When a friend from Teague’s old life comes to visit, it sets in motion a sequence of events that will rock the Pixi world and force Cailin to question everything she thought she knew.
She knows that her father has been keeping secrets, but it’s only now that she begins to realize just how little she knows. Now she is trying to figure out what Owen’s relationship is with her father and if Owen and Teague are really what she thought they were. Learning the truth comes at a price, and Cailin is left wondering who she can trust.
C.E. Wilson was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, grew up in Millersville, Pennsylvania, and has been living in Pittsburgh since 2009. For the first few years living in Pittsburgh, she was an English teacher. Her first book, "Oath of Servitude," was published in 2012. In 2013, she quit teaching to be a full time author and hasn't looked back since. She loves spending time with her daughter and husband.
I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
The first book in this series was filled with secrets, and the second installment was full of disagreements. Both were equally frustrating and equally entertaining.
I finally got my answers to a lot of the questions that I had while reading the first book. I know more about Owen, Teague, and the mysteries surrounding them. I also have a better idea of what happened to Cailin's mother, and why Lennox Moon hate's Nolkrin and the entire Willow family so much. Once I realized that I would actually get answers this time, I thought that I wouldn't have to deal with that frustrating feeling of wanting everyone to just be honest and straight forward with one another, but that wasn't true. In fact everyone seemed to trust each other less than they used to!
Some of the characters kept secrets because they were trying to protect someone, and others just had evil intentions. I'm not sure why Owen and Nolkrin think that they need to keep their children in the dark. They are in very real and ever-present danger, and nothing bad would happen as a result of them knowing certain things, it would only help them to be better prepared. There were quite a few times that some major secret would be revealed only after Cailin or Teague begged or threw a tantrum, but after someone told them what they wanted to know, they handled it very well. Cailin might have had a moment of fear and Teague was skeptical, but considering what they were learning, those reactions were very reasonable and relatively tame. There was simply no good reason offered as to why Owen and Nolkrin felt they needed to keep these secrets. I knew what they feared would happen, but it never did happen so I at least expected them to trust them in the future!
.Because of centuries of betrayal and mistreatment, the pixie race is very, distrusting of anyone who is not a pixie. a few new creatures were introduced in this book. One was called a Mazikeen, and even though Mazikeen's have a lot in common with pixies, the pixies ostracize them. Druids are also in this part of the series, and although Druids protect pixies, the pixies treat them like they are monsters. And don't even get me started on what they think of humans. After I got a little back story about the history of pixies, I completely understood why they naturally distrusted certain beings, but Teague and Owen had done more than enough to deserve the trust of Nolkrin and Cailin so when even they questioned Teague and Owen's motivations, I didn't like it. It was strange because I know that Cailin and her father, Nolkrin love Teague and Owen so their moments of doubt just didn't go along with all of the times they trusted them. I suppose that is realistic though. People are not very consistent after all. The politics of pixies is also very fascinating. I already mentioned their distrust of everyone who is not a pixie, but they also value honesty and life above all else. At least the best of them do.
I think this books strong suit is how well thought out the world of the pixies is. It doesn't focus so much on the scenery, but rather it highlights what it would feel like to be a pixie. Cailin spent a lot of time sitting on Teague's lap or in the crook of his elbow, and that is exactly how I would travel if I were one foot tall, on the arm of a six-foot tall, handsome man!
The relationship between Cailin and Teague developed somewhat in this story, but in many ways it stayed exactly where it was before the events of this novel took place. They care for one another a lot, but she is still a pixie, and he--well he's not. Even if their size difference was not a problem, Teague is still something she has been raised to fear and hate. In her heart she knows that she can trust him, but it is difficult for her to deny what she has believed for centuries and that lack of trust does absolutely nothing to help Teague's insecurities. He already had a lot of problems when he met her, and knowing that the minor relief her presence in his life provides could be snatched from him at any moment, terrifies him. At first I didn't like Teague that much because he is so angry and childish, but now I feel compassionate for him. He is also growing up, and that doesn't hurt.
There were some love triangle elements this time. Both Teague and Cailin have people who were a part of their lives before they met each other, and they have feelings for these people. As always, I am not a fan of love triangles. I think it is an unnecessary distraction in books like these. Teague and Cailin have enough problems and forces working against their love already. There is no real question that those other people would just be consolation prizes, but for some reason they are still there. This is what keeps me from being able to truly invest in Teague and Cailin's relationship. Once the Annoying buzz that those other people are creating in the background while I'm reading is gone, I'll be able to root for Cailin and Teague to beat all the odds and be together.
By the end of the story, all of the characters were in positions to become stronger or weaker depending on the choices they make. I am beyond frustrated with the villains and very satisfied with where things are headed. It's the type of cliffhanger that doesn't piss you off, but gets you excited about the sequel.
Because this series is about pixies, it would be easy to assume that it is all light fluff, but that isn't the case. There are some dark elements, plenty of mystery, and tons of character development. I always enjoy stories like that, and this one was not an exception.! :D
Because of language and violence, I would recommend this book for ages 13 and up.
First, I want to thank C.E. Wilson for giving me a copy of Permanent Shadows in exchange for a review.... and I give it 5 out of 5 stars !!! What an awesome and amazing read! Lovers of Sci Fi, Paranormal, Fantasy, YA/NA... take note and read The Punishment Sequence series.. it is amazing! Here is a blurb from Goodreads.....

Permanent Shadows is the second book in the YA Paranormal Romance series, The Punishment Sequence
OK... so I read the first book in this series, Oath of Servitude (The Punishment Sequence #1).. and it was a good book.... I gave it 3 and a half stars overall.. but I knew by the ending of book one and the overall build up of the storyline and plot..... that book 2 seemed promising and was going to help fill in the many "blanks" I had from book #1. BUT... I did not expect to be blown away with action from the beginning! It was awesome.... I can tell the C.E. Wilson is adapting into the amazing author that she is.... but man... the story she brought to us with book #2 in The Punishment Sequence, Permanent Shadows..... is fabulous! You still have the love triangle going on between Cailin, Teague, and Sariel.... and although I still love Sariel.... Teague's character grew on me immensely since the first book. I like them both now...... although, maybe call me a loyalist.... I still have lots of love for Sariel! He is the evil, bad guys son, who seems nothing like his father and has had a thing for Cailin since the beginning.... I just still very much love his character!!! There is so much going on now... it is action packed and full of details throughout.... all of this making the storyline much more solid and endearing to the reader overall and preventing the reader from putting the book down, like at all!!! :) AND to top it all off, C.E. Wilson adds in a new twist at the end involving Teague's Ex-Girlfriend and her mother..... which will make book 3 even more exciting! A bit of a cliff hanger at the end...... but that is what leaves us craving more and in turn makes us await the day for the next book of this wonderful series to be released!!! CANNOT wait for Book #3 in The Punishment Sequence!!!! Thanks C.E. Wilson for this amazing series and for continuing to write amazing stories!!! Ummmmmm.... when is book 3 coming out? LOL!!!! Now, one of my favorites!!! Read this!
I received Permanent Shadows in return for an honest review from the author. The story starts not long after the first book Oath of Servitude. Cailin has returned from visiting with her family which ended up causing more problems and bringing to light new enemies. She is once again living with Teague and Owen as her part of the oath she is serving. While she was gone Teague has called his ex-girlfriend inviting her out to spend some time which she jumped at the chance to do. Cailin isn't thrilled with the idea of having to share her space with her least of all Teague. When they learn that MacKenzie has been possessed by the Mazikeen it becomes clear they need to let Cailin’s father know what happened.
While Cailin is gone things haven’t gone great with her clan, her sisters are dealing what happened when she last returned home. Cailin also has a visit from Sariel who has been in love with her forever and even gotten a promise to be his from Cailin even though she’s in love with Teague. Teague also learns secrets about who Owen really is and who he is. Someone is going on in the clan and Cailin is going to have to figure it out. Will she be able to save her clan before it’s too late?
I like Cailin as a character she’s smart, stubborn and easy to connect with. She’s stuck in a situation that wouldn't be ideal for anyone but her, and she’s embraced it. I like Teague as a potential for Cailin over Sariel I just don’t like him. I really like that Cailin has grown as a character from who she started out as in the first book Oath of Servitude. Permanent Shadows reveals new challenges, forgotten secrets and new hurdles for the characters to overcome.
I really enjoyed Oath of Servitude so of course I jumped at the chance to read Permanent Shadows. The author has taken the idea of Pixies and put her own unique spin creating an intriguing story. The story is captivating right from the start, filled with action, adventure, evil pixies, suspense and just the right about of romance. I love all the twist and turns woven into the story it’s one of those stories that keeps you on the edge of your seat with anticipation of what will happen next. The author has done a beautiful job written a story that flows from start to finish I actually sat down in one evening reading most of the book well tell I couldn’t stay away any longer only to wake up first thing to finish. Even though I hate cliffhangers I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen next. Another fantastic installment in The Punishment Sequence. This series is clean so teens as well as adults will be enthralled with the characters and story.
(I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review)
I usually don't really expect sequels to better than the first in a series. It usually just doesn't ever happen. I have to admit though, that this was SO much better, and I enjoyed Oath of Servitude quite a bit. A round of applause for this awesomeness!
Because really, as soon as some questions got answered, the plot took off like a shot. There was nary a dull moment and I should know, since I read this whole thing in a cramped RV and forgot to complain on the ride. The book just had me so engrossed that five hours passed without me even noticing.
Cailin, the pixi girl who'd been banished to live with humans, was much more likable in Permanent Shadows than the first in the series. I have this deeply rooted hatred toward girls who act stupid for guys, but I think Cailin's one of those rare badass chicks, able to feel hurt over guy situations and act like they're taking it in stride. Like, she doesn't go out of her way to get revenge and end up hurting/embarrassing herself in the process (Looking at you, Nora Grey. Yes, Patch is sexy, but really? Channel Cailin's badassery!). I was actually a little proud of the way she handled certain situations, but then again, there were moments when I just wanted to wrap my hands around her shoulders and shake some sense into her.
When I read about Teague, the human that Cailin's totally crazy about, my heart actually stops. I love their chemistry together, and Teague has the most adorable vulnerable moments when I just want to hug him and tell him, "Well, I still love you, so you can just run off with me, yeah?" That was kind of spoiler-y, wasn't it? Hmmm...well, you'll just have to see the part I'm talking about for yourself. AND BOY WILL THERE BE FEELS. Like when you see him jealous? Good moments, those were. *smiles dopily*
I did, however, feel bothered by a few things. My annoyance toward the minor characters was overwhelming. The sisters were relentlessly annoying the whole time, her dad kept secrets from her for "her safety," and adults just act generally superior, but not in the sensible way - in the overbearing, ridiculous kind of way. I had expected more secrets to be revealed also, and I feel like I'm still much too far out of the know considering this is the second book in the series.
Regardless, I still recommend this series to lovers of fantasy and romance. I think it's WAY too unappreciated for its level awesomeness, so if you're curious, GO FOR IT. It's worth every second you spend reading (and likely rereading) it.

Permanent Shadows by C.E. Wilson is the second book in the Punishment Sequence that tells the story of Cailin a pixi who is sent to live with humans as a form of punishment.
I thought Oath of Servitude was good but Permanent Shadows was great! It was so much better! Mostly in the writing. It was more fluid this time around which makes all the difference and was more enjoyable to read. C.E. Wilson is one of those authors that gets better with each book; she’s an author to lookout for in my opinion.
I love Cailin, she really is one of my favorite characters that I’ve read in a while. She is smart, stubborn, and spunky – which makes her totally relatable and likable. While she does get too emotional at times she doesn’t let those emotions control her, which makes her such a strong character.
Teague is kept in the dark both physically and figuratively from a lot of things in his life. He has some major revelations that are unfolded as the story progresses. I was surprised at how well he handled everything. He has some major character growth in this series.
I am looking forward to see how Cailin and Teague’s relationship progresses. At first when I read Oath of Servitude I was a little wary about how I felt about them being together. I mean Cailin is a foot tall pixi and Teague is a blind human, how is that suppose to work? But the thing is it just does! They have really good chemistry/relationship/understanding whatever you want to call it. I’m fan now and am rooting for them!
I loved all the twists and turns the story takes in this book. It was unpredictable and I was engrossed with this story the whole time while reading!
Overall all Permanent Shadows was an amazing follow up! If you liked Oath of Servitude you will LOVE Permanent Shadows! If you haven’t read book one yet and you like to read YA Fantasy books then you should absolutely try this series! You won’t regret it!
And ohmygosh that ending! I don’t want to give anything away but.. The ending + my feels = I NEED the next book now!
*I received a free copy of this book from the author for review. Thanks!*
I was so happy when C.E. send me a message on Goodreads to tell me the sequel to Oath of Servitude was out! I loved that book and I really wanted to read this one. And I’m glad I finally got to it. Permanent shadows is a good sequel! I think it’s just as good as the first one.
I’m not going to rehash the plot because it may give away spoilers for the first book and I don’t like giving spoilers. The writing was better in this book. As it usually is. After all, a writer keeps on getting better with every book they write. It took me a while to remember everything that happened in the first book because I read it a while ago and I’ve read a lot of book in between so I mix some up a lot. But once I remembered everything, I had so much fun reading it and I loved seeing everyone again!
I still love Cailin as much as I did. She’s so cool and she’s got spunk! I just love her. And Teague is so sweet! I flew through the pages and it was over before I realized so the next book better be done soon. Thank you for letting me read this book! I loved it!

*** MY OPINION
I loved the first book. Of course I loved this one as well :)
I am a bit sentimental with this series because it was the first book request that I had. I was lucky enough that I also loved the book. So when C.E messaged me saying that she is wanted me to review the sequel to Oath of Servitude, I immediately accepted. And I am happy of my decision because like the first book. I loved it!
After the tragedy of her coming back to her home. Cailin is once again in the home of the Ainsley's. Filled with worry of her family. She is confused with the sudden things that are happening around her. What's happening to the clan, why are other pixi around, and what is the Ainsley's connection to all of this.
It was nice to finally start reading this book. But I had to admit that it was a bit hard to remember who's who in the story, but luckily I caught up pretty quickly. I was excited to know more about what would happen to the story since the ending of the first book didn't exactly give any details as to what would happen next. For the first quarter of the book, I slowly got what would happen to the book.
Though I was still a bit confused with the plot of the book since it didn't give anything major in the first parts of the book, it wasn't until half of the book or near it did it get more exciting and mysterious. pacing was done well because it was balanced.
The characters of course are still as I read about them. Cailin was still spunky and cool. Teague was still cute and witty. Owen is still the strict parent as well as Nolkrin. In simple terms. It was as equally good to the first book, except it became greater because of the plot twists and style of writing.
The plot twist became a bit unpredictable and I commend C.E for that because its hard to write plot twists with fantasy novels (most fantasy novels are predictable anyways) and I don't know what specifically changed, but something in the writing was different. It was a good different though. It became more descriptive and intense. The words were well put together that they exuded emotions from the readers.
Long story short, it was greater than the first book in specific ways and I definitely can't wait for the next book.
