USA Today bestselling author Cheryl Holt wanted to free herself from all restraint and write a novel exploring the darkest, most secret reaches of the erotic imagination So she created the alter-ego Vanessa Marlow, and the novel she wrote is… Sleeping With The Devil
Meg White leads a comfortable life as a chef in Portland. Nothing prepared her for a man like Jordan Blair, the rich, magnetic stranger who seduces her and introduces her to a life of luxury--and sin. Obsessed with Jordan and drawn to his dark sexual kinks, Meg allows him to transform her into a sophisticated beauty with no ties to her past. But soon she's trapped in a web of lust and sexual depravity. She doesn't know whether the man who's consumed her life is good or evil, whether her nights are filled with pleasure or pain--or how she'll ever survive.
Meg White and her boyfriend Steve were enjoying their anniversary when they met Jordan Blair. Instantly, Meg is uneasy about Jordan and his cool, possessive stare unnerves her. She's amazed that someone so handsome and sophisticated would be interested in little ol plain her. She's nothing special but Jordan makes her feel like she's the most amazing woman on earth and when he steals her away from Steve, she follows only too happily. He showers her with attention and gifts and his sexual appetite for her is insatiable. It's as if he can't sate himself enough on her flesh, as if he can't brand himself deep enough in her body. At first, Meg luxuriates in his lifestyle, enjoying everything he has to offer but it quickly goes wrong. It started with simple requests and gentle coaxing, a change of hairstyle or a suggestion about a dress. Before she understands what is happening, Jordan has completely taken over her life. Everything he does is a manipulative step that will place her further and further under his control. Meg at first fears for her personal identity, her sanity and then her life. When Jordan begins to tire of his games and ultimately her, Meg desperately tries to claw herself out of her stupor. What follows is the most evil game of cat and mouse ever construed and Meg's frantic bid for survival.
After I read Sleeping with the Devil, I really had to ask myself why I read it. This was seriously one of the most disturbing books I have ever read. There are no sexual kinks to explore and be titillated by in this book and this is not an erotic or sensuous read as the synopsis would suggest. The sex that occurs in this book was clearly used to punish and to destroy. The antagonist Jordan Blair was one of the most deranged, socipathic, evil characters I have ever read about and he tortures and destroys Meg White for no other reason than the fact he enjoyed it. He sadistically and systematically strips her of her sense of self and molds her into his ideal woman, an emaciated blonde. He's beyond sick. He's evil. He will give you nightmares.
Reading about Meg's downward descent into hell was so disturbing, yet I was completely fascinated. Vanessa Marlow (or Cheryl Holt) has created a unique and compelling character in both Jordan and Meg. While the story is told entirely from Meg's point of view, the glimpses that Meg gets of Jordan's psyche is for lack of a better word, fascinating. I literally couldn't put the book down and after I was finished, I had to grab my safe and sane husband for a comforting hug. To know that there are possibly men or women out there like Jordan gave me chills and this book left me feeling sick to my stomach. At first, everything that Jordan does, Meg allows. He picked his victim well, for she's too submissive and too naive to comprehend what he wants from her. You are going to be horrified by her seeming acceptance and stubborn denial of the situation, your going to will her to run, and you root for her when she does fights back, even when all it does is make it worse. While we are given small glimpses as to why Jordan gleefully ruins her, this is all about Meg and her slow descent and then her desperate struggle to bring herself back from the dead.
While it was very, very, very hard to read, Sleeping With The Devil was extremely well written and a finely crafted foray into one woman's hell and the monster who put her there. Read at your own risk.
This was a very good erotic thriller. Meg White and her boyfriend Steve are on vacation when they meet Jordan Blair. He is handsome , very rich but also very manipulative. Meg feels uncomfortable around him but she cannot stay away. After she marries him Jordan takes over her life. He determines what she wears, when and what she eats and starts to drug her. This book had me enthralled from the beginning. The things Jordan does to Meg were at times very disturbing and I could not wait to the end of the book to see if she finally can escape him.
This is nothing like what I have ever read before. The characters are complex and believable, especially when it came to Jordan, our male lead. You can tell he is the one who has absolute control over the relationship. Controlling, obsessive, abusive (to an extent), he is one lover you do not want to mess with.
This erotic romance thriller is not something you want to miss. B/c I admit, I really enjoyed reading Meg’s story. I did not give a 5-star b/c there were still somethings I would have liked to have seen done differently. I think the ending could have gone differently, meaning I think it could have been better.
And second I wish we could have gotten to know more about Jordan’s past, you get little pieces of it and sort of understand why he does what he does, but there still wasn’t a lot to go on. B/c the way Jordan is though, I could pretty much guess his upbringing, so it wasn’t too bad. Meg and Jordan’s relationship is pretty intense from the start. Something’s off on how they first meet, but I think Jordan had been watching her for a while.
Meg. What can I say about her? She is very skeptical of Jordan and doesn’t understand his interest with her, he’s wealthy, has the looks, so what does she want with her? But Meg’s life isn’t going so great, she’s bored, want’s something new in her life. So when Jordan comes along, at first she protests but it doesn’t take long for her to fall into his arms when he just happens to pop up everywhere. Falling for Jordan had been her worst mistake, with money and fame to back up; Meg has nowhere to run when things turn for the worst. Marlow aka Holt, did a wonderful job. I heard this novel was a break away from her usual norm, though I can’t compare, I like her already from this novel. Eh, but read and find out for youself.
I am usually quite partial to this author and I was excited to read something different from her regency romances. I expected this to be a dark erotic thriller and I love those types, but this book just didn't do it for me. I spent most of the time while reading intensely disliking Meg. What made it worse was I disliked her even more so than the villain Jordan. Since the book is only from Meg's perspective, it was hard to keep reading the book when I didn't like her from the very start. I also didn't like the abrupt ending with no follow through with how Meg moved on from her experience. I would have liked to know how she adapted back to life after Jordan's demise. Overall it is hard for me to give a Cheryl Holt book less than 4 stars, but this one just didn't have the right stuff for me.

Wow. This book. Not a Romance. Jordan is a psyco and meg bless her heart is a bit of an idiot at times. There was more than one occasion when I was screaming at the to leave. We do odd things when we think we are in love. A very intense look at an abusive relationship however it takes a while for the abuse to really show itself.
Meg and Steve are on an ordinary vacation. But the whole time its raining, so when there is a break in the rain they leave the apartment. Meg and Steve go out to eat but no one as at the restuarant. After a while they see a couple enter; they are like wow they look so cool they must be rich. Meg goes to the bathroom and bumps into the man, he introduces himself as Jordan Blair. Jordan starts coming on to her but she escapes to the bathroom. When Meg comes back she finds Steve at the couple's table talking to the pretty lady that introduces herself as Kimberly. Jordan and Kimberly invite Steve and Meg to their house to spend time in his hot tub. So Meg accepts the invitation but she doesn't really want to go. While there Kimberly being all so nice tells them to make theirselves at home and get swimming gear. Steve is all hopped up on wanting to get in the hottub so he puts on swimming trunks and tells Meg to hurry up and get dressed. She does get ready grudgingly to find Kimberly to close to Steve naked. They were both naked and they told Meg to do the same after she got their drinks for them. After a while Meg got mad and wanted to leave but Steve said no. So Meg went to watch a movie but she bumpt into Jordan. Meg asked him "what do you want from me" to which he responds " I want to fuck you". Meg pushed him away after that; so while watching the movie she fell asleep. When she woke up she went to find Steve only to find him fucking Kimberly from behind. Meg was going to scream at him but then she looked up at Jordan and he told her to be quiet. Jordan got up and walked towards her and told her how Steve was bragging about fucking other woman on his fake buisness trip. So Jordan pulled her into a room and did the same thing that Kimberly was doing to Steve. After the night was over she left Steve's sorry ass in their house and went home without him. Steve eventually got home hitchhiking. When Steve got there he begged Meg not to leave him and so she didn't because she is push over. But when Meg went back to work she wasn't to stay long because along with her boss and friend Pam they were to go on a trip to see potential places where Pam could build more of her famous restuarants. While there Meg met up with Jordan Blair again and he had the gal to invite her over to his sweet so they could have sex only she didn't go to him. Instead Jordan went to her and they had the most amazing time having sex. From then on they stayed and did all kinds of crazy stuff having to do with his favorite subject sex. After the vacation was over they eventually moved in together after Meg had broken up with Steve. Meg was having the time of their life but she started to go to work late and didn't hang out as much with her friends. Jordan was being unreasonable with her so she just went with whatever he said. Until Meg started to show up to work with bruises on her body. Pam had a talk with her about that, and that is when Meg told her that she quit. Meg marries Jordan and take a honeymoon trip to the house where Steve was doing Kimberly. After that they came back to their pent house. Jordan got carried away for the next few months until her body was a big jiant bruis. Then Jordan cornerd her at the edge of a cliff and tried to rape her but she had enough I guess so she pushed Jordan off the ledge. The police came and it was a big production and Meg had to figure out what to do if the autopsy came up with something else on her husbands body. From there she didn't know what she was going to do but now she has money so who knows what Meg will do.
My first impression of this book from reading the summary was that is was going to be an intense and sexual erotica to read. While the sex at times tended to be kinky and unnerving at times, the overall dominance of Jordan was downright appalling.
I have never been squeamish about reading an erotica novel. Heck, the more sexy fun in a romance the better because I am an adult and can handle reading about it. When you venture into the realm of Jordan Blair though, be prepared to enter a dark and violent life. Jordan was a horrible but attractive man. He wanted things done a certain way and you had better listen to him. He wasn't above punishing the women if they didn't do as he asked. That's fine when you are reading am erotic book, but the way he went about it was just stomach turning. He whipped her with a belt for no reason at all except for voicing her feelings to him. He would drug her and make her do things that she never wanted to do including sex with strangers and having it all videotaped. When she calls her ex boyfriend to rescue her though, Jordan takes it a step further and kills the man just so Meg will have to stay with him. The whole time Meg is suffering through all of this, Jordan convinces others that she is losing her mind and needs to be committed.
I was not a fan of this book. I almost didn't want to finish this story due to the violence and sexual acts that Jordan puts Meg through. This book is definitely not for the squeamish readers. If you want to step into a suspenseful erotica were the relationship is based on sex, violence and women degradation, then this is that book. I unfortunately will never pick this book up again.
This story is really interesting. Jordan, the protagonist's lover, is really obsessed and clearly has a complex of some sort because he takes control of everything in Meg's life. I can only hope that no one will have to deal with something as extreme as this.
The relationship is really intense and any reader going into this should keep in mind that this isn't a true romance... at least that's my opinion. It's rough. The story takes Meg through a whole lot of terrible things. I understand that the author wants me to feel exhausted for her, but I could only take so much as I was reading it. That's why I gave it only four stars as opposed to five. Every time the heroine got ahead, Jordan brought her back down again, and it continues like this for a good portion of the novel.
Don't get me wrong, this story was wonderfully written. I had no trouble understanding the text. Several words became favorites of the author for she repeated them several times, but other than that it was a quick read that brought you into the trapped life of Meg White.
The verdict: Try renting it from the library first. The references to torture and the brutality of some situations will not appeal to the general audience.
I suspect this is one of those books that's either loved or hated. I liked it but I don't read it thinking it's an erotic romance. I'm not sure it's even a novel of sexual obsession. It wasn't really about the sex. It was about control and power. It's far more of a dark psychological suspense story than anything else. As a tale of the ultimate control freak, it's frighteningly intense. I wish wish wish we could have had some of the book inside Jordan's head. It was hard watching Meg spiral down relentlessly. You wanted to shake her and tell her to get out while she could which shows the strength of the writing. But if you're looking for a sexy book - this isn't it unless you get off on violent, aggressive behaviour with no redeeming features for Jordan. Not one. I was a bit disappointed with the end, I'd have liked to have seen a little more of Meg's journey but it did end HFN.
Meg and Steve were having there anniversary at a restaurant when a rich couple conversate with them and invite them to their hot tub.Meg is too aware of his too cool nature and is frightned by it. After going out with them continously Jordan tells her that Steve is a cheater. she finds this out when i forgot the chicks name is giving him a blowjob in the living room. after she forgives him for it she all too happy leav3s him for Jordan. First her live is utmost enjoyable. When he makes suggestions there little like what looks betteron her or a simple jewelry choice. But the more they come together the more aggresive and demanding he gets.He is a sociopath nad he gave me nightmares. Out of every book I have read this is the most disturbing.
I was very surprised with this book. I thought it would be all erotica. to my shock it wasn't much at all.. sleeping with the devil was more a thriller in my eyes with erotica scenes. I loved the story the the suspense. but I found that the author was repeating herself a lot; especially when it came to the character meg. I did start to scim thru it towards the end. knowing what was going to happen and just wanted to finish the book. that is why I gave it a 3 star.
This book was a train wreck from the beginning. Only problem that would be in a good way! I have never been so abducted into a world than I was with this book. From beginning to end you screamed at the girl till you were horse. I have also never read a book so quickly than I did with this one. If you are at a loss for reading material this is a book to check out.
I felt dirty reading this because it's just so wrong and sickening in so many levels. And yet, I find it addictive because it was like nothing I've ever read before. I guess the story is not for everybody.
A strangely hypnotic story. Cheryl Holt has entered a new arena with this book written as Vanessa Marlow. The story of Meg's fall was hard to read, but harder to put down. Holly's review says it all.
This book. Hmm, this book. At first it held my attention. I don't really know what I was expecting from it. I lied. I was expecting more of a hopeless love story. I wasn't expecting murder and kidnapping-esq. this is what i get for not researching before I buy, and just impulse grabbing.

This was a very very dark book. I've read it twice now, which is why I put 4 stars. I won't read it for another year or so, but I would probably read it again. It's difficult to put down.
