Saving His Mate

Rate this book
Lance devoted his life to serving a vampire, Elizabella, until the day she committed suicide. These tragic events bring another vampire, Tavok, into his life. Though Lance knows immediately that he and Tavok belong together, he wonders if he deserves to find love while still so overcome by grief.

Tavok can hardly control himself when he meets Lance, his fated mate. Tavok knows Lance needs time to grieve, and he does his best to wait. Everything is perfect when they finally make love, but then Kadlin, Elizabella’s twin, arrives and makes no secret of his desire to possess Lance. Kadlin disappeared years ago after aligning himself with a demon, and Tavok will do anything to keep him away from Lance.

When Kadlin spirits Lance away to the demon realm, Tavok is racing against time to save his mate before Kadlin does something that will separate the two lovers forever.

This second adventure in the "fantasy vampire" world with the feudal structure where vampires hold most, if not all, the positions of power, tells the story of Tavok, Ettore's younger brother who briefly appeared in book one, and Lance, the servant of the female vampire who kidnapped Ettore's mate. While she herself is dead, she has a very "worthy" and super-villainous successor in her twin brother, Lord Kadlin, who makes life impossible for poor Tavok and Lance.

Tavok is overjoyed when he finds his mate, and wants nothing more than to make love to Lance. While they do manage to get there relatively quickly, Lance holds back and that drives Tavok crazy. He has no idea what could be the cause, and him wanting to be dominant all the time doesn’t even appear on his radar. Until Lance tells him. But even then, Tavok doesn’t get how important it is for his mate.

Lance is still mourning the loss of his previous employer, the female vampire who went crazy, then killed herself, but he does feel drawn to Tavok. He also has no qualms about being turned, but having to submit to Tavok all the time grates on his nerves. Not that he says anything, he just lets it fester. Getting abducted and mistreated by the evil Lord Kadlin may not help, but it does put the whole "issue" with Tavok into perspective for Lance.

The second volume of this series is much bloodier than the first, with more violence, and adding demons as well as powerful priests to the picture. There is also less romance, and even though Tavok and Lance eventually find a way to be happy together, it isn't the sweet kind of happiness that Ettore and Simon found in book one.

If you'd like to experience vampires in a fairy tale-like setting, but don’t want to miss the brutality and blood sometimes associated with them, if you enjoy two males battling for dominance in a covert way (almost passive-aggressive) but with neither of them willing to give in, and if you're looking for a story full of aggression and an intense battle with "evil", then you will probably like this short story.

This is darker than the first book but still had a dose of sweetness and lots of steamy sex. The non-con scene caught me unawares (because I didn't read the warning). Looking forward to Fredric and Satoru's turn.

3.5 stars.
Enjoyable read.
Set in the year 3150.
Human Vampire. Lance is a Human Servant and Tavok is a Vampire Prince.
Tho set in the future, its kind of like living in the olden days with no technology.

I'd forgotten how much happens in this one. Perhaps I blocked it out because I wanted to remember only the good things about this world? If I were rating this one for the first time I'd give it a 3, as it wasn't as much fun to read as the others are. I'll let the rating stand, however, just because this book introduces Satoru.

Him, I very definitely remember, and he's one of my favorite characters from these series. And I can't wait to get to re-read his story next.

This review is for both this series and The Wolf's Mate series.

There's no logic to it, but I found myself just completely enjoying these books. The conversations are ridiculously stilted, the characters are too perfect, the relationships are all basically insta-love, and the plots are all simplistic and similar. But they were so fun to read!

It may have to do with my life being all kinds of stressful and crazy the last few months, but getting to read these books was absolutely my guilty pleasure. It was so nice to get to sink into a world where the good guys win, mates are fated, and all harms are redressed or compensated for.

I also enjoyed the setting. It's on a different world, set in the future, but in a society that's very much pre-industrial. Vampires are the nobility in this society, and each vampire has a "fated mate" that he or she will recognize once they taste that person's blood. The mate doesn't have to choose them back, though, which I thought was intriguing, but was only explored in minor characters.

There are also many different species of shifter (wolf, fox, dragon, and tiger at least) and demons on this world.

I enjoyed that the characters in each story are inter-connected. It was fun getting to see how the characters I'd grown to love in previous stories were getting on.

Although this is the second book in the series and refers to things that must have happened in the first one, enough details were given to keep me from having any problems following the plot. I enjoyed watching the two main characters try to find out how they would fit together and that the "one and only mate" aspect did not mean smooth sailing, even though both seemed to automatically assume that they would work things out together.

Very exciting second installment in this first trilogy of the vampires of Valldora. I really liked Lance and Tavok, more so than the MC's in book one. These two characters seemed more real to me, as people.

I'm curious to see where the author is going to go, not just with this trilogy, but the future ones. I think Fredric and Saturo's story is going to be very drama filled and I'm looking forward to it.
