Moments before she dies in a freak car accident, 14-year-old Abbie Stevenson's mind and soul are stolen by a trio of mystical girls, known in Norse mythology as the Norns. Her soul is taken thousands of years into the future and stitched into another girl's body, that of the legendary Valkyrie. Stranger still, when she wakes up, she finds herself in a primitive world run completely by children: all adults are zombielike berserkers. The children of Nornclan send her to Asgard, the home of the Norse Gods, to become imbued with magical runes which will allow her to return to her time and stop the terrible catastrophe that destroyed the world. As she navigates the broken future caused by the death of ancient gods, Abbie realizes that she needs to take control of her own destiny, and in turn the destiny of humanity.
The Norns’ Quest is a full-length, young adult novel set in a ruined, future-world run by children. It is a world where the Norse Gods – Thor, Odin, Loki, etc. – once existed, but are now dead, abandoning the children of man to fend for themselves. While journeying across Nornworld to Asgard, Abbie is aided by Munch, a talking raven; Franki, her loyal wolf; and Ferris the Elf, who acts more like a vapid high-school cheerleader than a ten-thousand year old elf. Before she can gain entrance to Asgard, she has to fight giants, make magical pacts with dwarves, and solve the riddle of what has cursed the adults of Nornworld. She even finds love in the eyes of a brooding jotun, Lodan, who can change his appearance to look like anyone, and perpetually acts like a sixteen year old boy even though he is immortal.
Kyle Jones lives in Central Texas with his wife and eight children. He wrote his first book-- the young adult fantasy novel, The Norns' Quest-- after his wife suggested he try creating a story their kids would enjoy. He succeeded. Reviews from his children range from "Pretty awesome, Dad" to "Best. Book. Ever." Kyle firmly believes that their opinions are fair, objective and impartial. In January of 2015, he released Motsognir's Game, the sequel to The Norns' Quest. He is currently working on The Unchained Prophet, the final book in the Nornworld Trilogy.
I wrote this, so my opinion might be a little biased. But I can objectively and scientifically state that it is the single greatest work of fiction that I have both written and read. Oh, and it's also the only book I've written so far.
Personally, it is one of my favourite books and I rarely ever really like a book. It incorporates so many things that make this book unique. Kyle Jones isn't just an author, he is an artist. If he decided to write another book, I wouldn't hesitate to read it. It is truly amazing. Keep up the good work!
This book is absolutely wonderful. I read quite a bit of young adult fiction and found this to be quite pleasant to read. The book's pace is perfect: not too fast, but not so slow you're going to get bored with reading it. It takes the time necessary to develop strong character and historic backgrounds without making you feel like the story is getting nowhere. This book contains everything one loves about young adult fantasy books: magic, love, action, Norse mythology, and much more. What I love best about The Norns' Quest is the fact that it is appropriate for all ages. As an adult, I loved it, but even someone as young as my ten year old niece could read it without much trouble (or me worrying about how graphic it is). I enjoyed reading this book from start to finish and can't wait to start the second one!
Picked this up as a free Kindle, and I was pleasantly surprised. It might be YA, but it works well for adult readers, at least this adult reader. Good pacing, plenty of activity and plot turns, and plenty of questions left about the world to bring us into the sequel. The characters are distinct and well realized and it's hard not to root for the protagonist, Abbie. Looking forward to what Mr. Jones has to share for the sequel.
I chose this rating because this was such a wonderful story. From beginning to end, I was s totally immersed in the world.. No spelling or other errors to distract or detract from the book. This is the type of story that stays with you and you are sorry to see end. Would like to see and will look forward to more from this author.
