About the author

Pyotr Yershov (Russian: Пётр Павлович Ершов, Polish: Piotr Jerszow) was a Russian poet, the author of the famous fairy-tale poem The Humpbacked Horse (konyok-gorbunok). Yershov published many lyrical verses, a drama called Suvorov and a Station Master, and several short stories, but none of these had the same success as The Humpbacked Horse.

I loved it as a child, knew it almost by heart.

And enjoyed pretty much reading it so many years later.

It's really hard to believe that this lyrical tale was first published in the 1834th.

But tales don't age, and especially this one.

One of my favorite stories of all time. The animated movie was my favorite childhood movie that I know all its phrases by heart. The language is beautiful, the ideas are creative, and the illustrations are absolutely stunning. I can easily say that russian literature can never disappoint.

I am currently reading a book about the Romanov family, so it seemed appropriate to read this at the same time.

Russian folk tales are never light-hearted, but then folk tales seldom are. Of course, who wouldn't be charmed by a darling little horse with big soft ears and the wisdom of the ages? Ivan is a bit dull, but never fear, Double-Hump saves him.

Absolutely wonderful. An epic poem that tells a number of compelling anecdotes with lots of laughs and adventure. I especially marveled at the translation - 80 full pages of rhymed couplets, and only a handful of imperfect rhymes. A true job well done. And more than that, it's so easy to read - it just rolls off the tongue. I think a lot of kids would enjoy this, especially if read slowly in order to enjoy the language.

I loved the illustrations, too.

Yes, I saw this on Miyazaki's list of his 50 favorite children's books. I would love to see Ghibli animate this tale!

Estoy enamorada de este libro, es muy hermoso: sus ilustraciones, su tamaño, el tipo de papel; es un objeto maravilloso.
En cuanto a la historia, bueno, es literatura rusa del siglo pasado y, sin embargo no es nada común, más bien tiene un desenlace inesperado, por raro; por supuesto que conserva el tono de los cuentos rusos de los que hablaba Propp, sin embargo no intenta ser moralino y eso se agradece.

Szkoda, że nie można wybrać, które wydanie się recenzuje. "Konik..." jest jedną z moich ulubionych książek. Moje wydanie jest wierszowane, z 1988r. Wydanie z 2015 to jakaś porażka. Nie dość, że obrazki są bardzo przejaskrawione, to tekst jest PROZĄ! o zgrozo! Nie rozumiem jak można tak rozminąć się z zamysłem autora i jeszcze podpisać ten bubel jego nazwiskiem.

Bueno ¿quién es Angelina Beloff? Es una pintora que no ha tenido el mérito que se merece. Angelina nació el 23 de junio de 1879 en San Petersburgo, Rusia y murió el 30 de diciembre de 1969 en México, DF. Para su desgracia, fue la primera esposa de Diego Rivera."

Osobne som nikdy o tejto rozprávke predtým nepočula, ale čo sa nájde vrámci KK je poklad, takže som si uchmatla :)
Pozdával sa mi veršovaný štýl i príbeh samotný, nebol len úsmevný ale mal aj svoje posolstvo a koník sa dobre staral o svojho Ivana. A ten i keď možno nebol z najmúdrejších vedel kedy počúvať a kedy sa poučiť zo svojich chýb. Kniha je doplnená originálnymi ilustráciami a tie sú tiež pastvou pre oči - síce plné deja ale zas precízne a doplňujúce dielko.

Prvý verš:
Kde bolo, tam bolo,
čože nás do toho,
nech len bolo...

Úvodný verš z druhej časti:
Rozprávka sa ľahko vraví,
ťažšie sa však dielo spraví

Posledný verš:
Tam som stál,
med i víno popíjal,
po fúzoch sa roztekalo,
do úst sa však nedostalo

Uwielbiałam tą książkę. Miałam w domu najpierw wydanie po rosyjsku, które czytała mi babcia, tłumacząc na bieżąco. Potem dostałam to właśnie wydanie z przepięknymi ilustracjami i już czytałam sama. Był okres, że potrafiłam całe fragmenty powtarzać z pamięci.

Fue toda una sorpresa para el niño que yo era cuando lo leí por primera vez. El libro esta en rima, y como es español, tiene esas palabras que en México consideramos altisonantes, pero muy de la cultura española. Pero el contenido es genial.
