In 1936 Jonah Cook was twelve years old. He lived in a tiny rural Michigan town gripped, as all towns were, by the economic ravages of the Great Depression. He was in every way a typical boy, or at least he thought he was, until the day of his Uncle Jasper’s funeral when he discovered he had a bizarre gift. This gift, or curse as some would later come to refer to it, sent Jonah head long into a hair raising supernatural journey that brought him face to face with his greatest fears and released unintentional consequences that forced him to fight for his freedom, to prove that he wasn’t schizophrenic, and to protect the lives of those he loved the most.
In this, the third novel by author Howard Littleson, the richly textured details of the 1930’s come alive as Littleson takes readers on a riveting journey which starts with a small town graveyard and the secrets buried beneath its granite markers. The journey continues through the stately halls of a well-intentioned asylum of the day where murky diagnoses and crude courses of treatment force Jonah to question everything including his own sanity. Finally, the journey takes the reader back to the tiny town of Davisburg where Jonah struggles to live a normal life, find purpose and meaning for his controversial gift, and put away, once and for all, the demons that haunt him.
One thing is for sure. . . you’ll never enter a graveyard again without thinking of Jonah the Seer!
Excellent book. I got this for free on Kindle. The preview and the reviews sounded promising, so I got it and finally got around to reading it. On the Plus side, the writing was excellent. The story drew me in and sometimes I even had to take a break to breathe because the story was so intense! This is a good thing! I enjoyed the narrative and the the dialog was not stilted as it sometimes is with these "indies." I applaud that the author didn't resort to the foul language tactic that is often used as a substitute for good writing. Kudos!
On the minus side, I did have a few minor issues that detracted from the story. 1. Could have used a good proofreader. There were several punctuation/spelling/grammar errors that should have been caught. 2. Please don't use the word "Prolly." Seriously. The word is "probably." I hate that texting language has infiltrated into literature. It doesn't contribute to the story to write that way (I don't care how you think the characters pronounce things), and it makes the author look like an idiot. 3. There were two sex scenes that were not totally explicit, but were totally unnecessary to the plot. 4. Wasn't too crazy about the ending, but that's a matter of personal taste.
Was a different type of book than what I would normally read, but it also makes you want to see what the next pages will bring. If you are a paranormal believer the book intrigues you at least that is what it did to me.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I couldn't put it down. I even discussed this book with my husband who never reads and now he wants to read it too. I only wish the author had let us know if the judge was ever punished for killing Frankie. I love that the story was told from the point of view of an adolescent and gives a glimpse of how we all once saw the world around us. Worth the read!
I enjoyed Jonah the Seer and many more t-shirts it brought so many emotions from innocence, spirituality, being a medium of sorts brought with danger of being labeled mentally ill. You will enjoy this read. leading you on your own path of spiritual belief.
From beginning to end, I couldn't stop reading. The characters were relatable. The story was unlike others I've read with unpredictable events. The scenes moved along at a good pace. And even the ending was a surprise.
This book gives a little different take on the usual demon hunter type stories and allows the reader to experience the supernatural in just a little less frightening way.
