Nothing's Missing Now

Rate this book
Dear Author,
My name’s Liam and I’m sure you’ve noticed that I’m missing a leg. That hasn’t stopped me though, well, maybe it did for a little while. But he’s (yup, I said he...shocking right?!) here in my life now and not letting me give up.

Photo Description:
Model and former Marine Alex Minsky poses in red briefs while holding a rolled-up white towel behind his shoulders. Most notable are his tattoos and the fact he wears a blade prosthesis on his right leg.

This story was written as a part of the M/M Romance Group's "Love Has No Boundaries" event. Group members were asked to write a story prompt inspired by a photo of their choice. Authors of the group selected a photo and prompt that spoke to them and wrote a short story.

I might be an escaped con or a former sheriff's deputy. Once I was a chef...or was that a chief? It's entirely possible I'm a used car salesman or an insurance agent. Go-go boy, I might have done that...recently. Then there were the years as either a waiter, dog-walker or bike messenger, but I don't like to talk about them. I might be a carpenter and singer and, though I don't have a sex tape available anymore, I'm definitely gay now. Oh! Occasionally, I write a thing or two.

Nothing happens.

no drama, no tension, no conflict.

everyone is perfectly loving and understanding.

that's pretty much a hanging offense as far as fiction is concerned—if there is no antagonism, there is no protagonist, ipso facto, thanks for playing, here's a list of ingradients I got off a can of matzoh ball soup.

which would be more interesting.

if there's nobody to root against, in other words, you have no reason to root for anyone.

if there's nothing standing in the hero's way, nothing preventing him from getting what he wants... why the hell would you care what happens to him?

and it's a shame, because there's the occasional really-nicely-turned phrase to indicate the talent's there. wouldn't hesitate at all to give this author another shot.

but there's no story, here.

never mind the remarkable characterization of a tattooed-former-model-cum-blow'd-up-marine as a man who inexplicably suffers the same inane sexual neuroses as a 13yo Jesuit.

example? here.

bedtime stories have more drama than that.

Today's LHNB story, and what a heartwarming one it was. A touching and tender tale of PTSD sufferer Liam and Ray, a big bear of a man, who doesn't care one jot that Liam is missing a leg, has awful scarring (resulting from an IED explosion) and pretty dreadful flashbacks...he just wants to love Liam for himself, warts and all. Loved it, great prompt and a wonderful story Westbrooke, many thanks. 4.5 stars and

Wow, this is one of those shorts that just goes to prove that some stories, even when they are so short and only cover a small timeframe still tell a whole and meaningful story.
Liam, recovering from horrific, life changing physical and emotional war wounds.
Ray, the man who loves him.
I could say so much more, but I won't, everyone should just read it and then if you're like me..sigh, smile and reread.
And I just have to say, this one needs to be expanded.

I so needed this story after a sort of shitty day. :)

It was cute, heartfelt and sweet but not overly. I enjoyed both MC, Ray and Liam. Ray is definitely in the perfect man category. I can't really find much wrong with this. Maybe the MANTEARS but Liam's entitled to them.

A short story, but there's plenty here to like.

I wanted more, but then when something is this good that's automatic. It would have been nice to see/learn how they met, but everything that needed to be said and showed is here. Strong well written characters and a whole lot of love.

The ending is perfect; comfortable humour with a big dollop of awwww.

So much soft, decadent peace

Another wonderful LHNB short story. It's about Liam, who lost his leg in combat and Ray, who loves his Liam regardless of his disability. Sweet and cute story. :)

Very cute story about Liam who has lost a leg during combat and Ray loving him regardless.

"Liam, I don't care about a missing leg or bunch of scars. I don't need you in pristine condition. I just want you."

This story isn’t just cute, sweet, and hot, it also takes the level of warmth up another notch. The emotional intensity of an ex-Marine who has lost one leg and is just now finding a way to live and be loved again is great, as is the realism of what it can mean to suffer from PTSD. The emphasis is on the dealing with it though, not as much the suffering. And in that sense, this is also a book with a message of hope. Recovering from heavy physical trauma will be different for everyone, but just seeing one case end well is a wonderful thing.

Ex-Marine Liam has gone through a really rough patch. A bomb took most of his right leg, he had other wounds to deal with as well, and got into real trouble during the recovery when he started drinking. The first step, remaining sober, has been taken, and he is now about to take the next, with his prospective boyfriend, Ray. Liam is nervous, scared, and very uneasy about the idea of having Ray meet his parents, but Ray doesn’t leave him much choice. Not that Liam really minds, but he cannot help but be a little apprehensive.

Ray is a wonderful man. He clearly has Liam pegged, and understands that he'll need to push a little if he wants to move their relationship to the next level. Liam just isn’t self-confident enough (yet) to take action, so Ray does. He is brilliant about it. There is no pity, just love, understanding, and wanting to help when needed. The thunderstorm (which reminds Liam of explosions) and how Ray steps up and supports Liam through it is a great scene and basically says it all.

If you like stories about men dealing with physical disability and mentally readjusting their lives, if you enjoy reading stories where the lovers are really there for each other, and if you're looking for an emotional, warm read that will give you hope, then you will probably like this free short story.

Loved it. Just loved it. This short story may encompass just a single day but there's so much packed in there. You can feel the emotions and the fear Liam has. Ray? I wish everyone had one of him.

Reread shows I still love it

I thought the man on the photo embodied tenacity and so I was curious about his story. As I read it, the feeling that felt strongest was one of nurturing. I loved this story, Liam, and Ray. Liam no doubt has a great support system in his family, but I loved Ray's warm personality. His admiration for Liam, his gentle regard, and playfulness just melted me.

“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word,a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.”
― Leo F. Buscaglia

Threw this quote in here because it sort of pegged the emotion that I felt about Ray and Liam.

This was a wonderful heartwarming story of a soldier home from the war suffering from PTSD and missing part of his leg. He has been seeing a wonderful fuzzy bear of a man who wants nothing more then to love him and be there for him. This pulled at my heart strings and made me warm and fuzzy all over!! OMG how I loved this story!!

I want more of these two!!

A very human short story of a former marine, suffering from the loss of a lower limb and PTSD coming to terms with the fact that he can be loved and love in return despite his physical and mental injuries.

This was a cute, quick read, very sweet. I liked Ray, a big teddy bear of a guy. The hurt/comfort aspect of the story was sweet. I would have liked to have seen how Ray and Liam met, even if only in a flashback, but I enjoyed the story. Thank you!

Very nice! No perfect MC but the author dealt with it in a proper and very normal way. I would have liked to know the beginning of their relationship or did I miss it?

This was an amazing little story between Liam, a war-damaged hero suffering from PTSD, and his funny, endearing, charming, bear of a boyfriend, Ray. Ms. Jameson's story was a wonderful hurt/comfort read with incredible MCs and some of the most entertaining and epic passages I've read.
With his voice gruff from sleep, Ray asked, "Are two trees enough to count as a forest of morning wood?"
Liam snorted, then chuckled. He squeezed his eyes, but nope, the mental image of a forest of giant, erect cocks didn't vanish. He laughed more when he imagined himself running naked thought all those "trees" looking for the perfect one to climb.
NSFW!
XD
Liam grinned. "Nice sweater."
"Hey, just because you're practically bald..." He tugged on the fuzz between Liam's pecs.
Liam batted Ray's hand away. "I like the sweater look, Raymond."

I almost passed on this story when I saw "bears" as one of the tags (my mind automatically went to cheezy 80's porn) but I'm glad I didn't. Though only 26 pages, this little read still had all of the elements I like in a story....conflict/angst, some sort of resolution, romance, laughter, sex (wild or mild) and a HEA/HFN ending. I would definitely read more from this author and would love to read more about Liam and Ray.
Thank you Mr. Jameson for participating in the LHNB event!

Heartfelt and emotional, the story is full of aching and loving as Liam comes to grips and shares his new "self" with another. Ray is his safe harbor, refuge in the storm--the man who loves him and not just the individual components.

Favorite quote:
“What?” Jeez, Ray was a post-orgasmic Chatty Cathy.

This story didn't match the picture, I felt. The characterisation seemed utterly different from that which the picture projected, which was a story I wanted to read. I thought the writer made everything oh so pathetic.

My favorite line in the story. I love Ray.

Loved the style, the narrative voice and the realistic nature of the story. But it was also sweet and romantic.

Ray's compassion and earthiness were a real highlight.
