Mya Kyar Phyu by Khin Hnin Yu is my favorite book since childhood. It depicts struggles of a woman as she transitions from an it-girl to a wife and a mother. What I like most in this book is the highlight on hopes and dreams of the heroine and her constant pursuits of her dreams. This is very different from the other types of Myanmar novels with a focus on heroine, where heroines tend to give into social norms. Mya Kyar Phyu taught me how to be a strong woman.
This author has delusions that Burmese women have rights and not under the heavy influence of patriarchy system just becoz they’ve a little bit more freedom than so called Chinese and Indian women. ( Can we start from “ ဘုန်း “ and how only male can be GOD ?)
A story of a woman in a conservative society where women were judged easily and do not have much choices. It was written many years ago. However, some of the facts are still in which women are not treated equally and not forgiven equally as men. It is about a story in which a woman named Shelly fell in love with a man who had a lover. She managed to get his love at that time. However, she is lost forever. When she became a mother, she tried to make the most out of their broken marriage for the sake of children. It is very scary to see how a woman's choices are limited when you are economically dependent on your husband. It is just a heart breaking story. However, I feel like it is a book that every young woman should read.
