Η Βενετία είναι από τις αγαπημένες μου πόλεις, όχι όμως αυτή που βουλιάζει από τον κόσμο των τουριστών, από τις δραστηριότητες των περιστεριών και των αρουραίων, από την κλιματική αλλαγή. Μου αρέσει η Βενετία του κρύου που ωθεί τον κόσμο να χωθεί στα καφέ της πλατείας του Αγίου Μάρκου, του χιονιού που συσσωρεύεται πάνω στις στέγες των πολύχρωμων, παραμυθένιων σπιτιών της λιμνοθάλασσας, του ρόδινου φωτός από τους φανοστάτες πάνω από τα κανάλια, του μισοβυθισμένου βιβλιοπωλείου Acqua Alta που τα πολύτιμα βιβλία του (ένα προϊόν τόσο ευάλωτο στο νερό) κείτονται σε καλάθια και λεκάνες προετοιμασμένα για έκτακτες, μικρές κρουαζιέρες παρέα με τις γάτες.
Αυτό το βιβλίο τα έχει όλα αυτά. Μη γελιέστε ότι είναι απλώς ένα παιδικό βιβλίο για μια ξακουστή πόλη. Έχει αυτή τη δροσιά και την απλότητα που υπαγορεύονται από την παιδική λογοτεχνία και υποδέχεται τον αναγνώστη με συντροφική θέρμη, αλλά δεν μένει εκεί. Δεν έχει γλυκανάλατη και δήθεν παραμυθένια πλοκή. Τα απαλά ζωγραφισμένα με μολύβι σχέδια με τις εικόνες της πόλης συλλαμβάνουν τέλεια την μυστηριακή ομίχλη της βενετσιάνικης ατμόσφαιρας. Οι χαρακτήρες επίσης, είναι αξιαγάπητοι με πρώτη και κυριότερη την Μίστικα Μαέβα του τίτλου του βιβλίου για να ακολουθήσει ο Μπαΐκολο, ο κεραμιδόγατος και όλοι οι υπόλοιποι, τόσο ξεχωριστοί ο καθένας με τον τρόπο του. Η περιπλάνηση στην Βενετία σε αναζήτηση ενός μυστικού, η όμορφα απλή γραφή που ρέει αποκαλύπτοντας εδώ κι εκεί τα γοητευτικά μυστικά περάσματα και κρυφά σημεία της επιπλέουσας πόλης.
Απόλαυσα κάθε λέξη αυτού του κουκλίστικου βιβλίου και ευχήθηκα να υπήρχε κι άλλο, να υπήρχε μια ιστορία για μεγάλους μέσα σε αυτό το παραμυθένιο ταξίδι και να γινόταν μια επετειακή, πολυτελής έκδοση, απόλυτα ταιριαστή σ' αυτή την τόσο παροδικά αιώνια πόλη της Βενετίας.
Venice is one of my favorite cities, but not the one that sinks because of the mass of tourists, because of the activities of pigeons and rats, because of the climate change. I like the winter Venice whose wind-chill forces people into the cafes of Piazza San Marco, the snow that gathers on the roofs of the colorful, fairytale lagoon houses, the pink light from the lampposts above the canals, the half-submerged bookshop Acqua Alta whose valuable books (a product so vulnerable to water) lie in baskets and basins prepared for extraordinary, small cruises with the company of cats.
This book has it all. Don't think that it's just a children's book about a famous city. It has this freshness and simplicity dictated by children's literature and welcomes the reader with warmth, but it doesn't stay there. It has no soppy and fairytale plot. The gently drawn pencil drawings with the images of the city capture perfectly the mysterious mist of the Venetian atmosphere. The characters are also lovable, with first of all Mistika Maeva of the book title, with next one Baikolo, the stray cat, and all the others, each so special in his way. The adventure in Venice in search of a secret, the beautifully simple writing that flows revealing here and there the charming hidden passages and obscured places of the floating city.
I enjoyed every word of this lovely little book and I wished there was more. I wished to be another story for adults in this fairytale journey and to have an anniversary, luxurious edition, perfectly suited to this so the ephemerally eternal city of Venice.
