Annihilate Me, Volume 1

The business of love is dangerous.

For Jennifer Kent, a recent MBA graduate who has been searching for work in Manhattan for four long months, time and money are running out. If she doesn't find work soon, she'll need to return to her native Maine, where the job situation is even more bleak.

And where her abusive parents lie in wait.

But when an unorthodox arrangement is proposed, Jennifer decides to take it. She agrees to be the "girlfriend" of Alexander Wenn, the reluctant, billionaire CEO of Wenn Enterprises, who is so devastatingly good looking, he needs a beautiful woman like Jennifer on his arm to "keep the wolves at bay."

In this case, the wolves are other women, all of whom vie for his attention so aggressively, they keep him from focusing on business at the exclusive events he must attend. It's there that deals are cut. What they want is his money and his power. Damaged by a past event, the only thing Alex wants to do is focus on work. And to forget the past.

But can Jennifer deny their white-hot chemistry? As she's swept into this glittering otherworld of society and big business, she finds herself struggling to keep from falling for Alex, an almost impossible feat she nevertheless must meet.

Armed with her MBA, Jennifer Kent knows about business. But what she doesn't know is what could destroy her--the business of protecting her own heart. And maybe her own life.

This story unfolds over multiple volumes approximately 50,000 words each.

WARNING: GIFs and some spoilers ahead!

On 1/27, I posted this status update as a warning that I would flip shit if the book continued to chronicle the process of shopping and dressing for every little event. If a story decides to stuff its pages with fantasy shopping scenes instead of real plot, then I reserve the right to call it fucking stupid. So, I should just do as I promised and start copy-pasting like a fiend, but guess what?

I'm reviewing it anyway. That's just how I roll.

Annihilate Me Vol. 1 is a "novel" (more on the loose acceptance of that word later) about recent MBA grad Jennifer Kent, who moved to NYC from Maine to fulfill her business dreams and to escape from her abusive parents. There are 2 things you have to know about Jennifer Kent: 1) She's brilliant. 2) She's stunning and gorgeous and beautiful and EVERYTHING but doesn't know it.

If you don't understand these two things by the end of the book, you didn't read it, because EVERY character goes out of his/her way to compliment Jennifer on them.

Her roommate does it:
"Stop underestimating your looks. I think you're not getting a job because you intimidate the women who are interviewing you."

The kindly female cab driver does it:
"I think this is my hundredth interview in the past few months."

"Looking like you do, I'd think someone would hire you in a minute."

The cashier at a spa does it:
"I wish I looked like you."

Billionaire Alex can't get enough of doing it:
"You're beyond impressive, Jennifer. I've never seen anyone so quick and so bright as you were when you convinced Cyrus to take the deal to his father. Watching you in action was a turn on. And I'd be lying if I said I didn't find you attractive. I think you're beautiful."

Ms. Blackwell, who doesn't even like Jennifer at the start, loves to do it:
"I don't know how we're going to fit that ass of yours into a dress without tailoring, but we'll do it. Hopefully. And, no, that wasn't an insult. It was envy. Every woman wishes she had a body like yours."

Some other rich guy does it like it's going out of style:
"You're obviously a hit here tonight. You're a new face. And a stunning one. Sorry, Alex, but it's true. I've been watching the men watch her. We need someone like Jennifer here tonight-she's made it more interesting."

Her new boss basically hands her his dick on a platter:
"But you have style, Jennifer, and you're very bright. At this point, that's clear to all of us. You look and dress impeccably. You're also young and, if I might say, all of the staff agrees that you are stunning..."

And that isn't even all of it. It's fucking constant. If I wanted to read about someone being told they're beautiful for 50,000 words, I'd just read BAVR's diary, damn it.

Fuck yeah.

So, Jennifer can't get a job despite being the most brilliantsauce hottie since Neil Degrasse Tyson, probably because she has no work experience. According to everyone else, though, she can't get a job because all of the interviewers are jealous haters.

Seems reasonable.

After all, don't we always hear stories about the oppressed plight of pretty people? THE STREETS ARE JUST FILLED WITH STARVING PRETTY PEOPLE. WHEN WILL THIS MADNESS STOP?

Jennifer lands an interview with Wenn Industries, which apparently does a little bit of everything (oil AND airlines?), for a secretarial position. She blows the interview but has the good luck to run into a handsome man named Alex in the elevator who is quite taken with her. Incidentally, Jennifer receives a phone call later that day inviting her back for an interview as an "executive assistant." Upon returning to Wenn Industries, she realizes that Alex is actually Alexander Wenn, the billionaire and CEO of the business. Alex offers Jennifer a job. He wants to pay her a quarter million dollar salary to dress up in expensive clothes and jewelry and accompany him to society events as his girlfriend. And I know EXACTLY what you're thinking.

Precisely. How do I keep falling into these Accidental Prostitute stories? But to be fair, Alex and Jennifer insist that the "business arrangement" is totally legit. You see, Alex can't get any of his business networking done with hoards of preening gold-diggers trying to dip their manicured hands into his bank account. You know how hard it is to be a billionaire, guys. Don't pretend that Alex has any other recourse than to hire a paid escort professional pretend girlfriend to keep the bitches at bay. Jesus.

Thus begins a tedious rendering of the written word that features such gripping stories as: Jennifer Goes Shopping, Jennifer Gets Dressed, Walking Through High Society Functions, Meaningless Business Talk, Jennifer and Her Roommate Get Dressed For Dinner, Jennifer's Roommate's Writing Process, DANCE ABUSE, People Tell Jennifer She's a Hottie, Restaurant Stuff, Dead Wife Matchmaking, and the ever-popular Jennifer Uses Her Brilliant Mind to Tell off Bitches. Oh, you won't believe how many bitches Jennifer tells off in this story.

One highlight near the end of the book features Ms. Blackwell teaching Jennifer to eat greens - SO MANY GREENS - before a big event in order to poop all the bloat out of her system.

Gross.

I'm sorry I had to share that with you, but I can't suffer alone. (For those of you wondering, IT WORKED.)

Then the book just ends because this "novel" is nothing more than one-fucking-third of a longer story. IT IS NOT A NOVEL. WHY ARE YOU MARKETING IT AS A COMPLETE STORY? If something, ANYTHING other than bullshit had happened in "Vol. 1," I would have let the cliffhanger slide. But unless you count Alex's admission to being a fucking creeper as something...

"Alex."
"It's good to see you."
"How did you know to find me here?"
"I had you followed the other night."

... then it's clear that the splitting up of a complete story is nothing more than an excuse to torment readers and/or get more sales. Well, guess what!

I won't be reading the next volume.

Not great.

The story had potential but it dragged on and on.

Got sick of reading how pretty, how hot and how beautiful Jennifer was and how she didnt know it or believe them.

Alex was a totally closed book and you litrally found out nothing of interest about him.

Then there was the best friend who was a self published writer.....way to suck up to Amazon Ms Ross....got sick or seeing that her friend was going to publish on amazon, she was in Amazons top 100, amazon are flipping great....yada yada yada....I hope you dont want to publish this book anywhere else other than Amazon as I dont think Nook will be too happy with all the Amazon arse kissing...

And then that brings me on to the dialogue.

It was so stiff, I actually didnt believe a single conversation that went on in this book. This is not how people talk. Especially to their friends- it was so formal.

I know it was a freebie but I still feel let down by this book as I was so excited about it.

This short book tells the story of an out of work, down on her luck, MBA graduate, Jennifer, that is hired to be arm-candy for a hot billionaire, Alex, so that he can focus on business at special events. Alex gets jealous at event #1 and Jennifer quits, despite the ridiculously large salary she's being paid to attend parties, because his behavior offends her. Alex feels like an ass, pursues Jennifer and after playing hard to get, she concedes. I'm sure you get the drift.

The storyline, thus far, is not an original one and was highly predictable every step of the way. So, if you're looking for something new or different, this won't be the one for you. That aside, I did enjoy this book, despite the predictability. Let's face it, some story lines get repeated because they work. Who doesn't want a modern spin-off of Cinderella?

While both Alex and Jennifer had many of the cliche characteristics we've all come to expect in this familiar storyline (history of abuse, tragic loss of loved one, jealousy issues, unwillingness to acknowledge feelings, etc.), they were not too extreme or overdone and were both very likable characters. Alex did not come off as an overbearing, aggressive jackass, like many of the alpha-males in this genre do. Similarly, Jennifer was not the weak-minded pushover that is so typical of the heroines in this genre. Instead, she was smart, witty and unwilling to take ANY crap from Alex. In fact, I had to re-read the section where she walked out on him and quit because I couldn't figure exactly what she had gotten upset about!

It is very short and does feel like the story is just getting started when it ends, versus feeling like a complete novel. However, it was an easy and enjoyable read that kept me entertained. I will be reading the next volume.

Review for Vol 1-4: This was a great read, the suspense was good and I liked the main characters. I spent the whole time trying to figure who was the threat and it took right to the very end before I figured it out. I liked that it wasn't obvious. I have to say, my favorite character was Ms Blackwell. She almost stole the show from Alex and Jennifer. There was also enough about Lisa and Tank that has me wanting to dive right into their story. Great writing

Problematic characterization: Mary Sue protagonist who protests consistently throughout the story every time someone compliments her beauty, intelligence, and splendid backside. She also suffers from horrible judgement: she buys a $3,000 suit for her job interview when she's broke as a joke, takes a job as a

Then there's the alpha male hero, hereafter referred to as Sexy Jerk, who has a tantrum due to

Problematic dialogue: TL;DR about so many, many things: business deals and the moguls who make them, fashion, restaurants, martinis, her roommate's book... one can easily just flip page entire pages and not miss a thing. Yawn. This goes hand-in-hand with the pacing, which alternated between half-speed, don't-skip-a-detail snail's pace and racing like a cheetah on amphetamines through scenes that needed a bit more exposition. And then there's the pretty gross interaction we're treated to, about how to drop a massive deuce in order to flatten the tummy in preparation for a big night in a tight dress. Really? We already have to cope with the protagonist's stupidity, and now we're forced to endure thinking about her bowel movements?

So, yeah, it's bad, but the part that irritates me the most is how this and its "sequels" are really just one book that would probably come in at about 150,000 words if the author didn't cut each off at about 50k words, creating artificial tension at cliffhangery moments in a transparent arm-twisting attempt to get readers to purchase the next volume.

Two problems with this:
1. If she hadn't padded the story with so much irrelevant TL:DR crapola, otherwise known as "tightening one's prose", the story would have come in at a tidy 100k and been a more enjoyable and consistent ready. The way it is now is vastly irritating, thus making the reader less likely to buy those next volumes.

2. The characters are so obnoxious, we don't care what happens next, thus have no motivation to get the next 2 books.

Now *I'm* getting TL;DR. Long story short: bad story is bad. And now for the footnotes:

What the hell did I just read? I seriously don't understand how this book could get so many positive reviews, it's worse than a dime novel. And why oh why do I keep reading free books? I've been so disappointed by those stories already and this one sadly wasn't the famous exception.

Spoilers

The "story" revolves around Jennifer, a 25 year old woman with abusive (cliché #1) parents from Maine. She is so soooo beautiful and intelligent that basically everyone is intimidated and/or envious of her (cliché #2), which is why she apparently wasn't able to find a job in NYC - even though she's been living there for four whole months already. Poor girl. So Jennifer meets Alex Wenn, a beautiful and swoonworthy billionaire with issues and a "past" (cliché #3-10), who is so taken by her that he offers her a job as his pretend-girlfriend... he's such a catch, he can't even attend galas and other events for business because women keep falling at his feet and bugging him (cliché #11). We're told that she is sooo broke, yet immediately after the call from Wenn Enterprises (and after she's told she'll get paid 250K per year *oh puhleeease*) she went shopping and bought a Prada suit and new killer heels - even though she didn't even had the job yet. WHO in their right mind would do such a thing? And all the shopping scenes throughout the book... oh my gosh are you serious? There were more dress/shoes/jewelry descriptions and talk about how perfect and hot and beautiful and smart Jennifer is than actual dialogue between the characters. If you can describe their talks as such, that is. At one point I was actually tempted to throw my kindle across the room and bang my head against the wall at their meaningful (not), smart (not) and ingenious (guess what? not!) dialogue, I just couldn't take anymore shallowness.

Oh and yeah... our 25yo heroine is, of course, a virgin (cliché #Idontevenknowanymore) and the book ends right before they're about to have sex because the author wants us to pay for another books in the series. Actually, apparently it's not a series because it's "Vol. 1". That clarification makes us all feel so much better, thank you.

Also - if I EVER read the word "divoon" again, I'll jump from a bridge and yell freedom.

Reading this was such a waste of time, I can't seriously even begin to describe how fucking angry this "book" made me.

First off, I will say, a huge pet peeve of mine is when books are broken up into volumes. To me, it's just a way to make more money. This book was super short and I'm glad I grabbed it up for free. While I'm interested in where the story goes, I do not want to pay 2.99 for two more 'volumes' when the book could be a full length novel or broken up into 2 full length novels.

Anyhoo, rant over about that. Now about the actual story. I had high hopes for this free book after reading the reviews but honestly I don't see what got people so excited. I feel like barely anything happened in the first book. Alex and Jennifer went out to a couple of events but spent most of the volume not even talking to each other. Then fight over, Jennifer is suddenly his girlfriend. I will say there is zero hanky panky in this - just a couple of kisses and really even those fell flat. I didn't get a lot of chemistry from these two.

Blackwell drove me nuts. Every sentence she would say 'God!' in lieu of punctuation and she has the type of personality that I hate - that beautiful is thin and it isn't cool to 'eat'. I mean, really? The dialogue between the characters seemed to be at rapid fire and yes, we get it, Jennifer is beautiful but doesn't realize it. I don't need every single character telling me how gorgeous she is on every other page. And while I can appreciate fashion, I hate it when the author is spouting off designer names in everything people wear. While I can appreciate you wanting to look good for a job you think you might get, no one drops 3 grand on a Prada suit and designer shoes when they have no money and have common sense. Which apparenly Jennifer does since it was drilled into me that she was smart. And the amount of times I heard about how she's from Maine and that makes her somehow a better and more interesting person was ridiculous.

Maybe I'll read the others if they go up for free too, but I definitely won't be paying $3 each.

For a book that actually has no sex in it whatsoever this book oozes sexuality, tension, nutty characters, colourful characters, great dialogue and a hotting up romance.

I'm so glad I got this book, I was inhaled into the story at the get-go and wow did those 300 pages fly by! Some of the dialogue was a little back to front to me but that only happened sporadically, sometimes for instance the word 'was' in my eyes, placed wrongly in a sentence. I loved the chatty prose between Immaculata and Jennifer, god Jennifer had great comebacks with her. Blackwell - now there's a character and a half! I got dizzy reading her dialogue sometimes but it worked on so many levels, her zest and impatience just dripped off the pages, she's one of those totally annoying and yet totally engaging characters, kinda loved her!

As for Jennifer, how could anyone not engage with her! Her whole personality is flawless, she is neither weak nor meek but she isn't dominant or sassy either. She has a vulnerability about her but her clever mind and her business sense sits perfectly with that vulnerable side. She is probably one of the best heroines I've read in a long time.

Alex, oh boy, dear Alex! He's mysterious, he's thoughtful, he's possessive and he's driven. He also seems pretty ruthless. What's there not to like! Oh yeah, I don't know but I feel he has this element of danger about him and I can't wait to see what happens in book two after where this book was left, which way is his character going to develop, there is suspense and intrigue surrounding him, is he into darker things, or dominance, or none of it but has issues with other things. Arghhhh the suspense is killing me! I just hope vol 2 lives up to vol 1.

I don't think I actually got into this book until about half way. Some bits were good and others just dragged on a bit but overall I quite liked it. I will be reading the next book because I think theres still more to find out about Jennifer, Alex is still a bit of a mystery to me. Will I remember this book by the time the next one is out though? Probably not.

I'm going to write a honest review about this series, because it's about time some did.

First and foremost, the book started strong. Jennifer Kent, armed with an MBA,great looks and smart head on her shoulders, can't catch a break in Manhattan. She's barely making ends meet and is willing to take anything, including an admin assistant job at Wenn Enterprises. Enter Ms. Blackwell. What a hoot. Tough as nails HR bitch and couture fashionista and things that come out of her mouth that will have your side aching from laughter. Their interview is one for the books. Needless to say, it doesn't end well. Enter Alex Wenn. Billionaire on a mission to close big deals in the business world. He needs a companion to keep him on target at the social events and keep the money-hungry women away. Sounds like this book could really work, right? And then in Vol 2-4, there is a nasty plot upon their lives. Intriguing, huh?

You'd be wrong. Because the first plot ends at about chapter 5 and there are still 25 more, along with four other books, and you still don't get the epilogue unless you want to read the Unleash series, which is a shabby copy and paste job of Annilihate Me. It floors me that so many people gave these books 4 and 5 star ratings. I give the first book 2 stats for effort and the next several 1 for wasting my time and pissing me off. Here's why:

CHARACTERS: these characters are as well defined and three dimensional as a blank piece of paper. It's like the difference between the description of the house salad at the local diner vs a five star gourmet restaurant. Seriously. Jennifer starts strong and interesting. A real go getter in the business world. But then she just becomes Alex's arm candy with significant baggage and trust issues. Yeah, sure, she's hot, with a quick mind and a good ability to slay her competition with her tongue but she loses steam FASTER than a car running out of gas. Alex is a billionaire. Yep, and he grins. I really can't tell you what he looks like or what he thinks or what he feels. He is closed off and rarely answers with true emotion. But he writes a love letter that makes me wish Nicolas Sparks was quoted rather than Steinbeck. It was so blasé and stiff that I needed a heating pad to warm my frozen heart and loosen my stiff muscles. Blackwell is a hoot. Quick witted, fast talking and cray-cray. But even she becomes this prattling matron of a fashionista later in the series. Lisa is the best friend with a thing for zombies who lectures Jennifer, albeit lovingly, but I never see the chemistry or fun between besties.

DIALOGUE: what the hell is Christina Ross thinking. People DO NOT talk like this. Stiff, unyielding, AND there is a ton of lazy copy and paste jobs. Word for word to fill pages. And half the time you have to read that crap over again because you can't tell who is talking. With the exception of Blackwell, The voices have no uniqueness.

ROMANCE/SEX: practically non-existent. There are few romantic dates and even fewer overtures. Sexually, To Ross' credit, this is not erotica. I'm not a fan of that. But for a guy who gives a hot speech about not being vanilla when it comes to sex and having a lot of needs in that department, I'd have expected some indication of his style or playfulness or even frequency. Nope. Nada. This isn't even French Vanilla, it's so plain and dull.

PLOT: it's an ever-shifting plot that goes absolutely nowhere and into places that are seriously beyond my ability to suspend disbelief (especially the later volumes). Ross must fancy herself a mystery/romance writer but she is entirely unsuccessful. She attempts to bring in a murder plot that she can't seem to resolve with a character we actually know. And she can't do it in a timely fashion. We know the reason all along but it doesn't do anything to move the story forward or develop the bond between Alex and Jennifer.

OVERALL: This entire series should have been a fast-paced 300-500 page book with an intriguing plot with a real ending. But that would require restraint, which Ross clearly lacks. She is a lazy author who uses copy and paste way too frequently. She takes her time developing (and I use that word lightly) a soap opera length series that never truly ends and by the time you reach the so-called end, you are bored with the characters, dialogue and author. Ross will likely remain a self-published indie author because she clearly cannot stand to be edited. If she were smart enough to get a qualified editor, like her character Lisa does, she could become better. Until then, spare yourself unwanted frustration and boredom. Calgon, take me away. I need it after this piece of crap.

Jennifer Kent and her BFF Lisa Ward have left their home state of Maine to find jobs in New York City. With an MBA in Business it should only be a matter of time before Jennifer lands a high paying job that will catapult her career while Lisa works at becoming the break-out newly discovered best selling author she is destined to become. Four months later with nothing to show except sore feet and an empty bank account Jennifer gives it one last try before admitting defeat by applying for a secretarial position with Wenn Enterprises.

Alexander Wenn, multi-billionaire entrepreneur, is sought after for his wealth and good looks to the point he is having difficulty attending to any of his business interests. When he has a chance meeting with Jennifer, who has no idea who he is, he feels it's fate and hires her to keep rabid gold diggers and lobbists away. Theirs is to be a strictly business relationship without emotional attachments.

Jennifer and Alex have skeletons in their closet as they pose as the perfect power couple to the outside world. It's just a matter of time though before the closet door is opened exposing the deep dark secrets that could either make or break their newly evolving relationship.

There is a reason books featuring an alpha mysterious male meeting single working girl struggling to make ends meet scenario are out there. It works. With the popularity of FSOG and Crossfire, the market for readers looking to read that sort of thing makes it highly advantageous for authors to provide it. So ya, this book/series is definitely slanted to the bad boy multi-billionaire (when did things change from millionaires to billionaires???) seeing vulnerable female deciding she is to be his.

I can't believe I'm going to admit it but I really did like this read. The basic outline does resemble other books out there with similar themes but the author did nitch out variables that went in different directions. The story was told in a first person POV from the heroine's side that did work for me. This is the type of read that needed a degree of mystery and suspence NOT knowing the mind set or rationale from the other characters to appreciate the experience. Sure, some of the story line decisions did have me questioning things but overall for ANYONE looking to find a book/series that have the trilogy flavor this is one I do believe you should grab.

As to the adult content/chemistry between the main characters. One spoiler comment: The total book has a foreplay feel to it. You KNOW they're gonna hook up. You KNOW they're gonna do the nasty. You KNOW it and want it to happen sooner than later. Devious evil author does make the reader wait for it though. And a pivotal reveal about this is pretty much where this book ends. Call it a cliffhanger or a tease. It's there.

My issues with this book are mainly with the fact that the heroine is so strong and dynamic that she overshadowed the hero. I thought Alex should have been much more alpha and aggressively assertive in certain situations that necessitated it which isn't to be confused with him acting like a jerk which he does do. The other glitch for me was the awkward (to me) back history presentation. I had a mental debate with myself on an ongoing basis about this. On the reverse side is the strengths of the secondary characters. Lisa. Totally the sort of BFF I would love to know and have in my own life zombies and all. Ms. Blackwell - get a divorce already won't you. She made a huge impact on my opinion about this book also.

I got this book at a highly reduced price which is the main reason I grabbed it (on sale at Amazon). I started reading it thinking I'd read a chapter a two to get the flavor of it and get to the many many other thins I have going on right now. Nope. Stayed up late into the night to finish. And I'm off to grab the next in series as I'm one who can enjoy reading a book cashing in on the sexy billionaire/working girl slant without worrying about the merits of it's literary excellence.

When this book popped up in my social media feed, I was intrigued and to discover it was free was perfect. No surprise the story was perfect to. This was the 1st story from Christina Ross, I’ve read and I’m certainly looking forward to much more from her. 1st stop on the Ross train will the rest of the Annihilate Me series, I’m a huge billionaire romance fan so that was it’s 1st tick, then came the characters, Alexander and Jennifer were well rounded and written. Thankfully it didn’t finish on a cliffhanger, but I’m more than interested in finishing their love story.

Running from an abusive father, Jennifer has moved to New York. With her MBA in hand she discovers that finding work may be a lot more difficult than she had anticipated. With best friend Lisa , they live in a dodgy apartment and money is running out quickly. With not much other choice, Jennifer applies for a secretarial position at Wenn Industries. Well over qualified, she just needs an income, this may be the ground breaking move she needs for an “in” at the multi million dollar company. What she didn’t expect was Cruella Deville to be the interviewing her. Ms B, is nothing short of a horrible bitch. She attacks Jennifer, and pushes her away, leaving Jennifer angry and upset. She never even hot an opportunity to present her case, her smart mouth probably didn’t help either. Running from the evil woman, she is discovered in the company lift by Alex, their connection is immediate. She spills everything to her mystery man all about the horrible woman upstairs, unbeknownst to her that her stranger is Mr Alex Wenn, CEO of Wenn Industries.

Now Jennifer must search for something else to keep her head above water... But when she gets an offer she can’t refuse from the evil woman from Wren again, this one has a massive paycheck and the ability to be “more” at Wenn. This is perfect, be Mr Wren’s right hand man, long hours, long days. But Jennifer is not afraid of hard work, but she certainly didn’t expect this job. Not only an executive assistant, she will be the partner to all events. This should be easy, until she meets Mr Wenn himself. Shock and disbelief becomes her when the man from the elevator is her new boss.

Having to deal with Blackwell again, grates on Jennifer ‘s nerves, the woman has done a 180° towards her, and obviously due to Alex. They share a past, one that comes to life throughout the story. Spending time /work with Alex is a job. He is to see her as an employee, nothing more. But with expensive dresses, shoes and jewellery, Jennifer is way out if her depth. She doesn’t belong in the society pages, but she is smart, and uses that to disarm all around her. Men check her out, women want to hate her and well Alex.... He us just confusion. After running from abuse, Alex’s Jealousy pushes a button on Jennifer and she freaks out. He scares her and she runs. Walking away from him, the job, the money is the only option. She will not spend time with someone who scares her. She will push on, find something else, what she can’t comprehend is the constant calling her. He won’t give up her, the only woman who has bought him out if his shell. Proof that there is life after devastation. Alexander will stop at nothing to win her back, but not as an employee this time, but a real part of his life. No one says no to Alexander Wenn, but he’s about to meet his maker with Jennifer Kent. She may have a sweet exterior, but inside she has all the fight.

Jennifer and her best friend Lisa have recently moved away from Maine (and Jennifer's abusive parents) to start their life in New York. However, Jennifer seems to be unable to find a job, even with her MBA. In a pinch and quickly running out of money, Jennifer applies for a secretarial position at Wenn Enterprises. There, she meets the outspoken and headstrong Ms. Blackwell and Alex. Alex seems to be all about work and in order to keep the women-wolves at bay, he wants to hire Jennifer to be his fake-girlfriend so he can focus on all the socializing and back-door business deals that happen at fancy dinner parties.

My Opinion:

The plot is like a Harlequin romance, but I think it reads a little better than a Harlequin. It's not a deep novel and don't expect any random BDSM themes to pop up (this is NOT another Fifty Shades), but it's interesting, a bit engaging, and perfect if you just want to pick up something easy that you can get easily lost into.

As a character, I can sympathize and relate to Jennifer, but I find that I never really sympathized with Alex. It's something about the way that Alex seems like man-candy instead of another character with a background, motives, feelings, problems, etc. He kind of seems above it all even though .

Lisa. What can I say about Lisa. I kind of love her. She's like the wise sage that makes sure Jennifer stays on her path to happily ever after, but at the same time she seems like a character that was devised to keep our heroine from ACTUALLY starving, even though they're supposed to be modeled after the hard-working and starving Cinderella-types. Despite that one thing that bugged me, I actually really love Lisa. She seems honest, loyal, and very loving. She lives her life the way she wants to live it and she seems years more mature than Jennifer. Without Lisa, I'm kind of afraid that Jennifer would be in some back alley as a homeless person. (Don't get me wrong, I love Jennifer, but I just worry about her sometimes.)

The only thing that actually bothered me was

As far as all that goes, I think Annihilate Me is a strong 4.5 if you aren't looking for a very deep/life-changing novel. It's a good ENTERTAINING read. I can't wait for book 2.

Final kudos:
Amazing cover-art.

JENNIFER! FINALLY! A girl with backbone!

Smart and it shows. Shocking. Not your typical heroine going around that's described as smart, a+ blah blah blah but judging from their decisions you can't help but feel the urge to bitch slap the hell out of them.

Anyway, honestly speaking, seeing the title of this book, I was all braced for the romping and all the hoopla. Not to mention the guy being a control freak and the stupid girl, helpless. Your typical YA. Yes I was judged. Bite me.

I would give this a 5 stars but you see being this only the Volume 1, their story is a bit sketchy for me. By that, I mean, "so what story". Nothing to really keep me on my toes. But so far, it's all gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood especially with Alex' pheromones in the air. Yum!

I got this as a kindle freebie, so I figured I'd give it a try and if it sucked then oh well. I was pleasantly surprised by how good it really was.

Jennifer is a girl after my own heart. She's smart and knows it. She's gorgeous and doesn't know it. And she's just spunky enough to want to make her your best friend. She had a tough upbringing and it seriously affects her relationships with men. She needs a job like yesterday, and in comes Alexander Wenn with an offer she can't refuse.

Alex is a billionaire (of course he is) and he needs Jennifer to play his girlfriend to keep the hordes of women away from him. He's all work and zero play.

The way Jennifer and Alex meet is very cute. And it just gets better from there. It's a slow buildup for them, even though the initial girlfriend job seems like a whirlwind. It's not an immediate jump into bed book which I totally liked. You have to get past Alex's steel exterior and Jennifer's reluctance towards men, and its definitely a challenge. But so worth the wait.

As for the writing, Christina Ross has great talent. No grammar or editing errors here. And that's a pretty big deal breaker for me sometimes.

This is part of a series and there's no cliffhanger, so thank goodness for that. I'd definitely recommend it, and I think it'll only get better with each book.

Very similar to Fifty Shades. Innocent heroine from meager beginnings with a damaged past meets billionaire boss who has tragedies of his own to overcome. They begin to work together but as second volume unfolds, they start dealing with danger as a threat unfolds.

Really well written, very easy to read, somewhat unoriginal kept thinking been there done that, but reliving Fifty Shades again isn't exactly a hardship ;-) Great sexual chemistry, intelligent root for characters, good supporting cast members, attractive alpha male.

Would recommend! (*Books 1 and 2 out, book 3 out in Sept.)

Only the first part of the story, no spice, but chemistry. Would be interesting to read the rest ... but Alex's actions in that first date were...questionable.

PPFF Rating (for both volumes): 4/5 Stars
Easy read - smart and witty.

"You have a credit card. You haven’t used it since we got here. You saved it for an emergency. Well, this is an emergency. Do you hear me? This is a full-on, five-alarm-fire emergency. You need to have your hair cut and colored. You need to buy a new suit and shoes—and nothing cheap."

A hotshot businessman in need of a fake girlfriend. Enters the perfect eye candy. Turns out she has a brain too. This kind of storyline always reels me in. Nothing is more interesting than a heroine who has beauty, body and brains and actually surprises people in the process. I guess it's the feminist in me talking.

It's always a good idea to squeeze in an easy read in between all those intense New Adult books, don't you think? I should say Annihilate Me is a cute way to unwind and get yourself calmed down after reading too many f***ed up characters.

"Prada fixes everything,” she said. “Or at least, that’s what I hear. Usually, a martini does it for me. But in this case, I’ll listen to the Bible, which naturally is this month’s edition of Vogue. I devoured it last week. Prada’s new line is on trend. Queen Wintour never gets it wrong."

Don't expect anything life changing when you read this but if you're like me who enjoys a good laugh and witty dialogues, then you should be able to love this one too.

The characters are pretty interesting: Jennifer Kent not only has the beauty, body and brains but she also has that sharp tongue of hers which I really love about her. Though she's not typically the strong female type (she keeps saying sorry A LOT even when unnecessary), she is still pretty admirable for her firm beliefs. Lisa Ward has got to be the most dependable best friend and roommate ever with all the things she's done for Jennifer.

Alex Wenn seems to be lacking in terms of his personality. He's a successful billionaire and I'm sure he's supposed to be your typical alpha male but it doesn't really show. There are some signs there but I'm not so convinced. My favorite character though has got to be Ms. Blackwell. Her comments tend to be really bitchy but it doesn't read that way at all. Actually, her punchlines are rather clever.

Here's one:

"Then the undergarments, which must include Spanx. They will even you out nicely, but you might not be able to breathe, which doesn’t matter to me and shouldn’t matter to you."

The writing is more than decent but my main issue is that there are times when I read some of the dialogues, they sound funny in my head. They kind of sound detached from each other, almost like a staccato of short sentences. I'm not exactly sure but that's just me.

"What was that?” he asked quietly.

“The end of Immaculata."

The first volume ended in a cliffhanger. Good thing I read this while volume 2 was out. All in all, I liked it. No-brainer, really.

Problematic characterization: Mary Sue protagonist who protests consistently throughout the story every time someone compliments her beauty, intelligence, and splendid backside. She also suffers from horrible judgement: she buys a $3,000 suit for her job interview when she's broke as a joke, takes a job as a paid escort and thinks it won't be a disaster, then when it turns into a disaster on the very first night (SURPRISE) she eventually forgives him and asks him to take her virginity.

Then there's the alpha male hero, hereafter referred to as Sexy Jerk, who has a tantrum due to jealousy* and intentionally tries to humiliate Mary Sue, and then physically hurts her**. Then, the 2-dimensional secondary characters try to convince her to give Sexy Jerk another chance (WHAT).

1. If she hadn't padded the story with so much irrelevant TL;DR crapola, otherwise known as "tightening one's prose", the story (all 3 parts conjoined to one single tome) would have come in at a tidy 100k and been a more enjoyable and consistent read.

* Even though they have met exactly twice for a total of maybe a half-hour, and are in a professional, non-romantic relationship that they both clearly state and agree to when the job is offered.

** Because she states that another man is handsome and then two other dudes succumb to her amazing hotness (which, again, baffles her) and try to buy her drinks.

This was a great book which caught me completely off guard. Because of the title I was expecting something a lot steamier than what it ended up being, this was a good thing however. The writing drew you into the plight of the characters and made you want to follow along and find out how their lives would turn out. It held my attention from the beginning to the end and had me wishing there were just a few more hours available so I could finish instead of having to wait for the next day. I was very glad to find that volume 1 was a full novel and not just an introduction or a type of serialization. The characters all have great personalities which only adds to the story itself, you get a chance to know something about them and why they act the way they do in situations. I think the language used is appropriate for the character based on their personalities and the way that they are purported to live and to have been educated.

Jennifer and Lisa have moved from Bangor, Maine to New York after graduating college four months ago. Lisa is a budding writer whose first book on Amazon has done very well, she is self-published, and is currently working on her second book. Jennifer graduated with her MBA in business and is hoping to land her dream job so she does not have to return home, but things are looking a bit dismal. After four months of interviews Jennifer is no closer to a job than when they arrived and her money is starting to run out, she hates that Lisa is more or less having to support them both. She has one more interview coming up and hopes that this will be her break, if not she is going to have to come up with another plan.

When she arrives for her interview the woman interviewing her is less than professional, she wants to know why someone with her qualifications would want a secretarial job and dismisses her without a thought. Jennifer is upset and while trying to hold it together in the elevator meets a man pours out her dislike for the interviewer to him thinking she will never see him again. To her surprise she gets called back by the hateful woman for an interview with the owner of Wenn Enterprises. She has no idea what is coming but the job is not what she thinks it is and is going to change her life.

This is more than just an erotic story or even a simple romance story. It’s about two people who have been damaged in ways that neither has been able to deal with alone. This story has moments of fun, glamour, sweetness, sorrow, paranoia, and true friendship. It was a nice beginning in the story of two people from different worlds who are going to try and meld those worlds to create something richer for them both. I would highly recommend this!

Not worth your time.

Not worth your time.

I want to read about a woman that is smart, insecure, silly and confident who can hold her own; not a woman who is classless, clueless and a moron (too many in real life and reading romantic novels is to get away from real life). A woman who has a M.B.A., who cannot find a job should perhaps start to look within herself to see what else might be going on. A woman who is is so smart will at least at the very minimum understand that her upbringing has and will color her life, her judgement and perspective, will try to adjust and be willing to believe, at the very minimum, that she might be wrong. In addition, their is being vain; however, it is completely idiotic, disingenuous and totally lacking in awareness when a person cannot comprehend that she is at least attractive. And when placed in this particular situation, she rises to the top and becomes the woman who has all the answers and moves. Did not buy it, did not buy the attraction and did not buy or enjoy the story. Imagine telling this person(moron) about your wife, who at this point of the story, seemed to be very important in your life, when said moron was on her high horse and would not speak to you after a misunderstanding.....really? Really?

Perhaps it is the way that the author has chosen to tell this story in short novellas that is the problem...I do not know. What I do know is that I did not enjoy any aspect of this novella. I am so glad that I did not directly pay to read this book...I would be seriously pissed and would ask for a refund. I read this book as part of Amazon's new subscription service and all I have to do is return it. It is not worthy of my time or allotment of books.

I'm not even sure where to start with this "book".  After getting it for free on Amazon, I read the reviews here and on their site. Needless to say, the negative reviews seemed to rip this "book" a new one. My curiosity was piqued so I moved it to the front of the TBR pile.

The annoying parade of characters constantly waxing poetic about Jennifer's ravishing beauty was the first thing that hit me but I'd been warned. The story was ok until I kept feeling like I'd read this story before. I was halfway through when I realized that it was reminding me of The Fixed Trilogy by Laurelin Page. Both stories have a seemingly naive young woman that has just finished her business degree when she is offered a job by some uber rich guy to be his girlfriend just for the cameras.  There are more simarities and if you are familiar with Page's trilogy, you may spot them as well.

Another issue that I had was with a couple of characters they met/mentioned at an event. The characters Tootie Staunton-Miller, Addison (or Addy) Miller, and Anastassios Fondaras all appear in Fifth Avenue by Christopher Smith. I really hope that there is some connection between the two authors and that these characters weren't just blatantly stolen.

Other than that, the story was ok. Not great, but ok. I'm curious to find out what other problems Jennifer and Alex encounter but I may have to wait. Until I find out more about how the Fifth Avenue characters came to make a cameo in this book I do not think I can continue to support this author.
