To be fair and honest, I know the author, Wade Bradford, a little bit. He's a really nice guy. We both write plays for younger audiences. He's funny and encouraging toward his peers, and did really fun movie trivia nights on Facebook during lockdowns.

Even if I didn't know Wade at all, I am convinced that I would still be utterly enchanted by his book, "Camp Omigosh". It's told in a convincing first-person narration by Connor, who recounts his adventures at the titular camp. And boy, is it quite an adventure!

What begins as a setup for a good ol' fashioned spooky ghost story, moves seamlessly through other genres, including science fiction. All throughout, there is humor. And Wade never talks down to his audience. Connor is flawed and has some issues, but he's also so easy to follow and cheer on--- you can't help but engage in his tale.

And what an interesting, poignant ending!

Perfect for middle grade readers. A real joy.

A fun, witty story well told. I shared this with my class of 6th graders. They loved it!

Very disappointing because the main characters and story start out well, but the book is SO full of copy-editing errors it becomes very annoying to read. On every single page there are at least a couple sentences with words accidentally left out. The author doesn't know the difference between the verbs "lie" and "lay", doesn't know not to use apostrophes for plurals, and makes many other mistakes that even his "middle grade readers" should know better of. (Unfortunately many won't, and this book sets a bad example for them.) I don't understand how a book can get published with SO MANY glaring mistakes in it -- didn't ANYONE proofread it, or even skim through it to give the author feedback? He mentions several friends in his acknowledgements, but obviously they aren't very good friends, because none of them read the book or told him he needed a good copy-editor! It is a shame, because the story is fun (aside from dragging on a bit long and having a rather convenient ending), and the young protagonist is charming and bright. I feel like THAT kid wouldn't print a book with so many errors in it -- why does his creator (the author) think he should get away with it?

This was such a fun read with my boys. We absolutely loved the ghostly mystery and camp aspects of the story. The twist the story takes about halfway through knocked us for a loop, though. It felt like we were switched from a ghost story to a sci fi read. It was jarring, but we were invested enough in the characters and story to keep going and ended up really liking it anyway. Both of my boys asked if there were any more books coming in this series or from this author, so that's always a good sign.

The Story-
Welcome to a summer camp that is literally falling apart. Closed for over 30 years after the death of a camper, the camp is reopening with no electricity, no wi-fi and no cell phone service. Plus, all the maintenance will be done by the kids. The entire summer will be a rehab project.

Connor is at camp because his mother wants to get rid of him in between boarding schools. He is smart and adventurous and the first to put together that things aren't right at camp. With a bucket of suspicions, he gets his friends Tasha and Parker involved in uncovering the truth behind ghostly appearances, lake monsters and strange camp councilors who are mute.

As more bizarre and wacky occurrences happen, the truth comes out, and it is way beyond your wildest imagination.

My Thoughts-
The reason I agreed to work on this book in first place was because of its originality. I loved the whole premise of this book, and even better, three quarters through everything changed and I was blown away. Things were just so interesting, well written and tense.

The whole mystery of Camp Omigosh centers around the death of a student 30 years ago. I thought it was going to be a ghostly adventure book, but then things go deeper and as a reader I couldn't put the book down. There are so many strange things, and I needed to figure out why. There is great tension which builds, and then halfway through the book you find out the kids might be stuck at camp forever, wow, things go from warm to hot. Each of the characters in the book were quirky and had lives of their own. With their own stories and talents, they compliment each other and add a good dynamic to the story.

There are some grammar, punctuation errors that I am hoping are cleared up in the final run.

Kids will really enjoy this uniquely written book full of adventure, mystery, and yes... science fiction.
