Amelia Bedelia is sick the day her class goes to visit the zoo. She doesn't want to be left out, so she comes up with a brilliant idea--she'll create a zoo in her backyard, using all her classmates' pets. But she doesn't know exactly how to tell her parents about her great plan.
Herman Parish (born 1953) is the author of Amelia Bedelia children's book series, nephew of original author, Peggy Parish. Having grown up with his aunt’s tales of Amelia’s humorous misadventures, Herman decided to carry on the legacy after his aunt’s death in 1988. He did not wish to entrust the future of the series into the hands of a children’s author outside of the family. Since Peggy had the summers off from teaching, she was able to stay with the Parish family for extended periods of time, allowing Herman and Peggy to develop a close relationship. More importantly, this gave Herman a chance to keenly observe Peggy during her writing processes, gaining great insight to the road ahead of him. To carry on the essence of the series, Herman thoroughly examined his aunt’s work and did his best to capture what exactly made the character of Amelia Bedelia such a hit. Having editor Susan Hirschman and illustrator Lynn Sweat in common with his aunt helped to make the transition. He has added thirteen more books to the series. Herman is a resident of Princeton, New Jersey, and travels to libraries and schools across the United States, speaking and inspiring young children. The importance of revising and editing is often stressed during these dynamic lectures. He has presented to students in more than 22 states.

I love all of the creative outdoor play that is highlighted in this book. Unfortunately, it promotes lying to parents and so I will be donating our copy.
This is a fun series to read with my seven year old granddaughter. The word play is humorous and a great instigator for discussing the pitfalls of the English language. This is the 4th in the series of chapter books. Amelia Bedelia misses out on a class field trip to the zoo, due to illness, an event everyone can sympathize with. This leads to great collaboration and creativity with her classmates in the construction of a zoo in her back yard. Chaos and fun ensue.
I bought these books for Kayla, so naturally I read them first so I could talk to her about them.. cute stories but the characters quirkiness was annoying. But maybe that's because I'm old though, lol. I'll ask Kayla what she thought after she reads them.
Amelia Bedelia is sick on her class field trip to the zoo. A week later Amelia decides she wants to make a zoo in her backyard. She invites all of her friends and tells them to bring their pets and stuffed animals. And so they made the zoo.
I am not a fan of Amelia Bedelia picture books. I fully anticipated not liking this book either. But was pleasantly surprised. I saw it in our library and wondered if it should be part of a series section designed to hook reluctant readers. It is a chapter book that reads at around an M in Fountas & Pinelle. Around the same level as Capital Mysteries and A-Z Mysteries.
This is a great little book about a young Amelia Bedelia. The story begins with Amelia missing the school field trip to the zoo because she is sick. Her classmates feel bad for her and get her a spider monkey stuffed animal. The toy and the class research project on zoo animals gets Amelia thinking... why not create a "zoo" in her backyard! The whole class gets involved.
Are you interested in teaching maps? Maybe launching a PBL (project-based learning) unit? This book would be a great way to kick off those ideas. Amelia plans out her zoo, brainstorms with her classmates, works on setting up the zoo, revising as she goes. All the steps to a PBL are here!
And for the hard core Amelia Bedelia fans - rest assured, her name is always written as Amelia Bedelia and there are a few of her funny misinterpretations of common sayings.
Amelia Bedelia is back in another adventure that is sure to please early grade and some middle grade readers in this fun, illustrated (line drawings) chapter book. When Amelia Bedelia is sick and has to miss the class field trip to the zoo, she comes up with a Big Idea about how to make-up for missing out on all the animal fun. As usual, the best part about any Amelia Bedelia story--the fact that Amelia takes everything LITERALLY--is again included in this fun-to-read, action-packed story.
What does Amelia Bedelia learn about monkeys when she is home sick? Who eats all the bananas in this adventure? How many different animals will be present in Amelia's backyard?
The answers to these and other questions await young readers in the fourth book of the Amelia Bedelia chapter book series...Amelia Bedelia Goes Wild.
My little sister bought this book at a fair and naturally, it being a kids book, I didn't think I'd like it but I didn't have any new books to read so I gave this a try.
It's so cute!! I love how she planned to make a zoo - there's a drawn map inside even! (both the before the zoo is made in her backyard and after) And everyone brought a pet to add in it for their mini-zoo. It's really fun and kind of touching at the end regarding one of the pets (not spoiling). And Amelia trying to trap a monkey is fun to read. There are illustrations, too which made it better. I didn't expect to enjoy a kiddie book but I did and I find myself rereading it when I need something fast and cute to read.
3.5 stars I read this in installments on my readalong page at facebook.com/readwithmschandra. I fondly remember Amelia Bedelia from my childhood and thought this would be a good fit for an early chapter book. Overall, love the creativity that goes into planning the zoo. The classic Amelia Bedelia misunderstandings are quite uneven and seem a little forced in some spots. That may also not have across in a read aloud. A couple strange things in this book including a dead lizard frozen in a block of ice on display and its subsequent funeral. I would check out other books in this series but I’m not sold on it.
I'm torn. On the one hand, it's a cute book. On the other, why on earth is it an Amelia Bedelia book? I have 0 issues with rebooting the character. But this version bears no resemblance to the previous version. At all. It's a completely different character and her misunderstandings have no impact on the plot whatsoever. Still, it's a really sweet story about starting a zoo with friends. I just think it would work better if it was a new character entirely.
We're so proud of you for reading "Amelia Bedelia Goes Wild!" by Herman Parish. Through this fun-filled adventure, you've learned the importance of embracing new experiences and being open to change. Remember, darling, that life is full of surprises, and sometimes the best adventures come from stepping out of your comfort zone. By being curious and adventurous, you'll discover new passions and make unforgettable memories. Love, Mom and Dad
This was a cute chapter book, but it didn't feel as Amelia-Bedelia-y as I sort of expected. There were a number of misunderstandings in Amelia's mind over colloquial phrases, but it was mostly just her wondering about them rather than acting on them, which is a huge part of the original series. Fun, but just not quite what I was expecting.
4.5 stars. This was another really fun one. Amelia Bedelia misses the zoo field trip because she's sick so she decides to team up with her classmates to make her own zoo in her back yard. There is a monkey that escaped from the zoo that Amelia Bedelia is trying to catch. Super cute and definitely inspired some creativity and project planning in my daughter!
This is very cute. Amelia Bedelia's literal bent is preserved from the original series of books, but she's a kid instead of an adult maid in this series. Lots of information layered in illustrations and handwritten text throughout the book.
Another punny installment from the life of Amelia Bedelia. This book starts with a very sick Amelia Bedelia missing her class trip to the zoo. In the end, she manages to replicate the experience though it drives her folks a little wild.
I’ve read this book sooooo many times, it’s super funny. Amelia Bedelia tries to start a zoo at her home, and well, it goes wild! Highly recommended to humor fans!
