Cheating, cheating and cheating. Did I mention cheating? Of course the betrayal is there too. It seems that if someone wasn't cheating or been cheated was betraying someone. Morgan, Carter and Ana were selfish, some more, some less. In the end I never really understood how Carter and Morgan ended up together.
The low rating is due to the flawed characters that never became better, my inability to see the connection between Morgan and Carter, the lack of many hot scenes and the fact that the book seemed to go nowhere.
I received an ARC of this from the author in return for my honest opinion.
This had all the ingredients for a really good story, but it didn't really work for me.
The biggest issue for me was the male protagonist, Carter. He was impossible to like. Yes so he was good looking and sexy etc but he was a player and he was ruthlessly ambitious too. I didn't have any confidence that he meant anything he said and because of that, I really didn't want Morgan to get together with him. They only seemed to bump into one another in bars where he'd wait until his girlfriend was out of the way before whispering suggestively in her ear. It hardly made for the most romantic seduction I've ever read.
Morgan's best friend Ana was also hard to like, and after the shocking revelation, I found it difficult to understand why Morgan continued to have anything to do with her. She was the female equivalent of Carter and as such, I thought they made the better couple; they're welcome to one another.
I would have been interested in understanding more about Morgan's rebound relationship with John, her grief counselor, but he faded away after a couple of encounters and wasn't mentioned again.
I liked the writing style and I would read more by this author, but the characters marred this story for me.
Received book from author in exchange for an honest review.
Morgan is suffering through the grieving process after the passing of her husband. The man that she thought was perfect. Trying to move on, but not willing to let go of the past. She wants to find love again - she wants to feel like she did when Eric was alive. When she meets Carter she feels a connection, but that connection is complicated by the fact that he is dating her friend. Carter has goals he needs to achieve in order to deal with the fact that he has issues with feeling like he would never amount to anything. He's the type of guy willing to sacrifice anything to get what he wants - to prove it to everyone else. But in the midst of finding his path to accomplish his end game he meets Morgan.
================
I am a little torn on my thoughts on this story. There is a theme of cheating that I always find difficult in reading; since I tend to look at these books as a means of escape and fantasy - it is a hard line to try to incorporate any type of infidelity into it. However, I did enjoy the story.
There were some minor issues with the editing process that can be easily overlooked and since it was a short read the story progressed quickly. Although not entirely my cup of tea, I would definitely read more things from this author. I can't really put my finger on it, but I enjoyed this story and needed to know what was going to happen next. Even with not having a lot of time to connect to either of the two characters, I needed Morgan to get her closure and I guess that means that I did end up connecting to her on some level. Carter, he seemed to have potential - if we had more time to really get into his past and his issues.
Overall it was a middle of the road read for me. I didn't fall completely in love with it, but I enjoyed it. I do wish we had more of Carter's back story.
Carter F’ing Sterling. That could just about sum up my review right now, but let’s start again.
This an emotionally charged novel that takes both its readers and its characters through the ringer and back again. Self-discovery is paramount, but it is interspersed with the worst side of relationships. Love does conquer all, but holy hell Hannah it’s one hell of a ride to get there, even if it is brief.
West creates a world that you find yourself trapped in, even if you want to climb out. The emotions that the characters experience are the same ones that you feel as a reader. Each and every moment that you spend with these characters, however brief, affects your life in one way or another. West gives you a new way to look at the world via her intricate descriptions and hard hitting storyline. Love and lust do conquer all, but they take a roundabout route to get there.
The characters that West presents her readers with complement and live out the storyline perfectly. This well developed and amazingly crafted characters the main characters are the type of individuals that you could find yourself living next door to, they are that real. The supporting cast is also quite well developed to fill their roles in the novel.
Overall, this is one of those books that lives on the cusp between 4 & 5 stars. The deciding factor was simply the fact that I was able to set the book down and carry on with my day before returning to the novel. However, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone who enjoys a bit of romance and a bit of drama.
Please note that I received this novel free of charge from the author in exchange for an honest review.
This book was given to me in return for an honest review!! Well I honesty loved it. I woke up at 2:00 am on Sunday morning just so I could finish it. Morgan is a broken widow and Carter is a somewhat damaged "player" they meet and man oh man do the sparks fly. The writing is superb and the story is all sorts of angsty and sexy. This book is an awesome read. Even though its not as long as most books I read Ms. West is able to give the characters all the detail needed to keep this girl turning pages to the wee hours of the morning. I look forward to more from Mavin West. 5+ amazeball stars!!
***ARC received by author in exchange for an honest review***
I really wanted to love this! I really really did......but it just didn't happen :(
Morgan the m/c was dealt a mean blow, Her perfect marriage is cut short when her husband of just 3 years dies in a car accident. She is traumatised understandably, and after recovering just enough to breath, she is dealt another blow that destroyed everything she believed him to be.
She started sleeping with her grief councillor who in turn is grieving his wife.
I didn't really get into this book at first but it did grow on me.
I was very much enjoying the story line once it picked up, and than BAM I was sucked punched in the gut!! At 43% A MAJOR event happens, and I was waiting for it to come to a head for the rest of the book, waiting for the confrontation, SOMETHING, ANYTHING!!! and only in the last few % did it. And it was dismal
Carter Sterling the doppelgänger to her late husband stirs feeling in her she though long ago dead. I didn't connect to this man at all. Not one little bit. Was he hot as hell? yes. tattooed? yes. A total douch? through and through!! The fact that he had a rough childhood, doesn't excuse the fact he was going to marry a cheating bitch he had only known a few months, just because her father could further his career.
I am terribly sorry Maven. I enjoyed your writing style, the conviction just wasn't there for me.
Would I read another book from this author, YES I would, I wish you all the best in your career :)
" Bliss", had a little of everything, love, death, adultery , angst and a fairly happy ending, but I wanted more! I wanted to learn more info about Carter , I would have liked maybe an epilogue giving me more info on Morgan and Carter.
The book opens on Morgan having sex with her grief counselor , do not judge, both have lost their spouses and are having a hard time moving on, for Morgan, moving on is a dual challenge not only is she having an emotional hard time but physically she may be having sex but no one since her husband can bring her to orgasm. Morgan goes through the motions of trying o have fun she goes out with her girlfriend Ana for drinks dancing and manhunts, her freind Ana introduces her to Carter Sterling, handsome, British and full of himself , but Carter reminds Morgan of her deceased husband Eric and she finds herself attracted to him. Eventually she can not resist the lure that Carter Sterling represents and giving into that given what she discovers about her husband prioeto his death though painful in and of itself has helped her move past her grief bu into. Ange, betrayal land revenge!
So yes, 3.5 stars because I wanted more I was pulled. Into the story and found it to b a quick enjoyable read !
When i first starter reading this book was really into it, then all the cheating starter i was skeptical about where this book was going, but i love Morgan even though sometimes i just want to slap her (lol ).One of the main reasons what i really enjoy this book is this sounds some much like real life out there, we may not want to see it but is all around us and i like that concept that the author was trying to show us in this book.Who wants a cheating husband or your friend ?,no one does but doesn't mean that doesn't happen close to home.In this book we can see how Morgan decide to grief her dead husband, for some readers this book would not do it but sometimes some much pain make us do things that we had never thought capable of doing. The reason why i didn't give it a 5 is becauseof the ending, is not a cliffhanger you get your HEA but i would have love to see some more of their relationship. I will definitely read part 2 if one ever comes.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
I found this story compelling. Morgan looses her husband, Eric in a car accident. She is fucking her grief counselor at the suggestion of her mother and trying to get her life back together.
Meanwhile she is friends with Ana, who is a bit of a whore and is currently dating Carter. Carter meets Ana and Morgan at a bar and is instantly attracted to Morgan. He is planning on breaking up with Ana, but Morgan is gun-shy and tries to avoid Carter.
I won't spoil it but Carter and Ana almost end up married, Morgan discovers Ana had an affair with her dead husband, and Carter comes through in the end. (OK, I spoiled it.)
Good book.

Received this for a honest review.... Carter Sterling....Nuff said? :) Carter Sterling is a sexy player with tattoos!! Gotta love a guy with tattoos. Morgan is a broken widow and has to come to terms with some stuff from her marriage, Carter is a damaged player and when they meet the sparks do fly. They fight the attraction at first, but eventually give in. I honestly loved this book. Read it in a few hours and really enjoyed the characters and story. Would love to hear more about Carter and Morgan! Loved it!!!!
This was deeper than I expected. To love someone so deeply...someone you believed was perfect and that your marriage was perfect then loose them in a car accident is devastating. But after nine months of grieving then to learn hewas cheating is shattering and it only gets worse. This book deals with the after effects of loss...dealing with these truths and how Morgan gets on with her life. To be honest I wasn't sure what to expect...but it was really a good book. Intense storyline ...great characters and a dose of reality for some people who truly have a diificult time moving on.
This was okay. It is about love, loss, lies and betrayal. I really wished that this story was fleshed out more. I wished that there was an epilogue. I hated the way it ended, left me unsatisfied.
I just honestly say that I would read more books by Maven West. I read the book in just a few hours and enjoyed it very much. I would definitely recommend to others.
Bliss is a Romance written by Maven West. I read this as a R2R with Fifty Shades Support Group. As always, a special thank you to the mods and author for allowing me to participate.
2 Somber Stars! Lots of Potential, But Just Not For Me...
The Review: This was a short story of about 110 pages. Bliss had A LOT of potential. There was a great deal of angsty material to pull from but the execution just didn’t hold up for me.
Morgan lost her husband, the man she considered her soulmate, nine months ago in a car crash. She’s existing day to day, trying not to subcomb to the darkness that threatens to envelop her. She can’t move forward as she’s stuck in the past, grieving over a man so perfect, no one can compare. I actually liked Morgan to a point. Her grief was real and I could feel it as she struggled day to day. She’s having a pseudo relationship with her grief counselor, which I found kind of tacky on his part, and she’s going through the motions of life, but the emotions are nonexistent for her. She can’t feel anything past her sorrow.
Her best friend, Ana, who seems to annoy her and seems to be very self centered, likes to take her out clubbing and hook up with guys. She introduces Morgan to her new boyfriend, Carter, and Morgan can’t help but compare him to her late husband with his rock star hair, his incredible good looks and his British heritage.
Carter is the handsome and sexy bad boy whose troubled past keeps him from committing and loving. He thinks love is a sham and relationships aren’t worth the time invested. He hooks up with Ana to try and use her father's connections to propel his acting career all the while flirting with Morgan who, for the first time in a long time, feels some sort of connection with another man.
All the elements are there for a great story but for me, it felt rushed, the character actions and reasonings made little sense, the conflicts came together to easily and the plot was a bit shallow. There’s also a twist with the characters that came out of nowhere and it felt it was only added to serve the purpose of allowing the mains to hook up without guilt or shame. Things just came together to easily for my taste. I could definitely feel sympathy for Morgan and her circumstances, but her disregard for her friend, before the big reveal, was a bit on the low side. Carter just made me furious with his blatant disregard for anyone’s feelings except himself. It wasn’t until the end that I felt a bit of respect for him but the ending was so rushed, the feeling was fleeting.
The Wrap Up: I think with a bit more story, more time with each character, perhaps some emotional flashbacks of Eric and Morgan and a good editor (because there were some serious editing mistakes), this story would have been a great read instead of just an ok read. I wanted to like it, had the potential to love it but it all just left me disappointed.
First the premise of the story was good. Morgan is a very young widow. She lost her husband in an accident and he was the love of her life, nobody can or will ever measure up. She's trying to move on with her life but is stagnant, just going through the motions. She's going to her grief meetings and she has a special relationship with her counselor. He's trying to help her in more ways than one. She has friends who try to help her move forward. Well it's on this one occasion that she is out with her friend, Ana where she is introduced to Ana's boyfriend, Carter. There's something about Carter that Morgan finds familiar....same British accent, same tattoos and gorgeous just like her deceased perfect husband, Eric. But Carter is an ass who hits on her immediately and informs her that he's breaking up with Ana.
Here is where the story lacked was in execution and depth. One second Carter is an ass who wants to break up with Ana. The next he's with Ana and engaged, apparently for his career and Ana has connections. Ana goes from being a good friend to an acquaintance. Then when Morgan discovers a secret about her deceased husband that involves her friend Ana, (which is a good secret) Carter goes from being an ass to a victim who Ana doesn't deserve. He doesn't want Morgan confronting Ana?? Why?? Confusing, something about his career but doesn't make sense. Then we go back and forth with Morgan and Carter taking turns denying their attraction and what it means.
All in all, story line had promise. But as I said it lacked in execution. It felt rushed and disjointed. The author created interesting characters with interesting dynamics but rushed us through the story where I never felt fully vested in them. I wish we dug a little deeper and felt more of a connection and angst.
All in all an easy read with easy dialogue, 3 stars!! Thank you to the author for sending this in exchange for an honest review.
I received a copy of Bliss in exchange for an honest review.
When we meet Morgan, she's trying to deal with her grief over her husband Eric's death that happened a few months earlier, when he was in a car accident. He was the love of her life, her definition of a perfect man and a perfect relationship. She feels empty and is trying desperately to fill the void with something, anything, and often has meaningless sex. Most recently, she's had sex with Jon, her grief counselor, who is dealing with his own grief after his wife's death.
Morgan spends time with her friend Ana and meets Ana's latest sexy boy-toy Carter. Morgan finds herself attracted to Carter, but since he's with her friend, she expects nothing to ever come out of it. But then Morgan discovers something about her late husband that shocks her to the core and has her re-evaluating everything from her friendship to Ana, to her attraction to Carter.
Now for my review. I wanted to love the book, but I just didn't. I loved the way it started off and I immediately fell in love with Morgan and my heart broke for her as she was just so broken and so lost in her grief and it broke again when she discovered what was really going on in her marriage, unbeknownst to her. I just couldn't get past the fact that there was no big confrontation to it. And then once we got to the part where Carter broke things off with Ana, we had one more scene and that was it. I would have loved for things to have been more drawn out at the end instead of BOOM with the revelation, boom with Carter's speech and then the little tap of events at the very end.
So bottom line, I loved the premise of the story, and liked it enough to give it 3 stars, but with more confrontation and angst at the end, I probably would have been able to rate it higher.
I wish I could say I like this book, it started OK..But alone the way, it just when blah!!!..Morgan was married to the perfect husband but was cut short when her husband of just 3 years dies in a car accident...Then she started an affair with her grief counselor..YUK!!...Then Carter Sterling come into her life, who dating her friend Anna....Carter is an arrogant and obnoxious, douchebag and like always, their always have to have a sad childhood and it turn them into total douchebag...So because of his sad childhood women have to paid for it...Carter is your typical bad boy, you know the one with the hot body, the good looks, the smile that melt any women heart, then to top it off he has a tattooed, the only thing missing in this book was Carter begin a billionaire..I don't know how many time I have read characters like Carter...Yeah! There were some twist and turn when it came to the story line but I just didn't feel it...I didn't connect much with most of the characters...There were time, I didn't even like Morgan, specially when she found out the truth about her husband and having Carter convince her not to say anything for his own game..Specially when she only met the guy and only thinking what was between her legs..Seriously!!...But the story was so and so...It just didn't deliver specially in the end, what a weak ending..
ARR- I received this book in exchange for my review
This story starts out very sad, Morgan has just lost her husband Eric in a car accident. She is friends with a woman named Ana and is sleeping with her grief counselor John. Now you may be wondering like I was were is this going. O yeah I forgot John is hung up on his deceased wife also.
Morgan is trying in her own way to get her life back together after losing the love of her life. She isn't really trying to move on from his death but she is trying to feel something (which is why she will have sex with John even though she doesn't allow him to kiss her)In walks in Carter(Carter is the hot English guy with the bad boy tattoo and the please take me now attitude)
Carter wakes up something inside of Morgan that she knew was asleep but didn't know she was trying to keep from waking. Morgan learns some pretty interesting thing about her fairytale marriage and she is forced to face the truth as well as face what is in front of her face.
My view on this story is I did enjoy the story however if I found out my husband cheated on me with my friend there is no way any one could stop me from confronting her.The end was a little quick but over all it was a entertaining read.
So...this one started out good (and why it is 2 stars and not 1). I was interested in how Morgan would go from upset widow who is doing her grief counselor to wanting to be with her BFF's boyfriend. Then we meet Carter, who yes has that bad boy, British, tattooed hotness. There are several problems I had with this book.
First, Morgan and Ana's friendship doesn't feel feasible to me. It sounds like Morgan doesn't really like Ana, so it sort of confused me as to why they were even friends. 2 - I feel like Morgan finding out Ana was sleeping with her husband was sort of only put in there to make Morgan feel less guilty for how she felt about Carter. And now...the BIGGEST issue I have with this book - that we are supposed to believe that Carter and Morgan will live happily ever after. I felt that Carter did not evolve at all throughout this book and I didn't see anything between him and Morgan that made me believe that she was 'it' for him.
I give it maybe a month (at most) before he's cheating on her. I'm not big on believing that if you are the girl he cheats with, that he won't then cheat on you. You know, unless you're Kiera and Kellan. Which Morgan and Carter are definitely NOT.
Morgan was married to the love of her life, Eric, for 3 years before he was killed in a tragic car accident. Morgan thought she had the perfect marriage and is having trouble moving on now that he is gone.
When Morgan goes out one night she meets Carter Sterling. Carter is your typical player but happens to be seeing her friend Ana. The sparks fly between them almost instantly. Will Morgan be able to overcome the emptiness that she is feeling? Will she be able to trust another man enough to let him get close to her? And will Carter be that man?
I’ll start by saying that I liked this book. I thought that the sexual tension/attraction between the Morgan and Carter well written. Bliss was a very quick steamy novella. I do wish that there was a little more content that would have cemented Morgan and Carter’s relationship at the end though. Nevertheless the reason why I gave the book a 3 was mainly because of the typos. I found myself rereading many sentences because of them. Overall the book was good and I would be willing to read more from Maven West in the future.
I received this book from the author for an honest review.
I received this book from the author for an honest review. This is a sad story with death, cheating, trying to find a reason to get out of being depressed about a death of your love... It starts out where Morgan looses her loving husband Eric in a car accident. Morgan starts seeing a shrink to help her thru her depression of loosing her love of her. Her shrink John also is grieving his wife but wants/does help Morgan with her depression along with getting in her pants... Ann is a friend of Morgan's and convinces her to go out with her and her boyfriend Carter (who happens to be a player and plans on leaving Ann) Will Carter who happens to remind Morgan of her husband Eric hit it off? Would Morgan do that to her friend Ann? This story was a quick read and a good story but the plot seemed rushed and it never got to into the characters which made it just agood read.wish it was longer and the plot deeper. Thank you again fort letting me review your book. Can't wait to read Moyer from this author. Also reviewed on Amazon.com
The story of Morgan is a sad one having just lost her husband and trying to move on. She's having a difficult time moving on- she longs to find what she has lost. I must admit I had difficulty getting into to story as I was reading. I felt for Morgan and her pain I just felt I needed more to truly understand her. Her relationship with Ana was odd being best friends and giving off vibes of not liking one another I didn't get it. I understood Carter's appeal and how he made Morgan feel, but I wanted to know more about him, his motivations and what fueled his actions. I wanted more of his backstory and past not bits and pieces. His relationship with Ana ugh it made me cringe!! As the story progressed, I did like it and wanted to know what would happen after so many secrets were revealed. I felt the story needed more character development- I needed more from the main characters. Overall, I did like the story.
*I received an ARR in exchange for an honest review*
Arr review: I understood the premise of the book but the way it was written, it wasn't that great at all.
I could get what Morgan was feeling. Carter I didn't.
Carter & Ana - I don't understand why they were together at all. Why Ana was marrying Carter, when she didn't love him. That wasn't explained very well. Carter wasn't written at all, why he was marrying Ana. He was fd up but I still could understand him at all.
Morgan - why did she allow Cater to dictate not to tell Ana what she found out. What was Carters game plan in it anyway. Having an affair with Jon her grief counsellor isn't that unethical to get involved with a client like that. So that part didn't ring true to me.
I am not usually a negative reviewer but this wasn't a good book for me. That is why I gave it 2 stars, I thought giving it 1 would be really bad.
This was an arr from the author for an honest opinion
I was drawn into this book from the beginning I was in tears it was so sad, then all of a sudden I was achingly mad and I got madder and madder.............I just can not for the life of me figure out why Morgan would wait, it just seems she was being taken as a mug all the way through and it broke my heart. I thought their was something missing from this story i cant quite put my finger on it though.I wished it had been a longer story. Even though I was sad for Morgan I didn't quite connect to her and ana well I could of punched it.......while carter was sexy I found him to just be a cocky wanker which I didn't like and again couldn't connect.
I really like this book. Morgan looses her husband from a car accident. She thought her marriage was perfect. She takes counseloring to help her to move on. Her friend Anna takes her to bars to meet a single guys. She meets Anna's boyfriend carter and is very attracted to him. I couldn't stop reading this book. Morgan was doing her best to be faithful to her friend but carter was very flirtatious and bad boy that who wouldn't want a one night stand with. Carter was Mess up and didn't care who he hurt. Morgan's founds her husband secret. I couldn't get enough if this story. I was upset when it was over. I want to read more of Morgan and carter. The sex scenes was amazing. I definite would recommend this book.
The book started out with a very depressing beginning. I feel I got swept up in that depressing vibe. Morgan lost her husband to a horrible accident. She cannot seem to move on from her "perfect" husband. Crappy grief counselor, meaningless sex, Lousy mother. Horrible best friend. Slimy, but hot, guy. But somehow I stared caring about all the characters. I just wish she went into more detail about Carter's life. He was hot, but I just found him to be a jerk. He did nothing endearing. The sex scenes were very hot. The ending was very abrupt for me. I definitely needed an epilogue . Overall the book was good, wish just a little more polish it could be very good.
ARR - received a copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.
I enjoyed this book overall. I felt like it was a good storyline an grabbed me from the beginning. The book starts out sad and we are introduced to Morgan who lost her husband, her seemingly perfect husband. Morgan is just surviving until she meets Carter. There were definitely some parts to the book where I just wanted to scream at Morgan to get mad and yell or hit Carter and her friend Ana. But, Morgan does nothing. I also wished we could get more background information about Carter, Ana and Morgan. I feel like parts of the story were missing without this. I also wished there was more to the ending of the story. It ended abruptly and should have a more detailed ending. Overall I enjoyed it though.
I enjoyed this story but really wanted more. Morgan is dealing with the death of her husband, the love of her life, and like many people finds it hard to move on from this love. Her friend Ana provides great distractions for her by getting her out to clubs. Ana then introduces her to Carter Sterling, a man Ana just started dating yet Ana is notorious for random hook-ups. Morgan feels an attraction to Carter which she doesn't want to acknowledge. Carter doesn't do relationships. Well, there are several twists and turns which did have me hanging on my seat but the end sort of just happened. We had great build up for all the drama so I really wanted a little more depth to how it ended. Overall a good story to escape into if you are looking for a romance with steamy sex.
Another Amazon freebie that i was leary about, but paid off in the long run. There were some grammatical/editing errors, but not enough to turn me off of reading! This was a quick 4 hour read for me!
Morgan is a widow who is having a hard time dealing with her husband's death (though he died 9 months ago) and everyone thinks she should have moved on by now. She is in grief counseling, but sleeping with her counselor probably isn't the best way to deal with her grief. She has a "friend" in Ana, though things happen and she finds out something that would have cause me to do very evil things, and Morgan seems just fine to let things go. Carter is Ana's "boyfriend" though him and Morgan do hook up. There isn't a whole lot of sex, and more plot than I was expecting which was a good thing!
