It’s pretty wordy for being… boring. Hardly anything happens except Groundhog’s friends visiting him one at a time to see if he is awake and if spring is coming. And an ending that I think was trying to be clever but wasn’t.
Ages: 3 - 5
Cleanliness: groundhog is grumpy throughout the story.

With each review, I provide a Cleanliness Report, mentioning any objectionable content I come across so that parents and/or conscientious readers (like me) can determine beforehand whether they want to read a book or not. Content surprises are super annoying, especially when you’re 100+ pages in, so here’s my attempt to help you avoid that!

This book has very little to offer outside of the charming, cozy interior of the groundhog's home shown off on the very first page. Almost every character has an alliterated name: Gregory Groundhog, etc., which makes me feel like vomiting (the goose is the only exception). These animals are labeled as "friends", but they are exceedingly rude to one another. It ends with the titular groundhog taking revenge upon all his "friends" who woke him simply to inquire about the seasons (which they didn't seem at all concerned about once they got their answer).
What an adorable story! On Groundhog's Day, I shared this book with the first grade class I am interning in. They absolutely loved the book and found it funny. The book has several characters and this provides opportunities to create voices to spice up the story. The only negative aspect, is that the book is small and it was hard for the students to see the illustrations from their desk. I recommend reading this at the carpet to make it easier to see. All and all, this was a cute book!
