Penelope Jones Halsall
aka Caroline Courtney, Annie Groves, Lydia Hitchcock, Melinda Wright

Penelope "Penny" Jones was born on November 24, 1946 at about seven pounds in a nursing home in Preston, Lancashire, England. She was the first child of Anthony Winn Jones, an engineer, who died at 85, and his wife Margaret Louise Groves Jones. She has a brother, Anthony, and a sister, Prudence "Pru".

She had been a keen reader from the childhood - her mother used to leave her in the children's section of their local library whilst she changed her father's library books. She was a storyteller long before she began to write romantic fiction. At the age of eight, she was creating serialized bedtime stories, featuring make-believe adventures, for her younger sister Prue, who was always the heroine. At eleven, she fell in love with Mills & Boon, and with their heroes. In those days the books could only be obtained via private lending libraries, and she quickly became a devoted fan; she was thrilled to bits when the books went on full sale in shops and she could have them for keeps.

Penny left grammar school in Rochdale with O-Levels in English Language, English Literature and Geography. She first discovered Mills & Boon books, via a girl she worked with. She married Steve Halsall, an accountant and a "lovely man", who smoked and drank too heavily, and suffered oral cancer with bravery and dignity. Her husband bought her the small electric typewriter on which she typed her first novels, at a time when he could ill afford it. He died at the beginning of 21st century.

She earned a living as a writer since the 1970s when, as a shorthand typist, she entered a competition run by the Romantic Novelists' Association. Although she didn't win, Penny found an agent who was looking for a new Georgette Heyer. She published four regency novels as Caroline Courtney, before changing her nom de plume to Melinda Wright for three air-hostess romps and then she wrote two thrillers as Lydia Hitchcock. Soon after that, Mills and Boon accepted her first novel for them, Falcon's Prey as Penny Jordan. However, for her more historical romance novels, she adopted her mother's maiden-name to become Annie Groves. Almost 70 of her 167 Mills and Boon novels have been sold worldwide.

Penny Halsall lived in a neo-Georgian house in Nantwich, Cheshire, with her Alsatian Sheba and cat Posh. She worked from home, in her kitchen, surrounded by her pets, and welcomed interruptions from her friends and family.

Re Passionate Possession - Penny Jordan gives us her standard PJ day at the HP office with this one.
Shy, introvert h meets kinda pushy newcomer H and we also get a bonus busybody gossip 'friend' of the h, who should have been kicked to the curb, except she is the wife of the h's boss.

The h is a 25 yr old orphan and has been since she was 17, her parents died in a big forest fire while on vacation. They were kind parents, but the h was raised to be very emotionally controlled and timid and her parent's death pushed her to the edge of her emotional stability and also left her completely alone in the world except for a senile cousin who lived in a care home.

When the cousin moved on to a new plane of existence, the h inherited the cousin's only remaining asset. It is a dilapidated cottage, badly in need of repairs, that is occupied by a very irascible, elderly tenant who refuses to leave his home and is demanding that the h immediately repair his place. The h thought the cottage had been sold long ago, so it is a complete surprise for her.

The h, whose family used to be wealthy and no longer is, (the h's parents weren't worldly and left no insurance, so the h only got enough money out of their estate to buy a small flat,) is so harassed by the cantankerous elderly guy and his solicitor letters that she is considering selling her flat to afford the repairs. This has left the h pretty despondent and anxious, because her little flat is the only security she has and now she can't even get a cat cause she is going to have to rent a room somewhere.

(Which is enough to thoroughly dislike the cantankerous elderly guy, who doesn't do any washing up either, because everyone should be able to have a cat if they want to!)

Enter the H, who is a business client of the h's boss and also the nephew of the h's cantankerous cottage tenant. The h and H meet for the first time at the embellishing, gossipy busybody's dinner party where she pairs the H and h together and then proceeds to grossly exaggerate the h's tenant/cottage situation and the H gets really, really snarky to the h because obviously she is a spoilt society witch and being mean to his long neglected, poor elderly uncle.

The h actually leaves the dinner party, almost in tears and then decides to put her flat up for sale to afford the repairs. The H eventually learns that the h isn't the spoiled wealthy socialite he thought and when he tries to talk to the h, she slaps him and he forces a roofie kiss or three on her.

The h is wary of the H even tho he makes her knees tremble, because the gossipy busybody claims the H has a girlfriend who is living with him, except she is in America at the moment. However, this doesn't stop the gossipy busybody from pimping the h out to the H as an amateur interior decorator, so we get a little PJ classic furniture and fabric selection lite in this one.

It soon becomes clear that the H is using any excuse he can to chase the h and the h is interpreting everything the H says as some sort of criticism of herself and having little fainting spells from all the stress. Eventually the H offers to buy the h's cottage for his cantankerous uncle and this leads to the big Purple Passion Moment.

Then the h remembers the live in lover who is in America and runs away and refuses to talk to the H. She has a few weeks of mopey moments and a preggerness false alarm, before she has to face the the H again on the planning committee for the annual village fete.

The gossipy busybody is there too and makes a big to-do about the H's absent live in lover, the H clarifies that the woman is his sister, not his lover and the h takes another header to the floor in a swoon.

The H carries the h off and they both confess for their love for each other, as the H decides the h needs to watched over to control her stress and catch her when she faints and he is the man to do it, so the two of them will marry as soon as he can get the license.

We leave them at the altar and pledging a lifetime of love and devotion. The h doesn't even mind the H's cantankerous uncle staying with them until the cottage is repaired. She is wrapped up in the pink sparkly glow of another PJ standard HP outing HEA and planning to get a cute little cat or three to spread the HEA around everywhere.

I liked the hero, Niall, the most. He was kind and compassionate, but even nice guys don't get a break in HelPlesslandia. Niall ends up butting heads with heroine Lucy. The subsequent misunderstanding between them contributes to the main conflict of the story.

In comparison, I felt more neutral about Lucy who'd kept tight control over her fragile emotions because she was afraid to love. Luckily for Lucy, Niall's presence is about to forever change that lonely existence! ;)

This was a decent yet slightly bland read and didn't possess as much passion as the title suggests.

If you like Penny Jordan, you will probably like this because it follows her standard model. The h is a neurotic mess (seriously, one of the worst I have encountered in her books) who can only be awakened by one extremely crabby man who will subsequently reveal that he worships her and she'll never have another thing to worry about for the rest of their lives.

I liked the hero Niall.

Other than that the story was pretty basic. Easy read low in drama.

DNF

Basic plot - h is a 26 year old secretary who was orphaned at 17 and this emotionally stunted her. H is rich businessman who recently moved to the area. They meet, fight, kiss, and make incorrect assumptions about each other.

Blah. I hated it.

I don't mind heroines who tremble or get weak in the knees when the H comes near, but this girl was just too much! Every time he came within 5 feet she was stunned silent, tripping over her own feet or trembling so forcefully the H couldnt help but notice and comment. She also was very immature, more like a 14 year old than a 26 year old. She constantly lashed out at the H, whiny internal monologues and bitchy inner comments about all the other side characters.

I got 50% in before I gave up.

Entire plot hinges on h, Lucy (orphaned intimacy phobe) believing that the H, Niall has a lover called Beth. Who is in fact his sister, as the slightest enquiry could have ascertained.

An emotional read about the h who, after losing her parents at the age of 17, shut herself off emotionally. When the H walks into her life with his wrong assumptions about her, he does more damage than he realized.

It was painful watching the h fight the attraction and keeping her distance to protect herself from hurt. Sadly, doing this caused her more pain than she expected.

This was a better read than expected. This book reminded why I love the older HP’s and especially the older Penny Jordan’s.

You have to believe the heroine is too dumb to breathe on her own.

A little different from most Penny Jordan stories, less misery, but also less interaction between them

He Had Misjudged Her

Lucy Howard didn't like arrogant men, and Niall Cameron certainly came into that category for her! He didn't even know her, but he quite happily jumped to all the wrong conclusions. She was rich, spoiled, uncaring and just the sort of woman he disliked most.

Not that Lucy cared what he thought of her. She wasn't interested in stealing someone who was already committed to a long-term relationship with another woman. But Niall didn't seem to have any such scruples…
