Being one of the first people to read his book long before it could hit the shelves, I feel privileged to know this author and call him one of my closest friends.

With an engaging plotline and characters we can all relate to, sometimes even aspire to be, Richard has written a work of fiction that is as memorable as it is simple. It's not everyday you read a book that stays with you long after the last page has been turned. Then again, it's not everyday you read a book so simple it attains a high level of elegance and teaches you far more than any epic saga you may have enjoyed leaping into.

What I personally took back from "I Played A Game With Life" is that the heart hurts more than it soothes. However, it's that very heart that nurtures the will to become better than who we are, aspire to impossible dreams and actually -- when the moment is right -- find that dream.

From dollops of inspiration to some of the most beautiful literary romances I've read so far in my life, Richardson Susairaj's debut novel "I Played A Game With Life" has what it takes to set the standard for Indian books of this specific genre. I do not say this because I'm his close friend, and you'll know I don't when you get your own copy to read once it's out.

Richardson is, in my opinion and as I've already told him countless times to his roll-of-the eyes ire, the Nicholas Sparks of India.

As everyone mentioned - its simple, realistic and the characters are knitted so meticulously. Especially, I love the connections. Each chapter fits the bill. For a week I had a hard time to let the characters go off my mind as if they are real. Not only the characters looked real, I felt like I'm in the story.

After reading, every girl would wish for a guy like Sam, however my favorite is Harish!! - Humor part is portrayed so well ,even a moron would laugh his guts out! Harish and Sam, wow can't find a better combination of friends. Damn, sense of humor is awesome man. There is no part, which is irrelevant, and the characters which appeared even for a scene can make a great impact.

What really thrills me is the fact that, this book changed my life. A beautiful message conveyed at its best.! Take life in a playful way and anything that your heart wishes comes true, perhaps it is destined to. For one thing, I would recommend this book 'coz this will turn out to be your story.

Well done for a debut novel! And, oh yeah, I feel more honored than anyone 'coz I was the first one to read it!

Okay, so that was the first book of Review Week, a self-designated week in which I'm gonna read only the books I'm supposed to review.

'I Played A Game With Life' is the story of an ordinary guy named Sam, who is about to graduate from college & step out into the tough world, eager to follow his passion. The plot starts off with our dear protagonist waking up from a strange dream & finding out that he has been dumped by his girlfriend. Before he has even recovered from the shock of it, he meets the girl of his dreams. Romantic sparks fly & before he realises it, he is heads-over-heels in love with her. But Life has something else in store for him & everytime he feels everything's going too well, Life seems to have a trick or two up its sleeve. Will Sam triumph over all this or will he submit to whatever awaits him?

The book has its moments, but you get the feeling that they are too good to last & unfortunately that's what happens. The fact that Sam is someone like you & me should ideally make you root for him as the underdog, but that is not the case often coz he seems to switch to slacker mode when he isn't wooing his girl, making him a bit annoying. A hurried & muddled climax doesn't really help - it seems contrived & too many things are happening at the same time.

The writing is okay but could've been better. Also, there happen to be a few printing bloopers that aren't exactly hard to miss. I wonder what the proof-readers & editors were doing, since I believe it's their job to give a final, polished touch to the book. That is some extra effort that must be made if you're to keep the reader from getting irked & I hope the same is rectified in the following edition.

So I'm going for a even-stevens rating of 2.5 stars for Susairaj Richardson's debut novel 'I Played A Game With Life'. Recommended only for readers of Indian popular fiction.

P.S. I received a free copy from the author, and I solemnly maintain my review was in no way influenced by the same.

It's been a very long time since I read an actual Novel but this one caught my eye when Richard handed over his work for my Review. Basically I am not much of a Reader but still I do read a few. This one stands out from the few that i read.

So going really into the review of I played a Game with Life, I completed this book in 5 days which really took me by surprise because my previous best was 7 days for Sidney Sheldon's Best Laid Plans (I know it's a very old one but still that's me - a meager reader). It really kept me hooked on 'you know' even during my work hours and I actually had to postpone few of my work to the next day, everyday until I completed this :) That's the power of Romance even if it is not yours :)

I should say for a first timer, this is just a professional and knowledgeable approach of how an Author should be. Storyline, Narration, Plots, Characters and more were all intertwined to put up a very good show.

I Played A Game With Life - Worth Playing :)

"I played a game with life...." sounds interesting... isn't it? I bet on it... It is interesting... Being one of the readers who could read it before it came out, I have so many things to say but would shorten up here... The characters, to start with, were god damn realistic... I could easily relate to them... Every character was written and executed in such a way as if they are the readers friends... Loved the flawless writing... Super duper hit plot... In the era of college love and romance, this book is wow.. way out of the league... I can sense a bestseller here!.. Trust me on that... A few silly mistakes are there but I might call them typo's other that silly mistakes! ^_^ But, Ya, one thing I can sign on stamp paper is that... This book is truly motivational! Super Duper Blockbuster Hit... As we say in Bollywood ... it is a 100cr book! Richie, sweets, all the best for this... And U will rock! ^_^
PS- I want my treat once this book is on the best seller list!

I had a chance to read this book before it has hit the bookshelves, thanks to my interactions with Richard. Though not my favorite genre, the book did keep me engrossed especially after the female protagonist enters the story. For a debutant, Richard has done quite an impressive job. His writing style, though very informal is utterly likable thanks to its sarcastic undertone. What really clicks in the story is the realism of the characters. A simple story of a guy who wishes to pursue his dreams , the challenges life throws along his way and how each of the people in his life play a role in shaping his future.

A breezy read for those lazy afternoons over the weekend.

It was indeed a privelage and a honor for me to read richie's debut novel before the book officially hits shelves across all the bookstores in India and abroad. Before i write this review, i would like to wish richie all the success and motivation he needs and indeed deserves for his debut novel. Looking forward to read your next ventures as well richie.

To be very honest i am not a great fan of reading books. When richie told me to give his debut novel a read, i was hoping to finish it in time and give him my suggestions. The minute i started reading, i was totally engrossed into the plot. The characters in the book are people that we come across in our day to day lives and we can relate to as well. A simple message that every human being needs - nothing is impossible. Romance is aessential part of everyone's life and has been put very beautifully in the book. For a average reader like me, the book has a very good pace. There were no portions or parts where i got bored or thought "ok, lets stop here for now".

From a guy who is not into books, i can honestly say that this novel will definitely set standards for indian authors like richie and many more who are out there that are yet to come. Richardson has all the potential and talent to take him to great heights.

As far as i know as a beginner reader, i feel its the simple yet deep storyline. Just gets on to you as you cover every word in it.I bet every person would dream to have a life like this, and still some cherish it.And Richard brought it out as we would expect it. Never i felt the stress to read it. And yet have some deep storyline. The main part that i feel is that, it reaches out to you and stoers in you with ease. I don generally review books, but hear i feel the urge to tell something about this book to everyone. Every character is distinct and is special in their way. Each chapter shows something different you could'nt think about. And finally take it on well to end it with a moral. Sure everyone expects a message, here the message is more intense and common moral that no one has an idea about!.To be simple, Its A Common Relationship Issue, That Takes You On To Life's every corner, every peak !!! Yet Proves Strong !!!

Cant believe that this is Richard's first novel. When i read it for the first time, i was happily surprised. There is a professional touch in his narration. What impressed me the most is that i was able to relate to a lot of scenes depicted in this book. It was as if i was reading about the incidents that happened in my own life. I am sure that several youngsters will feel the same when they read the book. Richard has masterfully managed to portray the life of a typical guy living in Chennai. Am sure that each and everyone who read this book will find some chapters that bring back great memories from their own lives. A definite page turner. And hopefully a bestseller. All the best Richard!!!

I PLAYED A GAME WITH LIFE by RICHARDSON SUSAIRAJ, is a story of 21 years old SAM JOHN, a Chennaite, who's a great movie freak, big time TV fanatic, adores acting, and his excruciating journey of 3 odd months. He is confused, stupid, idiotic & intelligent in his own way. The novel is about LIFE playing a game with SAM, that teaches him the lessons of his life and his dream of getting enrolled in The Tiffany School of Film, situated in Los Angeles.

Other novels alike, this novel evidently starts off on a promising note, where the writer has taken every minute details into consideration while making the readers familiar with the situations and the plot in precise & facetious manner. The writer has used juvenescent words sarcastically to get instantly connected with the target reader- YOUNGSTERS. Witty and amorous dialogues are indeed the soul of the narration, which, albeit slow, at times dragging but Mr. Writer has done a fantastic job in maintaining the authenticity of the narration by the use of petite WORDS that compliment the ongoing. I must add that the writer has strong hold on English language and has bravura writing style. His writing has also seemed to have inspired from movies, be it South Indian, Hollywood or Bollywood. Some of the scenes seem to have taken straight from the movies. The chapters namely WHY THIS KOLAVERI DA ?, I WON'T TELL BUT I CAN SHOW, PREETHIS'S PLAN and LIFE'S GOING TO KICK YOU DOWN have been executed with utmost sincerity, dedication, maturity and concreteness that the readers can be proud of the writer. The subtle way of explaining the love making is indeed the highpoint of the enterprise which is truly touching that it outnumbered the flaws in the novel. The concluding chapters are the most heart-wrenching chapters, where the readers would throw their hearts to SAM. The extolments in the pre concluding scenes are filmy yet captivating and mesmerizing.

On the flip side, the narration is dragging at times, checks the readers patience in between the ongoings and the twists in the tale are virtually predictable. The scenes have been fitted snugly but minute handling of separating the chapters have been mislayed, which, in turn, gives the feeling of confusion as well and the writer sometimes failed to evoke interest because of the introduction and execution of unwanted scenes which are in abundance. The narration could have been crispier for much better impact, particularly when the writer seemed to have forgotten to focus on the main topic. There is not much happening also in some of the chapters in between. The novel seemed to have stood still in the middle. There are roughly 3-4 chapters which are aptly explained according to their chapter names.

On the whole, I would recommend this novel for a one time read merely for the sincere & honest effort of the first time writer Mr. Richardson. Don't expect the moon, have patience and hopefully the readers would end it with a brimming smile on their faces. Keep it up.

AN HONEST EFFORT.

'I played a game with life', the debut novel by S Richardson is indeed an honest effort. If you are a lover of the Indian Popular Fiction or the Young Adult fiction, this one is for you.

The Prologue had took me by surprise. It was a completely new perspective. And, I thought out loud, “Finally, we have a distinguished voice in the Indian Popular Fiction” only to get a patronising look from my Roomie who literally hate the kind of books.

Never did i know i was going to have a heart break in the very next page. Here, there was, once again the same Heart-Broken-Cool-Dude writing style that has become the signature of Indian Pop Fic. One Chetan Bhagat was boring enough.

All that said, I am not a hater of Indian Pop Fic. On the other hand, I am grateful. It brought back the habit of reading in Indian Youth, including me. :)

Back to the book,

Yes, the book and the author has their high points like in the Prologue. But, none of them lasts long enough to make an impression. Every interesting part of this book is followed by an inappropriate sequence or by a premature handling of the sequence. Well, coming to think about it, we could say,its analogous to the ups and downs in life(of the protagonist).

Although, the plot is nothing fresh nor is the writing, the book is a breezy read. The characters are lovable and you would usually find them next door. The plot is a neatly presented Every-College-Boy's fantasy and just what the readers of this book would love. Some scenes are inspired by the movies, but some mature handling makes them tolerable or rather interesting.

But the best thing about the book is that, it is all positive energy and it starts radiating right from the cover. It gives also gives a new perspective of looking at LIFE: “Life is playing a game with you. Gear up and Join the Game!!”.

NB: A good editor and better type setter can really improve the reading experience.

A regular story about a guy named Sam with whom you can relate in no time... and the normal problems of life he faces, specially with his dream of becoming an actor which somehow no parent can take willingly (I wonder what universe the actors who keep on saying their families were always supportive of them through all their struggle, belong to...)
What's made perfectly clear, though in undertones is the fact that Sam is a very decent (read, perfect gentleman boyfriend type) guy, which is why he ends up with Amrita who is quite a catch, obviously.

The portrayal of Sam's life with his family and friends need mention... it's one of the parts of the story that remains with you. I'd also like to mention a personal favorite of mine, the character of Lakshita Charu... may be because I related to it through childish experiences of my own.
However, it is also true that many parts of the story could have been left out... the part about a long-lost father for instance, felt too dramatic and forcefully brought into the scene.

Having said all that, I played a game with life is easily a satisfactory read over a long journey.... you'd feel refreshed and looking forward to whatever you came for on reaching destination, for it's one of those stories which ends with a hope... the kind I love the most! For as the author, who also happens to a friend of mine, once said to me: Life is amazing... I think he manages to convey that even without saying it out loud. And for that magical feeling, it's worth a read.

I played a game with life is a story of an ordinary guy narrated in an extraordinary way.A simple sweet book that keeps you interested throughout.Sam's dream appears to the world too big according to a normal chennai guy, but that's what drew my attention more how can others judge an individuals dream?sams struggle the way he handles situation keeps us more interested and how can i miss author richardson's sense of humour which makes it more interesting and specially the way the characters are framed it makes everything look so real. MY favorite is Harish apart from our hero sam.The cover page and not to forget the way of narration makes it more interesting.overall this book is just awesome worth reading .everyone should join this game.

I played a game with life is a story of a typical indian guy with his big dreams ambitions . Its a story of humour ,of friendship , of love & of dream chasing . Its a debut of S. Richardson & he presnts to us a mordern version of ROMANTIC-COMEDY. Sam with his big drems & not so supportive dad want to become an actor but life presents him with difficulties & problems . He still manages his journey when a girl enters his life he falls for her. Sam's dad gets frustrated on hearing his dreams & throws him out of his house. While our hero gets shelter at his best friend & the main comedian of the story Harish & manages his journey to achieve success he gets his lady love but life doesnt allow his his happy ending so easily & present him with new difficulties . Our hero is seen losing hope but S.Richardson gives him his happy ending at last. You just need to be a part of this journey to explore more. I recommend it to all those Dreamchasing younsters with not so supportive parents.

I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review, so I'll say this as honestly as possible that this book was amazing. I mean at first I thought that it is the same typical romance novel that we come across everyday but I still can't make out the difference in this one. Probably it is the writing style that exactly matches the way the youth of today speak. It was a rather simple read, easy to comprehend and understand and I enjoyed it thoroughly. Truthfully it was so fluent that it was hard to put down and I was reading it at every possible instant.
As for the story, it is pretty close to reality. The problems that a youth faces to follow his dreams and the way his parents are uncertain about him is pretty relatable to what we hear everyday. All the characters fitted their roles perfectly and knitted the life of a regular Indian guy remarkably well. So yeah, this book was a thumbs up from me and it is a great start for Richardson in the writing career.

I played a game with Life
By S. Richardson
Review By Ila Garg

I Played A Game With Life, a novel by the debutant writer S. Richardson is published by Parlance Publishers Pvt. Ltd. The cover designer Jimmy Eric, has well portrayed life in the cover. The front representing day and the brightness while the back contrasting it and depicting night, darkness. The moment I saw the cover, I knew I have to read this. The title is intriguing equally, tempting me further to own this book. So when Richardson sent this book to me for reviewing, I was glad.

The blurb reads as, “Will one young man’s hurts, disappointments and pressures lift him up to greatness or will he submit to mediocrity?
Sam, a typical guy, living life happy and carefree, but has an ambition that far exceeds what a normal Chennai boy can aspire to. Encountering ‘Life’ itself in a dream, he’s convinced into playing a game with it. A game that ends when Life's travails get so hard that Sam is pushed to tears.
A girl enters Sam’s life when he least expects it. The moment he sets eyes on her he knows she’s going to play hard to get. Sparks do indeed fly and before long the two find themselves in a world of romance.
Though Sam’s attitude about living life is to be happy and cool, he finds all of that being tested. Circumstances push him into a world of discomfort, guilt, heartbreak and confusions.
Amidst such emotional turmoil, he manages to grip on to hope and still enjoys life. One event after another pushes him to an edge.
Does Sam find a way to win the game? Or will he spiral into what so many people who've given up the fight have fallen into? You simply need to be part of his life to find out.”

As I read through the novel I played a game with Life, I could actually feel as if I am watching a movie. It has a great potential. The story moves on a comfortable pace, easy language ensures that readers will not find in difficult to read.

Prologue of the novel is written with a clear vision, enhancing the interest of the readers. And this interest is maintained well till the end.

Initially there is nothing different that Richardson offers us in the book. It’s the same old tale with slight twists. But gradually it captures. The Hindi words used could have been a little crisper. The flow of words was good yet the incidents and character introductions were a little fragmented.

The story revolves around the main protagonist, Sam his never ending woes with his family, his newly found love Amritha, an uber cool super rich girl, his friend Harish & his girlfriend Preethi and some relatives and his professional life which is in a terrible mess as no one is in favour of him becoming a Hollywood Actor. A person with big dreams and ambitions to fulfil finds himself at crossroads when his father doesn't supports him in the cause and his struggle to set things right becomes a tough task. Some sparkling revelations later on turns his life upside down and then people around him set out to make life easier for Sam, especially his best friend. It's a story about lost hopes, fading ambitions, silence of an innocent soul, intense love for a girl and in the end the price he pays for each and everything. But somehow it’s worth it.

This 245 page book contains 46 chapters. Well written yet dragging at some points. Readers might find the end too predictable. At some phases, I felt the story is going way too beyond reality. It was more of a melodrama created for the readers to enjoy.

The too many insecurities in Sam’s love life is just one of the reasons you want to keep turning the pages to find out what happens in I Played A Game With Life. Another reason that would keep you glued to it would be to discover if he actually wins the game with life or not.

To find out whether he survives the absence of his ex-girlfriend and moves on with Amritha or not, will he be lucky in his career despite the turmoil, how he sets everything right towards the end; you will have to read the novel, I Played a Game with Life.

Foreword:

It has been sometime since I have received this book, but, finally, I got time to review it. Firstly, I must apologize to the author for the late review. There are so many books flooding in and so little time I have. It has been quite a feat for me to take time for reading. I think I must take out more time for reading. However, first is first. That is one reason we stopped accepting any and every author that have contacted us for reviewing. Hope, I get done with the tbr stack ASAP.

Plot (from GoodReads):

SAM, a typical guy, living life happy and carefree, but has an ambition that far exceeds what a normal Chennai boy can aspire to. Encountering ‘Life’ itself in a dream, he’s convinced into playing a game with it. A game that ends when Life's travails get so hard that Sam is pushed to tears.

A girl enters Sam’s life. The moment he sets eyes on her he knows she’s going to play hard to get, but sparks do indeed fly between them, taken into a world of romance.

When everything looked like its going according to the plan, it just wasn't. This is when Life starts pressing down on Sam. Though Sam’s attitude about living life is to be happy and cool, he finds himself being tested.

Circumstances pushes him into a world of discomfort and guilt. Amidst such emotional turmoil, he manages to grip on to hope.

Sam is expected to worry, complain, and give up. One event after another sets him on edge to make him shed that tear which veritably ends Life's game.

Does he win the game with Life, or will he spiral into what so many people who've given up the fight have fallen into? You simply need to be part of his life to find out.

About the author (from GoodReads, too):

Our review:
When I accepted this book for reviewing, I was very elated. The cover design and also the title seemed catchy. As always, I go through the description. But, not to mention, one of my friends was reading the same book. I was thinking of having 'read-along' with her. But I thought otherwise from the very moment I saw the insides of the book..................................
