**Ordering details below** Look what the mailman dragged in today! My copy. Aaaghgh! It finally arrived.

Can I lick it?

YES I CAN!

So I suppose it's a good thing that I got impatient and tracked down another copy, because it took forever for this one to be shipped to me. The other one I swear I will not lick.

I'm going to post a few phone snapshots in a bit, but let me tell you this first: It's like In These Words was created especially for me. The art is super-gorgeous, never sloppy. The story itself so deliciously, excitingly twisted and sick. It has the exact sort of fucked up psychological experimenting in it that intrigues me.

Also, reading In These Words will make your IQ go up like 10 points, because they chose to present this yaoi in its original form. Meaning that you'll have to start at the other end and read from the right to the left, top to bottom, just not upside down. I love it! It adds to the atmosphere.

...my oh my...mindblowing art combined with an intense and dark and disturbing story..consider all my boxes ticked. Fuck yeah!

And although some reviewers mentioned that this should be called horror rather than yaoi, screw them! Screw everyone. To have someone lick your blood, to be told by a serial killer that he...well, see below..

Can it get any more swoon-worthy romantic than this?:p

I mean, LOOK AT IT..

Man, this is like being 11 years old all over again and falling in love with Cutter from freaking Elfquest. Look how spectacularly well they portrayed both MC's. Look at those emotions swirling through their eyes, look at those faces, those....ahhh!

Noooo Shinohara! Not all Dutch wives are boring...pick me! Pick me! Beh heh he.

Pom, pom, pom...

A bunch of tasty teasers....

Where to get your copy?
Since this was somewhat confusing to me, I included ordering details: Volume 1 (chapters 1-5) used to be $16,- on Amazon (€12,55). However, it's no longer in stock. So if you order your copy from Amazon, it'll probably never show up! Instead, you'll find mostly used copies on Amazon and Ebay with prices that will go up from $80,- to $300,-. The reason? Volume 1 is getting rare! This is what the authors had to say about it on guiltpleasure.tumblr.com:

"ITW manga’s been out of print a month after its issue. DMI (the licensor) had assured us that they will not be republishing that title nor others (except Hentai) until at least JUNE. We have no hand in printing and reprinting the manga. Please do write to DMI to encourage them to reprint the ITW manga or likely, your order from Amazon’s not going to happen."

I found that if you search the internet, there are still a few pretty decently priced copies out there. Another option is to buy the ebooks via Kobo. This will allow you to still read the chapters 1-5 (they're currently working on making 6, 7 and 8 ebook proof too). However, you have to take into account that the quality just isn't as amazing and your ebook may not be compatible with your ereader (at least not with my Sony), but I managed to read it just fine on my iPad. Otherwise, just order the individual chapters from the Guilt Pleasure website (if they're not out of stock again, that is. *sigh*).

Something else; In These Words has these bloody cliffhangers, so it's good to know that "It will be another year before we have enough material for Vol. 2 but we are likely to do a trade for chapter 6-10. For now, it is released chapter by chapter until then.

Anyway, if you'll excuse me? I'm going to try all of this stuff at home now. Bye!

Originally published as In These Words, Vol. 1

US-trained psychiatrist Asano Katsuya, is asked to extract a confession from a suspected serial killer. Due to the sensitive nature of the crimes the police wish to keep everything secret, so the psychiatrist has to interview the suspect in a locked house from a dilapidated part of town.

Shinohara for his part, is quite a piece of work, acting all friendly and unbothered by his fate. And much to Asano's consternation, he also reminds the psychiatrist of a faceless man from his nightmares. One who keeps declaring his love as he rapes the protagonist...

Asano shocked by the interview room

I've been wanting to get into dark romances for a while, but none of the romanticized violence or overall YA feel of them particularly appealed to me. This title has been popping up in my Google search results whenever I was looking for yaoi manga with pretty art. Given my recent(ish) liking for Japanese horror, I finally decided to give it a chance. And booooy does it deliver.

It feels rather misleading to call any part of this series a "romance", even though later volumes do contain a strong romantic subplot. But at least no one can accuse the author(s) of putting rose tinted glasses on the horror aspects. Then again, if you're squeamish about graphic violence I would strongly advise you to give this book a wide berth.

ominous dilapidated house

I know this is explained in the following volumes, but I had quite a few issues with the premise of the story. So the police chief sends Asano to extract a confession from the suspect. Which he does, like right away, because the guy at no point tries to deny any of the accusations. But for some reason this is not sufficient and Asano just keeps on having interviews with the creepy dude. The psychiatrist doesn't question any of this, presumably because he's too busy coping with his chronic headaches? Granted, I was also very very distracted by the beautiful artwork so maybe I just missed something.

Score: 4/5 stars

Having gone through all 4 released volumes, I should warn you that the series is actually not a Japanese manga, but rather an American doujinshi which is set in Japan. It's also incomplete, with the most recent chapter (not yet bound in a volume) released some 4 years ago.

By the way, if you're interested in the English edition be prepared to dig. On the Internet but also deep in your wallet. It's nigh' impossible to find, and when you do, it goes for insane prices. I've decided to go for the German translations, because I could get them fairly cheap from a second hand bookstore. Technically, I got the first three volumes in German, and the 4th one in Japanese (by mistake). Still, at least the latter came with an extra short story (Little by Little).

4 stars!

Holy shite! This one was a total mind f**k! I was so scared for Katsuya and this new case involving a serial killer. I'm not sure at this point WTH is going on! Is what we saw something from his past or is this just a brilliant plan to get on the killers mind? Well whatever it is can't to find out.

Meet my latest obsession...

A few years ago Nikyta introduced me to yaoi, and since then I've read a few here and there, along with some other styles of graphic art stories...especially the webcomic Teahouse (now that's another obsession of a different color). Then one day I was scrolling through all of the amazing photography "art" on Tumblr *cough*, and came across the cover art for In These Words and thought to myself, “Hmm, this is pretty!” And next thing I knew, I had read Chapter 1 (twice) on Kobo and ordered the paper version Volume 1 from Amazon Prime. So here I was, anxiously checking my doorstep for three days and the book NEVER arrives. NEVER!! All I can think about is one of my neighbors has received my package and is either closet-ly reading my smut, or burning it in their fireplace while they pray over the Bible. So I immediately contacted Amazon, and two days later I had the book in my hands! Of course I started with Ch 1 (again), then got halfway through Ch. 2 and put it down. Why? Because I knew right then that I didn’t want to continue reading until I had all 10 chapters (that are currently released) in my possession! Obsessed much?? Soooo, I have since read Ch 1-5 which are included in Vol 1. I'm stopping before I move on to Ch 6 to write an unswayed review covering only Vol. 1. You should feel special because all I really want to do is say fuck this review and get me some more Katsuya and Shinohara.

So why am I a bit obsessed with ITW? Well, umm, it touches all those dark, dirty kinks than even I don’t want to admit I find erotic in the light of day. Yes, there is non-con. Yes there is sadism. Yes, there is knife play. Yes, there are improbable declarations of love. But when Shinohara is fucking Katsuya and licking his blood and telling him that he loves him… Fuck it, I admit I’m disturbed! There’s just something about these two…and I NEED to know more.

So what is this story really about? Well, first there is Katsuya, a psychiatrist that has played the key role in profiling and capturing a serial killer…Shinohara. As Katsuya is about to be sequestered until he can extract a confession from Shinohara, he starts having sado-sexual dreams/nightmares of Shinohara holding him captive and raping him…yet, he has never met Shinohara. I really don’t want to give away anymore details of the plot, but Ch 5 ends with a huge cliffhanger. I mean HUGE that will obviously change the direction this story is headed. I have no clue where THAT is because I still haven’t gotten a grasp on what is really going on!!! And instead of finding out, I’m sitting here writing this stinking review!

*Focus Heather* So I’m supposed to be giving my opinion on Vol. 1, but I feel it is necessary that I bring the individual printed chapters into the discussion…the two just don’t compare! While Vol. 1 is compact and affordable, the individual chapters are GORGEOUS!! Larger and the covers are texture and beautiful! Quite pricey but totally worth it when you have an obsession like mine. (Denial at this point would be a joke.) Some chapters are available in eBook at Kobo…my obsession has yet to bring me that far.

The story is gripping.
The art is amazing.

What the fuck is going on!!!

This is a beautifully and well written manga. If you are looking for something more adult in the yaoi genre, this is the best. Very tightly written, with a good mystery wrap around some very attractive characters. This gets high marks and is great with multiple reads.

I bought the doujinshi one episode (1-7)at a time and I think if you can grab them, you should. The qualty of the printing and the cover textures are sinfully amazing. Now as for the storyline, holy crappola! I like dark and tangy, with a dash of Frank's red hot sauce but this has all the fixings that a dark minded gal like me loves.

You have an beautiful intellectual uke, Katsuya Asano who is brought into the picture by the police to get a suspected serial killer to confess. The killer, charismatic and deadly, Shinohara has requested the physcologist by name and will only cooperate with him. Once there, Asano begins to have horrific night terrors of rape and mutilation at the hands of an unseen assailant each night. During the day he spars with Shinohara while drawing out the chilling details of how the killer stalked his chosen prey.

At one point in a session Asano gets lost in a recollection, I'd call it post traumatic stress disorder (PTSP)and Shinohara strikes out like cobra, so quick and purposeful leaving Asano to be rescued by the cop watchdog. Shinohara gloats and informs Asano that he had the most satisfying orgasm when he returned to his room after that incident. Asano has pulled his professional facade back into place but Shinohara has seen the chink in the armor and has no qualms about exploiting it.

The graphics are just that...graphic. If darkness is not your cuppa, avoid this with all costs. However, I like this. I love this. I love the fact that there is more going on that simple dominance and brute strength. There are pages of text at the beginning of some chapters and they lay out the tone and scope of the upcoming scene.

PS:
Asano also appears in prequels: Father Figure - another dark distrubing piece and New York Minute - showing the beginning of his career in the States with a cop lover.

I got down on my knees before the GuiltPleasure table at Yaoi-con and asked about these books and these prequels take place about six years before ITW

Meisterhaft.

Damn, I wish life was like the music video Take on Me....

(That’s me and Katsuya by the way, soon he will break out to be with meee!)

The story in the first five chapters is chilling, brutal, awesome and addictive; A mass-murderer demanding to speak to one person only, the Psychiatrist and profiler that helped capture him. Now doesn’t that sound like a juicy premise! It is like watching an especially deviant psychological thriller (with a lot of non-con thrown in).
The pictures are very graphic, but oh-so-beautiful in their savagery. As many reviews have pointed out, this story is not for the sensitive.

I find myself already fangirling over the characters and everything related, and it only just started:-). Since all these stores end with QUITE some cliff-hangers, I am also happy that I entered into this universe relatively late, since all I have to do is keep reading. And thank you loederkoningin for having that hot picture on your profile, since I would never have found this series without it:-)

Now on to chapter 6.

From the synopsis, I expected this to be a dark story: a serial killer is willing to talk, but only to the police psychiatrist who helped orchestrate his capture. What I didn’t expect was the violent sexual imagery (since it’s listed as yaoi, I had anticipated Asano having a lover & romance outside the case). The book opens with a prose prologue, which is unusual in manga/yaoi. However, it was an excellent tool to give the reader background to set the stage. Soon after he agrees to interview the killer, Asano begins having horrific nightmares of being violently raped by him. And the first such nightmare immediately follows the prologue, in explicit detail. Thereafter, the story shifts between the actual interviews and Asano’s nightmares – all violent, vivid and extremely graphic.

I would not classify this as yaoi because it is not a love story; not even a so-called rape fantasy. I think this manga would be better classified as horror. Though they are nightmares (and not “really” happening), the sexual situations are disturbing, and involve bloodshed. This manga is not for the faint of heart. However, the graphic rapes do fit the serial killer storyline. I gave this five stars, not as a yaoi romance, but as a horror novel. Though the ending was predictable, I am still interested in reading volume 2. Especially considering this closes on a cliffhanger. Overall, recommended to those looking for a dark, edgy manga, but those expecting romantic yaoi should consider themselves warned.

Katsuya Asano is a psychologist who is called in by the police to interview a serial killer they've captured. During this process he begins having nightmares and flashbacks about his own possible abduction. While he tries to deal with the images invading his mind, he also has to deal with the serial killer who starts to take a particular interest in him.

Asano presents himself as a silent, strong character who deals with some of the darkest minds and personalities along with some of the most stubborn and macho policemen and detectives. You really start to see his strength and weakness come through in the flashes of his possible abduction and in dealing with the serial killer. There's two mysteries in this story so far, one being about the serial killer's victims and the other about Asano himself. Are the flashes he's getting of himself being abducted real or is it some type of psychological sympathy with the victims?

The story is interesting, the mystery pulls you in, and the artwork is gorgeous.

ITW is intense and covers the topics of murder and rape in graphic detail so, if you don't have a taste for these subjects or are sensitive to these themes, you might want to pass on reading this or read keeping the warning in mind.

2020 reread: I finally have all three volumes (in German) and it's a great psychological thriller. The art is really stunning too.

Initial review

First of all, let me gloat about the edition that I'm holding in my hands right now:

A few years ago, the German publishing house of Tokyopop had the genius idea of publishing certain works as "Perfect Editions", which are hard cover editions of the works with a bigger format and color pages inside.
Now, to why I am so happy I just spent 15€ on a two-hundred page manga:
In These Words is awesome!
Sure, this is just the first volume and it's pretty hazy in what's to come (and even what happened!), but the authors are doing their very best to create a perfect work of art inspite of Tokyopop's relentless efforts to ruin everything with their terrible translation.
And yes, the translation is quite awful. It's so awful I actually contemplated getting a kobo and spend dozens of euros just to read the original.
Tokyopop tried really hard to transform this manga into some normal yaoi, which was much more disturbing than the actual rape fantasy content of In These Words.

I won't say anything about the story because there isn't really much to say without spoiling everything...
but lest it to say that I can't wait for volume 2! I hope it comes out soon so I can get myself another hopelessly overpriced and mistranslated hard cover edition of it :)

Ok so if you are looking at this and thinking about reading it I just need to try to make you understand: this is an EXTREMELY explicit M/M manga with rape / non-con / gore / murder / mutilation / probably every other fucked up thing you can think of in it so if you don't like that or don't want to read things like that then you should definitely skip this one. I would recommend it to fans of Killing Stalking although this is [in my opinion] much more explicit and definitely gets to that point a LOT faster.

I am a bit disappointed with the actual plot at this point because I feel like it lacks a certain subtlety that other things like Killing Stalking have [or Hannibal or Killing Eve, but those are legit TV shows and not just glorified porn], but the art is absolutely GORGEOUS and there's sex in every chapter so I'm definitely enjoying it. ;) Also I was kind of confused about what was going at first but eventually figured out that the police-therapist guy is just having dreams about the murderer and that they hadn't actually met before [or at least I THINK that's what's happening, guess I'll have to read the next volume lol]

Reread 2/10/2015

If I look at my rating for each chapter it would be a 4 star read. But only since each taken for itself is just so short. As a whole I keep it 5 stars.

The drawings are awesome! I figure it's difficult to draw so expressive.

Since it's just the beginning of a very complex story there are many mysteries discovered but as good as nothing solved.

To be honest, if I wouldn't have bought the whole volume 1 which includes chapter 1-5 and had to purchase it over the webpage of Guilt Pleasure, I wouldn't have continued or even started the series. The shipping costs would have killed every interest I'd have had.

If non-con is a big no-no for you, you should think twice about reading!

**************************************************

Thanks to Therese who recommanded this piece of Art to me!

Since I read some mangas in my teens I didn't have to adjust too hard to the special reading. (Right to left.)

The pictures were drawn really great and the story was very intriguing!
But....

Aaaaaarg.... Bad cliffhanger!

I ordered In These Words, Vol. 2 right away and can hardly wait for it to arrive!

Another manga borrowed from Kati :-)!

Asano Katsuya is a highly trained psychiatrist who plays a crucial part in the capture a serial killer, Shinohara Keiji, who likes to torture his victims for weeks before finally killing them.

The case doesn't end there, however, as Shinohara will only give his confession to Asano. At the same time Asano starts to have nightmares about being captured and sexually tortured by Shinohara.

Warning! This is a very dark tale with graphic depictions of sexual violence and male rape, but I liked it.

I liked Shinohara's obsession with Asano, and how profiling Shinohara meant that the man was already under Asano's skin before they even started their sessions. I would have liked to see how things would have progressed after Shinohara got his hands on Asano for real, but Kati says there's no sign of a second volume.

Kati also says it reminds her of the TV show Hannibal and the little I've seen of the show so far, I would agree!

An intense psychological thriller, with a serial killer playing mind games with a psychiatrist. The illustrations are beautiful as the story is dark. These kinds of stories aren't really my thing, but I got caught up in Katsuya's confusion over his reactions to the killer. Is he having nightmares because he's empathizing with the victims? Are they portending future events to come, or are they manifestations of a previous connection with the killer? I hope these answers are revealed soon as the story ends in a major cliffie. Poor Katsuya I wonder what's going to happen. Definitely looking forward to reading the next volume.

Dark, gritty, mind twisting. Physiological thriller (volume 1) of a sexually violent serial killer and a physchiatrist who had profiled his capture. I'm a big fan of Jo Chen's (TogaQ) artwork and Neko knows how to write crime/police drama. These two make an excellent team!!
