What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas...

For poker star Vice Jackson, growing up in the City of Sin wasn't easy. With a childhood filled with an alcoholic mother, strange men in his living room, drugs, and endless nights on the strip, he meets his best friend Skip who turned his life around in one single afternoon. Skip brought Vice to be the hottest tattoo artist in all of Vegas. From the big money poker tourney's, all the sexy woman he could ever want, and a promising future at Mad Tatter, Vice was living the dream.

Slowly, it all shatters, leaving Vice being harassed by Vegas high roller and drug dealer Chase Miller. Vice does his best to stay away from Chase as he knows that he is nothing but trouble. All the while letting the girl of his dreams -Harlow Jean- into his life. She is beautiful, down-to-earth, with a heart of gold, though she has been keeping a secret from Vice. A secret that moves the earth from beneath his feet.

With every turn Vice Jackson takes, he realizes that with every choice he makes... there are consequences. Consequences that change his life, forever. Regardless... he's 'all in'.

Yep, I gave this book 2 stars - "it was ok". The story wasn't bad. I even liked the characters for the most part, but there were a few things that bugged me and kept me from being able to give it any more.

For starters, I'd have like to have known what Chase's issue with Vice was. I kept expecting some connection from before Vice cleaned up his act that caused the grudge, or maybe something concerning Vice's mom that Chase was angry about. It would have been simple enough to work a reason into this story.

Next, there was a scene (just before the halfway point in the book I think) with Chase and Vice in a poker tournament with a third guy. A guy with a mustache lays down his cards and announces that he has a full house. Then Chase says, "Straight flush, baby" shows his cards and says, "Two aces and three three's. You're done mustache stud, woo!". Vice then laid down his cards and says, "Same. Straight flush, two aces and three three's." Except, two aces and three three's is NOT a straight flush, it's a full house. It's just frustrating. When something like poker plays a sizable role as it did in this book, it needs to be done right. I had to read that part a couple times to figure out that it wasn't me misunderstanding, but rather that it was written wrong.

I was also a bit bugged by the misuse and overuse of words and phrases.
Things like the use of the word indefinitely when I'm fairly certain it was supposed to be definitely. "..it would indefinitely be embarrassing"/"Indefinitely, I will crush him."/"..we were indefinitely a mess".
Or how many times the characters claimed they "died a little" (or for the second or third time in a day/minute) was annoying.

All in all, if someone took the time to go over the book and change a few things and fix some errors, it wouldn't be a bad book. It's a good idea, just needs some work.

One thing I did absolutely love, is the name Harlow. Very cool.

3.5 I'm not even sure where to start with this one. It was good. In fact I was drawn into this story right away. I loved Vice and Harlow. I such a sucker for tattoo's and tattoo shops. Add in some gambling and yeah you have my attention.

Here is the thing that was weird and was never explained was Chase's obsession with Vice. I say obsession because he went to great lengths to get him to come to his club. Chase had taken a train to crazy land and by the end you know why he was crazy. But not why he was after Vice. I mean why go to all that trouble? I just dint get it.

I tried to like this book, I really did, and I hate rating things low, but...

There were just too many issues for me, the biggest one being that there was no real reason for Chase to go after Vice the way he did. Okay, so he's disgruntled that Vice won't play him at his own casino, but is that really a reason to relentlessly harass him in a WAY over-the-top fashion? No. Sorry, but no. I need a real reason for something so extreme... a connection or a vendetta or SOMETHING.

Also, it just seemed like most of the story was being told to me instead of taking me through it, and that just bothers me. Vice went into a memory in the middle of a memory, and I got so lost that it took a while to realize we were 'live' again.

Another issue is the misuse of words. Allowed instead of aloud, indefinitely used wrong, etc. And lastly, I just didn't buy the poker player thing, and it just seemed to be thrown in there. Hey, I'm a kick-ass tat artist and OH, by the way, I kick ass at poker too.

I'm sad. I was rooting for this story, but I just couldn't get there. :(

Vice is a young tattoo artist who has an on-going private battle with a casino owner who can't handle losing. He meets Harlow while working at his tattoo shop. It takes four years for sparks to fly but once they do its a never ending display. This story has love, hate and action.
I really wanted to give this book 4 stars at the end but it was really difficult to get into it. After about 35% it went fast, though before hand, I had to force a page or two a day. A few parts were very cliche and lame. I think the book would have been better if the author gave us more of Vices life to start with or else skipped the shallow introduction.
Overall, the plot was good, the characters grow on you and it ends with a few surprises.

I really liked this book bit there were a lot of editing errors and I never really understood Chase's obsession with Vice. I was waiting for some dramatic reason for it that involved Vice.
