YA fiction Of late, Vivien Allen’s life has cruised safely on autopilot. And safety is exactly what she clings to. Heaven knows her sixteen years have been struck with enough drama to last a lifetime. Yet while the status quo provides a sense of comfort, Vivien can’t ignore the small voice inside that yearns for something different. As junior year begins this longing is answered in the form of Christophe Laval, the young and fabulously different new French teacher. Before long an exciting yet indefinable friendship develops which complicates things considerably as she suddenly finds herself falling for Declan Mieres, the senior star lacrosse player. The need to hide the two sides of her life becomes increasingly difficult, the omissions and half-truths weighing on her conscience. When at last she resolves to change her ways, the truth is far more frightening than any lie.
Hi there and welcome to my author page. Here are a few thoughts I'd like to share with you.
1. I believe reading novels is one of the best ways to increase your knowledge on just about ANY subject. As you follow the characters into their world you can't help but soak up all sorts of new information. There is nothing like the feeling of losing yourself in a good book.
2. Most kids these days do not read enough due to an overabundance of competing distractions. (Obviously this does not apply to YOU since here you are! So take a second and pat yourself on the back).
3. I love writing and it is my great, great aspiration to connect with some of you voracious readers.
4. Other factoids: I attended the University of Wisconsin for four of the best years of my life (Go Badgers!). I recently had the good fortune to move to Carolina Beach (livin' the dream) with my husband, four children, and three dumb dogs.
Slip is all about how the saying "Don't judge a book by its cover" can be applied to people. It shows how no one is who you think he/she is even when you've spent countless of hours with them. How us, humans, are so easily swayed that we're the easiest prey in the animal kingdom. Tell us a few sweet words, exactly the ones we want to hear, and we lay down ourselves willingly at someone else's feet. We may do things with the best intentions, but not everyone is that way, and that's when things can get dangerous.
The plot of this book is good and at times surprising (won't give anything away). I often felt the need to rub my arms to shake the chilly feeling away. I knew from the start who the bad guy was, but that didn't stop me from being creeped out by how this person weasels himself into Vivienne's life. The tension is very slow to build up and at times I did question if the book was heading to where I thought it was going because Vivienne is oblivious to what is really at hand, but it's there if you pay close attention. This book isn't a suspense book though, the most part is actually full of normal teen drama and what it implies of being in a relationship. A gold mine full of great advice (thanks Ms. Hove!) .
But get prepared to be annoyed by Vivienne as well. I think this book has one of the most infuriating main characters ever. Oh, I yelled a lot with this book. At times I just wanted to jump inside and shake some sense into the girl. I couldn't believe how naïve Vivienne was. She had this serious problem of not trusting her instincts and ignoring the warning bells from her mind, not to mention her knack of pushing away the people who actually care about her, and instead, letting inside the wrong ones.
I didn't actually hate Vivienne, but she wasn't my favorite. On the other hand, I think the rest of the characters were quite interesting. I loved how they proved me wrong and made me change my mind about them when they turned out to be so much nicer and more important to the plot from what I was led to believe. Declan is a super sweet guy and even his best friend, Nathan, is not that bad. I hope you get to meet them and see what I mean.
The way Slip ends left me with mixed feelings and a huge concern for the characters. I do believe they deserve a break after all they've been through, but sadly, things are not over for them yet. And, again, the thought about it creeps me out. I shudder to think what's in store for them in the next book because, I don't know how it can get crazier than what I read here. The worst part? Things like this do happen in real life. Will be keeping my eyes open much more thanks to this book.
*Read this review also at The Reader and the Chef. Thanks go out to the author for providing me a copy in exchange for an honest review.*
I received this book to give an honest review. *Spoiler ALERT* Never ever judge a book by its cover. If you saw this cover I know you would think oh lawd this is gonna be a sex book. Far, far from it. This is for a sure a YA story. You have the main character Vivien who is I don't want to use the word sheltered but that is how she comes across. She pretty much keeps herself busy in extra curricular activities, and school work. She does have friends but as they are "growing up" wanting to be part of the in crowd who parties, and hangs out she doesn't want that. She kind of reminded me of myself being that way in high school. I never did like the partying or drinking I would have rather stay home like Vivien did. So anyways, we watch as Vivien slowly moves out of her shell and that is thanks to Declan. He is a lacrosse player and Vivien has already pegged him as knowing the type of girls he likes and the way he acts. But we get to watch Declan prove that he is not like all the other guys he has grown up a bit. Now Vivien and Declan both play mind games with each other and it drives me absolutely batty. I mean he wants her to open up, she wants to but doesn't. Then he feels she is hiding something and she is, but she wants to tell him and at the same time she doesn't. And it goes back and forth like this through out the whole book. Vivien is a character I could have slowly strangled. While Vivien is starting out her relationship with Declan she is dealing with her mother who is hardly there along with trying not to crush on her French teacher. Who starts acting inappropriately towards Vivien. Now she has got to try to keep things with Declan going smoothly while keeping professional with her teacher. But as we progress through the story we learn that her teacher is not all who he seems to be.
What was never made fully clear to me is why was he keeping tabs on her, it was like he had an obsession which in a way I could understand why but I wanted to know more.
The author did a great job with character building, and creating a believable plot in some spots. My favorite parts through out the story was reading the Pearls of wisdom by Ms. Hove. I want to write more but I know I will be giving away key things from the story.
I got this book from the First Read Program from Goodreads. First note: Leslie is super cute, she wrote me a note on a pink heart-shaped note- so Thank you Leslie!
Here goes me thoughts on the book. The plot is very interesting because it is quite unique and different. The French teacher creeped me from start to end (which Lesley did a very good job- because I don't get creeped out very easily while reading a book). Declan on the other hand, is awesome! I love the way he tries to convey his love to Vivian. Declan is hands down my favorite character in the book. He's straight forward, cool, and very likable (and I ended up liking his asshole best friend a lot too). Vivian- the main girl, annoyed the heck out of me. I know she supposes to make stupid mistakes because she had a hard life. But realistically? I don't think many girls would fall for the same mistakes that she made. Honestly, when something bad happened to her at the result of her actions, sometimes I can't help but think to myself "serve you right." I know it's messed up, but hey- I cannot stand so much of her annoyance.
I gave it a 3 mainly because I don't see much of a development in each character. The plot is very interesting once again, yes. But if I can't bring myself to like the main character, then I don't think I can give it more than 3 stars.
Won this book from first reads!! Which by the way was sent by the author herself, arrived very quickly and with a cute heart-shaped personalized note inside. Very sweet touch. On to the book:
Soon to be seventeen year old Vivien is falling in love for the first time. Due to a rocky childhood she is a very reserved and guarded girl making her first real relationship a little tough to handle. Throw in the handsome, young and understanding exotic French substitute teacher and things get more complicated than ever. He befriends Vivien and in her quest to open up, try new things and finally let people in she turns a blind eye to the dangers right in front of her.
I LOVED this book! Two nights in a row I had to force myself to put it down so I could get some sleep. I thought the characters were complex enough to be consistently interesting and the story line was exciting even in the more mundane parts.
I cannot wait to read more in this series or more from Leslie J. Portu in general. I must add I did not see an editor listed and was pleasantly surprised to see very little, maybe even no, grammar or spelling errors.
First off, in the effort of full disclosure, I received this book as part of the FirstReads program here at GoodReads.
I liked this book. To be honest, from the blurb and the oh-so-pretty cover, I thought it was going to be your run of the mill teenybopper longing for romance read. Which I have absolutely no problem with. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the depth of the book. The author has a fantastic grasp of language and dialogue and I found the way she strings words together to be very pleasant to read. I wish I could explain this better. I'm actually making a wave motion with my hand trying to describe the wonderful flow in which she writes.
The book sucked me in right away and kept me hooked. I'm very appreciative that I received a copy, complete with a lovely note from the author herself!
I won this book through GoodReads Giveaways! It came in the mail with a little note from the author herself! When i first started to read it i was a little doubtful, her language was very descriptive and for awhile it seemed like the whole book would be slow.As it turned out i was completely wrong! The book was AMAZING! It reminded me a lot of myself. 17 years old- i feel like i could relate to Vivien, the long for love, for relationships that matter. I was very much interested in the first part, written in more or less a"chick" type of book. Later on i was even more interested when the book became a little suspenseful, it only added to the book and made it better. Needless to say i read the whole book in less than 3 days! Thanks so much Leslie for choosing me as one of your winners!
Won this book is a first reads giveaway and really liked it. It tells a great story of what it's like to be a teen and the things you go through. It's almost like a coming of age story, finding out who you really are and how much you want to risk. Some people are scared to show others who they are, they show parts of themselves but never the whole thing. This is what Vivian was going through.
I don't normally read books like this, but I really liked this one. It's full of surprising twists and turns and interesting characters. I'm really glad I entered to win this book.
