The time of the Tithing has come again. The time for both Thieves and Assassins to pay tribute to the immortal Candra. The time for the Guilds to receive their ancient birthrights--the Assassins' gift of Power; the Thieve's Elixir of Life.
Gambit heads to New Orleans after his brother is murdered. There his past catches up to him and he gets embroiled is a power struggle between the Thieves and Assassins Guilds. Rogue tags along and accidentally steals some of Bella Donna's memories. The plot is convoluted and motivations sometimes don't make sense. Lee Weeks provides artwork reminiscent of Joe Kubert.
The Good: You do get a look into Gambit's history.
The Bad: These plots are not so good today.
The Ugly: The Externals are just straight up dumb.
On my mission to write up my next video on Gambit and what comics to read I decided to try this one...that was...not good. Solid art but nonsensical story.
I fell in love with Remy Etienne LeBeau, better known as Gambit, watching the old X-Men cartoon in the 90s and they are currently rerunning it on telly at the moment.
One of the episodes deals with a part of Gambit's back-story, but virtually everything in it is wrong, so I had to return to the comfort of this graphic novel that I have read many times over the years to put it all right again in my head!
Remy is called back to New Orleans in order to help with the tithing to an immortal mutant, as known as an external, named Candra. During this time we find out why Remy left and more importantly, who he had left behind. Also Gambit and Rogue's blossoming romance takes a more serious turn :-)!
The het relationships in the X-Men I am drawn to are definitely the tragic ones, like Gambit and Rogue (due to Rogue's powers they can't touch) or Logan and Jean Grey (where Jean is in love with and loyal to Scott).
This is a bit of an aside, and my score would be 4.5 stars because of it, but it does upset me that Gambit's eyes are wrong through most of this adventure. His eyes are black with red irises, not blue! Please don't even get me started on the fact that his trademark eyes don't even make an appearance in the Wolverine movie...!
I am truly surprised with how much I enjoyed this mini. There's A LOT packed into these few issues, quite different from the writing of today, but I really enjoyed this style, especially with being able to read it panel by panel online. I enjoy Mackie's writing of Remy and being able to explore his initial playboy persona he had going on. Excited to read more of Gambit's appearances in the future!
I’ve been reading comic books from the 1960s through the 1990s lately, but this has been the best stretch of books I’ve encountered so far (I’m still very new to comics, though, so I’m sure there are better ones to come). Gambit isn’t in my top five X-Men (maybe not even the top ten?), but I enjoyed this standalone story that gave him a spotlight. I do wish there had been more action, though.
Solid miniseries that offers some interesting developments from Gambit's past. The artwork, courtesy of Lee Weeks and Klaus Jansen, is nothing short of amazing. Their work here evokes Tim Sale, but with a '90s Marvel sheen.
2.5/3 I was confused for most of the comic so the search for how to begin reading gambit continues, apart from that the comic was pretty boring since it was just going to the m same handful places in search of a vial
Pretty fun book in an upturned boobs, unnecessary romance, clawed nonsensical villain kind of a way. I would have liked to see a bit more behind the scenes of the rivalry of thieves and assassins, but what we did get was interesting and fun. Gambit is an interesting character and i have always liked his relationship with rogue, although the repression is turned up to 11 with her intercept of his ex wife's memories. Let the love flow, or get a bodysuit and let the love flow you guys!
A trip back to the 90s with fan-favorite Gambit in his original limited series, this volume looks at the rivarlry between the Thieves and Assassins - and the time of tithing that threatens their very way of life. Not the best X-Men story, but it was the 90s - you get what you get!
This is a great book to tell you what Gambit's back story is. In this book Gambit is part of the X-men, but he is called back to New Orleans to settle a score from his past. This a nice action, deep story book and it's a great book to learn about Gambits Origin story! Highly Recommend it.
I loved this one, since it goes back to my early days in comics, and we learn a lot about Remy's background. Great stuff if you're a 90's style comics fan.
This is a fantastic X-book!! I thoroughly enjoyed it!!! Great insight into Gambit and a fantastic bit of continuity for him and Rogue!!
You really got a feel for the character and I think, this is the first time that I've seen and enjoyed Gambit's character and motivations portrayed so well!!
The artwork is stunning, in an era where I haven't been a fan to be quite honest!! This was definitely refreshing and is a quick, fun and enjoyable read!! I'm looking forward to reading more of the Cajun from X-Men!!
The only downsides I have are the plot points that seem super specific and just a tad coincidental. If you can get over those points then it really doesn't detract too much from the overall story. It just seems that, as with all X-Men stories, the plot points are coincidentally reversible but hey, I suppose that is the comic business for ya 😂
