Le premier des cinq volumes en poche de L' épopée cathare, l'ouvrage de référence sur le sujet par le spécialiste incontesté. Il y a près de huit siècles, à l'instigation du pape Innocent III, le fer et le feu s'abattaient sur les terres qui allaient constituer plus tard la province du Languedoc. Ce premier volume raconte le prétexte de cette guerre sans merci connue sous le nom de croisade albigeoise et menée par une chevalerie recrutée dans le nord de la France : l'éradication du catharisme, une hérésie solidement implantée en pays occitan, qui enseignait que le monde visible n'est pas l'œuvre du Dieu de bonté, mais celle d'un créateur mauvais.

Michel Roquebert est le spécialiste incontesté des cathares. Il a notamment publié Histoire des cathares; La Religion cathare; Saint Dominique, la légende noire et Simon de Monfort.

L'invasion a obtenu le Grand Prix d'Histoire (prix Gobert) de l'Académie française,1970.

A very dense, very detailed account of a fourteen year period of war between the Catholic crusaders and the 'heretics' of the South. I won't be reading the other four books, as the detail is overwhelming and obviously will be very soon forgotten! However, after having spent time in this region last summer, it was interesting to understand the 13th century warfare and politics which shaped this region, and of which there are still many vestiges today.
