Dr. Charlotte James will do anything to save her best friend's unborn baby--even turn to her ex-fiance, Dr. Quinn Devlyn! Their relationship ended badly after the loss of their own little miracle, and while Charlotte trusts the hotshot neonatal surgeon's amazing ability, she doesn't trust the man who buries his emotions in work....
A career-threatening injury has left Quinn at a crossroads in his life. But, working with Charlotte again in the snowbound beauty of her isolated community practice, he realizes he's been given a second chance to prove that both the baby and Charlotte's fragile heart will be safe in his hands....
Born and raised on the outskirts of Toronto, Ontario Amy fled the big city to settle down with the country boy of her dreams. When she's not furiously typing away at her computer, she's a mom to three wonderful children, who have given her another job as a taxi driver.
A voracious reader, she was given her first romance novel by her grandmother who shared her penchant for a hot romance. From that moment, Amy was hooked by the magical worlds, handsome heroes and sigh worthy romances contained in the pages and she knew what she wanted to be when she grew up.
Life got in the way, and after the birth of her second child, she decided to pursue her dream of becoming a romance author.
I always enjoy a reunion romance and when I received this book from Canadian author Amy Ruttan I was keen to see how she did in her debut. It took six months to get here so I'd almost forgotten it was coming when it turned up in my letter box. I hope it enjoyed the cruise.
Charlotte James and Quinn Devlyn met at medical school and fell in love. As you do. The trouble was that they came from completely different backgrounds and their goals were totally incompatible. Charlotte was committed to serve the isolated community where she grew up and Quinn was determined to get to the top and that meant New York. They might have worked it out if the crunch point hadn't come just when Charlotte lost the baby she was carrying but neither of them were in the right space.
Five years later, Quinn is a top neo-natal surgeon and he's just the man Charlotte needs to help her best friend through a high risk pregnancy. The surprising thing is that he came.
These two have a lot to work through and with the close community watching every move, it makes for an interesting conflict.
I enjoyed the story and became a little teary at the end. There are lots of emotional hits and not just around Charlotte and Quinn. The supporting cast were well drawn and added interest to the story.
Feeling safe in someone else's hands is something that does not come along on a daily basis. You need to get to know the person first and truly connect with them before you even might reach a level of thinking you feel safe in their hands.
For some it takes years for others it can happen in weeks, however long it make take there is always the threat of an event taking place that could destroy that perfect feeling-safe-bubble, and trying to mend it might end up in more heartache then happiness.
In this read from author Amy Ruttan we meet Charlotte, once upon at time she had it all with I-need-you-so-much- Quinn, they were happy and expecting their very own little miracle. Yes, they both had to learn to adjust to the idea but it seemed to be going well, until the hands of fate took it all away.
Quinn walks away never to be seen again but Charlotte does not lie down and admit defeat, she gets up and fights back to make a success of her life and not wallow over the baby or man she lost.
But now she needs his help to save her best friends baby. Brining him back also means she will be bringing back into her life all the feelings of hurt and anger right along with all the memories of long hot passionate nights. But she is much stronger this time around and she can do this, she has no other choice. That is until she sees him, and all hope is lost. Can she convince him to stay this time or will she be the one running?
The character of Charlotte was a true heroine. She does not let anything get her down to the point where she lets the world see it, she rather holds it together as much as humanly possible and cracks on her own out of sight. This showed me as reader that she is not only strong and able to face whatever situation comes her way but that she is the type of person you want in your life, for she will hold it all together for the sake of keeping you calm, perfect Dr. material.
I was saddened by her tragic loss of the past, and yes I cried for her, but what the author did was use this to help her see her own mistakes and really listen and observe Quinn. Totally loved that touch Amy!
The character of Quinn was definite save-me-all-night-long hero material. But underneath all the yummy delicious muscle there was also a man of so many layers created by the author that it left me feeling emotionally drained in the best kind of way. I wanted to know more, learn more, not only the reason he walked away but the true meaning of him guarding his feelings.
The author did a incredible job at taking both characters and letting the best of them shine through. Both characters went on a journey of self discovery and I simply loved the outcome.
The backdrop settings were exquisitely described by the author and I felt as if I could touch the wilderness and feel the chills. The dialogue was emotional, passionate, sweet and sensual, it hit all the right notes.
I am taking away a message of opening up your heart can lead to heartache but it might also lead you straight back into the happiness you have been missing.
I highly recommend this read for lovers of medical related romance reads, fans of old lovers reuniting and for anyone looking for a author who writes her books with so much depth and emotion it will touch your soul and leave you with a burning feeling to seek more.
5/5 star review "She is safe in his hands, unless he lets her go again"
SAFE IN HIS HANDS by debut author Amy Ruttan is a Mills & Boon and Harlequin Medical series release for September 2013.
Dr. Charlotte James calls her ex-fiance to help save her best friend’s baby. Because he was the very best there was. He was the top of his specialty and Amy respected him.
Even though he had walked when she’d miscarried their baby and needed him the most. He had gone to the job in a big city hospital as a top-notch surgeon.
Five years later, Dr. Quinn Devlyn had a bad accident and now he was not very confident of his surgical capabilities. He had taken a sabbatical from his position when he received a call for help from Amy. Would it be a chance to rekindle their romance? Could they find their way back?
SAFE IN HIS HANDS is a sensational romance, which is filled with astounding medical drama. Author Amy Ruttan made us visualize the story with her flawless story telling. The emotional and sensory details are exquisitely done and the sensuality in the love scene just sizzles. This is a story about recovering from past guilt and grief and moving forward. The premise was wonderful and story moved along very fast.
Highly recommended for all lovers of medical romance.

3 ½ Stars ~ This is Ms Ruttan's debut with Harlequin Medical Romance. This is a second chance, reunion love story.
Five years before, Charlotte and Quinn were about to launch their medical careers. From the moment they met, they were soul mates. It was natural for them to become engaged. Both were equally driven to succeed. Quinn was anxious to specialize in neonatal medicine. Charlotte eager to begin establishing her own general practice. Their goals were vastly different but their love and the baby they were expecting held them together. Then Charlotte miscarried. Quinn was offered a dream opportunity in New York; Charlotte wanting only to go home to Camp Recluse.
Now five years later, Charlotte has a thriving general practice in her home community and Quinn has become a top neonatal surgeon. It's Quinn's expertise that Charlotte needs. Mentlana's unborn baby was in trouble which also endangered her own. To save her best friend, Charlotte didn't hesitate putting aside painful emotions. She was actually surprised Quinn had agreed to come, a pro bono case seemed out of character as was his willingness to travel to Canada's High Arctic. She knows she's in trouble when one look at this more mature Quinn, puts in focus just how much she's missed him.
While Quinn had achieved top of his field, he'd had a set back last year, with an accident that resulted in a crushed hand and multiple surgeries to mend it. He's worried he's not ready for the delicate surgery Mentlana's baby needs. He's had a lot of time during his recovery to take a good look at his life. Now seeing Charlotte again and how she belongs to the people of her community, an intense loneliness fills him.
The 101 year old Inuk woman who had raised Charlotte when her father died, tells Quinn the story of the obstinate man. How the man's choices in taking the easier path had not been the wisest. When his heart is torn, he begins to see how he failed to see the pain of his woman. Anernek calls Quinn an obstinate man, and later she appeals to Charlotte to forgive him for she can see that he is a good man.
This is a story of second chances. Two stubborn hearts finally able to understand all the unspoken dreams. I enjoyed reading Quinn and Charlotte's story.

3.1 Stars. Public Library 4/15/15. Charlotte and Quinn were both in med school when they fell in love and got engaged. Their relationship ended poorly when Charlotte miscarried their child and their careers went in different directions. Now five years later Charlotte's patient and best friend is in need of Quinn's specific skills. One phone call and a plane ride later Quinn is back in her life. Forced together by the small community they begin to untangle their hurt feelings and see where their relationship went wrong. I enjoyed the story greatly until the end. The characters had finally begun to see past their own hurt feelings and perhaps build a better relationship when everything was swept under the rug and a HEA was slapped on. It negated all the slow work the characters had done to that point, robbing their relationship of its depth. Anernerk's death was hokey and disappointing. I understand why they had her die suddenly but why was she outside without a coat in that weather? She could've died any number of more believable ways to help the story progression.
Overall I liked the story a lot but it dropped in points as it got closer to the the end...
Dare she place her heart in his care? Dr. Charlotte James will do anything to save her best friend's unborn baby - even turn to her ex-fianc[unknown-233], Dr. Quinn Devlyn! Their relationship ended badly after the loss of their own little miracle, and while Charlotte trusts the hotshot neonatal surgeon's amazing ability, she doesn't trust the man who buries his emotions in work…. A career-threatening injury has left Quinn at a crossroads in his life. This is the 1st book I have read by Amy, and it will not be the last. Love her style of writing. This story was a tear jerker for me. Charlotte & Quinn are a great couple when something terrible happens and they go there seperate ways. But...not for long because true love finds a way to happen.
The heroine's insistence on doubting the hero's motives got old for me quickly. And I didn't enjoy the addition of the failed condom issue later on in the book... Alas, though I usually love second-chance stories, this one just didn't work for me.

I loved this so much I read it in one sitting and hubby ate alone that night. The Inuit setting was really unique with really good interesting supporting characters who didn't steal the story and I really loved the heroine.
