Nordic Notes is a collection of 60 wide-ranging articles on cross-country skiing. Some are about technique and equipment, some are about touring and some are about fitness and training. Many others are about topics of general interest: skiing with kids, skiing with blind people, navigating, travelling in ancient snow cats, Nordic walking, Scott of the Antarctic, things to see in the sky and things to be afraid of in Lillehammer. The author has worked for 25 years in ski travel, organising holidays in the Alps, Pyrenees and Scandinavia.
Stuart Montgomery grew up in southwest Scotland and studied at Stirling and Aberdeen universities. He spent a summer working as a furnace operator in Norway, then returned to Scotland and worked in turn as a psychiatric social worker, social researcher and lecturer. Then in the course of a belated gap-year that has still not ended, even though decades have elapsed, he became an itinerant mountain leader and a teacher of cross-country skiing. He has helped to run two specialist travel companies, Waymark Holidays (until 2004) and XCuk (until 2014).
As this is based on a series of blog articles it does not read as a single book, however, the articles are well grouped by type, informative and a pleasant read. Covers many aspects of Cross Country skiing and Nordic Walking. Recommended for anyone who wants to gain a bit more breadth and depth about cross country skiing
