you'd like.
Blue Spruce is a favorite with our grandchildren, a widespread coniferous tree that has a distinctive conical shape with hanging cones but is so unsatisfied. Next, we learn about a maple tree with silver leaves underneath and a large Norway maple shade tree who can't grow well next to selfish Shady Maple. Then, a fast growing tree named Poplar sees that Mulberry, a small deciduous tree can't keep up but together face a strong lightning and thunder storm. Towards the end we read about the dialogue between a wise mighty Grandfather Oak and lazy Slope-Oak tree that may grow into something very large or impressive. Lastly, a heart warming garden transformation through time, with much pruning, a vision of hope and love fulfilled. I love the author's writing style of talking trees and I can picture them in my own backyard. This is a superb legacy to share with all of our grandchildren.
Get this one, it doesn't disappoint. You will be blessed and I long for the story to be a movie one day!
I was touched by the dedication and immediately drawn to the first illustration of the tree roots holding hands at the beginning of this book.
This book takes us through a mythical world of talking trees; of stories shared through the ages and valuable lessons that need to be learnt.
The stories are well written and easy to read. They follow the story of a particular tree and the problem he or she may have. The problems are caused by a lack of a specific virtue. There is a wiser tree nearby who offers sage advice to help the tree understand where he or she is going wrong.
After each story is a quote from the Bible that helps centre the reader’s thoughts on the main source of virtues. I don’t think this would put non-religious people off reading the book because the virtues given are at the core of every belief. We set our moral compass from these virtues regardless of our faith. They are not over bearing but instead, informative and important to the overall text of the story.
After the quote there are a set of simple questions about the virtue. These offer the child the opportunity to reflect about what happened to the tree and, of course, their own behaviours.
My favourite story was The Slope Oak. It is a lesson about taking the easy way in life and suffering the consequences. I like the imagery conveyed through the descriptive writing as poor Slope Oak crashes down and becomes a bridge lying across Mudbottom Creek. Even after this terrible tragedy he is able to find a purpose and meaning in his life with the help from his friends.
I think teachers and parents will find value in presenting this book to the children in their care. I highly recommend it.
The author wrote a wonder storybook that allows children and adults use their imagination. This book is about five forest fables where the reader learns values of thankfulness, forgiveness, humility,, helpfulness and kindness. Along with the wonderful lessons, the illustrations are charming. There are Bible verses where the child and his parents, grandparents can look up and find out how they pertain to the lessons. At the end of each little story there are some questions to help the reader understand what he's read. There are pages where drawings can be done to show what the child has learned. Each story tells of a different kind of tree and how that tree started from a seedling. On the first page is a place f or the little one to write his or her name. That is important to little ones. It makes the book theirs. Their name is in it. The print is large enough for little ones to read without any difficulty. The reader discovers that the trees and life all start from a seedling. A wonderful, clean, Christian book of how the seedlings talk to the trees and learn from them. This is one of the best children's books I have read. It not only has lessons to be learned, but it is fun and interesting. I hope there are more books to come from this author.
I would recommend this book to children and adults to be read over rand over again. To be pt on the bookshelf and bring down occasionally as a reminder of the trees and seedling and what they mean.
Seedlings is the story of the trees! If we were one among the trees, how would our lives been? Seedlings will take your children to an imaginative life of the trees. Trees eat, drink, sleep and share as much as we do. They interact and make friendship with their fellow trees as well. They age and learn values just like we do. Author Baker has brought out the essence of life’s greatest virtues in the form of five beautifully written fables from the forest. Each story emphasizes one of these:
Mr. Baker wrote a cute book for the young and young-at-heart. The characters are the trees, odd as it may seem for some. The stories tried to pass on some truths; both common sense ones, and those based on a more Biblical principle.
I enjoyed it for both the interactive features, and the paraphrasing of the Scriptures. Oh, and the illustrations are gorgeous as well. It made the reading experience all the more enjoyable.

My Review:
Who knew that seedlings could learn so much from trees? The older and wiser trees seem to have all the answers to life's lessons. But what if the seedlings are surrounded by more seedlings? Then the outcome will be slightly different because they will have to face bullying. And as a result they will become selfish and in turn will not be able or willing to share the things that made them wise.
Seedlings, is a wonderful story filled with amazing stories that can be told generation after generation---timeless. Five stories that will encourage children to be thankful, humble, kind, helpful, and forgiving. Recommended for ages 4-8, children everywhere can learn honorable life lessons, in this inspiring children's book.

I wonder how many children know that trees have life – that they are living beings too. Most children identify trees and plants as ‘things’ rather than ‘beings’. Seedlings will tell them the truth; that trees are full of life! The next time they see a tree, they will imagine its life. What could be its name? Or probably they might assign a new name to a tree in their house. They might wonder what the tree is thinking now and who could be her friends. They will think twice before they crush a flower or tear a leaf because now they know there is life in them too.
The Author, CD Baker pens "Seedlings; Fables from the Forest" allowing a child's imagination run and filled with wonderful messages about life lessons. At the end of each tale, there is a Bible verse that is totally appropriate but not going overboard on the religion. I was impressed on how beautifully done the illustrations were and highly recommend this book to all children ages 4 thru.....
