description

"The air was still, not a sound to break the velvet darkness of the night. He pointed the flashlight into the well and peered down..he stopped. There was something in the well."

Paul Russo and his family are hurting - he just lost his wife to a brief but terrifying fight against cancer - and he has absolutely has no idea how to pick up the pieces.

Their three children, are not taking the loss of their mother very well. In particular, Stella, his youngest, isn't quite right.

He heard her whisper, "You can come out now, Mommy. He left."

In addition, Paul's life savings are depleted and he has jump back into the real estate business as soon as he can. He has to sell a house to keep his family together - and do it fast.

And the house that lands in his lap could solve all his problems...but there's something wrong with the house. Very wrong.

"Sweat dotted his forehead and he shivered involuntarily as gray mist enveloped him...out of the corner of his eye, he sensed a shadow dancing around him."

But he can't stop now - not without finding a buyer...but as time goes on, even he begins to wonder is all this worth it...?

"The curtains were moving gently, swaying as if...He stood frozen. It was Hannah."

Truly an excellent read!

I had such a fun time reading this book - it was short and sweet and hugely entertaining.

This one definitely had a creepy vibe, and that combined with the grief and the heartbreak of Paul, really cinched the story for me.

I thought that Cash did a fairly good job representing Paul's loss (though, his children seemed a bit too well-adjusted given the circumstances).

I did appreciate that Paul had a loving support system - something that so often gets pushed to the side as a way for authors to limit the characters and simplify the story - so seeing him interact with his mother and sister really made the book memorable for me.

The mystery was both mysterious and entertaining, there were several really spooky moments, so I loved reading it!

I do think that there was potential to up the "spook factor" a bit more but the author was focusing on the family aspect.

All in all, this was definitely a fun one - I am excited to see what Cash writes next!

Note: I received a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Actual Rating: 3.5/5

Story/Plot:
This book has a really unique plot-line and I enjoyed it pretty well. It was a mild read but at times it really gave me the creeps. The concept was really good but I feel that the story could have a little ore better towards the end. Still, I enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone looking for a decent suspense or horror read.
Though I felt that despite of having a great start to the book, the ending was a little week.

Characters:
It took a few chapters to establish a connection with the protagonist, Paul, but once it was done, I was able to enjoy the book without any difficulty. I really felt sorry for the situation he was in - dead wife and three children to care of and then dead wife coming back to ask for help. The other characters were also good but I wasn't able to connection with anyone else.

Romance:
There was no romance as the lead's wife dies, but there was a whole book full of love. It was really sweet to read a horror story which was completely driven by only one main emotion - love.
The author did justice to the theme.

Writing:
I'd like to commend the author on the simplicity of the book. The writing was simple yet relatable and I'd like to read more books by the author.

Beginning:
The beginning of the book was probably the best part as it drew me right in. I was able to get the feel of the whole situation and could clearly see where the story was going.

Ending:
The ending, for me, was a bit confusing and week. I felt that with such a great concept the author should have really pulled it off with a great ending (connecting the dots and all) but to my disappointment the story felt quite rushed at the end.

Cover Art:
I like the cover art and it compliments the theme of the book perfectly.

Blurb:
The blurb is quite good and summarises the story perfectly well.

This was a new author to me and I have had this book on my tbr for a long time, so I decided to read it after seeing so many good reviews of it.

This was a very poignant haunting love story of a man that loses his wife to cancer and how he has to cope with life without her. Paul Russo and his children are trying to get their lives back on track after the death of his wife. Paul tries to get back into work as well as he owns a real estate business. An opportunity becomes available to sell a house a/k/a Stillwell Manor that is believed to be haunted.

The journey from this point on becomes haunting for Paul as he finds out that the house is somehow connected not only his wife but to himself. The book moves at a fast pace and it is surrounded by mystery along with the haunting of the manor. Lots of twists and turns throughout the book along with the heartfelt sadness of Paul losing his wife. Giving this book four stars.

~Haunted Mourning~

Paul Russo, a successful Long Island realtor, has lost his wife to a brain tumor. The deceased Allison has left behind a loving, distraught husband and three young children. It has only been a week since Allison passed away, dying despite the expensive, holistic, experimental treatments that Paul sought, one after the other, grasping at new found hope from each. Finally, after Allison is just a shell of her former self, she holds up a hand. Allison has had enough. Paul must let her go. She can no longer fight the monstrous cancer inside her head. It has only been a week. Paul and the children, victims of their mother's disease, struggle with grief and monumental loss. The twins, both thirteen, are angry and withdrawn. Stella, the baby of the family, feels her mother's presence. Stella insists that Allison is still amongst them. Paul cannot go on without Allison. He cannot do this alone. The children want their mother. None are willing to let her go even though Allison has already left them. It has only been a week. It is during this bleak period of mourning that Paul begins to lose his mind, despite his best efforts to push forward and give the kids some sense of stability.

He returns to work. He must. Allison's illness has cost them everything. Stillwell Manor, an old ancestral home belonging to Paul's wealthy acquaintances, Craig and Melissa Andrews, would bring a great commission if Paul could actually sell it. Stillwell Manor, named after the well that resides on the property under two weeping willows, is over two hundred years old with a sordid, haunted past. Adding to its spooky persona is the recent murder-suicide of Craig's parents. Mr. Andrews shot and killed his wife then turned the shotgun on himself. The home's dark past and present will soon become Paul's nightmare. Paul reminds himself that he's stressed. The nightmares are only dreams. But, when he sees his dead wife looking at him through a bedroom window at Stillwell, Paul begins to question his sanity. Eerie voices communicating through the radio, nightmares that leave him bruised and scratched, orbs that touch and electrify, grisly apparitions. What is going on? Stillwell Manor will force Paul to face unimaginable demons.

I read this book during the late nights for added effect. The book had a sorrowful tone that easily brought darkness about. The characters were in so much pain and grief, I just wanted to comfort each. I also got up to turn on another light here and there. This was an adult ghost story written with maturity. I related well to Paul's story. I lost a child and I know all too well how grief can manifest itself into all kinds of dark thoughts, leaving one feeling haunted day and night. If you're looking for guts and gore, well, this book is not your journey. However, if you're looking for a haunting tale, filled with raw emotion, this book is all yours.

Paul Russo's wife has just recently passed away from cancer. While grieving her loss, Paul is also trying to get his family's life back in order. After taking a six month long leave of absence from his job as a realtor, in order to care for his wife during her illness, Paul is in desperate need of work. Enter Craig and his wife Melissa, who ask if he can represent them when they sell their house on Long Island. Craig is a childhood friend of Paul's, and of course, Paul jumps at the chance that Craig offers him.

Stillwell Manor has been in Craig's family for generations, but due to an horrific family tragedy which occurred there, he wants to sell the mansion as soon as possible. Paul agrees to walk through Stillwell Manor, which he remembers visiting as a child, and which Craig's wife Melissa has been preparing to sell.

Little does Paul realize how much his fate will become entwined with Stillwell Manor. For months now, he has been tormented by a demon who asserts that Paul's wife's spirit is being held hostage on the other side. Paul's only chance to set his wife's soul free, lies in traveling to Stillwell Manor - the scene of an horrendous murder-suicide - where Paul hopes to discover the clues buried deep within the Manor's dark, secretive, centuries-old past - clues which will finally allow his wife's soul to rest in peace.

This book was really, really good; I absolutely loved it! It was just the type of book that I enjoy reading - featuring creepy old houses, ancient horror, and multi-layered family relationships. I give this book an A+! and will eagerly be searching for more books by this author to add to my TBR pile.

Meet Paul a man who after a year of watching his wife battle cancer. Has finally watched her pass away . Now he must pull his life together and get his life and the lives of his children back together. Even though they are having strange

nightmares and the youngest Stella is seeing her mom.

Now he goes back to work he has to sell a mansion. A haunted mansion. There are things that have gone on there, terrible

things. Stemming way back to Revolutionary times. Will Paul be able to pull it together and save his wife's spirit for the monster that is holding her. Will he be able to save himself and his children in the process,

This is a true mixture of a ghost story and a love story. Michael writes a tale of undying love and what happens when one tries to hold it together after the one true love in their life passes away.

The characters in this story are so well written. You can feel what they go through. If you have anyone that you love pass away . You know that feeling you have that you just wish you had one more day. One more moment. You know you have to move on but how do you do that. Just like all of us , Paul has to pick himself up and try and pull it together for the sake of his children. They are all mourning and trying to move on but its so hard. You feel that with the kids especially . That is just part of the story , then there is the ghost story part. Which is craftly well written. You know you shouldn't go into the room but of course you are going to walk into the cold room where Hannah was kept. There are just some creepy things that go on in that mansion that Paul must figure out before they can sell it. Both story lines are masterfully well written and go together seamlessly . The story behind the whole book to me was that when the love of your life dies, you must find a way to continue on. Always remember you will be together again.

Michael has taken the ghost story to a new level, not only giving us a good scare but also wrapping a message of love beyond the stars. This is a book that will keep you on the edge of your seats reading all night long. So check out this exciting new author. You won't be disappointed

This is the second book I have read by this Author. I actually read this book because the first book I read by him, Brood X, was so phenomenal that I had to read what ever else he had published.

If you like ghost stories, and love stories, if you are a parent or a sibling or a child, you will relate to this book. This author has the ability to reach out from the page and touch you on so many different levels.

The book opens after the death of the main characters wife, Allison. The pain he is going through and how it paralyses him is so real that you are immediately connected to his pain and his inability to get moving.

Once you pick this book up don't expect to put it down until the very end. It is nearly impossible to stop reading this authors prose. I have to say when I read it dinner was late and so was I. I couldn't bear to put it down to go pick my kid up from practice or to start dinner.

If you want a great escape, READ this BOOK!

It took me less than a day to read this ghostly and heart felt tale. Paul's character starts as a lost soul...he gradually comes to see he must take care of his family and take advantage of his own parents and sister as they do doesn't to help him. The ending odd interesting and thought provoking. I gave the story 5 stars as it entertained me. This is the kind of ghost story I enjoy. Have not read one like this for a long time.

When is a haunted house story NOT just your average haunted house story? Not that there's anything wrong with haunted house stories, but Stillwell: A Haunting on Long Island by talented author Michael Phillip Cash is so much MORE than the title implies. It is the story of a man struggling with the loss of the love of his life after a long and painful illness. Overwhelmed with his own grief, he must also deal with the devastation his children are feeling. It wasn't supposed to be like this, and he is ill-equipped to handle all of the mundane chores of the living, go back to work as a realtor and, oh yes, there are the dreams, and the Stillwell House, the recent scene of a murder/suicide long thought to be haunted by the ghost of a beautiful young woman so much like his wife. Paul Russo is tormented mentally and emotionally by a demon who is holding his wife's spirit captive. Are these dreams or reality? At the same time, the ghost that haunts Stillwell calls to him in some way. What is the connection between these two women? How can he set his wife's spirit free from her torment? How can he put his family back together again? How can he put himself back together again?

Michael Phillip Cash has done an excellent job of creating layers of emotional turmoil, while still building the thrill of ghosts, buried pasts and undiscovered mysteries. He had the ability to pull me completely into every facet of his tale.

This wasn't a horror tome, yes, it was dark, but not foreboding, I heard no organ music, didn't need the extra props, it was an incredibly well-done piece from the first page until its last. The ending was like the shiny bow topping off a well-wrapped gift! I highly recommend adding this to your reading list!

I need to thank Michael Phillip Cash for allowing me to read and review Stillwell: A Haunting on Long Island.

First and foremost, a large thank you to NetGalley, Michael Phillip Cash, Chelshire Inc., and the Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA) for providing me with a copy of this book, which allows me to provide you with this review.

Cash provides readers with a wonderful novella, full of chills and action, while keeping the spirit phenomena from becoming too corny. Paul Russo is forced to pick up the pieces from his shattered life after his wife's death. With three children and piles of debt, Paul can no longer hide from the world and must find a way towards normalcy. When his youngest begins talking about seeing her mother's ghost, Paul downplays this as a grieving mechanism. Once an esteemed real estate agent, Paul is forced back into the competitive world, searching for a sale to boost his confidence and economic prospects. An estate he frequented in his youth enters the market and Paul is asked to represent the buyers. With a horrific story tied to the recent owners, Paul must try to get it sold without letting this haunt any potential buyers. As Paul learns more about the house's history, he also discovers that there are eerie stories within its walls and a spirit lurking, one with ties to his wife's family. As Paul is haunted by his wife's spirit in his dreams and sees her struggle with a demon, he must forge ahead and save her, along with the house's original spirit, or face a lifetime of struggles. All this, while trying to put on a brave face for his children and ensure them that their mother is in a better place. Cash hits the mark with this novella, captivating the reader from the opening pages and not letting go.

When I read the premise of this novella, I was not sure if it would have an eerie nature to it, or be something as corny as floating ghosts and rattling chains. Cash invests much time into fleshing out his characters and provides a strong narrative, as well as a plot that pushes the story forward without making it seem silly. His historical sub-plot is woven nicely into the tale and keeps the momentum as the reader tries to learn a little more about Paul, his wife, and the Revolutionary War spirits haunting this estate. Use of the spirit in Paul's dreams juxtaposes nicely with his need to let her memory rest in peace. Barring a few typographical errors, the novella presents almost flawlessly and keeps the reader attuned to all that his going on, without delving into anything too outlandish or silly. It has piqued my interest to find more of Cash's work to compare this.

Kudos, Mr. Cash for a great piece and I hope you keep writing with this high-calibre style for years to come.

When Paul loses his wife, only his children and his job hold him together. When he's hired to sell Stillwell Manor - an old house with a dark history - Paul is forced to deal with the ghosts and demons that surround him.

I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

Paul has just lost his wife, Allison, to cancer.
They were literally childhood sweethearts, and he's never known life without her.
For the sake of his kids, he has to pull it together. Starting with going back to work - the cancer treatments depleted their savings, so it's vital Paul sells the Stillwell Manor.

Stillwell is a character all its own. An old, slightly dilapidated mansion, it has enough ghosts, not least the murder-suicide of the previous owners.
Having to spend time in the house, getting it ready to sell, Paul starts to learn some of its dark secrets.

I was expecting this to be solely a ghost/paranormal/horror story. Although this was a very solid spooky story, with believable paranormal activity; there's also a surprisingly sweet story about a family trying to come to terms with the loss of their mum. The intense grief afterwards, as well as the six months of living in limbo, putting their lives on hold, as she got increasingly sicker.

I enjoyed following Paul's story, as he tries to deal with looking after 3 kids, and realises all the things his wife is going to miss out on, as they grow up.
I equally enjoyed the solving of the local mystery, of the girl thrown down the well some 200 years ago.

I liked how it all finished, and the truth behind the demon tormenting Allison's ghost.

This was a well-written short-story, and I look forward to reading more of the author's work.

I'm obsessed with reading books about ghosts and other paranormal activity. (It's the main reason why my husband and I wrote our own paranormal novel...)
This book is not too long- a little under 300 pages. I finished it in two days- couldn't really put it down.
Now, it wasn't the scariest thing that I've ever read but it did have a few minor creepy parts. I do wish it was a bit scarier, but I still enjoyed it.
Michael Cash is a very good writer. The book is paranormal mixed with a love story. There were several times when I thought it was so sad. I felt really bad for the main character-Paul Russo- at times because he really misses his wife throughout the book. He feels like he is falling apart. He loses his wife and hasn't worked much, he's having trouble trying to be strong for his 3 kids. He's having nightmares, seeing things, hearing things, and to top it off his youngest daughter claims to be seeing his wife around. To make matters even worse, in order to turn their lives around financially, he has to try and sell a haunted mansion that is also somehow connected to his life. Paul just can't seem to catch a break. Is he losing his mind or is his wife really trying to reach out to him???
This book is a bit of a surprise. I didn't expect things to turn out the way they did. The ending was not bad.
Yes, I'd like to read other books by Michael Phillips Cash.
This book is definitely not a kid's book. There are a few adult situations in it, just in case you were wondering. Also, it's a good read if you're into paranormal, thrillers, horror, supernatural, dramatic books.

This was the second novel I have read by author Michael Phillip Cash, the first being Brood X. One thing I can say about this author is that he really knows how to draw you into his stories.

With Stillwell, you get a love-story wrapped up in a family tragedy that snowballs into a paranormal event. What I loved about this story was that it had so many layers to it. You start off with a very loving and devoted husband(Paul) trying to cope with his grief over the loss of his wife(Allison) to brain cancer. Before this, Paul had taken a leave of absence from where he worked as a salesman to take care of his wife as she went through treatments. Paul starts to become deeper and deeper in debt and chooses to go back to work. A friend has a house their trying to sell, that is rumored to be haunted and was the site of two horrible accidents, but Paul takes on the challenge of trying to get it sold anyway. This is where things start to become strange.

I don't want to give too much away so you will have to read to find out all the exciting details and how the story unfolds!! This author really knows how to pull a story together. The ending was very unexpected and didn't go where I thought it would. This book was extremely thought-provoking and interesting. I would recommend to anyone looking for an exciting read!!!

This ghost story of a tormented man whose recently deceased wife’s spirit is being held hostage is a great, fast-paced read.

Stillwell is both a ghost story and a love story. There are also elements of mystery as Paul uncovers the sordid past of Stillwell Manor and the secrets that the well on the property holds.

Parts of the story are sadly amusing, like when Paul is trying to figure out how to care for his children and run the household without his wife there. It’s tragic because his wife will never be back, but as the schedule coordinator and accountant for my family of six, I know my husband too would be lost if I weren’t around (even if just temporarily). There are also parts that are so sweet they actually made me tear up – Paul Russo was very much in love with his wife, and some of the descriptions of the love they shared for one another before her untimely passing are heartbreaking in retrospect.

Paul does eventually confront the demon that’s holding his wife’s soul hostage, in an unexpected twist to the story. I’ll leave it to you to read the story and discover the outcome of that battle.

I was also pretty happy to see that Stillwell’s cover art is taken word-for-word from the actual story, right down to the weeping willow.

I definitely recommend this book to fans of ghost stories, especially if you like a little mystery and romance mixed in.

Stillwell was the first book I read by this author! It’s the story of a man named Paul. He’s struggling with the grief of losing his wife, while trying to hold it altogether. That’s not all, though. His life is slowly descending into an unthinkable, supernatural horror that no human would ever expect.

One of the things I really enjoyed about Stillwell was the details the author added in about little memories Paul would have of his wife. These were so realistic and well-timed that they really added to the “feel” of the book. Paul really had a love for his wife that transcended this world and the next. The way the book is laid out is interesting as well. The chapters are each a new days of the week, and you won’t believe what happens on Saturday!

Stillwell is a well-plotted and thought out supernatural read with a touch of realism that makes a shiver run down your spine while you ask yourself, “What if this happened to me?”

I read Stillwell: A Haunting on Long Island with my Shelfari horror group.

It started off as a promising story. Paul Russo lost his wife to cancer. Feeling very sorry for himself and for his three children, Paul struggles to keep his head above water with daily life.

Then the nightmares begin. And he isn't the only one having them-his son Jesse is too. These were the best parts of the book, in my mind, and I enjoyed the dream sequences a lot. However, they were not enough to elevate this story above the level of just okay.

I will leave off the plot at this point and just share my thoughts. This book was very fast paced and I did enjoy that. Approaching this story as a fan of horror, I did feel let down. There were no true scares and the ending wrapped up way too nicely for me to thoroughly enjoy it. There were a good amount of grammar and editing errors, too. For instance, when someone shuttered in fear, that made me laugh and took me right out of the story.

To sum up, I thought this was just an okay read. I would recommend it to those readers who like their horror light. I think a true, experienced horror fan will find this book a little bit boring and short on scares. I do think the author has potential though, and I am not ruling out reading more of his work at some time in the future. Just not the near future.

Wow I just read this book in about four hours. Never put it down. It is a compelling read and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I had never heard of this author. He was so nice he sent all of his published books and those of his Mothers when I told him I wanted to win the book and would read it and then donate it to the Library in Linden Iowa that my Mom helps out at. I think he sent me 12 or 13 books in all.

He writes very well and this book wasn't something I woudl usally be ocmpelled to pick up although it seemed as if after a few pages I was pulled into the story. The ending for me was a surprise, the book had ghosts, hauntings, a recent widower and his children all mingled in together. I've seen ghosts so am pretty interested in reading books that include them, always enjoying someone elses take on them.
I think I will pick up another book of Michael Philip Cash's before I put them in the mail to the library, I like his writing style. He spins a good yarn and I did truly enjoy it.

So if you like to read about hauntings this is a good book for you!!

Here is the description as found on GoodReads:
Paul Russo’s wife just died. While trying to get his family’s life back in order, Paul is being tormented by a demon who is holding his wife's spirit hostage on the other side. His fate is intertwined with an old haunted mansion on the north shore of Long Island called Stillwell Manor. Paul must find clues dating back hundreds of years to set his wife's soul free.

I have not read many ghost/paranormal tales, so I am not qualified to discuss if what Mr. Cash has created with Stillwell: A Haunting of Long Island follows any of the typical "rules" of ghost stories. That being said. I truly enjoyed this book. It was quite emotional and, as per its title, has a very haunting quality that emanated from the pages.

I will not say that Stillwell: A Haunting of Long Island SCARED me, but the attachment I felt to the characters and the ominous setting and details made for a very spooky read. The author paid very close attention to detail with his character development, their thoughts and the interactions they had with each other and the spirits. The town and the house where the haunting takes place was given quite a history and I rather enjoyed that aspect of the story line, a sweet love story with a tragic ending.

Stillwell: A Haunting of Long Island is a must read for any who enjoy a ghostly tale with a bit of a love story that even the hardest of hearts would have difficulty not being touched.

The mix of pure love and the spooky moments took my breath away! Scary and tensed, yet so emotional.

Young woman lost the fight with cancer and her family is left to deal with the pain. Her husband-Paul have to get himself together so he can take care for their three children. He is real estate agent and the only solution for his financial problems is to sell the offered house by his friend. Suddenly strange things begin to happen, the house is haunted so that complicate the selling. Paul is on the edge of nervous breakdown and is afraid of losing the right to raise his children.

Reading this book was a great pleasure. If you are looking for something paranormal mixed with love story, this is the right choice.

Pareidolia: a vague or random image is perceived as recognizable

Michael Phillip Cash has a rich imagination, a gift that comes from being grounded and secure with life as being lived. That he is able from that strong stance to create stories such as STILLWELL embellishes his evident gifts as a writer. In his debut novel BROOD X he was able to create a terrifying tale out of things seen or magnify things seen to become ghastly distortions of credible possibilities. In his current exceptionally well-crafted novel he takes a step further in the arena of ghosts, and if the reader wants current thought on the subject, the following is an encyclopedic comment: `Ghosts have been a popular subject for millennia, appearing in countless stories, from "Macbeth" to the Bible, and even spawning their own folklore genre: ghost stories. Ghosts are perhaps the most common paranormal belief in the world. Part of the reason is that belief in ghosts is part of a larger web of related paranormal beliefs, including near-death experience, life after death, and spirit communication. The idea that the dead remain with us in spirit is an ancient one, and one that offers many people comfort; who doesn't want to believe that our beloved but deceased family members aren't looking out for us, or with us in our times of need? Most people believe in ghosts because of personal experience; they have seen or sensed some unexplained presence.'

Step into the Russo family. Paul Russo and his children, the twins Jesse and Veronica and their much younger sister Stella, are attempting to recover from the rather abrupt yet smoldering death of Allison, the wife and mother. The weakening, distraught Paul continues his profound mourning after the funeral until for the sake of his children (and for income) he re-enters his field of realty, deals with a hundred year old house, Stillwell, which is said to be haunted and through a series of well integrated subplots and twist and turns he discovers why the house is haunted, an explanation that is wisely left to the last pages of this engrossing rather short novel.

There are many factors to praise in the writing of this book. Cash has an affinity for describing relationships, both romantic and with children and friends: he makes us see every individual. Another is the a manner in which he treats childhood perceptions with respect: Stella, who is most like his lost Allison, quietly sees the ghost of her mother and knows her presence, and it is this trust that leads Paul to investigate the real mystery that indeed does lie within the arena of Stillwell. Tightly written with a graceful use of language, Michael Phillip Cash is carving his niche in the pantheon of successful young writers of the day.

The Publisher Says: Paul Russo’s wife just died.

My Review: A deeply disturbing book, full of the horror of inconsolable grief. As Paul Russo spirals down into the abyss of loss, he tries to keep enough contact with reality to feed and raise his kids. He gets help, of course, this being an Italian family from Long Island. No one can help him cope with the dream-visions of his late wife being pursued, tormented, by a shaggy beast.

His daughter sees the ghost of her mommy, too, and this supercharges his effort to lay the ghost to rest. His position as a real estate agent allows him access to an unusual house, scene of a murder/suicide. He finds evidence there that locates the source of his nightmares in the past, with a Colonial-era young girl who falls in love with the wrong man. The usual consequences occur, ie she dies nobly; Paul lays her ghost to rest and in the process lays his own burdens down, too.

This was a very quick read, and one I'd recommend especially to fellow Long Islanders. It was a pleasure to meet Mr. Cash. I hope to see more of him.

I purchased the audible version of this book so that I could listen to it while I was on a few hour drive. When I got to my destination I stayed in the car to finish listening to the book that's how much I liked it!

First of all I didn't expect it to be a love story and a 3 different couple love story at that! I was impressed that the author was able to get that all in there. I didn't want to see the characters go and its my hope, as it always is when I read a good book, that the author will bring them to life again through a second book.

I was hesitant about the purchase fearing it would be borderline Amytiville horror, which isn't my thing, but it wasn't at all. I was completed enthralled by the demon and also completely surprised when the story came to light.

I thought the author did a nice job juggling so many twists as there were a few different story lines that I thought really came together nicely.

I think the book also showed the authors intelligence on historical events, which peaked my curiosity to know more.

The reader was excellent! He really embodied the different characters and their voices and the reading was seamless.

I can't wait to read another book by this author. I'm hoping its another love story...hint...hint!

This is the first book I've read by Mr. Cash. It won't be the last. I enjoyed the book and was impressed with the manner in which the author built the suspense throughout the story. His descriptions of paranormal activities were believable, and not overdone. I found myself becoming involved with the characters and relating to their thoughts, feelings and personal dilemmas. I thought I had the end figured out, but was wrong, and was therefore delighted with the way the author pulled in all the loose ends. Although Stillwell is the suspenseful story of a haunting, it is also a well-written love story. For readers who are looking for an entertaining, and somewhat thought provoking novel, particularly if you enjoy anything paranormal, I recommend Stillwell, without reservation.

REVIEW:

The author has such a vivid imagination. He has such a gift as a writer. I read his debut novel BROOD X, a terrifying tale of very real possibilities. STILLWELL'S main character is Paul who finds himself trying to deal with three children after the death of his young wife. He has not only the grief of his wife'/s death, 3 children to deal with, but he has the every day household chores and he has a job as a Realtor on top of that. Paul is having a hard time focusing. He is haunted by nightmares of his wife's soul being held by a demon. Being a Realtor, his friend, Craig asks him to sell Stillwell Manor, his parent's house. Paul thought this would be a quick way to get back on track, since he hadn't worked for a while, due to his wife's illness. Paul discovers that a former resident of the house resembled his late wife. Tales have it that she still haunts Stillwell Manor, full of grief after her own death and the death of her husband. Paul feel if he solves the mystery of Hannah and John he may be ablhauntingse to put the demons to rest. After a few pages I couldn't let go of the book. The author took all the different situations of the book and put them together for one novel that grabs your attention and holds on. I somehow felt that I was with Paul and going through all of his troubles with him. I felt sorry and sad for him, he'd just lost his love, he's trying to be a mother to his 3 children, trying to put food on the table and now he has demons to get rid of. What a load to deal with., About the time you think you have it all figured out and how it's going to end, you turn the page and, guess what? You're wrong. The book was a wonderful read. A real page turner. It kept you guessing and trying to figure it out all through the book. If you are a reader off ghost stories and love stories, you will love this book. I would recommend this book to anyone. Just make sure you have time to sit and keep reading because it grabs your attention from page one. Go get yourself a copy of the book and take a trip to STILLWELL and discover what the haunting on Long Island is all about.

I would give this book 5 STARS

I was given a complimentary copy of this book STILLWELL: A Haunting On Long Island by the author Michael Phillip Cash for this honest review.

I love reading ghosts stories and this one is phenomenally well written and extremely addicting. I was spooked right along with the main character. I loved the twists and turns of this story. I had a lot of trouble putting this book down, because it was so addicting. I spent most of my night glued directly to this book. This author has a knack for capturing his audience and keeping us entertained for hours of reading with this story. I highly recommend this remarkable book to anyone who loves ghost stories and past lives.

I received a paperback copy of this book, directly from the author, in return for an honest review.

Stillwell: A Haunting on Long Island is by far my favorite book by author Michael Phillip Cash so far. The story is less straightforward than “The Flip” and “The Hanging Tree”, two other scary stories by aforementioned author. Stillwell is about more than a ghost story. It’s about memories, about letting go, about suffering and pain, and about a love that transcendents time and death. The writing is a touch better than in the previous books I read by said author, and the characters are more developed. Especially main character Paul had a lot of different layers, and by the end, I felt like I really got to know him.

Stillwell is a haunted well near a gothic mansion. I liked how, for once, it was the well that was haunted, not the mansion itself. I enjoyed how the book left it in the middle whether Paul was imagining things, due to mental anguish over losing his wife, or if something paranormal was really happening. The reader was left in the dark about this for the largest part of the novel.

What could be better, was the horror. There is nothing truly scary about the mansion, and all the scares go by too fast. There’s little suspense or build up, and while the mansion seems atmospheric, that atmosphere isn’t portrayed in the writing. The pacing is fast, sometimes too fast to make the book scary.

I enjoyed the story though, and it was a pleasant read. For a true horror fan, it might focus slightly too much on the love story instead of the horror story, but I didn’t mind.

I love Michael Phillip Cash's work, He builds stories around every day people, almost as if you are a voyeur into their everyday thoughts and lives. His characters are so achingly real they stay with you long after you finished his work . Stillwell is a haunting story about a family struggling with the loss of the lynchpin that holds them together. It's a family drama, spiced with terror, and mounting horror that makes you read with intensity and speed. I finished this book in one sitting and can't wait for his next work .. Keep them coming Mr Cash.

2.5-3 stars.

The good: The pace was brisk, and the it was easy to get into the flow of the story.

The not-so-good: Unfortunately, there were several glaring editorial errors that really bothered me. ("Shuttered" instead of "shuddered" was the funniest!)

It was a book about a haunting, true, but seemed to me to be almost equally a love story, as well. While many people will find this to be of no problem, I, personally, like my horror with a little more "bite"--just a personal taste.

While this story didn't impress me as much, I have read another story from this author in the past year that I enjoyed much more so, and would read more of his novels in the future.

I loved this book. It was just what I was looking for. I was a little disappointed to find out what I did in the prologue regarding the location of Stillwell Manor. ;)

It was a quick read, perfect to take on my weekend getaway. It was so good, in fact, as soon as I finished it, I purchased the author's other book, X Brood.
