Up in Flames

Rate this book
One small town girl with a bright future.
One smokejumper with a dark past.
One summer that will forever change them both.
They’re going . . .

Up In Flames.

Elle’s life couldn’t possibly get any more small town than it already is. She was raised in the same home as the two generations before her were, her family owns the iconic downtown cafe, and she’s been dating the pastor’s son since she was allowed to go on her first date at sixteen.

Cole’s life couldn’t possibly get any larger. He’s tried. Roaming from town to town for the past three summers as a smokejumper, Cole dreads the thought of putting down roots. The only thing he avoids more than that is settling down with one woman, especially when there are as many willing women as there are trees in the forest he jumps out of planes to save.

Elle Montgomery’s life is going one way. And Cole Carson’s is going the opposite. There’s no reason their paths should ever intersect, even in a small town in central Washington.

But summer in the Methow Valley has other plans for Elle and Cole. After an awkward run-in at the local swimming hole, Elle tries to keep away from the guy who looks at her like she’s already lying beneath him in bed. She fails. Cole is about as successful at staying away from the girl who seems immune to his charms.

As the summer heats up, and tensions between Elle and Cole run high, he begins to realize there’s more he’s attracted to than Elle’s body, and she discovers there’s a lot more to the man that jumps out of planes into raging forest fires than meets the eye.

As far as I know there are two types of books about cheating:

1. those who actually make me like the cheaters
2. those who make me want to burn them to ashes

and this book goes into the second category.

Wow! What a load of crap. This girl(forgot her name right after I finished it-not a good sign)is acting like she was living in a freaking monastery where people aren't allowed to say things like rack, penis,f#*% and so on but she still goes to this lake for a naked swim. What the actual *beep*? And she cheats on her boyfriend! And she goes and tells the cheater he 'made' her moan in disgust! I mean, what is wrong with her?! I hate this kind of wannabe goody two shoes characters. I am so mad! Ugh! And this new guy is not any better than her. He comes into this story like Hey,baby. I've seen your pubic hair and I know you want your hand all over my godlike body but then starts acting like a jealous schoolgirl sleeping and groping other women in front of this saint idiot.

I don't know how can people write this stuff. And it has such a high rating. Whaaat? O_o I am scared for humanity,I really am.

Elle & Cole
description

Up in Flames is a fast paced well written angst filled read, which I devoured within hours. I loved the way my heart pounded as I flew through each page of this story it was a definite adrenaline rush!

Whenever Elle Montgomery finds her life suffocating and boring she goes to her swimming hole on her grandmother’s property. Elle recently graduated high school and is wearing her first and only boyfriend Logan’s promise ring but the idea of life in this town married to Logan is suffocating to her.

Elle is so tired of suppressing who she is to please her family and friends. She wants so much more out of life and dreams of attending college and having so many adventures on her own but is afraid to rock the boat.

Once at the swimming hole, Elle stripes all of her clothes and swims to the bottom. She stays there for as long as she can hold her breath which she calls ‘sinking'.

As she is sinking to the bottom of the lake she suddenly finds herself being rescued and quickly realizes that she isn’t the only one skinning dipping that afternoon. The other skinny dipper is…get ready...Cole Carson.

My name’s Cole,” he said as he continued towards the shore.
“Don’t care,” I lied, not able to peel my eyes away from that long, tanned, muscled, dripping wet body.
“Last name’s Carson.”
“Care even less.” Did I sound as unconvincing to him as I did to my own ears?
“What’s your name?” he asked, pausing at knee level glancing back at me.
“My first name’s Keep and my last name’s Walking.”

Fireworks and I don’t mean little sparklers, I mean M-80s go off when Elle and Cole interact. The banter and flirting is so well written!

”I like that flustered look on your face,” he said, and even though I wasn’t looking at his face, I heard the smile in his voice. “See anything you like?”
“No,” I snapped.
“Really? Because that flushed expression says otherwise,” he said, his voice all tease. “I’ve got the whole afternoon open. I’d be happy to give you an in-depth, hands-on tutorial to Cole Carson.”

Elle’s world will never be the same after meeting Cole Carson. Cole is an irresistibly hot smokejumper, which is a firefighter who fights large forest fires by being dropped by aircraft. Cole falls for Elle from the first encounter and wants her, all of her.

Elle’s and Cole’s attraction and feelings for one another happens pretty quickly but it was completely believable I promise!

"That first day I saw you, I didn't care if you were with someone else. That night at the bonfire I didn't care. And last night"- his eyes flashed with the reminders-"I really didn't care. I wanted you then, Elle. And I want you now. You might belong to someone else, but you kind of belong to me, too." -Cole

"I'd known Cole just over a week. I didn't know his middle name or the name of his first pet, but feeling his arms around me was like coming home."-Elle

For most of the book, I waited not so patiently along with Cole for Elle to break up with Logan and pursue a relationship with him. It doesn’t happen so easily and all three involved in this love triangle get hurt.

"I might have only known you for a week, but it's long enough to know you're a special girl. You're the kind of girl guys will still be mourning a couple of decades from now. I'll be one of them."

Will the flames of Elle and Cole’s attraction burn out?
Is a future in the cards for them?

Side Note from this reader:
To Cole Carson,”I might kinda, sorta, really, truly love you.” xoxoxo

I liked it, I didn't love it. Hmmm, I find myself being stingy with stars in 2013...

“My name’s Cole,” he said as he continued towards the shore. “Don’t care,” I lied, not able to peel my eyes away from that long, tanned, muscled, dripping wet body.
“Last name’s Carson.”
“Care even less.” Did I sound as unconvincing to him as I did to my own ears?

“My first name’s Keep and my last name’s Walking.” What was I doing? I never talked like this to people. I’d come in second place as the senior class sweetheart. Second place sweethearts didn’t sass back to naked, hot strangers while they were naked themselves.

I'm a safety girl
Elle Montgomery has been living life according to what others want for her. Safe boring and uneventful. Those others being her father and boyfriend of two years, Logan. Now a high school graduate and on the path to marriage Elle starts to not only question the path set before her...She starts to rebel.

Enter Cole Carson.

“If you don’t take control of your life, Elle, someone else will..” ~Cole

Simply Irresistible

Cole is a smokejumper. Smokejumpers go from town to town putting out fires set by the blazing summer heat. Only this time Cole starts a fire inside of Elle, one she plans to NEVER let burn out!

“I’m sure you’ll find more than enough distractions to get you by,” I said, waving at the group that now had expanded so it was more of a four to one female to male ratio.
“See? One girl for every night this summer.”
“I’m more of a quality guy,” he said. “Once I find that quality girl, then I like quantity. Lots and lots of quantity.”
~Elle and Cole

My Thoughts
I thought this book was a little... I guess tame is the word I'm looking for.. Yes, I thought this was a bit "tame" compared to some of Williams previous books. I thought the plot was meh, okay.
Plot: Small town virgin girl has everything set before her then she meets a guy who changes everything. Nothing new there right? I don't know it could just be me.

Dear Readers
I gave this book 3 stars simply because I found the plot to be common. And at the time common was not what I was looking for. One good thing about Nicole Williams though... She can definitely bring the steam. Cole was HOT!

My Ratings
Characters- Cute and lovable
Writing Style- Fair
Plot/Storyline- Standard/Common
Steam Factor- High/Very Steamy
Overall- I liked it. I didn't love it.

Now go forth and read. Then come tell us about it on Goodreads!

2.5 *sigh* stars

I really wanted to love this book, but sadly there was just too much about it that bothered me. It started off promising – a young girl, trying to figure life out and dreaming of a bright future meets a hot badboy and they embark on a seamy summer fling. Sounds good, huh? But the heroine turns out to be whiney and weak, and the story dissolves into a love triangle with lots of cheating and game playing.

*sigh*

Elle is a small town girl, working in her father’s restaurant, dating her high school sweetheart and living a mundane life, while dreaming of something bigger and better. Her life takes an unexpected twist when Cole Carson comes to town. Cole is a smoke jumper – an adrenaline junky that parachutes in to fight forest fires, and he and his fellow jumpers are based in town for the summer.

They meet when Cole ‘rescues’ a very naked Elle while she is swimming in the local water hole. He is equally naked, which makes it all very awkward. But from the very first moment between them, sparks fly and Cole reveals himself to be overly confident, flirty and charmingly arrogant.

“I like that flustered look on your face,” he said, and even though I wasn’t looking at his face, I heard the smile in his voice. “See anything you like?”
“No,” I snapped.
“Really? Because that flushed expression says otherwise,” he said, his voice all tease. “I’ve got the whole afternoon open. I’d be happy to give you an in-depth, hands-on tutorial to Cole Carson.”

Elle is equally attracted to him, and there is lots of banter and sexual tension and they very quickly fall for each other.

“I'd known Cole just over a week. I didn't know his middle name or the name of his first pet, but feeling his arms around me was like coming home.”

But the problem is, Elle already has a boyfriend. She doesn’t tell Cole this, he just finds out by accident. Of course he’s hurt, but he’s willing to give her the benefit of the doubt when she swears that she doesn’t love Logan, and will break up with him just as soon as she can.

I usually don’t mind love triangles in a book, but this one annoyed me. Elle has obviously fallen for Cole, she admits she doesn’t love Logan, yet she still holds on to him. Then she gets annoyed that Cole won’t take things further with her while she belongs to somebody else (he gets bonus points for that), but rather than dealing with the issue and letting poor Logan go, she clings to him, being more forward with him than she has in the past (because she is a virgin, of course) and actually uses him to make Cole jealous! And then there is push and pull and stupid games as the two of them try to hurt each other.

“I wanted you to feel the rage boil in my blood when I found out you were going on a date...with him tonight,” he cursed the word, “after being with me last night. I wanted you to feel the same pain I did. The goddamn same debilitating pain.”

My heart broke for these boys. Poor, clueless Logan has no idea what’s going on, only that his girlfriend is suddenly pushing their relationship further than she has before, and he's happily planning for a future with his girl. And Cole tries hard to do the right thing, but there is only so much he can do while waiting for Elle to get her shit together.

“I’m sorry,” I said into his shirt.
“I’m not,” he replied. “I’ll never be sorry for anything that lets me be with you, Elle. Right now, I’m happy to have whatever piece of you I can.”

I have to confess, I wasn’t a fan of Elle. I get that she’s young, and she’s figuring out what she wants in her life, but she came across as whiney.

“Most days, I just felt like I’m going along with what everyone else but me wants for my life. And on the rare day I try and fight back, the battle is over before it even begins … Each day kind of feels like a betrayal to myself, you know?”

If she was so unhappy with her life – do something about it! She whines about how nobody asks what she wants, they just expect things from her, but she’s never actually TOLD anybody how she’s feeling, or what she wants. She feels pressured by the expectations that others place on her, but she allows it. If she blindly goes along with what people ask of her, and never complains or stands up for herself, what else can she expect?

I did like that she finally found the strength to stand up and claim what she wanted. All she needed was support and a push in the right direction, and I’m glad that Cole gave that to her. It added a nice sense of depth to their relationship.

“Stop ignoring it. Live your life, Elle Montgomery,” he said, his eyes glowing from his words. “I can tell from a couple of conversations with you that you’re one hell of a woman. Imagine the woman you could be if you lived for now one else but yourself.”

I did like Cole and Elle together, and although it was fast, they had great chemistry and there is a nice amount of steaminess, and swoony declarations.

“The first day I saw you, I didn’t care if you were with someone else … I wanted you then, Elle. And I want you now. You might belong to someone else, but you kind of belong to me, too.”

The book is told entirely from Elle’s POV, and even though events in the story didn’t really work for me, there were some bright moments as Elle finds her way…

“Don’t be scared of making mistakes … Be scared of making none. Because if you’re not making a healthy number of mistakes along the way, you’re not really living life to its fullest.”

And after an extremely dramatic climax, things eventually turn out ok – although I wasn’t happy with the way the whole Logan storyline played out… grrrrrr.

A lot of people love this book, and I can certainly see why – it has all of the elements. It just didn’t work for me.

2.5 stars - it was just ok.

Elle just graduated from High School, lives in a small town, works in her Dad's crepe shop, dates the preacher's son and has never had sex. Elle meets Cole, sexy smoke jumper dare devil bad boy while she is skinny dipping in a lake and so is he. Yeah.. you guessed it (insta-love) and so goes the story.
Cole wants Elle but only if he can have all of her, which means she has to break off her "promise" to Logan. So.. we have some misunderstanding, some angst, some caught with our pants down, heartache and then a HEA.
If you are looking for a quick and easy little story of first lusty love, then this may be your book. Not so much for me, although the sweet smexy scenes were smoke jumping hot!

The Good, the Okay, the Bad and the WTF:

This may sound like I did not like this book, but I did enjoy a lot of the story. I did not hate it, I did not love it. It was just okay for me. The biggest problem was that it’s hard for me to love a book when the heroine of the story is a total asshole. I hated her attitude about her life. I especially hated how she treated her boyfriend, Logan. She cheated and lied all so she could sneak around with Cole. I just did not care about her at all. She was too self-absorbed with no regard for what her actions might do to the people who care about her. Honestly, I thought both guys were too good for her.

Elle Montgomery is bored with her small town life. She’s tired of doing what is expected of her by her father and her boyfriend, Logan. She wants something more than the diner she runs with her father and her pending future marriage to Logan. Elle has always been a bit of a prude, the good girl who always does the right thing and that was okay until she meets Cole Carson. He’s a gorgeous bad boy smokejumper and he brings out her inner bad girl. She knows he’s bad news, but can’t help but be drawn to him no matter how much she’s in denial about that at first. Soon, she is lying to her father, lying to her boyfriend and messing around with Cole. Part of her is appalled by her actions and the other part, the bad girl in her, is loving her new found freedom.

The Good: Logan. He’s a sweet guy, the hometown hero, baseball god, good to Elle, loves her, wants to marry her someday and he respects her. I felt really bad for the guy. He was completely duped by this bitch. No worries Logan, you dodged a bullet.

The Okay: Cole. He’s hot, he’s a hero and he has some of the best, most romantic lines in the book, but he also has some of the most ridiculous. He can be seriously nasty when he wants to be. When he’s mad, look out because this guy does not pull any punches. He has a tendency to be a total douche when he’s hurt and his words can be harsh and cut deep. He had some especially harsh words for Elle that should have pissed me off, but you know what “You reap what you sow”, so I had a hard time feeling sorry for her. I did like his possessiveness which shows up later in the story. I always think it’s hot when the H is all “you are mine.”

The Bad: Elle is a cheater and a whiny selfish little brat. She gives the impression that everything is fine between her and her high school sweetheart, Logan, all the while she is running around behind his back with Cole. She could have been honest with Logan and let him know how she was feeling about their relationship before the cheating. It’s obvious she wanted Cole from the time she met him. Instead of just letting Logan down easy, she chose to keep on lying to him and carrying on with Cole behind his back. She’s a tramp and I could not stand her. I just could not bring myself to care about what happened to her.

The WTF: ***************SPOILER ALERT***************:
There is a bowling alley scene in which Elle uses Logan to make Cole jealous and Cole uses some skank to make Elle jealous. Their behavior toward each other and the person they are with is especially heinous. I hated this scene. Cole was a mean bastard and Elle was a total bitch for the way she was leading Logan on.

The story overall was entertaining and there were some hot scenes between Cole and Elle. I have no regrets about reading this, but it’s not one that I will ever re-read. If you enjoy love stories with a lot of angst, then I would recommend this to you. By the end of the story, I just could not help thinking all of this heartache could have been avoided if Logan would have just put out.

In closing, I will leave you with my favorite quote from Cole during Elle’s drunken deflowering scene and there are so many good ones, it was so hard to choose: “I’m going to do my best not to screw you the way I’ve been jacking off lately. Okay?" How romantic.

The most exciting thing was smoke jumping, and even that didn't satisfy, because the action of it didn't happen until the end.

Again, this was one of those reads where the characterization of the heroine ruined the whole dang experience for me and the hero just wasn't yummy or charismatic enough to camouflage it.

Elle was a weak, judgmental and selfish neophyte who never redeemed herself and certainly made me wonder why the hero and the other guy (who btw was a good guy) were SOoo smitten with her.

The dialogue tried to be unique and witty, but it struggled half the time; yet the storyline, that followed a familiar and simple format, was a quick and slightly okay read, ironically.

“Don’t be afraid of making mistakes, be scared of making none. Because if you’re not making a healthy number of mistakes along the way, you’re not really living life to the fullest.”

Elle Montgomery, small town sweetheart, has her whole life planned out for her. She has just graduated high school, and is working at her family’s diner. Sooner rather than later she is supposed to be marrying town hero and high school boyfriend Logan. Deep down, everything about her future freaks her out. She is suffocating.

Most days, I just feel like I’m going along with what everyone else but me wants for my life. And on the rare day I try and fight back, the battle is over before it even begins.

Since she can’t do anything too wild, she goes to her Grandmother’s property and skinny dips, trying to get her mind off things. She realizes after a while, she is not alone at the swimming hole. Cole ‘rescues’ Elle when he thinks she is drowning (she is actually trying to break a record for ‘sinking’) It was lust at first sight. Elle doesn’t want to be attracted to Cole, but there are sparks there. And they have major chemistry.

Especially with the way he looked tonight. Like sex, seduction, and sin had decided to get it on and Cole Carson was the result.

Cole brings out a totally different side of Elle. The type of person she wants to be, not who she is expected to be. I loved them together. I loved the person Elle could be with Cole. He didn’t want to control her and her life, he wanted her to be in control of her life, not her father, not Logan, but her.

“If you don’t take control of your life, Elle, someone else will.”

Cole is a smokejumper- and he is smoking hot...Cole falls hard for Elle, he pursues her relentlessly, unaware that she has a boyfriend. When he finds out, lets just say it doesn’t go over well. Elle has to make a choice. Live the life that has been mapped out for her, or do what she wants for once, and take a chance on the unknown.

“You are mine now,” he breathed outside my ear. “Mine forever.”

Best part of this book... Cole Carson . Hands down.
“I might kinda, sorta, really, truly love you.”
Cole was great. I liked Elle a lot, but she aggravated me at times- I wanted her to make a decision much earlier in the book than she did. There were some nice supporting characters, her best friend Dani was hilarious, and I loved her Grandma M.

There was some definite angst and major steam, overall a really great read!

FIVE FLAMING STARS

wow wow wow wow wow wow wow This was everything I expected and everything I didn't. Up in Flames was my monthly Favourite .
It was beautifully written, as all Nicole Williams books are. I am over the moon with this book, over the mother flipping moon !
I hate love triangles with a passion because I always feel bad for the person left out but somehow in this book I didn't maybe it was because the other character was amazing, anyway if you're like me and dislike love triangles don't worry this book is still good INCREDIBLE!

 photo imagejpg2_zpsfb2742f6.jpg

COLE CARSON is a smokejumper, he moves from one town to the next every summer and somehow he found himself in Winthrop, that's fine though and it gets even better when he tries to save Elle. The sparks fly something that hasn't happened in a while, but he shouldn't like Elle because he knows she's hiding something but doesn't know what. Will he be able to stay away from her when she needs him too, well he doesn't want to.

ELLE MONTGOMERY Is lost, or more like, she wants to be lost. She has an amazing boyfriend, Logan who is the towns golden boy and in her mind is a tad boring but she would tell you that out loud. She wishes she was somewhere different, not stuck in her home town but she knows she can't wish that so she doesn't, her soul does. She wants more from her boyfriend, but what she really wants is to feel loved. He loves her and she loves him but she needs him to prove it. Cole Carson pops into her life trying to save her, no joke. She can't decide if she should stay away from this boy, this boy that makes her feel things her boyfriend can't make her feel.

LOGAN MATHEWS is having a great summer, except one thing, his girlfriend has been awfully busy. With baseball games being out of town he hasn't seen her much and when he has she hasn't been herself. Thats okay it's probably her just missing him, once he proposes everything will be fine. If only he wasn't turning a blind eye to what's going down with his girlfriend and I mean 'down'.

 photo imagejpg1_zps3005e7e6.jpg

There will be twists that you never saw coming, things that make you wanna close your eyes and things that leave your mouth open in shock but most of all this book will leave you begging for more. This stand alone book has everything, angst, fear, love, desire, hope, all bundled into one beautiful book. You're in for a time of your life, but don't worry, it's a bloody good one.

More Reviews Here: Readers Live A Thousand Lives

It’s no secret that Nicole Williams is one of my favorite authors, so I went in hoping to love this one and love it I did. She always hits me right in the feels. Her books always tug on the heartstrings and put me through the wringer and I absolutely love every single second of it.

Elle was always the good girl who did exactly what everyone expected of her. But that is beginning to get old for Elle and she is looking to break free. I liked Elle. She made some bad choices and I didn’t agree with some of her decisions, but I still liked her. She just felt stuck and while none of her problems may seem monumental, I still saw how she felt like she had no choice. It may not be rational, but she just needed to find herself. Her Dad controlled her entire life and it’s hard for her to finally take that control, but I was proud of her when she did.

Then we have Cole and I loooooooved Cole. I fell hard for him. He is tough and rugged but also sweet. He is a bad boy with a good heart and I absolutely loved that about him. But boy, when he got upset did he get upset. Some of the things he said out of anger made me so mad at him, but that’s Cole. It doesn’t excuse anything, but he feels everything and he feels it with everything he has.

I’m not gonna lie. The cheating aspect was not something I approved of, but I’m not one of those readers who absolutely hates it in book. I accept it as fiction and go along with the story. I didn’t like what Cole and Elle did to Logan behind his back, but I also didn’t hate them for it. Elle just didn’t want to hurt anyone and neither Cole nor Elle expected one another. So I don’t approve of it, but I could understand their decisions and I was 100% rooting for Cole and Elle to make it work.

Up In Flames brought all of the swoon and schmexy times and I ate them up. The feels were strong with this one. My heart was ripped to shreds multiple times because I cared so much for these characters. No one does feels and romance like Nicole.

Up In Flames was a great read and another wonderful book from Nicole. A great romance, not to be missed.

So much love for this book I don't know where to start!

Nicole Williams- I. Love. Your. Books. I love your mad writing skills, your emotionally gripping stories, your sweet and complex characters and of course your name. You really do have a gift for writing incredible stories....thank you! "I might kinda, sorta, really, truly love you. "

This book has everything I love: The story is fast paced, angst filled, with chemistry that keeps your heart pounding and turning the pages with adrenaline. And to top it off it's set in Washington with mention of my alma mater WSU! Go Cougs!

The story of Elle and Cole...... Well I like the chemistry these two had almost immediately. Elle has pretty much been
"Betrothed" to Logan her high school sweetheart. She wanted something more, it was a feeling she had deep inside. She wanted college, she wanted to have a life before she was settled down and married. She wanted to experience things. Logan was happy being the small town king. Cole was a smokejumper, and boy was he on fire! He was hot, sexy and fierce. But he was also wounded. He'd experienced loss in a harmful way that you feel sad for him. But he sure lit a fire within Elle and it was really great for her. She started to stand up for herself. She was going after what she wanted and not what was expected. She ended up with her fathers support and bright looking future and a great boy. Logan was hurt and I felt that I wanted more about him in the story. The ending was great but was a but abrupt for my liking. An Epilogue would've been nice. So maybe their story continues?.....

3.5 stars - definitely read this if you enjoy a contemporary teen romance!!! I was caught up in this audio immediately - the characters and narration were very intriguing!! The story unfolded a bit predictably and stuck to the traditional small town teen woes and life frustrations. The love triangle did get a tad old once it hit the back and forth, but again if this is your style you will really enjoy it - the writing is great!!

Bravo Ms. Williams! You became one of my favorite YA writers after reading such series as Crash and Eternal Eden that have been my favorite reads of 2012. Now Ms. Williams has moved on up with an amazing Adult novel, Up In Flames.

Up In Flames is about 18 year Elle Montgomery who has her whole life planned out for her by her father and high school boyfriend Logan. Elle and Logan have been together since Elle was 16 but have been friends since childhood. The two just graduated from High School and Logan plans to propose to Elle over the summer and let their life begin. Elle wants more in her life, she wants to move away from their small Washington state town and go to college. She wants to know what it feels to be wanted… sexually… and go beyond her and Logan’s “G” relationship.

As summer begins, the Smoke Jumpers come to town to protect & stop the forest fires that threaten Washington each summer. The Smoke Jumpers are men who thrive jumping out of planes to put out the fires with no care in the world or roots to settle down. Cole is one of the Smoke Jumpers in town this summer and has his eyes set for Elle. The two develop a connection that not even Elle can explain but she wants to be the person Cole is and Cole is the only one who supports Elle in her wants/needs to live the life she wants, not the one that has been planned for her by her father and boyfriend. Cole and Elle develop a romantic relationship, Elle experiencing things with Cole that she could never imagine doing with Logan… her boyfriend. Elle has to decide what and who she wants in her life.

Up In Flames was a great surprise for me as I read the novel. I wasn’t sure what exactly I was expecting; I knew it would be good because I love Nicole Williams’s novels but had no idea Up In Flames would have such an effect on me as I read it. First let me tell you, you will LOVE Cole… he is totally swoon worthy and moving his way up in my top 2013 book boyfriend list. The scenes of Cole and Elle together are extremely hot and sexy, even when they were not having actual “sex” the scenes were steamy. I loved the character of Cole so very much, even Elle was a really like-able character that even with her cheating on Logan, her sweet high school boyfriend I couldn’t hate her. I felt sorry for her because of the small town life she was stuck in and couldn’t voice her opinion and no one asked for it either.

The relationship Cole and Elle developed was beautiful and epic on every level; it was hot, sexy, but tender, and loving. Elle saved Cole from his life as much as he saved her from his. The ending was really nice but I am hoping there will be a book two. It ended with a perfect set up continuing with another book. As of now I have not heard but I would be deeply disappointed if Cole and Elle’s journey ends here.

I highly recommend Up In Flames to those who loved the Crash series, I found the two books somewhat similar but Up In Flames is definitely more of an Adult book then Crash. Also it had the same cheating on a good-boy with a bad-boy set up as the famous Thoughtless by S.C. Stephens if you enjoyed that storyline you will love Up In Flames.

I give Up In Flames 4 giant STARS! It is a must read for 2013!

I'm a big fan of Nicole Williams, so when I found out she was writing a NA Contemporary, I said "YES, PLEASE." Up in Flames certainly didn't disappoint. It had everything I like to see in a New Adult book; it was steamy and had a great love story.

I will go ahead and warn you that Elle has boyfriend. They've known each other since they were kids. It's almost expected that they get married, but Elle feels like she wants something more. Then she meets Cole. When Cole comes into the picture, everything she thought she wanted changes. Cole is exciting, passionate, and completely consumed by Elle. The problem: Elle has a boyfriend.

Now, I typically have a tough time reading about cheating and love triangles, but this one didn't bother me. My reason is that while Logan, her boyfriend, is a good guy, he can't really give Elle what she needs. He's not around much and he seems content to follow along with what is expected. So, for me it wasn't a big deal. It wasn't like she didn't feel remorse about her actions either. She loves Logan, but she's not in love with him. Her attraction and connection with Cole is much deeper.

I will go right ahead and say that Cole made the book for me. I liked Elle, don't get me wrong, but Cole is just...*sigh*. He's a bit more complex than I originally thought he would be. We learn more about his past towards the end of the book, but even until that point he was an interesting guy. I don't think I've ever read a book about smokejumpers. Cole fits what I imagined they would be like. He likes action and isn't afraid to take a chance; definitely a passionate guy. Loved him.

Overall, Nicole Williams delivered once again. I was so into the story that I read it within a few hours. I loved the way they come together in the end and was sad to see it end. It ends with Elle and Cole going away to college, so maybe that leaves the potential for another book? If you're looking for a fast, well-written, steamy love story...look no further.

Quotes:
~"We were brought into the world naked and it's a damn shame somewhere along man's way he felt the need to cover up." Those eyes of his sparkled. "Because bodies like yours make clothing a real tragedy."-Loc 110

~I needed fire. I wouldn't settle for less and I hadn't realized I needed it until Cole had showed me.-Loc 1029

~"What the hell, Elle? You start having some thing with a guy so damn hot he makes me come just by looking at him and I'm the last to know?" She shoved my arm again. "Not cool."-Loc 1597

~"And then I met you and I wanted more out of life than just jumping out of planes for a quick rush. Because who in their right mind would settle for a quick rush when you could have a long, long rush?"-Loc 3194

”Don’t be scared to make mistakes. Be scared of making none. Because if you’re not making a healthy number of mistakes along the way, you’re not really living life to its fullest.”

Elle just graduated high school, and has her life all planned out for her, the only problem, she’s not the one planning, her dad and her boyfriend-soon-to-be-husband make all the decisions for her.
”The cowardly lion had nothing on me.”

Cole Carson is a smokejumper, in for the summer and lives in the moment. He’s a playful flirt and sets his site on Elle. He sees and brings out a different side of her that she didn't even know she had.
”I’ve got whole afternoon open. I’d be happy to give you an in-depth, hands-on tutorial to Cole Carson.”

There is something ”special, something rare” between them, but Cole won’t let things go further with Elle, not when she belongs to someone else.
”God knows I want to so bad I’m about to lose it, but I won’t take you until you’re mine. All mine. I won’t share you with another.”

Elle was stuck between choosing between Logan and Cole, and didn’t know what she should do.
”My brain and heart had officially declared war on one another.”

Don’t get me wrong I liked it but I wish I could have liked it more...but Elle was just so frustrating to me, she was just so weak, so clueless, plus all the lying and cheating, I pretty much lost respect for her. How many times I wish I could just reach in and slap some sense in her. Luckily Cole was there to make it all better for me.
”I might kinda, sorta, really, truly love you .”

I'm not big on YA fiction, I'll admit. However, after reading Crash, and enjoying it, I decided to give this NA novel a chance.

I'm in a bit of an internal debate with my rating however. The book was good. It was well written, angsty, and steamy. So what made this not a 5 star read for me? The main heroine, Elle.

minor spoilers below

Truthfully, I'd say this is a 3 star read for me. I will give it one more star simply out of the understanding that Elle JUST graduated high school..so some angst, misunderstanding, and actions can be written away by her naivety and immaturity.

I truly did enjoy the writing style of this author and the story itself. But my own personal bias keeps me from giving this book a 5 star review. So I will stick with 4*

So much cheating. I couldn't get over all the deceit and lies and cheating. Just to be clear, I read the whole story because I wanted to see Elle come clean and for everyone to just be honest with one another. I had hoped that the story would get better and all the characters would redeemed themselves.

Alas, they don't. It's not because the story was poorly written or anything like that. I simply could not get past the cheating. Apparently, in Elle's case, it's okay to cheat on your best friend/boyfriend as long as you do it behind his back and as long as the guy you're doing with is hot, right? So what if Logan's a good guy and treated Elle like a queen. So what if he would've given her everything and more. Cole's hot and exciting so it's fine.

Yeah, okay. Whatever. Not exactly a lesson I would want to teach others.

I know people cheat in real life. It's just something I'd rather not read about. I would've loved this book if Elle had just broken up with Logan from the get go. To me, it would've made her a stronger character, resisting temptation and just being the better person. Sadly, she doesn't do any of these things.

The only reason why I'm not giving this one star is because of the writing. Again, it's not a poorly written story. It just contains all the wrong messages that I personally wouldn't want to teach readers if I were an author.

This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

I'm having a really hard time rating this book. I think I'll make it:

3/5 stars

I wasn't hooked from page 1 and I'm not a fan of the 'holier-than-thou-virgin' heroine. I warmed up to her a bit later on though.

I don't know, the book had potential and it had some great parts but about halfway it was just ruined for me. The constant doubting and nobody willing to make a decision grew tiresome and it ended up being a 'who can hurt who the best' game. it turned nasty and cruel - not to mention that it turned into cheating. I don't know, the ending was sweet and all, but in my opinion, the middle just destroyed the magic, made me dislike both of them and I just didn't really care anymore.

But if you don't mind cheating storylines and characters playing mean games, this may very well be your book. There's nothing wrong with the writing, the steamy scenes are hot and the setting is very original, I've never even heard about smoke jumpers before I read this book.

Wow. That was not good. That was nothing like I imagined it would be. Very little appealed to me. Mostly the font. I kid you not.

The heroine is a little whiny bi...scuit with fluff in her head and no empathy for others' feelings, for example her boyfriend whom she cheated on repeatedly (while trying to jump bf's bones too). The "hero" is an ass with behaviour and psychological issues. He acts like a high-on-testosterone ass hat who doesn't even know what (or who) he wants and so he dry humps all things with boobs, be it the heroine or not. In the end they actually decide they want each other, after surviving being trapped in a fire situation right where her mother died. Ah, the drama of it all!

And did anyone remember to check on Logan, the poor guy? I liked him way better than that smokejumper whose name totally skipped my mind, and this tells you a lot!

Blaaah.

I love when a book surprises me! I have read several Nicole Williams books. Most of them have been YA or a toned down New Adult. This book was holy hotness! Smokejumper Cole was SMOKIN! I loved this one! I had no clue what a Smokejumper was before I read this. I seriously can't believe there are people brave enough to make that career choice. Awesome read!

DNF'd the Audiobook.
Narrator was not for me. But what made me DNF at practically the beginning was another BFF that was outgoing, slutty, stylish, and beautiful. You know everything the self conscious heroine "was not." *eye roll* So it may be a fantastic book that just starts out with a bunch of cliches, but I just don't have the patience to find out...

Up In Flames = Burned out. I didn't expect this great absence of quality throughout ALL 14 chapters! Such an airy-fairy lot! A bunch of horny teenagers, a convenient ignorant boyfriend, oh...and Elle = insignificant. I couldn't care less about Cole.

Ok I freaking love this Author I loved Crash and Clash and I loved Up in Flames.... Anyway moving on!!!

This is a book about finding yourself, making decisions sticking with them, and finding your soul mate along the way

Elle Montgomery has her life set to work at her fathers crepe cafe, get married to her boyfriend since they were sixteen and have babies.
She feels numb just surviving above the surface, living day to day doing what she's been told to do by her dad who makes her decisions for her and attending church on sundays. Her boyfriend barely touches her..... so thats how Elle lives untill she meets Cole....

She goes for a swim naked doing the one thing she does risky that no-one else knows about where she holds her breath under water cole thinks she's sinking and thinks he's saving her life, he gets out and he's naked too she stares and oh my.... "see anything you like?" No, "I snapped. "Really? Because that flushed expression says otherwise," His voice all a tease. "I've got the whole afternoon open. I'd be happy to give you an in-depth, hands-on tutorial to Cole Carson."

Cole Carson is a smokejumper roaming town to town for the past three years. Cole doesn't want to settle down when there's many women out there who are happy to jump him as much as he's happy to jump out of planes to save the tree's in the forest, until he meets Elle so will they Go up in flames?

"I'm more of a quality guy,"he said. "Once I find that quality girl, then I like quantity.Lots of quantity."

He teaches her how to take control of her life and they slowly fall for each other. There is a slightly thoughless feel to it but it does get resolved eventually and she make's the right decision.

She feels trapped by the people who love her...
"Because most days, I just feel like I'm going along with
what everyone else but me wants for my life. And on the
rare day I try and fight back, the battle is over before it
evan begins."

Then why don't you tell everyone to fuck off and start
living your life day to day like me?"

So once Cole finds out she has a boyfriend he freaks out a little but then comes back with this:
That first day I saw you, I didn't care if you were with someone else."That night at the bonefire I didn't care. And last night"-his eyes flashed with the reminders-"I really didn't care. I wanted you then, Elle. And I want you now.You might belong to someone else, but you kind of belong to me, too."

Aww he's so swoon worthy and won't take all of her until he's completely hers You want sex,you have to break up with him.

So eventually she chooses Cole......

He growled roughly when I said that. I'm going to give it to you so damn good, Elle,"he said, lowering himself over me again."I'm going to make you come so hard you won't be able to stop screaming my name."

And then we get...

Cole's eyes didn't leave mine. "They looked like they never might. "I might kinda, sorta, really, truly love you."

So overall I adored how Cole brought Elle out of herself becoming a fiesty woman it was a brilliant read and I really enjoyed it.

41/2 Star read!!!

Hmmmm...what to say about this one?? Saw that this book was a love triangle and those I love to read so I was onboard. This book for me had its equal of the good and the bad. The first part of the book was really good and it was on a fast track to a 5 star read for me. I was feeling the chemistry, sexual tension and insta attraction between Cole and Elle ..Loved their little banter too...

THEN after hitting the half way mark things got really weird. Suddenly I was not really feeling them....

Overall the book was OK for me. It has it's dose of drama, a bit of angst, hot sex and a HEA. It really had the potential to be really great, but I think too much started to irritate me about the story and certain situations. I lost my chemistry with the book and it just started to be much too unbelievable...**sigh**

Now at this point, I’m sick of reading New Adult books that follow the track of Fifty Shades of Grey and the like. It’s depressing reading romances about college age students who are falling in love, all the while battling their pasts full of sexual abuse. That seems to be a theme in romantic fiction as of late and I’m starting to need something a little bit more upbeat and less depressing. That’s when I read Up In Flames by Nicole Williams. It was my saving grace for the NA genre because I was about ready to throw in the towel for a while!

Elle is your typical small town girl. She’s practically engaged to the town’s sports hero, she’s working at her dad’s restaurant and after graduating high school her life’s been laid out for her. She doesn’t need to worry about a thing... and she’s sick of it. She’s tired of never letting loose. She’s frustrated at dating a guy who barely touches her and most of all, she’s had enough of being told what to do and how her life will be. That’s when she meets Cole. Cole is a smoke jumper in town for the summer to work during wildfire season and he’s the exact opposite of who Elle should want. With his fiery demeanor and his smoldering looks, Elle knows she’s in for trouble, but she dives in anyway.

I really, really needed this book. I wanted a standalone that was romantic, steamy, fun and that’s what I got in Williams’s Up In Flames.

Elle was a character that I could very easily relate to. She grew up in a very tight knit family and community and while they only wanted what was best for her, they planned her life. She was left with no decisions and she felt lost. Of course when you’re a kid, your parents tell you that you can be whoever you want to be, but they also have a plan for you. A plan to help you succeed. In that way, I really felt for Elle. She’s at a critical point in her life where she has to either follow along with the plans laid out for her, or she can break free and forge her own way.

Annnnd then there is Cole. I mean this guy is smoking. He’s the bad boy with a sweet heart that fights forest fires... YES PLEASE. I loved Cole and his role in helping Elle grow to be the woman she wants to be.

This book was quick, light hearted and fun and I really enjoyed it. Beware (or take note!), there are some pretty steamy scenes in this one!

8 out of 10

Happy Reading :)

Hot!!!!!!

Question. Why is it that I am just now learning about Smoke Jumpers? Holy crap and holy hotness. Thank you Nicole! This book is really hot. I mean yes, it does feature a bunch of firefighters so I was expecting a hot factor, but it is seriously steamy.

Elle Montgomery is a good girl. She's always done what she was supposed to and what is expected of her. She knows that now that she has graduated high school she'll probably marry her high school boyfriend and work for her father. But when her boyfriend starts talking about marriage she avoids it at all costs; something inside her wants to be set free and that part of her is not okay being tied down. Enters Cole Carson who spends his summer at the smoke jumper camp near her home town, upon meeting him she begins to question what exactly she's doing with her life. Cole's philosophy of living in the moment and doing what you want piques Elle's interest. And so begins one of the hottest love stories, EVER.

Cole Carson is like sex on a freaking stick. OH MY GOODNESS. Nicole made me blush, a lot. And I loved it. A lot.

"Like sex, seduction, and sin had decided to get it on and Cole Carson was the result."

Amen Nicole, Amen. Loving him was so wrong, especially while dragging her poor boyfriend along, but who could resist that. Elle didn't stand a chance. She has this hidden spark that Cole ignites, a fire kindling until she lets loose around him. Everyone else knows her as the prude good girl, but for once she gets to be herself. I loved their banter, especially when they first meet. The chemistry and electricity between them was seductive and so fun to experience.

"Yeah, if I was an angel, then mankind was screwed."

Nicole does every single thing right. She is one of my favorite authors and when I finished this book I was reminded how wonderful she is; and I also had this yearn to go back and read everyone of her other books again! Nicole kept me up late into the night to finish this one. I couldn't stop once I started, and I started pretty late. It features everything I look for in a book and one incredible ending!
