The Hardy Boys #180

Typhoon Island

Rate this book
A Fantastic Vacation Becomes A Fight For Life Visiting San Esteban is supposed to be a vacation for Frank and Joe Hardy and their friends, but it doesn't take long for them to realize that the island is no paradise. Some of the local inhabitants aren't very friendly to tourists, and the island itself is crawling with dangerous wild animals -- some of which take up residence in the Hardys' bungalow. As if this isn't enough to worry about, someone starts dogging the Hardys every step of the way. Is this person responsible for most of the "bad luck" they've had? Not even the worst villain, though, could arrange the typhoon that turns all of San Esteban into a death trap. Can the Hardys solve the mystery of Typhoon Island before they're wiped off the map?

Franklin W. Dixon is the pen name used by a variety of different authors who were part of a team that wrote The Hardy Boys novels for the Stratemeyer Syndicate (now owned by Simon & Schuster). Dixon was also the writer attributed for the Ted Scott Flying Stories series, published by Grosset & Dunlap.
Canadian author Leslie McFarlane is believed to have written the first sixteen Hardy Boys books, but worked to a detailed plot and character outline for each story. The outlines are believed to have originated with Edward Stratemeyer, with later books outlined by his daughters Edna C. Squier and Harriet Stratemeyer Adams. Edward and Harriet also edited all books in the series through the mid-1960s. Other writers of the original books include MacFarlane's wife Amy, John Button, Andrew E. Svenson, and Adams herself; most of the outlines were done by Adams and Svenson. A number of other writers and editors were recruited to revise the outlines and update the texts in line with a more modern sensibility, starting in the late 1950s.
The principal author for the Ted Scott books was John W. Duffield.

Finally gave this HB book a read! I started it yesterday and finished it this morning and OMG, it was such an awesome read! I read it on a rainy day-the perfect time to read this book! :) My rating for it is almost 4.5. I really enjoyed it! I seemed hesitant to read it at first but wow! It was way better than I expected it to be! This HB book was a survival story. In it, the Hardys and their GFs, Callie and Iola, travel to San Esteban for vacation, but their vacation didn't turn out as expected. There was a really bad hurricane, which didn't let them enjoy their vacation. Not only that. Also, there was trouble in paradise, and the Hardys had to figure out who was responsible for all the bad luck they've had. For instance, fire in their bungalows, their jeep tires blown out, things like that!
It was such an awesome read! My only complaint is, I didn't really get the culprit's motive for doing all that. Otherwise, I really enjoyed it though! I would definitely give it another read sometime in the future. I never knew I would enjoy it that much! Good thing I gave it a go! Well, to be honest, I didn't really enjoy the beginning much as I was still hesitant but the rest, I was hooked!
Again, great read!

I feel like if I wrote a full review of this I’d be repeating some of the things I said in my good reads review of another book from this series “wreck and roll.” So just go read that review as I think this still suffers from the same problems for the most part.

All I would add is this book is defiantly an improvement from that one (hence the extra star.) and if I had to pick between the two books as one to recommend it would be this one.

Objectively there is more going on here the characters feel less flat though still painfully average and don’t fully come to life at least here I can almost say everyone beyond the main cast of “the Hardy’s and their girlfriends.” All felt distinct.

The villain scheme well pointlessly convoluted was still more intricate and held a better satisfying answer to the “who done it.” Question with more buildup and motif than in wreck and roll too.

Unfortunately though this book suffers even more so then wreck and roll from being melodramatic. Some people complained that the start of the book was too slow and not intense enough, but honestly once the book got intense I eventually found it laughable how much bad luck the boys have. It escalates from their bungalows are on fire while their inside them to, their Jeeps tires got slashed, to the Hardy’s and their girlfriends are stuck in a horrible typhoon on foot to, their being shot at with blowguns, to a tree falls onto one of the Hardy Boys feet and he is injured, to their sliding off a rockslide dangling in a cartoonish way off the ledge over rushing water with rocks that if they let go will kill them, and if that’s not bad enough Frank (or was it Joe my bad if it was.) is hanging off no ordinary stick in a mountainside in a cartoonish way, but it just had to be a stick that had thorns in it so his hand is bleeding on top of all this.

Like give these characters a break they can only go through so much danger in one book before readers lose their ability to believe their really in perle or to care if they die since their just being tossed around into bad situations like crash dummies.

Although the danger did make it more interesting it also made me realize that if they can survive one unbelievably perilous thing their likely not dying any time soon and I just found I kept reading to figure out who did it and see how each chapter could possibly top itself in torturing these characters even more dramatically.

A better than average, very good but not spectacular Hardy Boys digest. Slow start and could've used more mystery scenes and clue stuff, but I loved the rain, the chases, the tunnels, and - most of all - the hurricane. They're stranded on an island with good reasons for not having phones and a friggin hurricane bears down on them, and the survival journey as it landed was pretty damn great, especially for a Hardy Boys book. Nice.

This one caught my eye at the library. There are several parts of this one that seemed over the top and implausible to me. Plus, the mystery kind of came out of nowhere and wasn't as well defined as other mysteries the boys have encountered. Just an okay read for me.

Love this Hardy Boys book! An awesome and exciting mystery with so much danger and excitement taking place on the island of San Esteban in the Caribbean! Joe's girlfriend, Iola, has a cousin, Angela Martinez, there, so that's really cool. Frank and Callie, Joe and Iola have a great setting, with an intriguing mystery for them to investigate, and lots of thrilling action. There are several suspects to decide about, too.

This book has some of the scariest scenes in any volume with the Hardy Boys' name on it!

Did I mention I love this mystery?? :D Check out the rest of my review @

This book was recommended to me, but I was kind of disappointed. The storyline to me just seemed kind of ehh. It seemed good at first. My favorite part in the book was when they were trying to get shelter at the hotel. But to me, it wasn't exactly survival. Of course they still were trying to survive from being 'killed' by the hurricane, but...its hard to explain. One thing I found annoying in the book was when the writers kept saying 'The Hardys and their girlfriends'. Once is fine, but it seemed anytime the writers wanted to mention Frank, Joe, Callie, and Iola at the same time they refered them as 'The Hardys and their girlfriends'. I just wish it was more of a survival story-but then again, this is a mystery book and the authors did their job writing it as a mystery.
