There are plenty of books on juicing out there, but The Juice Generation is probably the most beautiful and accessible that I've read so far. The layout is what really sets this book apart from others as the nutritional information is presented in a clear way without the reader feeling bogged down with facts, as is the tendency with writings on this subject. The author eases you into the world of juicing by breaking it up into a plan of three phases. The first phase introduces you to easy recipes with familiar fruits and veggies an even includes choices to make with your blender if you haven't committed to buying a juicer yet. Each subsequent phase adds in more produce and supplements and leads you up to juice cleanses when you're ready.
The pictures throughout are gorgeous and there are also testimonials from avid juicers. The only drawback for me was the namedropping of celebrities, but it didn't detract that much from the text. The Juice Generation will definitely reside in my healthy eating library.
I don't "juice" and only occasionally make smoothies but I'm curious. In addition to advice about blending versus juicing and tips for buying a juicer, includes some handy tips, like how to make your own vegetable wash, how to wash vegetables more sustainably, etcetera. Different focus than I expected; while there are quite a few recipes, a large part of the book concerns the "lifestyle" of juicing. The introduction to becoming a full-fledged juicer is introduced in three phases and a three day cleanse is outlined.
Review copy provided by publisher through Edelweiss.
I have read very few juice books and although I drink a juice protein drink every day i am relatively unfamiliar with the genre. This book opened my eyes to the many approaches to drinking vitality and nutrition. The exposition is clear and informative and the recipes cover centralized topics and ingredients. I found it informative and well produced. Great book.
The biggest drawback of this book is that there is No Appendix! I suggest starting with a different book with more straightforward guidance. I use this as a pretty, inspiring “ideas” book.
Are you part of the juice generation? Up until this point in my life the answer to that question would be an astounding no. Then I requested The Juice Generation: 100 Recipes for Fresh Juices and Superfood Smoothies.
In this book, there is a wealth of information that can make even the most skeptical person (me) see that there are real positive benefits to being part of the juice loving world. There is nutritional value in drinking juices and smoothies that can help your health. Depending on the types of foods within your beverage, there are different benefits.
There are recipes that anyone can make and there are a lot of them. No matter what your taste, you will be sure to find a group of juices and smoothies that will help you get to all of the “phases” outlined for you in the book. Because the author realizes that people need to adjust to the tastes of these juices, he breaks it down into the Green Curve. Basically, the Green Curve is a tiered way to bring you to a place where you will have have a “green” juice everyday.
So what are you waiting for? Just open up that pages, make your grocery list, and you are halfway there. I absolutely love this book and would recommend it for anyone who is starting out in the juice world.
Features a wide variety of simple juice recipes. Colorful photos and easy to follow instructions. I also like the advice and information about what to expect when juicing.
However, to juice effectively, you will need the proper equipment to extract and create the concoctions. This may be a problem for someone like me who has a limited budget. Spending $100 for a blender and juicer just won't work for me right now. I will definitely purchase this book when I have the funds to buy a high powered blender, juicer, and various other items he suggests.
Lost me when the author said grapefruit peel is toxic. Umm, no - you may not want to eat it because of the pesticides sprayed on it, but that's true for any non-organic fruit. Made me question the accuracy of the other info in the book. Also, could have done without the numerous self-promotions of the juice store & the quotes from famous actors - we already know they juice. The recipes were okay, but got lost among the rest of the extraneous stuff.
Aside from the considerable name-dropping, this book far exceeded my expectations. This is an essential on everything juice. Info on when, how, why, what to juice, and of course the recipes (of some juices from the shop). Even includes recipes and tips for smoothies, acai bowls, nut-milks, and juice shots. Lots of information presented in a clear and inviting way. I'm very happy I bought this book.
This book has been wonderful to read! I've gotten to read it twice, thanks to both Edelweiss and NetGalley and loved it both times. It's inspired me to start drinking green smoothies again and to start using my juicer again. The photos are beautiful and colorful and the recipes (that I've tried) are delicious!
This beautiful book is as fresh, light and energizing as the recipes inside it. Far more than a "cookbook," Helms offers lots of nutritional insight, and healthy living tips. Read it cover to cover and slowly making my way through all the tantalizing concoctions.
Have enjoyed the recipes I've tried so far and the book is full of gorgeous photos. From time to time the small text over the photographs was hard for this forty year old to read ;-) but overall I'm enjoying this book and reach for it often in the kitchen.
Lots of great, healthy tips. I felt healthier just reading this book. Doing a juice fast and this book helped me keep it up rather than quitting part way through.
Do you know anyone who eats the amount of vegtables per day that we are supposed to? Juicing would be a great way to get your diet whipped into shape. I'm sold.
