The chance of a new life out in the wilds of the Yorkshire moors sounds too good to be true to shy musician Eva Byrne. Stifled and smothered within the cocoon of her brilliant academic career, Eva yearns for something different. Something real and exciting. Something she can feel.
Excitement. Passion. Pleasure. She finds that sexy, enigmatic Nathan Darke can provide all these and more when she moves into his home as violin tutor to his young daughter. But Eva’s sensual encounters with her demanding, domineering new employer quickly evoke her deepest fears, as he introduces her to the trauma of submission and marks her with his particularly dark brand of love.
But will Eva’s natural curiosity and thirst for new experiences be enough to withstand the sting of Nathan Darke’s exquisite touch? Will simple surrender be enough as he challenges her every inhibition, taking her on an erotic journey of self-discovery and liberation?
Reader Advisory: This book contains scenes of dominance and submission, including sex toys, pain play, anal play, nipple clamps, erotic waxing, paddling, restraints and caning. It also involves one scene where miscommunication leads to unintentional loss of consciousness. The book is best read in sequence as part of a serial story, and ends on a cliffhanger that some readers might find upsetting.
Until 2010, Ashe was a director of a regeneration company before deciding there had to be more to life and leaving to pursue a lifetime goal of self-employment.
Ashe has been an avid reader of erotic romance for many years—historical, contemporary, fantasy—you name it. Now, at last in control of her own time and working from her home in rural West Yorkshire, she has been able to realise her dream of writing sexy and compelling stories herself.
She draws on settings and anecdotes from her previous and current experience to lend colour, detail and realism to her plots and characters, but her stories of love, challenge, resilience and compassion are the conjurings of her own imagination. She loves to craft strong, enigmatic men and bright, sassy women to give them a hard time—in every sense of the word.
When she’s not writing, Ashe’s time is monopolised by her role as grandma to a lively toddler. She shares her writing space with a tortoise called Teefer.
I waited for the release of the book for quite awhile. The first time I read the blurb I was hooked. I got it the minute it was available and finished in one sitting. I liked the book and if you are reading this you need to know I am stingy with my stars. I may have given this book 3 stars because of prior prejudice - when did authors start writing books in sets of three instead of just writing one book, one story, no matter how long the book is. I don't care about pages and length, in fact the longer the better if well written. Any how - Nathan pushes all my boyfriend buttons. Tall, dark, shoulder length hair, great body, dominant (need I go on?) Eva, Evangeline, Ms. Byrne - young, talented, beyond smart, easily influenced by the experienced dom. I like them as a couple. I like that he doesn't require or demand Sir or Master. I'm not sure how realistic the time frame is for the development of their relationship and just when things get interesting. . . hurry up and wait until the next book. See what I mean? Did I like this book - YES. Am I in it for the long haul - YES. Should you read it - YES. I believe this is Ms. Barker's first book and it is well written and edited (thank goodness).
I have to admit this one was a tough one to review. In the beginning I was a little nervous that I was going to be reading another version of a certain book named after varying shades of a dull color. It was certainly how the book started. However, I ended up pleasantly surprised that this was not the case.
Don't get me wrong...this book is extremely erotic! It also had many of the same elements (and toys). But this also had a good story with characters I really liked. The author got creative with each sex scene (which there were plenty of), and I didn't feel like I was reading the same scene each time, nor was it awkward writing. It was really well written.
Eva was a pleasant surprise, as she wasn't very experienced in much of anything socially, and nothing sexually, but was an extremely intelligent person. The author gave plenty of instances that showed she was awkward, but too smart to be bullied or coerced into anything sexual that she wasn't comfortable with. She was a little scared, as expected about this totally new experience, but was clear thinking.
Nathan Darke was also a VERY pleasant surprise. He wasn't a mentally damaged guy that uses sex to take out his aggressions and feel better about himself. Nathan Darke is ENTIRELY boyfriend material! He's rich because he's very intelligent himself. He's a successful businessman, super sexy (which we are fortunate enough to learn about in detail), and has a true softer side that makes you melt at times. He simply likes his sex to be a lot more than "vanilla".
I really enjoyed the story of Nathan and Eva. How they came to meet, how they fall for each other, and how he introduces her into that whole new world....he makes it scary, exciting, and sweet all at the same time.
I did have a little trouble with how quickly their relationship progresses, but I'm sure it happens. It's also a quick read, with a very uncomfortable cliffhanger. However, the big question is if I would read the second book, and I absolutely would....and will! Therefore it's a well earned 4 stars, in my opinion!
Oh my gosh...I am hooked on the dark side! The Darkening was an incredible read for me. There wasn't one thing I didn't like. All the elements I enjoy where here for me to enjoy. The characters were just WOW (I'll get back to them in a moment). The dialog had me alternating between laughing and fanning myself. Let's not forget the details. Frankly, the attention to detail that some authors use can sometimes be wording and boring. However, this was not the case for me today. The author description of the countryside astounded me. I could just see those English Moors and fields of heather. I see other reviews where people will say this is just another FSoG. I do wish people would stop comparing every erotic novel to FSoG because frankly, I enjoyed this story so much more. Between the smarmy comments, the British humor and slang (which I do get) and the hot sex, I was riveted and could not put this book down. If I was to have one complaint about this book is I wish it was longer.
Nathan Darke, charming, good looking, British. I can’t resist a guy with an accent. *SIGHS* My initial impression of him is a certain well known Dom minus all the angry emotional baggage and phobias. However, let’s be honest, the real star of this story is Eva. She’s intelligent, talented violinist, frumpy and socially clumsy. I adore the fact that she’s not perfect. With her frizzy red hair and smallish breast, frankly, I find her a breath of fresh air in her less than perfect state. In addition, even though she seems social inept, she does not come out all mousy meek. Oh no…she’s got a saucy back-bone that does rear her head. It is when that backbone pops up and she starts sparring with Nathan that I love her best. Yes, their sexual attraction between them is hot, and the sex SIZZLES, but really it is when they are interacting on a vocal and emotional level that really draws me in. OK...here's the part where I warn about the sex content. There is both vanilla sex as well toys and BDSM action. While the BDSM will automatically rate a book at 4-Flames it's the author's attention to detail (See above) that really does it for me. Hot, yummy and anytime Eva wants to tag out I'm sure that will be many a reader happy to take her place.
When author Ashe Barker say in the blurb that the story “ends on a cliffhanger that some readers might find upsetting” she is not kidding. I have yet to read a cliffhanger that had me screaming at my Kindle NOOO! Seriously, that is a cliffhanger guaranteed to have you panting for the next title. I personally cannot wait for the next book. Is Darkening a book worth reading? Oh yes! This is a series definitely worth my recommendation.
An added note - an over done cover can make or break a book. I like a cover that simple and this one rocked it for me. Its clean lines and elegance is what initially drew me to wanting to read Darkening in the first place. Shadows and a violin...simple perfection.
I received this book from JeepDiva for the express purposes of an honest review. The opinions and rating of this review are solely mine and in no way was I compensated.
I have to say this was a bit challenging to write. Yes people have compared this to a certain other book in the erotica genre, but I felt this was a bit different from that one. I really liked this story of Nathan and Eva. I loved how the author developed their relationship which kind of just flowed naturally. Nathan wasn't really looking for a submissive and Eva had no idea what Nathan was into.
Eva Byrne is the sparkler! She's a shy, socially inept, but a brilliant musician who just wants something else. She's not happy. You would think she would be meek, but she's got a rebellious, snarky side that rears its head from time to time. Yes, she is naïve, but smart, and able to reason through her feelings when faced with something new, or different. She embarks on a sexual awakening that she clearly wants, and somehow she knows she needs.
I also liked Nathan Darke! British, suave, charming, successful, sexy, and a dominant! Definitely swoon-worthy! He doesn't appear to by damaged in any way. No emotional childhood drama muddling around in his head! He likes what he likes and makes no excuses for it. Vanilla sex is too boring for him period. He wants his sex "amped" up. He does have a softer side that we are treated to now and again, which is sweet.
What about the sex you ask? Well, it is yummy! And creative! And scorch the sheets hot! Spicy toys, BDSM elements, and even a some vanilla sex give Eva a whirlwind education. While she is experiencing a very new aspect of her sexuality, she struggles with what she likes vs. what she thinks she shouldn't like. They have a chemistry that is undeniable though, and you can feel their electricity jump from the pages!
There were just a couple of things I felt a little hard to accept. Eva is new to BDSM and I felt Nathan was acting like she was a seasoned sub. Everything was new to her and slightly overwhelming. Scene after scene involved spanking her derriere. Being new, she would not have the stamina to withstand these scenes literally one after the other. I felt Nathan, being the experienced one, should have given her more time between these sexual discoveries. Maybe mix it up some.
Overall, Ashe Barker did a wonderful job with this first book of the Dark Side Trilogy. It was well written, vividly depicted, and super erotic! The Yorkshire Moors sound fantastic to see! We are left with a devastating cliffhanger, so if you are not a fan, have book two cued up and ready to roll!
4 stars/4 flames
This book was gifted to me by the Jeep Diva for the express purpose of an honest review. The rating and review is solely my opinion and in no way was I compensated.
3.5 Stars..I really enjoyed this book...the only reason I'm not giving it 4 stars, is because I would have preferred more dialogue between the 2 main characters. This book is similar to FSOG.
I haven't read Shades of Grey so far, but I know Darkening uses the same set up as its big brother, only set in the UK and with, what I've garnered, a more intelligent heroine.
I do have the first installment of the Grey series in my "to be read" file, but it's the German library edition, as I don't want to spend money on a book I probably won't like (but will read nevertheless to know what all the rage is about LOL).
I bought Darkenning over at Total E Bound for one dollar, totally loving the cover and the musical setting. Also, I am a real sucker for a tall dark and dangerous hero with, sigh, long hair! I love their marketing strategy for selling firsts in a series at a severely reduced price to garner a better readership, it worked!
After starting reading Darkening I quickly discovered the book was written in present tense, and was all prepared to hate it. I don't know what it's with authors writing their books in present tense. I can have enough of that when reading high literature (and I know what I am talking about). But, it turned out that Ashe Barker has a very smooth and great writing style and achieved what to date no other romance fiction author has accomplished, she sold me a novel written in the present tense without me rewriting all the verbs!
Here's what I liked in Darkening: The heroine is highly intelligent with an IQ of 181, has no TSTL moments, and, for being a virgin, handles the whole D/s stuff with suave applomb. And there's a mental reason why she is a virgin, a good one, IMO, though I hope to learn more about it in the books to come.
The hero, Nathan, is a handful to stomach. He has a lot to speak for him, besides his beauty and wealth and sexual expertise, but he hasn't touched me so far that I could call him a true grand hero.
After negotiations and a contract, he introduces Eva to a whole lot of BDSM in the space of 48 hours. And I mean a lot: spanking with a ruler, spanking with hands, whipping, caning, vibrator, oral sex, gentle and hard fucking (quoting the author here).
I couldn't help myself, but after a spanking with a ruler, a spanking with hands, a serious whipping and a caning in such a short time span, he appeared bit of a steam roller. He always combines it with pleasure, a lot of it, but talk about physical and emotional overload.
I am spoiled rotten where BDSM books are concerned, as Cherise Sinclair and Beth Kery are my all-time favourite authors in this genre. Additionally, I have read numerous books by authors who have dealt grandly with this subject. It seems that I belong to those "soft-boiled" readers who prefer a slower introduction to the lifestyle which consequently thickens as the story progresses. I like it when the sub is gently introduced to the erotic art of pain and made felt secure in his/her wants and needs. Playing on the edge is good, but I like reading about the safety net, too.
Nathan is, in my estimation, a very dark dom. He feeds on pain, he's a true sadist and likes putting Eva on the edge repeatedly, but without giving her this wonderful feeling of security. Oh, don't take me wrong, he would never harm her willingly physically or emotionally, but he doesn't offer her the security and gentleness I've come to appreciate in other fictional doms.
This said, let me mention that the book ends on a real cliffhanger which I totally hated. Not because of what happens next to Eva and Nathan, it's romance after all, LOL, but because of this new brand of marketing strategy to make larger sales, which I usually don't support. (Beth Kery and her newest trilogy dealt just peachy without using such machinations.) So, should I buy the next installments of the series, I will only do so, if there's a sale on ARe or TEB.
I go with a strong C+, partly because of the cliffhanger, but mainly because Nathan is a good but too sadistic dom.
It dragged a whole lot more than it needed to (especially at the beginning). A few of their reactions (or responses) just didn't sound right at the time (or sounded a bit cheesy). His "Daughter" just didn't sit well with me, especially since usually I like to read kids' reactions and comebacks; but this girl.. just sounded funny to me (funny and not in a good way :S).
But, here's why I'm giving it 4 rather than 3 stars.. it's because it's actually a good story! A really good, friggin' steamy-hot story!! And I found that it had a bit of different things than the other books in this category.. I don't know.. maybe it's more daring, if I dare say so myself :P It, also, gave me a good vibe and I think this has a LOT of huge potential to be an obsession of mine...
This was a pretty good book although I wished it was darker. Eva Byrne is a musician who is struggling to overcome being shy and sexual inhibition and personal tragedy. Lonely, unsophisticated, desperately seeking love and approval, Eva is easy prey for sensual and experienced Nathan Darke. He wants her submission, and he knows how to get it he is very charming and good looking. This book was very well written and I loved the chemistry between Eva and Nathan and the sex scenes were good. When I got this book I thought it was about something darker the book had me hooked and although it is a cliffhanger I enjoyed reading it. This was a good start to a new series for me. I am looking forward to reading the rest of this series.
Evangelica Byrne is not your typical romance heroine. She has tiny breasts, a mop of frizzy, carrot-colored hair, a photographic memory and an IQ over 180. On the one hand, at the tender age of twenty two, she speaks multiple languages (we don't know how many, but in the course of the book we get to see her use her Turkish to good effect), can lecture on astrophysics or ancient mythology, and plays virtuoso violin. On the other, her fashions sense is appalling, her social skills are virtually non-existent and she's terrified of being touched. When we first meet her, she's hiding under her duvet, recovering from a breakdown that sent her running from her prestigious Oxford research fellowship.
I loved her immediately. Her clever, cheeky, self-deprecating voice grabbed me from the very first paragraph of this first person narrative.
Nathan Darke more closely fits the stereotype of an erotic romance hero. You know what I mean - tall, dark, muscular, wealthy (though at least he has a believable profession as a renowned architect), and of course, dominant. Ms. Barker rescues him from predictability by giving him a mercurial temperament, an endearing arrogance and a few secrets. Oh, and long hair. I just love a man with long hair!
In Darkening, the first book in Ms. Barker's trilogy The Dark, these two characters collide (quite literally) when Eva is hired as music tutor for Nathan's daughter Rosie. Initially dismissive of the diminutive, wild-haired waif who shows up at the gate of his Yorkshire estate in a tee shirt and hoodie , Nathan soon decides that he wants her for his submissive. And what Nathan Darke wants, he's used to getting. Despite Eva's social awkwardness and sexual inexperience, he woos and seduces the young violinist faster than you can say “Jane Eyre”. In exchange for the novel experience and astonishing pleasure he provides, Eva finds herself agreeing to play a role she barely understands.
Darkening excited me from the very beginning, not primarily because of the plot (which, after all, follows a familiar course) but due to the quality of the writing. Ms. Barker's prose is fresh, precise, evocative and funny. The first few chapters, which bring Eva and Nathan together, are a masterpiece of both mood and characterization. I bookmarked passages where Eva describes her first view of the Yorkshire moors and her first breath-stealing introduction to Nathan's erotic power. “Welcome to the dark side, Miss Byrne,” he quips, triggering a vicarious thrill that merits revisiting.
I was already contemplating writing a review, and I anticipated a gushing commentary about how Darkening was the best romance I'd read in the past year. I would still recommend the book, but three aspects of the latter part of the book have me tempering my praise.
First, I found it utterly implausible that a man of Nathan's experience would not have detected the fact that Eva was a virgin. Before their first coitus, he penetrates her on multiple occasions with his fingers and at least once with a vibrator. Certainly there are plenty of virgins who've already lost much of the hymen due to various activities, but if Eva fell into this category, she would not have felt such pain when he finally entered her. Perhaps some readers will not find this a major issue, but Nathan's “discovery” that he has rather brutally deflowered a virgin plays a significant role in defining their relationship.
Second, the BDSM interaction develops much too fast. Eva's transformation from a shrinking, anti-social brainiac with Aspergers' tendencies into a sexually ravenous, kink-curious submissive just didn't convince me. Meanwhile, despite all his supposed expertise and his emphasis on safety, Nathan does not act like the careful, caring dominant he claims to be. Caning is an extremely severe form of BDSM activity. Based on my personal experience, no responsible Dom would cane a novice sub during her very first scene – especially not after whipping her first! Nathan totally lost my sympathy at this point.
Indeed, brave and devoted to Nathan as she is, Eva is unable to bear the pain of this beating. She lapses into unconsciousness. And the book abruptly ends.
My jaw dropped. Was this really the conclusion of the novel? No resolution at all? With a possibly damaged heroine? As someone who enjoys all sorts of fiction I'm not a stickler for happy endings, but in my opinion, narrative conventions require at least some attempt to neaten up the conflicts that drive the plot.
I understand that this is the first book in a trilogy. I wondered if perhaps The Dark was originally a single book and the publisher decided to split it.
Yes, I know this is an attempt to sell more books. And I might relent and purchase Darker, because I do admire Ms. Barker's excellent writing and love her heroine. Still, such a monumental cliff hanger left me feeling a bit cheated.
If you like BDSM erotic romance with intelligence and spirit, you'll probably enjoy Darkening. But be warned – you won't get the happy ending you crave.
Ava is a 22 year old who looks 16, with frizzy Carrott coloured hair who wears skinny jeans and sweat shirts with multicoloured converse. Not your archetypal music teacher... And her whole world is about to change with the new job as music teacher to the 8 year old daughter of Nathan Darke. The story is set in the Yorkshire moors (I'm a Yorkshire lass myself ;) in howarth. The story begins with ava accepting the agency position of music teacher to 8 year old rosie. After driving from North London to Yorkshire in the pouring rain and thinking she has become lost on the moors, she comes to a stop at the imposing gate of Nathan Darke. He ends up bumping into the back of her car and they proceed to have a slanging match (not knowing he's her new boss) which ends with her throwing up down his car door! So she ends up in the house troughing lamb hotpot and proving her skills on her violin, which wows Nathan. A little slow to start but then it suddenly lurches into sexual contact and it's not too long before Nathan is offering to buy her clothing - from Harvey Nicks no less - after inviting her to a "do"
Harvey Nicks? I’m more a Next chick if I’m honest…
Now I know up north we're not backwards in coming forward, but really? Touching her beasts after a day of knowing her...? Most employers would be up on a sexual harassment charge. :-/ And telling her to have a day off.... She hasn't even started the job yet.? One thing that gets me in these stories that I love so much, is that they take the job but never seem to do any work. I know it would be boring but it would be convincing to have a little part where they actually work.
ANYWAY.... She goes on about her tiny tits too much.. WAY too much! Yes, we know you have tiny tits Ava so please, stop already! Grievances aside, this story is hot and Nathan is very dominant which I love. His dominance makes me tingle and that is just what I look for in a story like this. Holy hell, I was drooling at his words from more than my mouth! Plenty kinky fuckery to be had here! The story also had wit and made me smile as well as tingle.. Double whammy. But don't take my word for it, read it yourself. ;-)
“Don’t let go of the seat, and don’t try to cover yourself again, or I’ll tie you to that chair.” His voice is firm—I think he actually means it. In fact, I know he does. The unexpected surge of wetness between my legs is incredible. Warm, tingling. He lightly tips my chin up with his finger, forcing eye contact again. “Got that, Miss Byrne? Are we clear?”
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ H O T ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
To sum it up, and minor gripes aside, I enjoyed this book and look forward with anticipation to the next one. It was dirty, dominant and horny as hell! ;-D
Welcome to the Darke side – Nathan Darke, that is. He’s tall, dark and handsome, but also enigmatic, confident, dominant, and makes no bones about the fact that vanilla sex is not his thing. He’s exactly the type of man I’ve always found myself curious about and hesitantly drawn to. Adding to his air of mystery is the fact that, other than the prologue, the book is not told from his point of view. I desperately wanted to know what he was thinking, but appreciated how the absence of this created a very specific aura and feeling to the story.
Eva is the opposite of Nathan in most every way. She’s small, fair-skinned, and colorful with long red hair. She doesn’t see the beauty hiding in herself and definitely undervalues her self-worth. She’s highly intelligent and surprising in the extreme when it comes to her talents. When it comes to Nathan, on the other hand, she’s like the fly caught in the spider’s web – sort of paralyzed, sort of transfixed, and definitely unable to escape his charms or sexual magnetism.
I experienced equal parts of captivation and concern as Eva entered Nathan Darke’s world of BDSM. I was completely fascinated with the dynamic between Nathan and Eva and anxious to see the progression of their relationship. Would Eva’s yearning for something different be fulfilled? On the other hand, I was concerned with how quickly and how intensely Nathan introduced Eva to submission and his flavor of kink. There really were no baby steps here – maybe a toe in the water and then fully submerged in the deep end. Nathan shows signs of being a caring Dom, but I need a little more proof (sure to come in the next installments) before making a final determination.
The story is set in the UK, and for this American girl, it was interesting, but also a little confusing at times due to the unfamiliar places, unfamiliar lingo, or words that take on a different meaning. Despite this, I did really enjoy the story and found myself invested enough to want to continue with the trilogy. I loved the characters and loved the intensity. I’m a curious person by nature, so I need resolution and plan to enjoy the rest of Nathan and Eva’s story!
Eva Byrne is eager to start a new life. After being given the position of a live in violin teacher to a young girl she relishes the opportunity of a new start. After a not so smooth journey from London to Yorkshire she bumps into her employer. Literally! Nathan Darke, the enigmatic and drop dead gorgeous father to this bright young girl she is about to teach has completely enthralled Eva. Eva’s instant attraction to Nathan shocks her and she soon becomes lost to his charms. Relinquishing her inhibitions and her virginity to become a part of his world she takes them both on a journey of self-discovery. The Dom/Sub genre has been gathering momentum for quite some time now and I always go into these stories with slight apprehension. The ‘Fifty’ similarity is usually evident. This book is no exception. The characters in this story have a wonderful uniqueness about them, she is an accomplished academic and he although seemingly rich and successful he is also a loving Father. Both of them are so well written it was easy for me to see them as I read. They seem to be a formidable match and I look forward to see their story through to the end. The setting to this story is perfect, the Yorkshire Moores have always held an appeal for me since reading Wuthering Heights and in this book they are described beautifully enabling me to imagine their surroundings in perfect detail. This book does contain graphic sexual scenes including bondage and caning and is not for the feint hearted. With an intense descriptive I became lost in every emotion both characters were portraying in those scenes. I am eager to see where this story goes next and I hope it moves away from some of the more obvious similarities to a certain Mr. Grey Trilogy. I want to see this story develop into giving this genre its own unique twist.
For another topic that is overused, Darkening has the same characteristics as the other books but it tells a fresh, new story at the same time. Eva started out as the typical virginal girl that we have read about again and again but I didn't feel annoyed with her like I did all the rest. She had her reasons and although a virgin, she wasn't naive. She was realistic. She takes a job to teach young Rosie the art of the violin. Because the house, more like mansion, Rosie lives in is far away, Eva is given a room to stay in and is expected to move in for the length of her teaching. This is how she meets.... (drum-roll) Nathen. Of course, how was she to live in his house without running into the owner, and father to Rosie? Although their first meeting led to a... rather rocky start.... it's easy to say that they got very friendly very quickly. (Eye-brow wiggle) While Eva teaches Rosie the art of music, Nathen wastes no time teaching Ms. Byrne the art of submission. The story was a mixture of art, beauty, romance, and the list goes on. With that said, why not 5 stars? Well, long story short, there was just something missing. I couldn't quite put my finger on it but if I had to really break it down, I guess I would say it just lacked intensity. Especially for a story about BDSM and D/S I feel as though you need that intensity. It's crucial to me.
Overall, I still loved the book, even if it was on the softer side in my eyes. It was fresh, new, and it didn't take long at all for me to be completely lost within the book.
Me being a total and absolute fan of Fifty shades of grey, this was THE book for me! and let me tell you - it didn't disappoint !! also the extra + point was british slang that I absolutely ADORE and it was great to read it and I caught myself smiling often at some of the phrases hihih :) what can I say ...
this is why the plot of Fifty shades will never grow old ... cause its a classic love story set in the present and with a touch of kink :) (just how we like it) but different authors and the wealth of characters and the plot make it almost hypnotizing to resist.
same here. I just fell in love with the characters. I love it that they are real, touchy, cranky, a bit on the wild side, with undiscovered depths about them that they didn't know and a wealth more to explore with being together ... the chemistry is written soooooooooooooooooo well that you can actually feel the electricity between Nathan and Eva through the words. I love Eva (even at times I want to shake her silly and smack some sense into here) but then you try to put yourself in her shoes and see her points of view. I love that she's not perfect and its not all "sunshine and rainbows" and how she discovers and how she fights within herself. and Nathan .... what's not to love mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
I've seen this book several times in my GR's homepage, but i just start to read it today.
At first, i couldn't help but compairing this book with 50 shades's series, well maybe because 50's is the first adult book that i've read. Yes, i admit that this book have a few things that basicaly same with 50 shades's series, but still it was packaged differently. So, i have no problem to continued reading this book.
The book itself have a beautiful characters, either the hero, heroine, or other supporting characters, a quite funny conversation, and a solid conflict to be explored in the next book. This first book is like a introduction for us, an opportunity to graps each character and leave an enough space to us to wondering or guessing what will happen next.
I enjoyed this book set in the UK. The story telling is compelling and the imagery is first class but the abrupt cliff hanger was bruising to say the least. At 150 plus pages it was just not long enough to delve into this romantic contract as it is explained slowly and with feeling needing a longer translation to earn my interest. The book only served to annoy because the relationship was becoming interesting and then it just up and ended. The author did give a few pages from the next installment to whet my curiosity the writing is good and the tale of Nathan and Eva was riveting but I will wait until all books are available before I buy another.
I love this trilogy! It really is a fabulous storyline and the protagonists are quite unique and very likeable characters.
I love the BDSM scenes - they are very well written and well thought-out by the author.
I also appreciate the fact that Eva (the heroine) experienced very challenging personal and emotional issues, which made her "more real" to the reader.
This story kept me interested all the way through the 3 books! I was desperate to learn how Nathan and Eva's relationship progressed and I wasn't disappointed.
I approached this with some cynicism after being very disappointed with 50 shades (flat, dull writing and unsympathetic characters). I read it in 2 days. I loved the realistic sense of place and the gritty realism. The characters were well crafted and believable. I will be reading the next as the cliff hanger at the end nearly killed me!
Thanks to Laura at Totally Entwined for recommending this to me. The blurb definitely had me eager to read this book and I wasn't disappointed. I love the way Ashe Barker writes, she slowly builds the romance between Nathan and Eva until a disastrous weekend in Leeds leaves you hanging. (Don't say I didn't warn you).
I really liked this story I know people have drawn similarities to FSOG but it has a very differnt feel. I like the alluring Bangor between the characters and the unraveling of Eva's. Secrets. On to book 2
All I wanted was a book with good BDSM scenes. Did I get it? HELL YESSS!!! Along with that, I also got a good-looking, hot, tall MMC and a sweet, shy, introverted FMC.
The writing style, dialogues, character development — everything overall — is really good. The book is short and sweet. The scenes are described so well, I could almost feel them happening to me.
What the book has: ✨ Fifty Shades-style vibes ✨ Amazing BDSM scenes (though not the best example of a true BDSM lifestyle) ✨ FMC POV (only the prologue is from MMC POV) ✨ No OMD/OWD ✨ Virgin FMC, experienced MMC ✨ No cheating ✨ Cliffhanger ending
Read this book only if you’re looking for good scenes and can handle a slightly imperfect portrayal of BDSM. The FMC is a little crazy and quite an idiot at times — she makes mistakes like not communicating properly — and the MMC tends to rush into one scene after another (something you wouldn’t do with a new submissive, especially one with little experience). So, it’s not the most realistic book.
But if you can overlook a bit of that realism and don’t mind something a little dark, go ahead and read it!
Bdsm scenes has: ✨Impact play (Spanking, ruler, caning) ✨Bondage (in creative ways) ✨Lots of orgasms and many more things
Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Nathan, dominant, alpha, loving. Eva, beautiful, brilliant and innocent. Loved the storyline and the characters. Look forward to the next instalment.
