Demons Own. We rip the souls from human bodies and hold them within ourselves as long as we exist. We absorb the human's memories, and can then create a replica of their shape and form. We kill too, but Owning is fun--messy, but fun.Previously in this Imp series we learned that the battle of Antietam, the bloodiest day in the War between the States, was so much fun that Az sneaked back into Maryland when no demons or angels were looking and Owned poor Samantha Martin. Now, forty years later, Sam's life is full of problems.
these stupid demons that showed up all hours of the day and night and tried to kill me. What happened to the cushy routine I had as Samantha Martin? I wanted to go back to it, back to my pre-Iblis life--the one where I'd hang out with my friends, eat hot wings, have sex with Wyatt and then let the air out of all the car tires on Market Street. Those were the days.Imps just want to have fun, and being bound to an angel is no fun at all. You see, the rank of Iblis means a place at the table of seven chief angels (archangels? the term isn't used here)--compulsory attendance at council meetings, hundreds of pages of reports to write or be severely punished, and Gregory actually does that to Az/Sam.
The elves snared human adults in their traps to use as servants, training talented ones in the arts, but all the truly skilled sorcerers were changelings--human infants taken away and dead elf babies left in their place. The elves had magic of their own, but humans had qualities that made them especially powerful.Demons are genderless but they can take a form that impregnates any female--Sam's horse Diablo is a demon-mare half-breed and one of my favorite book animals!
