What did I do to end up in this nightmare? One minute Franklin Bryant is a normal teenager in school with his girlfriend, Krystal. The next, a reaper leaves him in Trance, the place between worlds where his destiny will be decided. Franklin has been summoned by the demon Charon to help destroy the Mystyx, a group of classmates including Krystal, with supernatural powers that can defeat Charon.
Franklin loves Krystal, but he faces an impossible choice: join Charon and be rewarded with powers beyond his dreams, or refuse and die....
I am the first born and only girl in my family, and six and nine years separate me and my two brothers. Needless to say, I was alone quite a bit. But being alone gave me plenty of time to indulge my imagination in the world of books. One of the first novels I read was a young adult series that traced the lives of two teenagers in high school, Sweet Valley High. Reading those novels I thought I could do better, and so my quest to write entertaining stories began.
Being an introvert, it took me a long time to feel comfortable enough to let others read my work. How long? Well, the first person to read a story I wrote was my husband. Since then, I’ve been writing professionally for almost nine years now. But it was my daughter who encouraged me to write a book for teens—just one of the reasons I love her so dearly.
I live in Maryland with my husband and three children. If you take away the opinionated teenagers, family drama, overflowing bookshelves and DVDs, my life is pretty boring. But don’t take those things away, since they’re my inspiration.
I was pretty excited when I discovered this through my travels here through the free ebooks. I've loved the series so far and I figured that this novella would give me more of that addictive storytelling that I've come to expect from this series. For the most part, I got it.
This story takes place between books 2 and 3, so if you haven't read up to that point then you won't be able to follow along all that easily. It's expected that you know what the major plot points are as well as who everyone is. It's not a good starting place for new readers.
My biggest problem with this was the shifting between tenses at the beginning of the novella. The storytelling would shift from Franklin's POV to an omnipresent one at the drop of a hat, which really took me out of the story at time. Eventually this smoothed out and Franklin's narrative took over, at which point the story really takes off. I loved getting a look into Franklin's head, to explain why he'd make a choice like this. It's definitely something I'm glad I read.
For people who have read the series up to this point, it's a must read.
so far: meh. present tense to past tense and back again in the same paragraph, not working so well for this story. i've tried to finish this very short story several times, but each time i pick it up to read it again, it is so confoundingly confusing and disjointed, i can't take it. i'm stopping now.
Poorly written - incomplete sentences thoughts and actions of the main character....story makes no sense...do yourself a favor and do not read!!!! Absolutely horrible from beginning to end!!!! If I could have given it negative stars - I would have!
I absolutely love the Mystyx novels, they are intriguing! I have read them all and can't wait for the now the series ends!! I'm hooked since reading Manifest, then Mystify, Mayhem was great then Mesmerize left me wanting more!!!
